The Heartless Omega: I Only Want My Daughter - Chapter 2
After their marriage, Wen Ying had actually been decent enough. Most of the time, she could be easily placated with a bit of pocket money, and she occasionally showed the attentiveness expected of a wife.
As for the child that was a pure accident.
Shortly after Pei Zhiyun transmigrated into the book, she and Wen Ying held their grand wedding. Normally, if Pei Zhiyun had married into the Wen family, Wen Ying would have been the one toasting guests and seeing them off. But since Wen Ying was the matrilocal spouse, everything followed the customs of the wife’s house, meaning Pei Zhiyun had to handle the social heavy lifting.
That night, Pei Zhiyun drank far too much while toasting. She was so lightheaded she didn’t even remember how she got back to the room. She only knew that when she woke up, she and Wen Ying were lying together without their wedding robes, and she had been “marked.” That was how the child came to be.
Only afterward did Pei Zhiyun realize that ancient people didn’t have the luxury of “dating” or the awkwardness of sharing a bed with a stranger; they all met for the first time on their wedding day.
Naturally, it was the same for Wen Ying. It would have been weirder not to consummate the marriage on the wedding night.
Regret was useless. Pei Zhiyun could only focus on her mission. It took about a year and a half to complete it, at which point she was sent back to the real world specifically, to a few minutes before the stunt wire malfunction.
She immediately warned the staff about the technical details and took extra safety precautions. The scene was filmed successfully, and she avoided the fatal accident.
Although it was a system-based transmigration, the experiences were real. More importantly, she had carried the child for ten months. After returning to the modern world, Pei Zhiyun didn’t miss the ancient era at all, but she was haunted by the memory of her daughter, Xiao Doubao (Little Bean Bun).
After several nights of insomnia, Pei Zhiyun contacted the System and asked if she could have Xiao Doubao back.
The System agreed but demanded a 100-million-yuan “processing fee.” To Pei Zhiyun, it was a small price to pay, and she transferred the money without hesitation.
Once the payment cleared, the System teleported Xiao Doubao to her side. Since Pei Zhiyun was a high-profile A-list celebrity, the System used technical means to “correct” the child’s legal identity so her origin wouldn’t raise suspicion.
When the news broke, the internet exploded. The keywords “Pei Zhiyun and Child” trended for over a week. After all, Pei Zhiyun was a top-tier star with over 70 million followers, four luxury endorsements, seven hit dramas, and a debut film that broke 4 billion at the box office. Because of the scandal, she was forced into a hiatus for over a year.
She thought that having a child appear out of thin air was the ultimate limit; she figured she could handle anything after that with a calm heart. She hadn’t expected this trash System to suddenly “airdrop” Wen Ying into her life today. She had let her guard down.
Pei Zhiyun leaned forward, resting her head on her knees and burying her fingers in her hair. She was on the verge of a breakdown. If she told anyone that her daughter was sired by an ancient person from a book, and that the child’s other mother had now followed them to the 21st century, they would think she was insane.
Creeeeak!
The doctor emerged from the ward. Hearing the sound, Pei Zhiyun regained her composure. She stood up, instinctively smoothing her hair, and asked calmly, “How is she?”
“The patient is stable,” the doctor said. “The heart rate fluctuation earlier was likely a sign of her waking up. You can go in now; she should be conscious shortly.”
“I see. Thank you.” Pei Zhiyun nodded.
“You’re welcome.” The doctor nodded back, eyes bright with recognition and a small, suppressed smile.
Pei Zhiyun returned to the ward. Just as she reached the bedside, the person on the bed fluttered her eyelashes, a sign of waking.
A moment later, Wen Ying slowly opened her eyes. Looking at the strange surroundings, she realized it looked nothing like the wedding chamber she had seen during her last “awakening.” Was she in the Underworld? But the Underworld should be dark; why was this place so bright?
The walls were white, the candles on the ceiling were blindingly bright, and the woman standing by the bed she looked exactly like her wife, but she was wearing clothes that exposed her shoulders and legs?
This was scandalous. If anyone saw her like this, they would surely point and stare. They might even say something vile.
“Wi… Wife, you!” Wen Ying looked away, not daring to meet her eyes.
Pei Zhiyun felt like she’d been hit by a sledgehammer. “Wife.” This is going to be the death of me.
Pei Zhiyun took a deep breath, pulled over a chair, and sat down. She tried to remain calm. “I am indeed Pei Zhiyun, but I am not your wife.”
“Oh, right. You divorced me.”
Wen Ying remembered it now, her tone sounding incredibly aggrieved.
That simple sentence made Pei Zhiyun choke up again, though this time her expression held a hint of melancholy. When she had divorced Wen Ying back then, she had been thinking like a modern person. She couldn’t accept the ancient concept of “three wives and four concubines,” but since the ancient world lacked phones or entertainment, people mostly just drank and partied.
When Pei Zhiyun was five or six months pregnant, Wen Ying often came home late, stinking of alcohol and the cheap powder of other women. From that moment on, the idea of divorce took root. Wen Ying had asked for a reason many times, but Pei Zhiyun never gave one. After all, how do you explain the concept of “monogamous loyalty” to someone from the Middle Ages?
Pei Zhiyun pursed her lips and regained her cool. “Even though your brain isn’t fully clear yet, I need to tell you: you’ve been reborn. You are now a thousand years in the future, in the 21st century. This is the ‘modern’ era. The time we lived in is now called the ‘ancient’ era. I divorced you in the ancient era, and that carries over here. We are no longer related. Do you understand?”
“I do,” Wen Ying nodded.
The System’s “fast-learning” buff seemed to be working; she understood surprisingly quickly.
As soon as she finished listening, Wen Ying applied her logic: “Then, Wife no, Lady Pei were you reborn here as well?”
Pei Zhiyun didn’t plan on telling her about the “transmigrating into a book” part. She went along with it: “Yes, I was reborn here too. I’ve been here for over twenty years and I’m familiar with everything.”
Wen Ying looked her up and down. “Twenty years yet you haven’t changed at all. You are still as beautiful and young as ever.”
Pei Zhiyun: “…” I really am going crazy.
Pei Zhiyun took a deep breath and continued, “Since you just arrived and aren’t familiar with anything, don’t talk nonsense, don’t wander off, and when I’m not around, don’t do anything. Understood?”
“But you’ve divorced me. Why do you care if I live or die?” Wen Ying asked, a hint of anger in her voice.
Back then, right after Wen Ying had finished her postpartum month of recovery, Pei Zhiyun had handed her a divorce letter without a word of explanation. Wen Ying had begged for answers and waited outside the Pei gates for three months to no avail. She knew it was for the sake of the Pei family’s power, but to be discarded so heartlessly still stung.
To this question, Pei Zhiyun maintained the same stance she had years ago: “There is no reason. If you don’t want me to look after you, I can leave right now.”
Her voice was soft, but her tone was icy exactly like the day she handed over the divorce papers and said: “From now on, we go our separate ways, and each finds her own happiness.”
Wen Ying looked into her eyes and saw not a shred of affection. She truly wanted to sever all ties. Since she was so intent on ending their relationship, why should Wen Ying bother her?
“Then, I shall trouble you, Miss Pei.” Wen Ying lowered her gaze, asking no more.
Pei Zhiyun added, “Just call me Miss Pei. The word ‘Wife’ doesn’t apply in this society anymore.”
Wen Ying immediately corrected herself: “Miss Pei.”
Just as they finished talking, the ward door was pushed open again. Hurried footsteps approached, and a voice barked out an insult the moment the newcomer saw Wen Ying.
“So you’re the scumbag who disappeared without a trace after getting my girl pregnant? Gone for four whole years, you’ve got nerve! Now that something’s happened to you, you finally know how to get in touch?”
Wen Ying looked up toward the shouting. It was a young “Miss.” In her arms, she held a child wearing a small hat.
Pei Zhiyun stood up and took Xiao Doubao from Gu Yan’s arms, gently covering the child’s ears. “Don’t say such things in front of the kid.”
Xiao Doubao whimpered and leaned her head against Pei Zhiyun’s neck.
Gu Yan was fuming, rolling up her sleeves as if ready for a fight. “Then take Xiao Doubao outside! If I don’t give this scumbag a piece of my mind today, I won’t be able to sleep!”
“Calm down, this is a hospital ward,” Pei Zhiyun urged softly. If they were too loud, the nurses would come, and as a celebrity, any scene could become a negative headline.
Gu Yan forced herself to settle down, but her rage simmered just beneath the surface like a volcano.
“Xiao Doubao, are you awake?” Pei Zhiyun looked at the child with eyes full of adoration. The little girl’s cheeks were flushed, and her large eyes were blinking dizzily, still half-asleep.
Pei Zhiyun had just flown back from a work trip and intended to play with her daughter. But just as she finished her shower, she received the System’s message saying Wen Ying had been transported here and was currently in the hospital. She had no choice but to come. Before leaving, she had entrusted Xiao Doubao to Gu Yan. They were close friends and neighbors, so she knew the child would be safe.
She thought she could handle the hospital matters quickly and go home, but she was still stuck here. An hour ago, Gu Yan messaged saying Xiao Doubao woke up crying for her mother and wouldn’t be consoled, so Pei Zhiyun gave her the hospital address.
“I mean, seriously, what did you even see in her? Her face?” Gu Yan scrutinized Wen Ying for a long time before finally asking. The “scumbag” was decent-looking, sure, but after abandoning her wife and child for four years, what right did she have to come back?
Pei Zhiyun gently rubbed Xiao Doubao’s chubby hand, giving her usual excuse: “It was an accident.”
Gu Yan: “…”
As they spoke, Xiao Doubao slowly lifted her head from Pei Zhiyun’s shoulder. Her round, doe-like eyes landed on Wen Ying in the bed.
Suddenly, she let out a soft, tiny cry: “Mother.”
Pei Zhiyun froze on the spot, her entire body turning rigid.
