The Gusu Mistake - Chapter 50
The Jiang family was saved, but not completely. The curse they were afflicted with was one that Jiang Ting had painstakingly cultivated to use against them, and it wasn’t so easily broken.
Jiang Yilan’s talent with curses was extraordinary, but even after searching through every book in the Jiang family’s library, she was still at a loss.
“Can’t even you break this curse they’re under?” After settling the Jiang family, Yuan Ruo had stayed in the study with Jiang Yilan for two days, flipping through books without finding a solution. She finally couldn’t help but ask.
“Sigh!” Jiang Yilan shook her head with a sigh. “I can’t. Even with my ice silkworm, not only is it still recovering from the last time I used it to save you and can’t be used at all right now, but even if it could, it wouldn’t be able to break the curse for so many people!”
Yuan Ruo frowned. “So you’re saying the only one who can break the curse on them is Jiang Ting?”
Jiang Yilan closed her eyes in defeat. “He’s already dead, so there’s no point in talking about it now!”
Yuan Ruo’s face was full of guilt. “I’m sorry, it’s all my fault…”
“It’s not your fault!” Jiang Yilan interrupted Yuan Ruo. “You did it all for me. The only one to blame is that vicious Jiang Ting!”
Yuan Ruo clenched her fist. “He wanted your father and brother to die with him!”
“His worthless life isn’t worth the lives of my father and brother!” Jiang Yilan said angrily. Then, her expression suddenly froze, as if she had thought of something.
Seeing this, Yuan Ruo quickly asked, “Did you think of something?”
“I remember now!” Jiang Yilan suddenly began to rummage through the study, pulling out a very old book from a corner.
Yuan Ruo asked, “What’s that?”
“An ancient book!” Jiang Yilan quickly flipped through the pages until she stopped on one. “This is it, the Ice Toad!”
“Ice Toad?” Yuan Ruo subconsciously looked at where Jiang Yilan kept her ice silkworm.
“Not that!” Jiang Yilan said. “It’s a bīng chán!”
Yuan Ruo blinked. “A toad?”
Jiang Yilan took a deep breath. “You could call it that!”
Yuan Ruo’s mouth couldn’t help but twitch. “That thing is pretty disgusting!”
“As long as it’s useful!” Jiang Yilan held up the ancient book for Yuan Ruo to see. “It says here that in the depths of the Extremely Cold Abyss, there is an Ice Toad that is a holy object for breaking curses. If I can get it, my father, my brother, and the rest of the Jiang family will surely be saved!”
Yuan Ruo, however, couldn’t be optimistic. “But this is from an ancient book. It’s hard to say if it’s true, and even if they were once there, they might not be anymore!”
“No matter what!” Jiang Yilan said. “For my father and brother, as long as there is even a sliver of hope, I must go to the Extremely Cold Abyss!”
Although Yuan Ruo disliked toads and wasn’t optimistic about the existence of the Ice Toad, she was still duty-bound when it came to Jiang Yilan’s affairs. “I’ll go with you!”
Jiang Yilan looked into Yuan Ruo’s eyes. “This is my family matter; you don’t need to get involved.”
“What do you mean, ‘your family matter’?” Yuan Ruo was displeased. “After all this, are you still treating me like an outsider?”
“I…” Jiang Yilan opened her mouth but said nothing.
“Yilan!” Yuan Ruo held one of Jiang Yilan’s hands. “Can you try to rely on me a little more?”
“I… we’ll talk about it later!” Jiang Yilan pulled her hand back. “I’ll go check on them and make arrangements.”
“Okay!”
The two went to where the Jiang family was being kept. Their condition was worse than before; in fact, it seemed to be deteriorating.
“Father, Big Brother!” Jiang Yilan went to them. “How are you feeling?”
However, Jiang Zhen was already unconscious. Only Jiang Ze was still awake, and he replied with a sliver of strength, “This curse of Jiang Ting’s is truly tyrannical. I can’t believe we would ultimately be defeated by him!”
“I won’t let anything happen to you!” Jiang Yilan said, bringing up the matter of the Ice Toad. “There’s an Ice Toad in the Extremely Cold Abyss. Even though Jiang Ting is dead, if I can find it, I’ll definitely be able to save you.”
Jiang Ze asked, “So you’re planning to go to the Extremely Cold Abyss?”
Jiang Yilan nodded. “It’s the only way I can save you.”
“Sigh!” Jiang Ze suddenly sighed. “You’re doing so much for us, but back then we…”
“Don’t say anything more, Big Brother!” Jiang Yilan knew what Jiang Ze wanted to say, but now, she didn’t want to hear it. “It’s all in the past!”
Jiang Ze stopped speaking. “Then… when do you plan to leave?”
“The sooner, the better, but…” Jiang Yilan looked around at the other Jiang family members. “With no one to lead the Jiang family, if I just leave, I’m afraid there will be no one to look after you all.”
“This…” Jiang Ze fell silent. He knew his own condition, and without Jiang Yilan, if someone else came to the Jiang family, they would be completely helpless.
Jiang Yilan hesitated for a moment, then took out the still-recovering ice silkworm from her person.
“You’re taking it out again?” Yuan Ruo asked. “Didn’t you say it couldn’t be used?”
“I have to try!” Jiang Yilan had no other choice. Even if the ice silkworm couldn’t completely break the curse, she still used it on Jiang Ze, whose condition was still relatively stable.
“Ugh, ptui!” The ice silkworm lay between Jiang Ze’s lips and teeth, its body contracting and expanding until it was almost completely transparent. Finally, he hunched over and spat out a mouthful of black substance. Upon closer inspection, there were small, moving things inside.
“Big Brother, how do you feel?” Ignoring the curse, Jiang Yilan went to support Jiang Ze.
Jiang Ze weakly waved his hand. “Although I’m still weak, I can feel my strength returning!”
“Whew!” Jiang Yilan finally breathed a sigh of relief. “At last, your curse has been broken, Big Brother!”
“Cough, cough!” Jiang Ze coughed a few more times. “Thank you, little sister!”
“We’re family, there’s no need to thank me!” Jiang Yilan said, collecting the motionless ice silkworm and carefully putting it away. “This little guy really can’t see the light of day for a while!”
Jiang Ze asked Jiang Yilan, “When are you planning to leave, little sister?”
Jiang Yilan thought for a moment. “Tomorrow. There’s no time to wait until you’ve fully recovered, Big Brother!”
