- Chapter 21 - Seeking the Truth – Don't Be Afraid
“No, you didn’t mention it during the day, and now you say you want to go to the main residence of the Demon Domain Lord. Why did you wait so long?”
Lord Fushan glared, grumbling as he sat down.
“I had my concerns at the time,” Wen Yu said calmly, yet this immediately caused Lord Fushan’s expression to sour.
“I asked Rong Niang for help on this matter, and you were still concerned about her identity,” Lord Fushan scoffed. “If I didn’t owe you a favor, I wouldn’t bother with your affairs.”
Wen Yu waited for him to finish, then tossed out a fatal temptation: “When this matter is over, I will help you restore your meridians.”
Lord Fushan’s hands immediately clenched, but a few seconds later, they relaxed.
His expression became somewhat wistful: “It’s been so many years. I’m living quite well now; I don’t need them restored.”
His forced composure was shattered by Wen Yu’s next question: “What about her?”
Lord Fushan knew who the “her” Wen Yu referred to was.
More than two hundred years ago, after defeating the demon army, his meridians were depleted, and he could no longer cultivate. He chose to retire and live a life of leisure.
Later, he met Rong Niang. She was still young then and thought he was just an ordinary person, so she secretly took him to the Sand Demon Domain and raised him.
This raising lasted for over a century.
To evade detection, he used the fur of various demon beasts to conceal his human aura.
For this past century, he had lived a carefree and easy life, but there was always a knot in his heart.
With damaged meridians, he couldn’t cultivate or even use his spiritual energy. If things continued this way, in at most fifty more years, he would begin to age and decline.
Most importantly, he wouldn’t be able to protect Rong Niang.
He couldn’t even help ease her sickness.
Lord Fushan took a deep breath and agreed.
Just as he was about to suggest seeking Rong Niang’s help again, Wen Yu’s words stopped him.
“There is no need to involve her. I have my own method.”
It was only when Xiaoyu was scrutinized from head to toe by Lord Fushan that she realized she had once again fallen into Wen Yu’s trap.
He had promised to take her into the Demon Domain, and now he was asking her to take him into the Demon Domain Lord’s residence. She was clearly being used as a hired hand.
“Among us, you are the only demon, and you have some connection with the Demon Lord.”
Xiaoyu gave a triple denial: “I am not, I do not, don’t talk nonsense.”
That was the original host, not her!
Wen Yu waited for Xiaoyu to finish speaking quietly before opening his mouth again: “The treaty signed between the Demon Clan and the Human Clan has not yet expired, so I cannot directly force my way into the residence. Furthermore, due to the suppression of human cultivators’ strength in the Demon Domain, I can only exert less than half of my strength here.”
Hearing this, Xiaoyu suddenly recalled the book’s ending where Wen Yu died in the Sand Demon Domain.
Was it because his strength was suppressed that he was defeated and killed by the demon beasts?
She hesitated for a moment, then heard Duanmu Ying urge: “Weren’t you formidable just now? You controlled so many devils with one innate ability; now you’re scared?”
Xiaoyu scoffed: “It’s easy for you to talk when you’re just sitting there.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Lord Fushan clicked his tongue in wonder: “I didn’t realize it, but your innate ability as a demon is quite powerful.”
Who wouldn’t be pleased by a compliment? Xiaoyu smiled shyly.
“But what if I’m discovered…”
Wen Yu saw her concern and promised: “I will protect your safety.”
Xiaoyu thought it over carefully and agreed.
The three of them made do for the night at Lord Fushan’s place instead of returning to the inn.
Xiaoyu spent the entire night trying to figure out how to act intimidating enough to deceive the demon beasts.
She thought so hard that she didn’t sleep well all night.
When she suddenly woke up, groggy-eyed, she heard fragmented whispers.
“…have allied with the Demon Clan. Last night, when the Devil Clan attacked, the Demon Clan had no reaction. This morning, the inn has already been restored to its original state.”
“This is tricky. We’re afraid the Demon Domain Lord is also involved.”
Seeing Xiaoyu wake up, both men turned to look at her.
Xiaoyu blinked, and her mind instantly cleared.
“Why are you looking at me?”
Lord Fushan brought up another topic: “Wen Yu, you must thank her properly. Without her, you wouldn’t be able to get in.”
Xiaoyu saw Wen Yu nod in agreement.
“Later, you will pretend to be an envoy of the Demon Lord, falsely claiming to have captured me—a human—to collect a reward from the Demon Domain Lord. Wen Yu will then sneak in with you, and you can escape when you’re done.”
Lord Fushan clapped his hands, settling the plan, and shot a rather proud look at Wen Yu.
Xiaoyu looked at Lord Fushan, then at Wen Yu, and raised a question: “I can actually meet the Demon Domain Lord?”
In the original book’s setting, the strength of the Four Demon Domain Lords was comparable to the peak cultivators of the Human Clan. Could she, alone, avoid exposing herself in front of such a powerful individual?
“Whether you can meet him depends on your ability,” Wen Yu replied.
Xiaoyu looked at Wen Yu in disbelief but saw no hint of doubt in his expression.
“Are you sure this can work?”
Wen Yu nodded: “With you, it can.”
Xiaoyu felt like she had stumbled into a wolf’s den, caught by two divine figures with nowhere to run.
“Don’t be afraid. I will protect you.”
Upon hearing this, Xiaoyu looked at Wen Yu again, her gaze meeting his firm and profound eyes. She suddenly received affirmation under this gaze.
Affirmation that she could help and that her ability was recognized.
She was no longer a negligible demon beast seen as an opposition figure.
She was someone who could fight alongside them.
“Alright then.”
However, upon seeing the tall gate of the Demon Domain Lord’s residence, which was covered with countless Sand Serpent demon beasts, Xiaoyu wanted to back out.
Ah, ah, ah!
What kind of place puts so many snakes at its entrance!
Xiaoyu took a deep breath, tried to ignore the snakes, and mustered the courage to walk forward.
Behind her followed a demon who had revealed his demon ears. His face was ordinary; if one didn’t look closely, he would be completely overlooked.
Before she even got close, Xiaoyu was almost frightened by a sudden Serpent Demon that blocked her path.
“What is your business?”
Xiaoyu remained composed, quickly controlling her expression: “I’ve captured a human and have specifically brought them to dedicate to the Demon Domain Lord.”
The snake’s scarlet eyes blinked, and it flicked its tongue: “What good is a mere human to see the Demon Domain Lord for?”
It spoke, trying to wave Xiaoyu away.
Xiaoyu quickly came up with a clever idea and changed her statement: “What if this person is related to Wen Yu?”
The demon behind Xiaoyu glanced up at Xiaoyu and then lowered his head again.
Upon hearing the name, the Serpent Demon’s eyes shifted, and his tone became flattering: “So, the esteemed master came to the Demon Domain for this great matter. No wonder you were in such a hurry then.”
Xiaoyu heard this, glanced at the Serpent Demon, and remembered being accosted by a Serpent Demon at the entrance to the Demon Domain.
“Oh, it was you.”
The Serpent Demon’s words were filled with a fawning smile, though his serpentine face only showed a string of scales: “Does the esteemed master remember me?”
With Wen Yu present this time, Xiaoyu was less afraid and genuinely adopted the airs of an “esteemed master.”
“Can I see the Demon Domain Lord now?”
The Serpent Demon nodded repeatedly, bowing his body to usher Xiaoyu inside.
It was only when Wen Yu walked past him that he noticed there was another person there.
The sand serpents on the high gate twisted and retreated to both sides. Xiaoyu was horrified to discover that the gate was entirely formed by a pile of sand serpents.
Suppressing her internal discomfort, she followed the Serpent Demon inside.
The vast residence, the size of a town, gradually revealed itself. The further they went, the more human-like the demon beasts inside became, and the fewer their exposed demon features were.
The Serpent Demon led the two to a large hall and asked them to wait while he went to inform the Demon Domain Lord.
Five demon beasts stood on both the left and right sides of the hall.
Seeing their snake tails, which formed their lower half, Xiaoyu closed her eyes to numb her senses.
It was too stimulating; seeing these snake demons so directly lacked the handsome and seductive charm described in tales of the bizarre. It felt only horrifying.
Xiaoyu was both nervous and bored waiting. She glanced around and noticed there was space behind the main hall.
Seeing that the snake demons were all motionless, she quietly tugged on Wen Yu’s sleeve and slipped toward the back.
Just as she was about to get close, she was blocked by the nearest Serpent Demon.
Xiaoyu stopped, not daring to move forward again.
Just as she was about to turn around and leave, she suddenly heard a familiar female voice: “Why hasn’t Father arrived yet?”
“Don’t worry, the Demon Domain Lord might have been delayed by something,” another voice, which sounded aged, rang out.
“I was thinking of helping a friend find someone, so I was a bit anxious,” the female voice sounded again, accompanied by a few coughs.
Xiaoyu remembered; this was Rong Niang, whom she had seen yesterday.
She immediately looked at Wen Yu. Seeing his eyes were calm, she quietly continued to listen.
The demon beast only blocked her from entering but did not drive her away.
“Is the person you’re looking for human?” the aged voice asked.
Xiaoyu listened and thought Rong Niang was kind-hearted; she was still concerned about helping, even though she only asked about it yesterday.
“Yes, she is a human woman.” Rong Niang said, then suddenly delighted: “Auntie, you are also human; perhaps you would recognize that human woman.”
Xiaoyu immediately looked at Wen Yu, pointing her finger toward the inner area.
Wen Yu understood her meaning but shook his head, staying put.
Before they could speak further inside, a wave of coercion rapidly surged from the doorway toward the hall, accompanied by an energetic, authoritative voice.
“Wen Yu, you are truly audacious to trespass into my Demon Domain just like this. Are you not afraid that I will kill you?”
Xiaoyu was restrained by this fierce, overwhelming coercion, and her entire body instantly went limp. However, she was lifted by Wen Yu’s spiritual energy before hitting the ground, and the coercion covering her was wiped away.
Only then did she have the opportunity to look at the approaching demon beast.
His appearance was almost indistinguishable from a human, except for the scarlet snake eyes that were only visible as he approached.
Xiaoyu shivered, retreating slightly.
The Demon Domain Lord made no effort to contain his aggressive aura, silently competing with Wen Yu.
Two formless forces collided in the air, eventually scattering each other and raising a blast of fierce wind.
Xiaoyu quickly tidied her wind-mussed hair, secretly glancing at Wen Yu, seeing that he had restored his original appearance, and his demon ears were concealed.
“Why should I be afraid?”
Xiaoyu heard Wen Yu’s contemptuous tone, seeing this openly hostile side of him for the first time.
As soon as these words were spoken, footsteps immediately sounded from the space behind the hall.
Rong Niang walked out, coming all the way to stand beside the Demon Domain Lord.
Xiaoyu looked up and saw Rong Niang smiling at her.
However, she did not see the person who had been speaking with her.
“Rong Rong?” Upon seeing Rong Niang, the Demon Domain Lord quickly looked askance at Wen Yu and subtly stood in front of Rong Niang, “You go back first.”
Rong Niang saw the stranger beside Xiaoyu and realized that the person who had changed his appearance must be Lord Fushan’s friend, whom she had seen yesterday.
Even though she had never met Wen Yu, she knew of his formidable reputation.
But seeing the tense atmosphere between her father and these two, she did not interrupt, only gently said: “They probably just want to find a human woman. Father, there’s no need to be nervous.”
“Looking for someone?” The Demon Domain Lord’s snake eyes scanned Wen Yu. “Who?”
“The Deputy of Yuehui Sect, named Lian Qiao.”
The person behind the hall heard this and quietly slipped away.
