The Golden Cane and the Wild Rose - Chapter 21
Chapter 21
“Jail? Why is my dad in jail?” Yun Ran asked in disbelief.
“Did my dad break the law or something?”
“This…” The British man stopped talking, looking fearfully at Jiang Musheng.
Jiang Musheng said, “Speak clearly.”
“It’s… it’s you who personally sent Scar into jail, sir. Have you forgotten?”
“Me?” Jiang Musheng furrowed his brows suspiciously.
“Mr. Jiang, was it you?”
Yun Ran suddenly felt like her world was collapsing.
It was Jiang Musheng who had sent her dad to jail, and here she was, desperately begging him for help to find him.
“Ah Ran, I don’t know the exact situation. Give me some time to look into it.”
“Okay…” Yun Ran’s voice trembled. “Go and check. I want to go see my dad.”
“I’ll have someone take you. If it really was me who sent him in, then your dad must have done something wrong. I’ll see if I can have the Governor of Hong Kong withdraw the charges.”
Yun Ran tightly clutched the bloodstained pager and got into the car Jiang Musheng arranged for her, heading to the prison.
After the car drove away, Jiang Musheng looked away and said in a low voice, “Ah Biao, find out the details of this matter as soon as possible. Which one is Ah Ran’s dad? We’ve sent too many people in this year.”
“Mr. Jiang,” Ah Biao took a deep breath. “That British guy just said Scar. Miss Yun’s dad is Scar. Have you forgotten?”
“Scar?”
“That turncoat Scar who helped an outsider kidnap Miss before, remember?” Ah Biao said.
“So it was him.” Jiang Musheng’s eyes darkened.
He asked Ah Biao, “After all this time, is he still alive in jail?”
“He’s probably alive but won’t last long. He was barely holding on when he was sent in. He’s bound to be bullied inside.”
Jiang Musheng fell silent.
Ah Biao said remorsefully, “It’s my fault for being too conceited. When you wanted to keep Miss Yun by your side, I should have investigated her background first.”
“It’s no use talking about it now.”
“Mr. Jiang, are you… planning… to release Scar?” Ah Biao asked.
Jiang Musheng said, “I need to think about it carefully.”
With that, Jiang Musheng went to the kitchen. He, as usual, prepared his own breakfast.
Jiang Xueyu woke up and came downstairs. Seeing Ah Biao standing in the living room, she asked, “Ah Biao, what happened? I heard some commotion just now.”
Ah Biao told Jiang Xueyu everything that had just happened.
Jiang Xueyu exclaimed, “Oh, so that Uncle Scar is my sister-in-law’s adoptive father.”
“Miss, he kidnapped you. Aren’t you angry at all?”
“Of course I was, but the anger has faded. I’m okay now, aren’t I? Uncle Scar is my sister-in-law’s adoptive father. My brother’s relationship finally made a little progress. I can’t let it be ruined because of me.”
Jiang Xueyu lifted the hem of her skirt and ran into the kitchen.
“Brother, go talk to the Governor of Hong Kong right now. Tell him to withdraw the charges and release him.”
“Release him?” Jiang Musheng turned around to look at his naive sister.
“You know who Scar is, and you dare to ask me to release him.”
“I know. Isn’t Scar my sister-in-law’s adoptive father?”
“Yes, but he’s not just Yun Ran’s adoptive father. He’s also a mole planted in our family by others. He’s a despicable turncoat!”
“Xueyu, how many lives do you have? You were kidnapped last time and came back unharmed, but you won’t be that lucky every time!”
“Do you understand?”
“I… I understand, Brother. Don’t… don’t be angry.”
This was the first time Jiang Xueyu had been scolded so harshly by her brother. She lowered her head, both scared and wronged.
“What do you want for breakfast?”
Jiang Musheng softened his tone and asked gently.
“I want a fried egg, Brother. Can you make me one?”
“Okay.”
The pan heated up until it smoked. Jiang Musheng added a small amount of oil and cracked two sterile eggs into it.
The oil in the pan today was like his irritable mood, sizzling and spitting. A drop of hot oil splashed onto his hand, and a blister immediately formed on his fair skin.
“Brother!” Jiang Xueyu exclaimed.
“I’m fine.” Jiang Musheng seemed not to feel the pain, only using the spatula to flip the two eggs.
A blister was exchanged for two perfect sun-shaped fried eggs. White congee was simmering in one clay pot, and another clay pot held preserved egg and lean pork congee, which was Yun Ran’s favorite.
“Brother, are we waiting for my sister-in-law to come back for breakfast?”
Jiang Musheng said, “Eat the fried eggs first.”
Jiang Xueyu ate one fried egg, but she wanted to save the other one for her sister-in-law.
Jiang Musheng looked at his wristwatch and asked, “Xueyu, do you really not hold any grudge against Scar?”
“A little, because he kidnapped me. But he was also very good to me. He didn’t hurt me and even protected me at the last moment. If he hadn’t hesitated, Brother might not have been able to save me.”
“Besides, he’s my sister-in-law’s adoptive father. Of course, I hope Brother can forgive Scar so that your relationship with my sister-in-law won’t be too affected.”
“Can it really be unaffected?”
“Yes. Scar made a mistake, and Brother sent him to jail for a while. That’s fair. My sister-in-law isn’t an unreasonable person. If we’re willing to let Scar out early, she should be very grateful.”
Jiang Musheng said, “I’ll think about it some more.”
“What else is there to think about, Brother?”
“If you were in my position, you would have to consider things very carefully. Acting on emotion is like being blinded by lust.”
“Blinded by lust?” Jiang Xueyu said, not understanding. “Brother, you’re taking this way too seriously.”
“It’s because I’ve protected you too well that you don’t know how dangerous the outside world is. Xueyu, I don’t blame you, but it’s precisely by making careful choices every time that we’ve both survived until now.”
“I don’t understand, Brother. I really don’t.”
Jiang Xueyu blinked innocently. Her world had always been simple, and she didn’t have much contact with the outside world, so her thoughts were simple.
Jiang Musheng looked at his sister, not wanting her to worry about things she didn’t understand.
“It’s okay if you don’t understand. Finish your meal and go back to your room. I need to be alone and think things through.”
