The Gusu Mistake - Chapter 28
Jiang Yilan was very curious, but she wasn’t the type to pry. Since Yuan Ruo was reluctant to talk about the man she had feelings for, Jiang Yilan didn’t press the matter. After a few more days, she barely remembered the incident, and Yuan Ruo’s injuries had almost fully healed.
“Are you still uncomfortable?” Jiang Yilan asked Yuan Ruo, concerned, as they prepared to set off.
Yuan Ruo shook her head. “You’ve taken such good care of me, all my injuries are completely healed!”
“Yikes!” Jiang Yilan bared her teeth slightly. “With a mouth like that, if you were a man, you’d probably break countless girls’ hearts!”
Yuan Ruo didn’t reply, just smiled softly. “Alright, let’s go.”
After bidding farewell to the old woman, the two set off on their journey once again.
“Yuan Ruo!” Jiang Yilan, bored on the road, started a conversation with Yuan Ruo.
Yuan Ruo responded, “Hmm?”
“I’ve been thinking about this for days!” Jiang Yilan looked puzzled. “That day, the thing that demon released to hurt you, was it a ‘gu’ or a ‘yao’?”
“I’m not sure either,” Yuan Ruo thought back to that day. “Before you arrived, I used a spell and tried to slash it with my sword, but it didn’t do anything.”
“But my medicinal powder could hurt it,” Jiang Yilan said. “And later, you managed to split it in half!”
“So, when you think about it,” Yuan Ruo said, “it’s still more like a ‘gu’.”
“In that case, it does seem more like a ‘gu’,” Jiang Yilan agreed. Then she paused, sensing something was off. “But it seemed to have its own consciousness, which a ‘gu’ shouldn’t have.”
“A Corpse Demon Gu,” Yuan Ruo recalled what they had asked Qiu Yue. “That demon said that one was a Corpse Demon Gu that the dead daoist wanted to raise. It’s hard to say he didn’t have another one.”
“That’s right!” Jiang Yilan remembered. “That day, that bastard was vague. What he was hiding was probably this monstrous thing!”
Yuan Ruo asked, “You’ve never heard of this type of ‘gu’ before?”
“How could I have heard of such a thing?” Jiang Yilan said. “Just by the name, you know it’s not something a pure ‘gu’ breeder could create.”
“You’re right about that,” Yuan Ruo said. “That day, I could clearly feel the malevolent energy on that creature. You would probably need to know daoist techniques to create it.”
“Good thing,” Jiang Yilan sighed in relief. “That bastard got bitten to death by his own creation. Serves him right for playing with fire.”
“Those who follow twisted paths often get killed by the backlash,” Yuan Ruo said. “Back when I was at the Jade Splendor Palace, I heard my senior brothers talk about many such cases. But for those looking for shortcuts, there are always new people who follow in their footsteps.”
“Let them follow,” Jiang Yilan clenched her fist. “But if I ever run into one, I’ll kill them!”
“Wow!” Yuan Ruo laughed. “I never would have guessed that you have such a strong killing intent, Yilan!”
“You’re the one who said that killing is for the sake of protecting life!” Jiang Yilan said. “Against these scumbags, you have to fight fire with fire and not let them get away with it!”
“Yes, yes, yes,” Yuan Ruo agreed. “You speak the truth, Lady Jiang!”
“Hey!” Jiang Yilan frowned at Yuan Ruo. “Why do I feel like you’re teasing me?”
“Am I?” Yuan Ruo’s face was full of innocence. “I’m speaking from the bottom of my heart!”
“Bottom of your heart, my foot!” Jiang Yilan squinted and pointed at Yuan Ruo, noticing her barely-there smile. “No, you are definitely teasing me!”
Yuan Ruo gave up the act and burst out laughing. “Yes, I am teasing you. What are you going to do about it?”
“What am I going to do about it?” Jiang Yilan put her hands on her hips, a dangerous look on her face. “I’m going to make you regret it!”
Yuan Ruo backed away. “What are you going to do?”
“What am I going to do?” Jiang Yilan pulled a small bottle out of her clothes.
Yuan Ruo looked at the small bottle. “How can you hide so many things on your person?”
“A lot?” Jiang Yilan blinked.
Yuan Ruo nodded. “Quite a lot.”
“Hehe, don’t worry about it then,” Jiang Yilan uncorked the bottle. “First, let’s try my special itching powder!”
“Yilan, don’t mess around!” Yuan Ruo backed away, but when she saw Jiang Yilan really was about to throw the powder at her, she turned and ran.
Yuan Ruo ran, and Jiang Yilan chased after her. The two of them chased and played, completely unaware that another tail had appeared behind them.
“Han Yan, Jiang Yilan!” The person in the black cloak said their names, then took off their hood, revealing Wu Yunfei’s face.
“Young master? Should we…?”
His subordinate asked Wu Yunfei what to do next, but Wu Yunfei waved his hand to stop him. “Those two women aren’t easy to deal with. If we make a move recklessly again, we’ll probably have a hard time.”
The subordinate asked, “Then are we just going to let it go?”
“Of course not!” Wu Yunfei said. “But we need to think about this in the long term.”
The subordinate asked, “Does the young master already have a plan?”
Wu Yunfei was silent for a moment, then ordered, “You go and have someone notify the Jiang family. Tell them that Han Yan has found out that Han Ming’s death is related to the Jiang family and to deal with it.”
“This…” The subordinate was confused but didn’t dare to ask.
“Hmph!” Wu Yunfei glanced at his subordinate. “That woman isn’t trying to lure the snake out of its hole? Then I’ll do her a favor and let them fight each other first. It’s best if they both end up seriously wounded.”
The subordinate agreed, “That would be for the best. The young master can reap the benefits of the conflict.”
“The benefits are secondary,” Wu Yunfei said, lifting one corner of his mouth. “As long as they don’t get in my way.”
“Yes!” The subordinate saluted. “I will have someone deliver the message immediately.”
“Wait!” Wu Yunfei called the subordinate back. “I have another task for you.”
The subordinate returned. “The young master’s command!”
Wu Yunfei said, “You saw Qiu Yue’s Corpse Demon Gu. Did you think it was powerful?”
The subordinate said, “Yes, it was very powerful. If it weren’t for Jiang Yilan, Han Yan would have died that day.”
“So, if a thing that powerful can be made by Qiu Yue, why can’t I make one?” Wu Yunfei ordered, “Take some men and go find me a newly formed ‘yao’ spirit. You must find one!”
“Ah, this…” The subordinate looked troubled. “Subordinate… I don’t know where to find one, and second… I don’t know daoist techniques…”
“You…” Wu Yunfei was about to get angry, but then he thought about it and realized it was true. He changed his tone, “Forget it. First, have someone go to the Jiang family. We’ll reconsider the matter of raising the Corpse Demon Gu.”
“Yes!”
