The Heartless Omega: I Only Want My Daughter - Chapter 4
A few minutes later, the doctor bandaged the wound on the back of Wen Ying’s hand. After checking, the doctor confirmed it was just a minor backflow of blood and nothing serious; she could be discharged immediately after bandaging.
Pei Zhiyun told Wen Ying to wait in the room while she went to handle the paperwork. When she returned, she was carrying a bag containing clothes.
“Change into these,” Pei Zhiyun said, handing the bag to Wen Ying.
Wen Ying had already climbed out of bed, still wearing the striped hospital gown. She took the bag and pulled out a simple white short-sleeved t-shirt. she held the garment with both hands, staring at it for a long time, unable to figure out how to put it on. Finally, she had no choice but to steal a glance at Pei Zhiyun and ask weakly, “Miss Pei, how does one wear this… raiment?”
Pei Zhiyun stepped forward, took the shirt, and expertly rolled up the hem to slip it over Wen Ying’s head. “Take off what you’re wearing first.”
Wen Ying didn’t have many inhibitions and besides, Pei Zhiyun had told her to obey her instructions so she stood there, unbuttoning the hospital gown and letting it drop. Underneath, she wore a black sports bra. Her skin was fair, her stomach flat, and the outline of her ribs was visible as she breathed.
Pei Zhiyun pulled the shirt over Wen Ying’s head and dragged it down to her chest. “Put your arms through the sides.”
Wen Ying followed the instructions obediently.
The clothes had been grabbed from Pei Zhiyun’s wardrobe by Gu Yan. Pei Zhiyun always maintained a slim figure, so her shirts were usually small sizes, but on Wen Ying, the shirt looked loose and puffy. The jeans Wen Ying put on afterward were also baggy around her waist; since there was no belt, she had to keep pulling them up as she moved.
Once the discharge was finalized and the fees paid, Pei Zhiyun worried about paparazzi made Wen Ying put on a hat and a mask. With her face covered, she finally looked like a modern person.
As they stepped out of the ward, Gu Yan walked up to them holding Xiao Doubao’s hand, shooting Wen Ying a cold glare. “Scumbag, don’t ever contact us again.”
A pair of confused, innocent eyes looked out from under Wen Ying’s hat.
“Scumbag”? What did that mean? The language of a thousand years in the future felt like a foreign tongue to her.
Pei Zhiyun bent down and picked up Xiao Doubao, pulling the child’s bucket hat lower. “Xiao Yan, she’s coming back with me tonight. In the future… we might be living together.”
If the System hadn’t warned her that Wen Ying’s status would affect Xiao Doubao, Pei Zhiyun wouldn’t have lifted a finger to help her.
Gu Yan had been Pei Zhiyun’s friend for ten years. When she first learned that Pei Zhiyun had gotten pregnant at the peak of her career and the child’s other mother had vanished, she nearly fainted from rage. She felt for her friend, who had clearly met a “scumbag.” Now, that same scumbag had appeared out of thin air after four years and was moving into the Pei household.
“You!”
“Xiao Yan,” Pei Zhiyun interrupted before Gu Yan could start. “I’ll explain everything to you later. It’s late, and Xiao Doubao has had a long night and needs to rest. Let’s go.”
Pei Zhiyun gently tugged Gu Yan’s sleeve to appease her, then carried the child toward the elevator.
Xiao Doubao leaned against Pei Zhiyun’s shoulder, murmuring softly, “Mommy… it’s Mother… it’s really Mother…”
Pei Zhiyun patted her back. “Mhm, be good.”
Seeing Pei Zhiyun move, Wen Ying nodded politely to Gu Yan before following them. Seeing her, Xiao Doubao waved her little hand excitedly. Wen Ying imitated her, raising her right hand and waving stiffly but gently, a brilliant smile hidden behind her mask.
The four of them took the elevator down. Pei Zhiyun had driven herself, while Gu Yan had arrived in a car sent by a driver. For the return trip, Xiao Doubao and Wen Ying naturally got into Pei Zhiyun’s car.
At the car, Pei Zhiyun unlocked the doors and placed Xiao Doubao into the child safety seat in the back, buckling her in. Wen Ying watched from the side, fascinated; this strange “iron box” and its complex mechanisms were completely beyond her understanding.
As Pei Zhiyun turned around, she didn’t realize Wen Ying was standing so close and accidentally bumped into her. Wen Ying immediately stepped back. “My apologies, Miss Pei.”
Pei Zhiyun also took a step back. “Sit over there.”
She put Wen Ying in the front passenger seat, not wanting her to sit with Xiao Doubao yet. She wasn’t mentally prepared for the child to have another “Mother” around.
Realizing Wen Ying didn’t know how to use a seatbelt, Pei Zhiyun leaned into the car to buckle it for her. In the close proximity, Wen Ying smelled the faint scent of gardenias lingering on Pei Zhiyun, the same fragrance she used to blend herself in the ancient world. It was a unique scent that Wen Ying had grown to associate with home.
After buckling the belt, Pei Zhiyun closed the door and drove out of the underground parking lot. As the car left, a middle-aged man stepped out from behind a pillar, clicking his camera. He looked at the photos of the car’s license plate with a satisfied grin.
For a parent, once health is settled, the next concern is education. When Xiao Doubao was two, Pei Zhiyun moved to a house in a better school district. Now, the girl attended a nearby kindergarten where, according to her teachers, she was quite the little troublemaker.
“Mother…” Xiao Doubao called out again during the drive.
Wen Ying instinctively looked back. Xiao Doubao was holding her water bottle, her eyes sparkling. The word “Mother” was pronounced perfectly, making Wen Ying’s eyes well with tears. She never thought she would see her daughter again.
Pei Zhiyun looked through the rearview mirror and corrected her: “Call her Auntie Wen. Don’t call her ‘Mother’.”
Xiao Doubao blinked and obediently changed her address: “Mommy.” This “Mommy” was clearly directed at Wen Ying.
Pei Zhiyun’s face turned stern. “She is an Auntie, not Mommy.”
Xiao Doubao didn’t dare talk back, but she muttered under her breath, “Mommy isn’t an Auntie. She’s Xiao Doubao’s mommy, just like you, Mommy.”
“We are divorced,” Pei Zhiyun reminded her coldly.
“Even if you’re divorced, she’s still my mommy,” Xiao Doubao argued with toddler logic. “Now that you’ve brought her back, are you getting remarried? Then I’ll have two mommies! Oh yeah!”
Pei Zhiyun frowned. She had worried about Xiao Doubao being overwhelmed by dual memories, but it seemed the child was only interested in having Wen Ying back. Wen Ying, meanwhile, just kept waving foolishly at the back seat. What an absurd family we are, Pei Zhiyun thought.
When they arrived home, Wen Ying learned how to unbuckle her own seatbelt. Xiao Doubao reached out for a hug the moment she was out of her seat. “Mommy, huggie! Mommy, huggie!”
Wen Ying stepped forward eagerly but froze, looking at Pei Zhiyun for permission.
“Mommy, Mommy, let her hug me,” Xiao Doubao pleaded, sensing the tension. She cupped Pei Zhiyun’s cheeks and gave her a big kiss. “Mommy, I love you the most.”
“Fine… let her hug you,” Pei Zhiyun sighed.
Wen Ying gathered the child into her arms. “Thank you.”
“Mother!” The moment she was in Wen Ying’s arms, the title switched back.
Wen Ying pulled down her mask and nuzzled the child’s nose. “Xiao Doubao, I thought I’d never see you again.”
“Xiao Doubao missed Mother.” “Mother missed you too.”
Watching the touching scene, Pei Zhiyun gave a stern warning: “From now on, Pei Lecheng, whether you call her ‘Mommy’ or ‘Auntie,’ you are not allowed to say ‘Mother’ (Niang-qin).”
“Okay, Mommy!” Xiao Doubao nodded, snuggling into Wen Ying’s neck.
They went up in the elevator with Gu Yan, who eventually said goodnight and went to her own apartment across the hall. Pei Zhiyun led them into her home and set out slippers.
“Change your shoes.” She placed a pair of cat-themed slippers in front of Wen Ying.
Once inside, Pei Zhiyun stood up and looked at Xiao Doubao. “It’s past 1:00 AM. Go to your room, wash up, and get to bed. I have things to discuss with your… ‘Mommy’.”
“Okey-dokey, Mommy!” Xiao Doubao ran to her room, turning back to blow them a kiss. “Goodnight, Mommy! Goodnight, Mommy!”
