The Ghost Insists on Giving Me a Beautiful and Powerful Wife! - Chapter 31.2
The Ghost General did not answer Zhuang Ciyue. She approached them aggressively, her body shrouded in ghost energy pressing against the protective shield. The golden Sanskrit symbols immediately turned into chains, binding her four limbs. The golden light trembled, and threads of golden fire began to burn her, starting from her neck and right arm. The flames quickly spread over her entire body.
Yet, she did not stop, but continued to walk forward.
The chains binding her were snapped one by one, and her robe showed signs of damage.
Yu Ruoyin didn’t want to offend the Underworld General and quickly called out: “Nan He.”
Nan He hurriedly withdrew the protective shield, and the broken chains vanished as well.
The Ghost General gently patted her robe, and the damaged red robe instantly returned to its original state.
She still didn’t speak, but walked step by step in front of Nan He: “Spirit?”
She reached out her hand, intending to take off Nan He’s hood, but retracted it abruptly before touching Nan He. A deep, hoarse voice escaped her throat: “You shouldn’t be here.”
Nan He confusedly tugged at the sleeves of her black robe, standing still.
Despite her fear of the Underworld General, Yu Ruoyin took the initiative to speak: “General, we didn’t deliberately stay here. We forgot the time and got trapped.”
“Let’s go.” Threads of faint blue ghost-thread flew out of the lantern the Ghost General was holding, wrapping around the three of them: “I’ll escort you out.”
She turned and walked forward, the ghost-threads pulling the three of them to follow her steps.
Just two steps out, a wisp of golden fire flew out of the red jade fruit and burned the ghost-thread.
Yu Ruoyin stopped. She noticed a flash of gold on Nan He’s wrist, and the ghost-thread pulling her also snapped.
The Ghost General’s ghost-thread was now only pulling Zhuang Ciyue.
The Ghost General didn’t turn back. Two more ghost-threads flew out of the lantern: “If you want to leave, don’t resist my power.”
Zhuang Ciyue did turn back and saw the broken ghost-threads on their bodies. Her eyes widened in astonishment: “Little Yu, Nan He, fine, but how did you break free from the ghost-energy? This General’s power is really strong.”
“No, it wasn’t me.”
She told the truth, but Zhuang Ciyue misunderstood: “Nan He, how could you help Little Yu break free from the ghost-energy and not help me? That’s playing favorites!”
Nan He didn’t answer her. She reached out and hooked the ghost-thread, allowing it to wrap around her wrist again.
Yu Ruoyin imitated her and let the ghost-thread wrap around her. As she followed the Ghost General forward, she spoke to Zhuang Ciyue: “Sister Yue, is this General very powerful?”
“An Underworld General appearing here at this hour must be chasing down evil spirits from the Underworld. If she weren’t strong, she definitely wouldn’t dare to come. She might even be one of the Ten Great Ghost Generals. Although the ranks of Underworld Envoys and Underworld Generals are similar, Envoys have a high casualty rate and generally don’t live as long as Generals. In terms of strength, Generals are still stronger, especially the selected Ten Great Ghost Generals—each one has the skill level of the First Underworld Envoy.”
“While that’s true, I still prefer Underworld Envoys. Although more of them die, they’re very free. They can travel freely between the mortal world and the Underworld. Generals, without the King of the Underworld’s command, can’t easily go to the mortal world, or they’ll be punished. If I die, I definitely want to be an Underworld Envoy. But this is not something I can control. I heard that the Underworld selects ghosts based on their fate-grids. Those with heavy Yin energy stay in the Underworld, and those with heavy Yang energy compete to be Underworld Envoys. They say you can apply based on personal preference, but few applications are successful, after all, it concerns the growth of ghost power.”
“…”
Zhuang Ciyue seemed to have forgotten that the Ghost General was walking ahead, and she fully expressed her dislike for the profession of an Underworld General.
“Sister Yue.”
Yu Ruoyin called out, and only then did Zhuang Ciyue realize her slip of the tongue.
She coughed abruptly twice, her face full of remorse.
Yu Ruoyin quickly apologized to the Ghost General for her: “Your Excellency, I’m sorry, she didn’t mean to…”
“No need to apologize, she is very correct.” The expression under the Ghost General’s mask was inscrutable, and her cold voice did not sound like a joke: “I also think Underworld Envoys are more free.”
With the Ghost General leading the way, they successfully left the Ghost Market before the full closure of the ghost gate.
The area outside the Ghost Market was also different from when they arrived. Layers of golden mist covered the original Yin mist, and the dazzling golden light blurred their vision.
Yu Ruoyin only felt a blur before her eyes. Before she could react, her body suddenly fell into a warm embrace.
She subconsciously tried to struggle, but suddenly heard someone call her: “A-Yin.”
Jiang Huaining!
It was Jiang Huaining’s voice.
Yu Ruoyin’s vision had not yet recovered. She instinctively reached out to touch the person holding her—a slender waist and a familiar scent.
Her nose twitched following the scent, tracking it all the way to the strongest concentration in the curve of the neck.
Her nose lightly brushed against her neck, and she felt the soft, delicate skin and a slight tremble.
She could now be sure that the person holding her was Jiang Huaining.
Yu Ruoyin couldn’t help but hug Jiang Huaining back, burying her head in her neck.
The warm fragrance enveloped her, the heat dispelling all coldness, soothing her restlessness, and calming her chaotic heart little by little.
This was her support.
“Your Excellency, I missed you very much.”
With an outlet for her emotions, Yu Ruoyin realized that she was even more dependent than Nan He.
She couldn’t see Jiang Huaining’s expression, but she could feel Jiang Huaining holding her even tighter.
Jiang Huaining probably missed her too.
The sounds around her were noisy, and Yu Ruoyin couldn’t hear clearly, only catching a few arguments.
Suddenly, one voice became clear—it was the Ghost General’s voice: “Boss Jiang, are you trying to smash our Ghost Market?”
Her vision slowly recovered, and she finally saw the current situation clearly.
The golden mist hadn’t appeared out of thin air but was radiating from Jiang Huaining. It wasn’t aimless; it was currently rushing frantically towards the closed Ghost Market. The Ghost General standing in the golden mist was completely enveloped in golden fire, her red robe more severely torn than when she encountered Nan He, and even her skin showed signs of scorching.
And not just her, but Xia Yu as well.
Xia Yu was wrapped in golden chains.
The golden chains had barbs that dug into her skin. Blood mixed with fire seeped from the wounds, igniting the entire chain.
Lu Qingzhen had returned from the Underworld and was currently standing by Xia Yu’s side, guarding her.
Xia Yu looked a bit weak, but her presence was not diminished at all.
She looked in Jiang Huaining’s direction and spoke to Lu Qingzhen: “Do you still think I’m crazy? Look again now—who looks more like a lunatic, Jiang Huaining or me?”
Lu Qingzhen didn’t speak, but the look in her eyes towards Jiang Huaining was not as respectful as before; it was much more complicated.
She took a deep breath: “Boss Jiang, Little Yu and the others have already come out.”
Jiang Huaining didn’t speak. She squeezed hard with her hand, and the golden mist covering the front of the Ghost Market dispersed.
Her lips instantly turned much whiter, and the strength of her embrace on Yu Ruoyin lessened. She suddenly swayed, and Yu Ruoyin quickly held her, preventing her from falling.
Jiang Huaining pressed Yu Ruoyin’s wrist, turned her head, a metallic sweetness surged up her throat, and she spat out two mouthfuls of blood.
The color of the blood was strange—gold mixed with red—but it was still shocking.
Yu Ruoyin’s body suddenly froze, her hands clutching Jiang Huaining trembling: “Y-Your Excellency!”
She was terrified.
Terrified that something had happened to Jiang Huaining.
Jiang Huaining seemed fearless the moment she saw her. She gripped Yu Ruoyin’s wrist, golden mist swirling in her eyes: “A-Yin just called me Your Excellency?”
Yu Ruoyin realized that an overly intense gaze could also burn the skin. She instinctively evaded: “D-Didn’t they all call you that?”
“A-Yin.”
Jiang Huaining coughed softly, mixed with threads of blood.
Yu Ruoyin hugged her tightly, preventing her weakened body from falling.
The way she carefully protected Jiang Huaining was observed by Xia Yu. The golden chains wrapped around her had dissipated. Leaning on Lu Qingzhen, she let out a low laugh: “Jiang Huaining, you should thank me. Lian Zhen’s demonic power can awaken memories. Maybe the little girl saw something too.”
“You did that on purpose!” Lu Qingzhen was stunned. She instantly backed away, but seeing Xia Yu about to fall, she relented and reached out to grab her arm.
“No, I never told them to look for Lian Zhen. They found her themselves.” Xia Yu malevolently hooked her arm around Lu Qingzhen’s neck and whispered with a chuckle close to her ear: “A-Zhen, I should thank you. Thank you for suggesting she come to the Ghost Market to buy the materials for the Painting Witch.”
Lu Qingzhen angrily pinched Xia Yu: “What do you want?”
“Lian Zhen’s demon core.” Xia Yu stated her demand openly: “A half-human, half-demon, a demon core of over five thousand years—how precious is that…”
“If you take the demon core, she will die!”
Lu Qingzhen was furious, but Xia Yu didn’t care: “You don’t want her to die, and Jiang Huaining doesn’t want her to die, so why don’t you ask if she herself wants to die?”
“What do you mean?”
“The person she is looking for—when she finds them, she will die.” Xia Yu was severely injured. It could be said that she and Jiang Huaining were equally weak now. Both were one step away from falling without support, yet her arrogant and unrestrained demeanor hadn’t changed at all: “That’s the reason why our boss refused to do business with Lian Zhen all those times she came to the Four Spirits Shop.”
Jiang Huaining leaned on Yu Ruoyin, walking forward with her, not even sparing a glance for Xia Yu.
“What’s the point of stopping a demon who wants to die?” Xia Yu was still bleeding, and her mouth showed no signs of stopping: “Are you going to blame me? Didn’t you give me hope? The Jade Puppet’s cadaver core…”
“Xia Yu!” Jiang Huaining interrupted Xia Yu: “You shouldn’t have schemed against A-Yin.”
“I didn’t know they would spend so much time in the Ghost Market. Lian Zhen was useless; what does that have to do with me? You…”
Jiang Huaining gave her a cold look: “Do you really not know how long it takes to awaken a sealed memory?”
Xia Yu did not speak again.
Yu Ruoyin didn’t understand why things had escalated to this point, only knowing that the source was her: “I’m sorry, I caused trouble again.”
“A-Yin.”
Jiang Huaining rubbed the red jade fruit on Yu Ruoyin’s neck, implying that she knew everything that had happened: “Evil spirits are different from ghosts; they are chi. Once they occupy your body, my power won’t recognize your chi anymore, and you… cough cough…”
“Don’t evil spirits only invade inanimate objects?”
Zhuang Ciyue’s confused voice came over.
She didn’t know, but Yu Ruoyin did: she was dead.
Once an evil spirit entered her body, if Jiang Huaining’s power didn’t recognize her, it would disappear. At that point, her body would be like that day—all her bones shattered, flesh mixed with broken tendons… completely dead.
Jiang Huaining was afraid.
