The Heartless Omega: I Only Want My Daughter - Chapter 12
The production crew had arrived at the airport ahead of schedule. Upon assessing the situation, they contacted He Huan, the manager Pei Zhiyun had brought along for this trip.
He Huan reviewed the update before relaying it to Pei Zhiyun. “Teacher Pei, our flight information has been leaked. There are a lot of fans here to see you off. Should we take the VIP terminal or…?”
The car was almost at the airport.
Pei Zhiyun looked back at Little Doubao and Wen Ying. Both were wearing hats, and the two of them—one large, one small—stared back at her simultaneously. Their eyes were so similar that they looked like a perfect pair of mother and daughter no matter how one looked at them.
Pei Zhiyun shifted her gaze back. “Let’s take the regular terminal, but try our best not to disrupt the travel of other passengers.”
“Alright, I’ll notify the team.” He Huan immediately contacted the production crew.
Once informed, the crew began coordinating security personnel.
Pei Zhiyun chose not to take the VIP channel because she knew many fans had come specifically to see the first public appearance of her, Wen Ying, and Little Doubao together. While nothing compared to Little Doubao’s safety, she didn’t want to let her fans down. Occasional fan service was a necessary part of the business.
The car soon reached the airport entrance. Through the one-way windows, they could see a large crowd of fans holding banners and photos, waiting nearby.
As the car stopped, the staff member in the passenger seat got out to retrieve the luggage from the trunk. He Huan stepped out from the other side, walked around the back, and opened the door. The moment the fans caught sight of Pei Zhiyun inside, a wave of frenzied screams erupted.
“Ahhh! Pei Zhiyun!”
“Pei Zhiyun, I love you! Ahhh!”
“AHHHHHHH!”
Pei Zhiyun wore neither a mask nor a hat. She bent down, grabbed a large bag, and stepped out of the car. She waved to the fans with a smile before turning back toward Wen Ying and Little Doubao, who were following her out. Both were masked and capped, with only their eyes visible.
Little Doubao had never seen such a spectacle. She threw her arms tightly around Wen Ying’s neck and buried her face in Wen Ying’s shoulder, peeking at the strange crowd through the corner of her eye.
Wen Ying was equally inexperienced. Startled by the screaming, she instinctively looked toward Pei Zhiyun, her pupils darting around in confusion.
“So that’s my wife’s wife? Her figure is actually pretty good.”
“She looked great in the promo photos, but seeing her in person, her height and physique are top-tier. It’s just a shame her face is so hidden.”
“Can this show just air already? I really want to see what kind of woman my ‘wife’ loves so much.”
Amidst the screaming, some fans were discussing Wen Ying. Since they were close by, their voices carried clearly.
“It’s okay,” Pei Zhiyun whispered to reassure the two of them.
The staff brought out the suitcases. Pei Zhiyun took her and Wen Ying’s bags, while Wen Ying carried Little Doubao with one arm and held the child’s small pink suitcase with the other. Staff members eventually took the bags to be checked in.
The production crew rushed over from the lead vehicle, setting up cameras to begin recording while helping to maintain order at the airport.
The group finally made it inside. Fans had brought flowers and letters; since Pei Zhiyun couldn’t carry flowers onto the flight, she only accepted a few letters.
“Mama, so many people,” Little Doubao whispered. She tilted her head and buried herself deeper into Wen Ying’s embrace. Her eyes were red, and she looked ready to cry from the overwhelming sense of unfamiliarity.
Wen Ying looked down at her, gently nuzzling the child’s head with her chin. “Mommy told us before that many people who love her would be here today. She told us not to worry or be afraid. It’s okay.”
Little Doubao gave a muffled “mhm,” and a tear the size of a bean rolled down her cheek. Wen Ying felt a pang of heartache.
Fans followed them all the way from the entrance to the security gate. Once they finally stopped, Wen Ying carried Doubao to Pei Zhiyun. “Little Doubao is crying. Give her a hug.”
The child reached out her arms piteously toward Pei Zhiyun.
Pei Zhiyun’s expression turned anxious immediately. She took the child from Wen Ying and stroked her head. “Why are you crying?” she asked Wen Ying.
Wen Ying didn’t know the exact reason, but she guessed, “It seems there are too many people around and she’s not used to it.”
Once in Pei Zhiyun’s arms, Little Doubao couldn’t hold it back anymore and began to whimper, tears falling like broken strings of pearls. Pei Zhiyun cooed softly, gently wiping the tears away.
Previously, Pei Zhiyun had always taken Doubao out during quiet hours. Even when they went to play areas, she had never encountered a crowd like this. Pei Zhiyun realized she hadn’t considered this thoroughly enough; she would have to pay extra attention during the upcoming filming.
The crew had booked business class. A flight attendant led them to their seats. Pei Zhiyun tended to Little Doubao first, then, still worried about Wen Ying, she stood up and walked over under the guise of having something to say.
Fortunately, the flight attendant was attentive and gentle, getting everything settled. Wen Ying didn’t understand how things worked on a plane, but she followed instructions obediently and asked for help when she was stuck.
The filming location was a small town in the south. The flight was a little over two hours—not very long. Pei Zhiyun ordered a cola for Little Doubao to soothe her wounded spirit.
At the mention of cola, Little Doubao immediately clapped her hands. She turned with a beaming smile and hugged Pei Zhiyun. “Thank you, Mommy! I love Mommy the most! Kiss-kiss!”
Pei Zhiyun smiled helplessly at the little one.
After eating and drinking, Little Doubao fell fast asleep. Seeing this, Pei Zhiyun felt a wave of drowsiness as well. She closed her eyes and drifted off, only waking up once they had landed.
They gathered their things, deplaned, and took a car from the airport. As soon as they emerged, He Huan briefed Pei Zhiyun: “Teacher Pei, once we step outside, the crew will continue filming the entire way.”
Pei Zhiyun nodded.
The production team had arranged vehicles and staff at the exit. A crowd of fans was waiting there too. The moment Pei Zhiyun walked out holding Little Doubao, screams echoed in her ears. She picked up Doubao’s hand to wave to the “older sisters.”
Feeling shy, Little Doubao pulled her hand back and tucked her head into the crook of Pei Zhiyun’s neck.
“So cute!”
“Ahhh, she’s so adorable!”
The news of the family leaving to film the show had reached the hot searches an hour ago. Wen Ying had been highlighted by the media, so when fans saw her following behind carrying two pieces of luggage, they immediately pointed their cameras at her.
The camera flashes were blinding. Wen Ying slowly lowered her head and followed closely behind Pei Zhiyun to leave the airport. Once at the car, Wen Ying helped the staff load the luggage into the back, and the group set off for the recording site.
Cameras were mounted in the front and back of the car.
Little Doubao had just woken up and had been startled by the fans again. She sat in Wen Ying’s lap in a daze, her cheeks flushed and her lips pouted. This time, Pei Zhiyun and Wen Ying sat in the middle row, with He Huan and the others in the back. A crew member sat in the front passenger seat.
“Teacher Pei, hello.” The staff member turned around to greet her.
Pei Zhiyun had just unscrewed a bottle of mineral water to hand to Wen Ying. Hearing her name, she looked up, her eyes bright. “Yes?”
The staff member smiled. “Um, Teacher Pei, we have a few interview questions for you. Is now a convenient time?”
“Sure,” Pei Zhiyun said.
Wen Ying took the water, tilted her head back, and took several large gulps. When she finished, she tried to put the cap on herself but realized it was still in Pei Zhiyun’s hand, so she handed the bottle back. Pei Zhiyun took it and screwed the cap on.
The staff member asked the first question: “Teacher Pei, why did you agree to participate in this parenting show? You’ve never done variety shows or reality TV before.”
Pei Zhiyun leaned over to place the water at her feet. “Little Doubao is growing up, and I wanted to take her out to see more of the world. This happened to be the perfect opportunity. I’m very grateful for the director’s invitation.”
The staff member glanced at the cue sheet, hesitating over the next question. It was a tough one. Before asking, her palms were sweaty with nerves. “Teacher Pei, this is your partner’s first time appearing on a reality show. Is there anything you’d like to say to her?”
The director had insisted on this question. She had been afraid to ask, but with a 500-yuan bonus on the line, she bit the bullet.
Pei Zhiyun turned to look at Wen Ying sitting beside her. She answered naturally, “I hope she won’t be too nervous. Just act normally.”
Wen Ying met her gaze, but Pei Zhiyun intentionally looked away.
Feeling that Pei Zhiyun was quite easy to talk to, the staff member relaxed and continued: “Regarding this show, before we officially arrive at the destination, do you have any specific requests for the production’s planning?”
Pei Zhiyun replied softly, “Regarding the planning, I watched the first season recently. I noticed there was a lot of interaction between families, which I liked. I hope that during this season’s recording, we can have even more interaction with Little Doubao.”
“I’ll pass that suggestion along to the director,” the staff member said.
“Thank you.”
After a few more questions, the staff member tucked away her notes and stopped disturbing them, allowing the guests to act naturally for the rest of the trip.
As the car drove on, the high-rises gradually gave way to towns and countryside. It was summer, and the wildflowers along the road were in full bloom. Wen Ying held Little Doubao as they leaned against the window to look out, occasionally letting out soft exclamations of wonder.
The crew explained that because the guests had different schedules, they would all arrive separately. They wouldn’t gather as a group until they reached the destination.
Around 5:00 PM, the car arrived at the filming site. The production staff was waiting for them at the drop-off point. In the center stood a middle-aged man wearing a black hat.
“Teacher Pei, we’ve arrived,” the staff member said.
Pei Zhiyun thanked her. She reached out to gently wake Little Doubao, who was sleeping soundly in Wen Ying’s arms, and woke Wen Ying as well; both of them had been drowsy throughout the journey.
“We’re here. Let’s get our things and get out of the car,” Pei Zhiyun told them.
The mother and daughter opened their eyes in perfect unison, both looking completely dazed and adorable.
