- Chapter 28 - A Moment of Danger (Revised) — She is Not Out of the Woods Yet
An uproar erupted in the meeting room. The homeroom teachers of No. 1 High School, already feeling irritable and uneasy due to the bizarre suicide case at nearby No. 12 High School, felt their hearts race. A sense of impending doom washed over them.
“What?!”
The principal, seated on the high platform, bolted upright so abruptly that his chair toppled over behind him.
“Where is she? Take us there, quickly!”
The principal, known for his flashy floral shirts, didn’t waste a second. He grabbed the student who had rushed in and prepared to leave. Halfway there, a middle-aged man with a grim expression ran up from the floor.
“I apologize for the student’s intrusion, colleagues, but please excuse me. I need to handle this first.”
Old Fu bowed apologetically to the audience with a heavy expression. He then gave the principal a brief, apologetic nod before grabbing the student and sprinting out of the meeting room.
“Where is she now? Take me there, fast!”
Just moments ago, he had been counting his blessings because the children in his class were of such good character.
Even those who weren’t as resilient as Fu Qingya, or as cheerful and social as Li Xiaowen, were certainly not the type to have psychological issues or a sudden inclination toward suicide.
But before that thought could even settle, he learned that Xiaowen had attempted to take her own life.
The news was so absurd that he initially thought the two messengers were playing a cruel joke on him. But then, he saw their bloodshot eyes, filled with anxiety, and the dark red stains on the hems of their clothes.
In that instant, he realized the students were telling the truth. Heartache and dread couldn’t begin to describe what he was feeling. His mind felt like mush, and he struggled to keep his composure, simply grabbing the student and running.
He didn’t even wait for the principal who had been standing beside the student. It was only because the principal snapped out of it quickly and chased after him that he wasn’t left behind.
As Old Fu and the principal vanished, the teachers remaining in the room exploded into a heated discussion.
“Li Xiaowen from Class 1? How is that possible? I heard she’s an exceptionally bright girl, pretty, with great grades, and a wonderful family. Her parents adore her, so how could a girl like that suddenly try to kill herself?”
“The kids in my class always say Xiaowen has a great personality and is emotionally stable. There’s no way that child committed suicide.”
“That’s why they call it a ‘bizarre suicide mystery.’ It’s precisely because the victims are all kids who would never normally do this. That’s why the police have it labeled as a cold case and can’t seem to solve it.”
“It’s terrifying. These cases happen without warning, so there’s no way to prevent them. Our school might have to shut down for a break, too, and we’re so close to the college entrance exams!”
“Nothing is more important than a life, Mr. Chen. I think you’ve worked yourself into a daze lately. People are nearly losing their lives for no reason, and you’re still worried about exam scores?”
Mr. Chen sighed.
“You’re right. But these kids have worked hard for three years for this one big exam. If they fail because they had fewer classes than everyone else, I’d feel terrible for them. It all comes back to that damn culprit, who has no conscience.”
“Stop talking about the suicide, the vice-principal’s face is turning black.”
A teacher nudged Mr. Chen, who glanced at the vice-principal glaring at them.
“Don’t worry. She’s not upset because we’re talking about it. She’s upset because the principal ditched her again, leaving her to clean up the mess of this meeting. It’s standard procedure by now.”
Hearing this, the teacher breathed a sigh of relief. He looked up to see the stern vice-principal sighing privately at the principal’s retreating back before picking up the microphone.
“Quiet down, everyone.”
The hundred or so teachers immediately fell silent.
The vice-principal let out a breath and began to calm the crowd, ordering a lockdown on the news and systematically issuing follow-up measures.
The vice-principal of No. 1 High School was incredibly capable. As the principal-in-waiting, she had a talent for handling emergencies and quickly minimized the impact of the incident.
She told the homeroom teachers to stay calm, continue their work as usual, and wait for school instructions. She mentioned she would hire a large number of security guards to maintain order for the time being and would provide a satisfactory answer once the details of the case were confirmed.
With the vice-principal’s guarantee of safety and organized plan, the teachers managed to suppress their inner anxiety and went back to their daily routines as if nothing had happened.
While the vice-principal was diligently cleaning up the mess for the impulsive principal, the principal himself followed Old Fu as they slammed open the door to the infirmary. Right behind them, the shrill wail of an ambulance and the approaching sirens of police cars grew louder.
“Old Fu, you’re finally here!”
Crouched awkwardly in the corner of the infirmary, several tall, sturdy boys from Class 1 were watching Fu Qingya and the school doctor try to save a life. They were so relieved to see him that they were nearly in tears.
The vice-monitor had left them there to help, but they found themselves useless. All they could do was stare nervously at the rescue efforts, barely daring to breathe.
They had never felt time pass so slowly, and they had never missed Old Fu’s nagging as much as they did now.
Fu Qingya looked up and saw the breathless Old Fu and the principal, along with the worried classmates beside them.
“Where is the ambulance?”
Fu Qingya had no interest in small talk and got straight to the point.
The student standing by the door, who had been told by Fu Qingya to keep a sharp eye out for the ambulance, blinked before quickly replying.
“It’s already outside the neighboring building.”
“Go meet them and bring them here immediately.”
Even with the emergency measures to stop the bleeding, Li Xiaowen was still not out of danger. She had to be rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.
“Got it!”
The student sprinted off.
Standing at the door, Old Fu pushed past the crowd of boys to look at the hospital bed. Li Xiaowen was lying with her head lower than her feet to maintain blood flow, while Fu Qingya and the doctor were applying pressure to stop the bleeding.
Old Fu gave Fu Qingya a surprised look before turning to the doctor, whose forehead was beaded with sweat.
The doctor’s expression was incredibly grim, so much so that Old Fu didn’t dare interrupt.
“What exactly happened? Can someone tell me the details? And how is Xiaowen doing now?”
The students who had burst into the meeting only said that Xiaowen had tried to kill herself in the bathroom and was taken to the infirmary. They hadn’t said anything else, and Old Fu needed to know everything as her teacher.
The boys, unable to vent their fear or excitement, surrounded Old Fu and whispered the entire story to him. Then, they looked back at Fu Qingya.
“Fu Qingya and the doctor just managed to stop the bleeding, but we don’t know the exact status yet.”
The boy’s voice was heavy with emotion as he watched the girl, who looked as if she might stop breathing at any second.
“The student is not out of danger yet,” the grim-faced school doctor suddenly cut in. “Is the ambulance here yet?”
