- The Ghost Insists on Giving Me a Beautiful and Powerful Wife!
- Chapter 7 - She and Her Wife Aren’t Very Close
Jiang Huaining’s smile disappeared the moment Xia Yu walked in.
Although Jiang Huaining and Xia Yu had a superior–subordinate relationship, anyone with eyes could tell that the two of them did not get along at all.
Xia Yu’s hostility toward Jiang Huaining was real, and Jiang Huaining’s disdain for Xia Yu was just as genuine.
Yu Ruoyin still preferred seeing Jiang Huaining smile, still liked hearing her soft, gentle voice. Once Jiang Huaining’s face turned cold, she only wanted to run away.
She tried to inch to the side, but Jiang Huaining suddenly hooked an arm around her shoulder:
“Be good.”
Yu Ruoyin caught a faint fragrance.
Following the scent, she saw Jiang Huaining’s fair, soft arm.
The fragrance locked up her sense of smell—and locked up her footsteps, keeping her from moving away.
She couldn’t be blamed for being captivated.
Jiang Huaining really was enchanting.
“So good.” Jiang Huaining gently pinched her cheek before letting her go.
The fragrance withdrew, and her mind returned to clarity.
That was when she heard Xia Yu’s mocking laughter. By the time Yu Ruoyin turned to look, Xia Yu’s expression was back to normal.
Xia Yu pointed at the group of ghosts and asked:
“Boss, what should we do with these ghosts? Deliver them to the Underworld? Or should we make some business out of them?”
Jiang Huaining swept her gaze over the ghosts. When her eyes passed over the red-dressed female ghost, they turned harsh for a moment, though the sharpness was quickly hidden:
“We’re open for business. Naturally, we can’t let a single customer slip away.”
“Pretty—”
Before Yu Ruoyin could call her wife, Jiang Huaining pointed to the red-dressed female ghost:
“Start with you.”
Yu Ruoyin’s heart, which had just lifted with a bit of hope, sank. She had wanted Jiang Huaining not to do business with that ghost—after all, Jiang Huaining had clearly seen how that red-dressed ghost had tried to devour her soul and steal her body.
Although Yu Ruoyin hadn’t been at the milk tea shop long, she had a vague feeling that Jiang Huaining didn’t have to take this deal.
She was doing it simply because she didn’t care enough about Yu Ruoyin.
Otherwise, why would she do business with a ghost that had hurt her?
Yu Ruoyin understood that her relationship with Jiang Huaining was only just beginning, and she couldn’t demand too much. But still, she couldn’t help feeling disappointed.
She grew sulky and refused to say another word.
The first to notice her mood wasn’t Jiang Huaining, but Xia Yu, who was watching the show with amusement.
Xia Yu stared at her and laughed:
“Small person, big temper.”
Only then did Jiang Huaining turn back toward her.
“What’s wrong?”
“Prett—Auntie Ning, I’m fine.” Yu Ruoyin forced the words out, voice tight with resentment. Once she said it, she didn’t dare meet Jiang Huaining’s eyes and lowered her head.
Unexpectedly, Jiang Huaining accepted the title. A soft sigh drifted to Yu Ruoyin’s ear:
“If A-Yin likes it, then call me that.”
Yu Ruoyin instantly felt like she had made a mistake. She had only wanted to apologize.
But when she looked up again, Jiang Huaining was no longer looking at her.
Jiang Huaining crushed the ghosts one by one into wisps of black mist and sent them toward Yu Ruoyin’s neck. Yu Ruoyin widened her eyes in terror, unable to believe Jiang Huaining would do such a thing to her.
She thought Jiang Huaining was letting the ghosts kill her—yet the black mist sank into the red jade fruit at her throat and disappeared.
Yu Ruoyin immediately felt guilty.
She had not only deliberately called Jiang Huaining by a name she might not like, but had even doubted her intentions.
Shrinking her head, Yu Ruoyin swore to herself never to overthink again.
Seeing her serious little face, Jiang Huaining thought she was frightened:
“Without your permission, those ghosts can’t leave the Chiyang.”
After speaking, Jiang Huaining suddenly coughed.
Faint streaks of blood spread before Yu Ruoyin’s eyes, leaving her stunned.
Was Jiang Huaining hurt?
Her last bit of resentment about the red-dressed ghost vanished at once. She edged closer, unable to believe it:
“You’re injured?”
Jiang Huaining turned her back and pushed away Yu Ruoyin’s reaching hand.
“I’m fine.”
“But you—”
Yu Ruoyin had clearly seen the blood. She tried to move around to face her, but Jiang Huaining pushed her even farther away:
“None of your business!”
The cold, harsh voice shattered Yu Ruoyin’s courage.
She froze, rooted to the spot, not daring to move.
Without looking back, Jiang Huaining walked straight out:
“Xia Yu, stay here.”
“Yes, Boss.” Xia Yu responded in a strange sing-song voice, grinning.
But as soon as Jiang Huaining left the doorway, Xia Yu’s smile stiffened.
She studied Yu Ruoyin with a cold sneer:
“I really don’t understand—what’s so good about humans?”
It was obvious Xia Yu didn’t like her. Jiang Huaining had to know that, yet still left her behind with Xia Yu.
The more Yu Ruoyin thought about it, the more wronged she felt—but she had no one to complain to.
She just stood there, dazed, until Xia Yu grew impatient and urged her:
“Go pack your things.”
“What?”
Xia Yu smirked with malicious amusement:
“You’re our boss’s little wife. Of course you’re coming to live with her.”
Yu Ruoyin still didn’t move, and Xia Yu’s smile turned cruel:
“Or you can stay. I’ll just tell the boss exactly what happened. When we leave, those ghosts in your necklace will crawl out—don’t be scared then.”
“No!” Yu Ruoyin screamed in terror. “W–Wait for me!”
She rushed toward her room, only to be stopped by Xia Yu’s shout:
“Hey, while you’re packing, let that old hag Yan out for me to play with.”
“Old hag Yan?”
Xia Yu pointed to the red jade fruit at Yu Ruoyin’s throat:
“The oldest one inside there.”
Yu Ruoyin touched the red jade fruit and shook her head.
“I…I don’t know how.”
Jiang Huaining had told her its purpose, but not how to use it.
Xia Yu curled her lips disdainfully:
“Just picture her appearance and she’ll come out.”
Yu Ruoyin quickly followed the instruction—and sure enough, the old lady appeared.
The moment she came out, she bolted toward the door. But before she could get far, Xia Yu yanked her back.
“Old hag Yan, where do you think you’re going?”
Clearly they knew each other. The old lady bowed respectfully, fawning:
“Lord Xia, while Lord Jiang isn’t here, please let me go.”
Xia Yu didn’t budge.
“No can do. The boss already said she’d do business with you. If you run, I can’t explain it.”
The old lady gave a bitter smile.
“Lord Xia, when did the Four Spirits Shop start forcing business?”
“You’re the one who provoked this little girl.” Xia Yu pulled her back, then shouted at Yu Ruoyin:
“And you—get packing!”
Xia Yu was truly vicious.
She was fiercer than the ghosts themselves. Even the old lady flinched when Xia Yu shouted, making Yu Ruoyin shrink back in fright.
“O–Okay…I’ll go.”
While packing her things, Yu Ruoyin realized Xia Yu was likely bluffing.
If Xia Yu needed her to release the old lady instead of doing it herself, then the red jade fruit must be an extraordinary treasure. If Xia Yu couldn’t extract the ghosts from it, how could they possibly break out on their own?
Xia Yu was deliberately trying to scare her.
Even so, Yu Ruoyin kept packing.
Because even if the ghosts inside couldn’t escape, other ghosts might come after her.
At the moment, sticking with Jiang Huaining was safest.
Even if she was angry at Jiang Huaining, the truth was that among all these non-human beings, Jiang Huaining treated her best.
When Yu Ruoyin finished packing and came out, the old lady was still pleading with Xia Yu:
“Lord Xia, I really dare not get involved in the Four Spirits Shop’s business. Please, let me go.”
Jiang Huaining had once said that the shop’s business was about solving customers’ troubles. So why was this old lady so terrified—like the shop wasn’t a milk tea store at all, but some great calamity?
Yu Ruoyin pricked up her ears, listening carefully.
But then Xia Yu rolled her eyes at her.
Confused, Yu Ruoyin stared back, until Xia Yu glared harder, exasperated:
“Put her back already. You really planning to let her run off?”
“Oh.”
Yu Ruoyin focused on the old lady, rubbed the jade fruit, and imagined her going back inside. And sure enough, the old lady was pulled back in.
Xia Yu gave a mocking chuckle.
“Not completely stupid, then.”
Afraid of Xia Yu, Yu Ruoyin followed her downstairs but kept far behind.
From below, Xia Yu’s airy voice floated up:
“Walk too slow and you might bump into a ghost.”
Yu Ruoyin quickly ran a few steps, only slowing once she caught up.
Panting, she heard Xia Yu’s cruel laugh:
“Living humans are such cowards.”
“You…” Yu Ruoyin was scared, but Xia Yu’s nasty attitude riled her. She mustered her courage and threatened:
“If you scare me again, I’ll tell Auntie Ning.”
Xia Yu only shrugged, unconcerned.
“Only weak little girls run to complain.”
Yu Ruoyin wanted to argue, but it was true—she had no strength.
If she were facing another human, no matter how strong, she could still fight with her life and maybe bite off a piece of flesh.
But against ghosts, against beings beyond human power—
She had no chance.
So she fell silent, while Xia Yu laughed wildly:
“If you want revenge on me, first learn something useful.”
Yu Ruoyin gritted her teeth.
“What should I learn to kill you?”
“You’re asking me?”
“Yes!”
Yu Ruoyin was certain Xia Yu would tell her.
Because Xia Yu was arrogant enough.
Sure enough, Xia Yu answered:
“I’m not a ghost, not a demon. I’m a spirit. The most powerful spirit in the world. Nothing you learn will matter—unless you gain spirit power as strong as Jiang Huaining’s.”
Spirit?
If Xia Yu was a spirit, then Jiang Huaining must be one too.
Her hope of defeating Xia Yu was crushed, but at least she had learned Jiang Huaining’s true race.
What exactly was the difference between spirits and ghosts?
She had met plenty of ghosts by now, but her understanding of Jiang Huaining’s world was still far too shallow.
She really needed to ask Jiang Huaining more—if Jiang Huaining would be willing to answer her.
