The General's Love Glitch - Chapter 18
After speaking, Ruan Wei quickly lowered her head.
Jun Jue was momentarily stunned, carefully pondering the words Ruan Wei had just uttered.
Ruan Wei had told her to kiss her back, had Ruan Wei deliberately stolen a kiss from her this morning?
Jun Jue took a step forward, and a dark green military boot entered Ruan Wei’s line of sight.
Ruan Wei held her breath in nervousness, thinking Jun Jue was about to teach her a lesson, just like every time she had tried to escape in the past, only to be caught and punished upon returning to her cell.
“Don’t hit me.”
Jun Jue had only taken one step when she saw Ruan Wei crouch down, hugging her head, her voice trembling with fear.
Jun Jue looked down at the shivering Ruan Wei, not understanding why she thought she would hit her.
“I won’t hit you,” Jun Jue said.
“…Really?” After a moment, Ruan Wei hesitantly looked up at her.
Jun Jue crouched down in front of her. “Really.”
Ruan Wei still held her head, leaning back slightly, her clear eyes flickering with unease. “Does the General keep her word?”
Jun Jue nodded. “Get up. I will never hit you.”
“Does the General never hit anyone?”
“I only hit enemies.”
Perhaps it was her imagination, but Jun Jue thought she saw Ruan Wei shiver when she said the word “enemies.”
Ruan Wei stood up and quickly retreated to her room.
…
At noon, Uncle Zhang came upstairs to call them down for lunch. Jun Jue noticed that Ruan Wei deliberately avoided walking beside her, instead staying on the other side of Uncle Zhang.
Uncle Zhang, caught between them, was utterly confused.
Ruan Wei was even quieter than she had been in the morning. The only thing that remained unchanged was that she still occasionally glanced at Jun Jue during the meal. Jun Jue didn’t meet her gaze but took note of every little movement.
When Jun Jue set down her chopsticks, Ruan Wei did the same, a grain of rice still clinging to the corner of her mouth as she said, “General, I’m planning to go out and look for a job.”
Jun Jue didn’t stop her, only saying, “First, I’ll take you to the Information Bureau to register your details.”
Ruan Wei knew almost nothing about the Federation and had no choice but to agree, guiltily adding, “I’m sorry for troubling you, General.”
“You didn’t seem to think it was trouble when you insisted on following me before.”
Ruan Wei muttered under her breath, “I could go by myself.”
“Are you sure you can find the way?”
“I could ask for directions…” Ruan Wei said weakly.
“Madam, the Information Bureau is quite far. You should really let the General take you,” Uncle Zhang interjected, unable to stand by any longer.
Ruan Wei looked up at Jun Jue, as if seeking her approval.
“Let’s go,” Jun Jue said, walking ahead. No one saw the faint smile that briefly touched her lips.
Once inside the hovercar, Jun Jue waited for Ruan Wei, seated in the passenger seat, to fasten her seatbelt.
Ruan Wei had no idea why Jun Jue was staring at her and felt uneasy under the scrutiny.
Jun Jue sighed and leaned over, pressing an inconspicuous button on the side of the door near Ruan Wei.
“Remember this for next time.”
Jun Jue’s hair brushed against Ruan Wei’s cheek, sending a jolt through her body, as if tiny electric currents were coursing through her veins. The sensation was uncomfortable, and she barely resisted the urge to wrap her arms around Jun Jue as she leaned in to fasten the seatbelt for her.
Jun Jue returned to her seat and noticed Ruan Wei gripping the soft cushion tightly. Her voice softened. “Are you really that afraid of me?”
Ruan Wei shook her head. “I’m not afraid.” She was afraid she wouldn’t be able to stop herself from doing something disrespectful to Jun Jue again.
Jun Jue turned her head to focus on driving. The hovercar had been parked in the yard for a long time, and she rarely drove it more than twice a month. The military district wasn’t far from home, so she usually ran or walked to work, taking the opportunity to exercise along the way.
The Information Bureau wasn’t far from home either. Uncle Zhang had lied, but Jun Jue didn’t deliberately slow down the hovercar.
Because of the short distance, the hovercar took off and landed in less than a minute. Ruan Wei was greatly surprised and turned to look at her. “General, didn’t Uncle Zhang say the Information Bureau was very far away?”
“Uncle Zhang is getting old. It’s normal for him to misremember things.”
“Then you didn’t really need to accompany me…”
“I was the one who brought you back to the Federation, so I had to come. I’ve been investigating your identity all along. Once we’re there, we can register it directly.”
Hearing this, Ruan Wei stopped hesitating and followed her into the Information Bureau.
The director of the Information Bureau personally came out to greet them, hunching his back and rubbing his hands together. “General, have you come suddenly to register your marriage with your wife?”
“No.”
“I’m bringing Weiwei to register her information.”
“Transferring household registration?”
Jun Jue nodded.
“This way, please.”
Jun Jue noticed that Ruan Wei was deliberately keeping her distance, so she turned her head every now and then to check if Ruan Wei was still following.
The director, sensing something was off, secretly speculated whether the two were having a lovers’ quarrel.
Jun Jue stopped and waited for Ruan Wei to catch up. Instead of turning around immediately, she directly took Ruan Wei’s hand.
Ruan Wei widened her eyes in surprise, but Jun Jue acted as if nothing had happened, holding her hand as they continued forward.
After the initial fluster passed, Ruan Wei squeezed Jun Jue’s hand back and even had the mood to look around.
The director pressed his lips tightly together, feeling as though he had witnessed something earth-shattering, something that would get him silenced if even a word leaked out. So, he clenched his teeth, his two front teeth sticking out, his small round eyes wide open. Ruan Wei thought the director looked like an elderly squirrel.
The registration process was quick. Ruan Wei officially went from being a prisoner on a planet with no records to a Federation citizen.
“General, I have a new identity now!” Once they stepped out of the Information Bureau, Ruan Wei couldn’t hold back her excitement and shared it with her.
Jun Jue’s expression softened involuntarily. Suddenly, Ruan Wei rushed into her arms and hugged her tightly.
Jun Jue raised a hand and patted her back lightly. “Alright, now we need to buy you a neural interface.”
“Neural interface?” Ruan Wei pulled back from the embrace, blinking in confusion.
Jun Jue raised her right hand. “This.”
Ruan Wei, like a curious child, held her hand and examined it for a while. Nearby, another Federation citizen carrying a crying newborn stopped to glance at them a few times while heading to the bureau for household registration.
So, the rumors were true, General Jun Jue really had brought back a wife.
And this wife was even more beautiful than the Chief Executive’s daughter.
“There’s a baby crying,” Ruan Wei said, letting go of Jun Jue’s hand and following the sound. She approached a pair of female spouses holding two children. “Are they twins?” Ruan Wei asked excitedly.
“Fraternal twins, a brother and a sister.”
“Big brother, grow up quickly so you can protect your little sister.”
Ruan Wei gently shook hands with each of the children, and soon, both stopped crying.
After boarding the hovercar, Jun Jue didn’t start it immediately. She noticed Ruan Wei was still gazing out the window, waiting until the family of four had entered the Information Bureau and disappeared from sight before the hovercar finally lifted off.
“Do you like children?” Jun Jue asked.
“Mm!”
…
Jun Jue parked the hovercar in the parking lot of the Cyber City. After getting out, she took Ruan Wei’s hand and led her into the store, unaware of the several glances Ruan Wei stole at their intertwined fingers.
She remembered Ruan Wei was always talking about being close.
On a weekday, Cyber City wasn’t crowded, and most of the staff were idling on their phones.
A new trending topic had just emerged online about Jun Jue and Ruan Wei.
#General Jun Jue and her wife spotted at the Information Bureau, good news on the way?#
#The general’s wife seems to adore children, with the doting general by her side#
Some speculated that the general, silent until now, was about to make a grand announcement, her wife was already pregnant. Countless young hearts shattered, flooding the internet with comments, mostly blessings, though some bitter remarks accused Ruan Wei of being cunning, suggesting she had schemed long and hard to win over the famously formidable and disciplined general.
“What are you looking at?” Ruan Wei walked up to the counter, scanning the dazzling array of cyberdecks. She wanted to ask a staff member to explain the differences between them but noticed all the employees were seated behind their counters, heads bowed as they tapped away on virtual screens projected from their devices.
The clerk she addressed thought it was a coworker speaking and replied without looking up, grinning, “I’m reading about the general and her wife. So sweet, you should check it out too.”
Ruan Wei turned to Jun Jue. “The general and her wife… are they talking about us?”
