- Chapter 9 - Encountering an Attack, Getting Closer
Xiaoyu saw Wen Yu open his mouth and say two words, which by the shape of his lips meant “Come here.”
There were quite a few people sitting in the courtyard. The ones closest to the bonfire were several townsfolk, including the man she had met during the day.
A few meters away was a table where several children were leaning, laughing happily.
She glanced around but didn’t see Duanmu Ying; she was probably checking on Nan Chenghui.
As Xiaoyu approached, the children looked up at her in unison, several of them showing timid expressions.
The girl who had met her before ran over, nudged her hand, and invited her: “They all want to see you.”
The girl’s eyes were bright, full of anticipation.
Xiaoyu looked up at the children, who were all staring with extremely curious gazes.
She thought for a moment and agreed: “But I need to tell the Taoist Priest first.”
The girl looked in the direction Xiaoyu pointed, realized it was the Immortal Elder who had saved so many people, and nodded repeatedly: “We will wait for Sister to come.”
Having received permission, the girl quickly ran back to tell her friends the good news.
Xiaoyu watched them for a while, feeling quite touched.
Seeing their happy expressions, her own mood also brightened.
She told Wen Yu that she was going to the children’s table, and Wen Yu said nothing.
The townsfolk nearby still looked afraid when they saw her.
“Will she, will she eat people?”
“I heard fox demons first drain a person’s vital essence before eating them!”
“I hope Caiwa and the others will be okay.”
One woman, however, spoke gently: “Xiaocao seems to like her. With the Immortal Elder here, nothing will happen.”
A few townsfolk wanted to retrieve their children, but they dared not move since Wen Yu hadn’t spoken.
Wen Yu watched Xiaoyu quickly assimilate with the children, a look of doubt flashing in his eyes, though his face remained neutral.
No matter how a demon beast disguised itself as a human—even the most highly cultivated Demon King—it would always show flaws.
They would be unable to maintain their human form, or their behavior would be strange and not conform to human norms.
Yet this fox, apart from the exposed fox ears and demonic pupils, was virtually indistinguishable from a human.
What exactly has replaced the original demon?
“It’s nothing. She won’t hurt anyone.”
The fire had died down somewhat, and as it was getting dark, the light dimmed.
Wen Yu checked the time, then looked toward the room where Nan Chenghui was located on the second floor. He was about to leave when the townsfolk enthusiastically pulled him back.
“Immortal Elder, please sit for a while longer. We still need to thank you.”
While Wen Yu was held back and unable to leave, Xiaoyu was fulfilling the children’s request to tell a story.
“As I was saying, quicker than quick, the Great Sage pulled out the Compliant Golden-Hooped Rod from his ear, and with one strike, smashed that demon beast and rescued his Master.”
“Hooray! The demon beast is defeated!”
One child stood on the table and reached out his naughty hands toward Xiaoyu’s fox ears.
“Sister, Caiwa wants to touch your ears!” the girl shouted, pointing at the boy.
Xiaoyu turned around and saw a boy shyly retract his hand, then timidly jump off the table.
The other children saw this and started clamoring: “I want to touch them too!”
Xiaoyu didn’t mind. She was just bending down to let the children touch when she suddenly remembered how sensitive her own ears were to her touch. She immediately straightened up, denying them access.
“That won’t do. Only Sister’s true love is allowed to touch them. None of you can touch them.”
The children begged: “Just let us touch them once.”
Xiaoyu turned and ran: “No! No way!”
She still didn’t know how to shrink her ears back. Seeing Wen Yu, she immediately ran toward him.
It just so happened that Wen Yu stood up at that moment, intending to return to his room.
Xiaoyu caught up to him, stood in front of him, pointed to her fox ears, and asked: “Taoist Priest, can you, can you hide my ears?”
She then hastily covered up: “My demon power is gone, and I can’t put them away.”
After speaking, she waited for a moment without hearing Wen Yu reply. She looked up and saw him staring intently at her, his eyes strange.
With his back to the bonfire, it was difficult to clearly see Wen Yu’s expression.
She could only see his dark eyes, deeper than the night itself.
Xiaoyu felt an inexplicable moment of dread, took a step back, and nearly tripped over the ill-fitting shoes.
“If it… if it doesn’t work, forget it.” Just as the words left her mouth, she heard Wen Yu agree.
“Come closer.”
Wen Yu lowered his eyes, looked at the girl who had taken a step closer, and stared at the randomly twitching ears on her head. He closed his eyes briefly, and when he opened them, the impatience in his eyes was concealed. He raised his hand.
Xiaoyu suddenly felt a chilling sensation rush through her entire body from the base of her ear.
She instinctively reached out to touch it and felt a hand that wasn’t hers—it was cool.
Before she could react, the hand was withdrawn.
“I’ve placed a spell on your ears; anyone with cultivation lower than mine cannot see them,” Wen Yu’s voice was very soft, audible only to Xiaoyu.
Xiaoyu immediately reached up to touch the top of her head—the ears were still there.
“How are they still here?”
Wen Yu frowned slightly, conjured a water mirror, and reflected the girl’s face.
From Xiaoyu’s perspective, the ears were gone from the top of her head.
“They really are invisible!”
Xiaoyu instantly broke into a smile. Her curved eyes were filled with mirth, and her radiant face was so lovely that it was difficult to look away.
Wen Yu truly was a good person.
He was going to distribute his magic treasures to his disciples before he died and sacrifice himself for the common people.
Having read the novel and knowing Wen Yu’s character and ending, Xiaoyu’s understanding of him deepened. Coupled with Wen Yu helping to hide her ears, her tense nerves gradually relaxed.
She tentatively asked: “If I prove that I am a good person—a good demon—will you let me go?”
Wen Yu glanced at her, his eyes deep and profound, concealing a dark undertow: “If you leave, will he not pursue you?”
Xiaoyu blinked, lowered her head, and sighed.
He was right. The Villain would definitely come looking for her. If the Villain found out she hadn’t completed the original body’s mission, he would definitely kill her.
Wen Yu was still better.
As Xiaoyu was thinking, she suddenly looked up, staring intently at Wen Yu.
Her bright, sparkling fox eyes were fixed directly on Wen Yu, and her light-brown demonic pupils lit up.
Wen Yu was such a good person. With Wen Yu’s protection, even if the Villain came looking for her, she wouldn’t die.
Her crystal-bright eyes were full of joy: “Then I won’t—”
Before she could finish her sentence, Xiaoyu felt a strong force pull her away.
She was yanked and slammed against the wall, hearing Duanmu Ying’s anxious voice: “Master, Senior Brother is having an episode!”
Xiaoyu was too pained to move, leaning against the wall for a long time. She caught sight of Wen Yu’s figure disappearing, with Duanmu Ying following him.
When she finally recovered slightly and looked up, she witnessed an extremely terrifying scene.
A demon beast that had broken through the earth where the bonfire was located opened its blood-red eyes. Its enormous horns, nearly half a meter long, had pierced the ground. Dust flew, soil crumbled, and the earth trembled.
A massive shadow was cast upon the ground, covering nearly the entire courtyard.
The bonfire was extinguished, and the surroundings instantly plunged into darkness. Cries of panic and fear erupted everywhere.
The ground had collapsed into a deep pit. The townsfolk who had been smiling moments ago were now buried in the chasm, their lives unknown.
The townsfolk who narrowly escaped death fled in all directions, still remembering to save their children in this urgent situation.
The table was buried under dust. The girl was lying on the edge of the ruins, screaming hysterically: “Mother, Mother—”
Caiwa stood behind her, reaching out to pull her, but was suddenly carried away: “Caiwa, run quickly! Father will take you!”
The demon beast’s four limbs stomped down, crushing the courtyard fence. It roared, its gaze locking onto the person frozen in shock. The girl lay alone on the ground, her terrified eyes reflecting the demon beast’s scarlet eyes.
Xiaoyu watched the sudden scene unfold before her, her body trembling.
Since arriving in this world, this was the first time she had faced human death so directly and brutally.
She suddenly found herself unable to control her body, fixed to the spot.
Just as the horn was about to strike, a red light flashed, and with a clanging sound, it slashed onto the demon beast’s horn, instantly severing it.
The severed section surprisingly crumbled into sand and fell away.
The demon beast roared, lifted its front leg, and fiercely stomped the ground. The stirred-up sand and dust gathered at the broken opening of the horn, and the horn actually reformed.
Its blood-red eyes located the person who attacked it and turned to strike Duanmu Ying.
Duanmu Ying leaped down from the second floor and engaged the demon beast in combat.
She glanced at Xiaoyu, who was shrinking into the corner, and gave her a contemptuous look, then concentrated on restraining the demon beast.
This demon beast was much more powerful than the ones in the previous Demon Territory. Duanmu Ying also had to be careful not to affect the innocent townsfolk, so she gradually began to struggle.
A cunning look flashed across the demon beast’s scarlet eyes. It suddenly turned and rushed toward the girl still lying on the ground. Its horns became its weapon, fiercely sweeping toward the girl.
Xiaoyu’s eyes widened instantly. She wanted to lift her feet to save the girl, but she simply could not control herself to run.
Move! Why won’t you move! You’re a fox demon now! You’re not an ordinary person!
Her heart was screaming and roaring, yet she couldn’t move.
She could only watch helplessly as the demon beast raised its head and swept toward the girl.
A figure suddenly lunged toward the girl, managing to push her several meters, shoving her toward Xiaoyu.
The girl’s eyes widened. Her extremely frightened eyes stared straight at Xiaoyu.
“Save—”
The woman wanted Xiaoyu to save the girl, but her cry was cut short. The horn pierced the woman’s body. Warm blood sprinkled onto the ground. Her pupils dilated, and she could no longer speak.
Xiaoyu’s pupils suddenly contracted into a line. A faint red color spread out from the black center of her eye.
The demon beast tasted the fresh blood, roared, and flung its head. The woman’s corpse was tossed away like a kite with a broken string, disappearing into the darkness.
It charged toward the girl again, its scarlet eyes abnormally excited, clearly about to kill her.
“Damn it!” In Duanmu Ying’s sight, she saw the terrified, helpless girl and Xiaoyu sitting there, doing nothing.
Rage instantly consumed her.
Ignoring her own injury, Duanmu Ying flew directly to the girl’s location, quickly picked her up, but received a solid blow to her back.
She tightly shielded the girl and was slammed against the wall, coughing up blood, only an arm’s length away from Xiaoyu.
The demon beast pursued relentlessly. Duanmu Ying looked at the dazed Xiaoyu, a vicious expression flashing in her eyes.
She quickly stamped the ground to stand up, darted to Xiaoyu’s side, shoved Xiaoyu toward the demon beast with a palm strike, and then turned and ran away with the girl in her arms.
A huge force from behind pushed Xiaoyu toward the demon beast. In her terror, Xiaoyu saw Duanmu Ying’s completely unhesitant action and her retreating back as she abandoned her and ran.
Shadow engulfed her. An immense sense of danger overwhelmed her heart. Xiaoyu’s eyes met the demon beast’s scarlet eyes.
Was she going to die?
