- Chapter 34 - Qi Ran’s Separation Anxiety
“Ranran, didn’t we already have dinner?”
Gu Han picked Qi Ran up and pinched his soft, delicate cheeks. “If you eat any more, you’ll be stuffed. It’s not good for your stomach. If you want hot pot, we can have it for lunch tomorrow.”
“Alright then, hubby,” Qi Ran was very obedient, hooking his arms around Gu Han’s neck. “We’ll eat tomorrow, hehe.”
“Little baby, I have to send you back to sleep now,” Gu Han carried Qi Ran back to the bedroom, saying softly, “Once the little baby wakes up, we can have hot pot.”
“Hubby, actually, I’m a little hungry,” Qi Ran squeezed closer into Gu Han’s arms, looking aggrieved. “I didn’t eat enough at dinner.”
“Ranran baby didn’t get full? But I’ve already put the dried fish in the fridge. It’s too cold. Ranran can’t eat it.”
Gu Han sat on the bed holding Qi Ran, discussing it with him: “How about this? I’ll see what Yu Shen wants for a late-night snack. His taste happens to be quite light. Once he’s done making it, I’ll bring some for Ranran to eat, okay?”
Qi Ran was very happy and nodded: “Okay, hubby.”
“Then I’ll go take a look, though Yu Shen usually sticks to sandwiches,” Gu Han tucked Qi Ran in, his fingertips lightly stroking Qi Ran’s cheek. He asked softly, “Will Ranran not like eating that?”
“No,” Qi Ran hugged Gu Han’s arm, his voice sweet. “Sandwiches have ham and eggs; I like that.”
“So my wife wants to eat meat? That makes sense, after all, you are my little kitten wife, and kittens love fish and meat. I understand.”
Gu Han cupped Qi Ran’s cheeks and leaned in to kiss him several times. “Wife, be good. Tomorrow, I’ll prepare meat for you to eat.”
Qi Ran hugged Gu Han: “Hubby is the best.”
Once Gu Han had coaxed Qi Ran, he went to the kitchen to find Yu Shen. To his surprise, Yu Shen was still lying on the floor playing with the puppy. Gu Han checked the coffee machine and saw there was still some time left for the beans to grind. When he returned and saw Yu Shen looking like a fool being entertained by the dog, he couldn’t help but laugh.
“Shen, don’t you have a germaphobia? You’re lying on the floor, wrinkling your suit. Normally, you’d be having a breakdown.”
“The puppy is just too cute and well-behaved, Gu Han, I really can’t help it,” Yu Shen ignored the wrinkles on his suit and hugged the puppy’s head. “Can I visit often in the future? I hope it won’t disturb you and your wife.”
“Of course you can. You’re a guest I usually can’t even move. I invite you for holiday dinners and you always say you’re busy, even though Jianchen doesn’t allow overtime.” Gu Han opened the fridge. “Still having a sandwich for dinner?”
Yu Shen nodded: “Yeah.”
“Make two,” Gu Han took out vacuum-sealed salt-baked chicken breast, smoked bacon, two eggs, and a stack of soft toast from the fridge. “My wife said he’s a bit hungry and didn’t get full tonight. Since he just had surgery, I didn’t dare let him eat too much earlier. I’ll share a sandwich with him.”
“Alright,” Yu Shen gave the puppy’s ears one last rub before reluctantly getting up. “Does Qi Ran want it warm? You go upstairs and stay with him. Once the sandwiches are ready and heated, I’ll bring them up to you.”
Gu Han nodded: “Thank you.”
As Gu Han reached the corner of the stairs, Yu Shen asked: “Want coffee?”
“Yes,” Gu Han stopped. “But I’ll wait until I’m writing documents tonight to drink it. Leave a cup for me.”
Yu Shen gave an “OK” gesture and began washing his hands to start cooking.
Gu Han was so full that he flopped down next to Qi Ran as soon as he entered the room, acting spoiled: “Wife, I’m so full.”
“I’ll hold you,” Qi Ran lifted the covers, waiting for Gu Han to come over, then hugged him tightly. “Hubby, I’m going to touch your round belly now.”
Gu Han squeezed into Qi Ran’s arms: “Okay, wife.”
Actually, Gu Han felt something was a bit strange when he came back. Qi Ran had been sleepy just a moment ago, but now he was suddenly very alert, and he seemed to have been staring at the bedroom door for a long time. The moment Gu Han opened the door, he met Qi Ran’s gaze.
Gu Han didn’t know what was wrong with Qi Ran. He didn’t know how to bring up these tiny abnormalities. In the past, Qi Ran was always angry with him, so Gu Han thought it might be better not to ask, lest it be a potential offense to Qi Ran. Suppressing the confusion in his heart, he simply continued to act spoiled in Qi Ran’s arms.
Qi Ran touched Gu Han’s stomach, gently rubbing it, teasing him: “Was the noodle soup that good? You’re so full your abs are bulging.”
Gu Han nodded earnestly: “Super delicious, wife. I’ve never had noodles this good.”
Qi Ran curved his lips: “Is my skill really better than those chefs in high-end restaurants?”
“It’s truly delicious, wife. It’s not that they aren’t good, but they don’t understand my heart like you do. The noodles they make aren’t as suited to my taste as yours. Being perfectly to my taste is what makes it delicious; this flavor is irreplaceable. I know in my heart that you wanted to cook noodles for me just once.” Gu Han held Qi Ran and kissed him. “My little angel Ranran, why are you so good to me? I love Ranran, and I don’t expect anything in return.”
“Loving me is your business,” Qi Ran pinched Gu Han’s nose, his expression turning serious. “Wanting to love you in the same way and to the same degree, that is my business.”
“My kitten wife is so domineering,” Gu Han buried his face in Qi Ran’s neck, inhaling the warm, sweet milky scent of his skin. “I like it so much, I really do. Please, Ranran, let’s love each other for a lifetime. Let’s never be apart.”
When Gu Han mentioned the word “apart,” Qi Ran’s fingertips trembled slightly.
“Gu Han,” Yu Shen knocked lightly on the door. “The sandwich for Secretary Qi is heated.”
Gu Han got up to open the door and took the plate. Yu Shen asked: “You said you were going to work and write documents tonight. Where should I wait for you?”
“Third floor, there’s an office,” Gu Han pointed upstairs. “Or the e-sports room is fine too. It’s equipped with three top-tier Apple desktops and three 4K screens with 5090s. Take your pick.”
Yu Shen said he’d go to the e-sports room. He could eat his dinner and relax with some games while waiting for Gu Han to start work.
After Yu Shen left, Gu Han closed the door tightly. Like a waiter in a Western restaurant, he held the plate and said softly, “Ranran sweetheart, your sandwich is ready.”
Qi Ran was amused by Gu Han and laughed. When he got out of bed, Gu Han thought he was reaching for the sandwich and handed him the plate, but Qi Ran walked straight into Gu Han’s arms.
“Hubby,” Qi Ran’s soft cheek rubbed against Gu Han’s neck. “Are you still spending so much effort to make me happy?”
Gu Han was holding the plate in one hand and could only wrap his other arm around Qi Ran’s waist. “Of course. I would give everything for my Ranran sweetheart.”
“Hubby,” Qi Ran finally took the sandwich he wanted and took a small bite. His snowy cheeks puffed out as he said softly, “I want to watch the rain. Can we sit by the window to eat?”
“Of course,” Gu Han pulled back the curtains and sat with Qi Ran on the sofa, making it easy for him to watch the lightning and thunder of the rainy night through the floor to ceiling window. “Little Ranran, chew slowly, it’ll be easier on your stomach.”
Qi Ran looked out the window and suddenly asked: “Hubby, actually, Manager Yu is quite handsome, isn’t he?”
“Yes,” Gu Han nodded. “He is handsome. He has a very scholarly look, but his personality has edges while still being gentle and polite. Plus, he’s read a lot of books. You wouldn’t believe how many people chased him when he was younger, they practically formed a line. Even now, people are constantly asking for his WeChat.”
“Then, since you’ve worked with him for so many years,” Qi Ran was curious, “have you never dated him?”
Gu Han said bluntly: “No, wife. He has a fiancée, did you forget?”
Qi Ran continued: “Has hubby never liked him even a little bit?”
“No, not at all. He and I are just brothers, the kind who go through thick and thin together. It’s higher than a typical friendship, but it’s only higher than friendship.” Gu Han described the feeling of falling for Qi Ran at first sight: “Actually, I didn’t understand what real ‘liking’ was before. Over the years, people introduced me to others who met my criteria, but without exception, I never had the desire to meet them. I had reservations because of Jianchen. I couldn’t just trust anyone. Until I met you, Ranran. That heartbeat, that sudden impulse to go and register for marriage with you. I had never felt that before. I confirmed it in my heart many times before I decided to pursue you. I was afraid of misinterpreting a flicker of excitement and ruining your life.”
Qi Ran tilted his head, resting it on Gu Han’s shoulder. “Hubby is so devoted, always thinking of me in everything.”
“I will always be loyal to Ranran, devoted to Ranran,” Gu Han held Qi Ran in his arms, saying softly, “You are my everything, my life, and all of my love.”
Qi Ran kissed Gu Han and offered him a bite of the sandwich: “Hubby, try a bite, it’s good.”
“I’m so full, Ranran,” Gu Han took Qi Ran’s hand and placed it on his stomach. “Feel it, Ranran, my stomach is bloated.”
“It is,” Qi Ran rubbed Gu Han’s belly. “Then hubby should rest early after finishing work.”
“It’s okay, Ranran. I’m not uncomfortable, just ate too much.” Gu Han lifted Qi Ran so he was sitting fully in his lap. “Ranran, do you dare to sleep by yourself first? I might have to work quite late.”
“Hubby, since being with you, I’ve found that I seem to have developed some separation anxiety,” Qi Ran lost his appetite for the sandwich as soon as he heard Gu Han was leaving. “I miss you so much. When you’re gone for a long time, I get very sad and want to cry. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Before, when we weren’t as close, the dependency wasn’t that obvious. Now, I feel like I can’t control myself. I’m afraid of marriage, yet I’m terrified of you not being by my side. I’m sorry, hubby, I don’t want to be like this.”
“It’s not Ranran’s fault, don’t blame yourself,” Gu Han noticed Qi Ran’s low mood and quickly pulled him into a tight embrace. “I’m not leaving. I will always stay with Ranran, forever. I swear I will always be by Ranran’s side.”
Qi Ran couldn’t suppress the surging pain. His eyes burned and ached. Hot tears slid from the corners of his eyes, leaving tear stains on his soft, snowy cheeks. He huddled in Gu Han’s arms, sobbing quietly: “Don’t go, okay? I’m so sad.”
