- Chapter 11 - Separated by Life and Death, Speaking Out
The girl wept silently.
The townsfolk were frequently taken away by demon beasts, but no one dared to run.
They had lived here for years; this was their foundation. How could they possibly leave?
The people in the town were becoming fewer and fewer. The girl knew it was the demon beasts’ doing. She had once asked her mother fearfully if they were going to die.
Her mother hugged her and coaxed her to sleep: “Mother will protect Xiaocao.”
But, Xiaocao doesn’t want Mother to die. Can Mother please come back?
And Daddy.
Xiaocao doesn’t want to be alone.
A gentle touch came from above her head. Xiaocao looked up; the older sister was stroking her head.
“Can you bring my daddy and mommy back?”
Xiaoyu’s hand stiffened, and she withdrew it.
She shook her head, her expression mournful: “I can’t save them.”
These words shattered the girl’s hope. Unable to control herself any longer, she burst into loud, agonizing sobs.
The sound of crying in the room bothered Sheng Li, making his headache worse. He cast an annoyed glance at the girl, then caught sight of the lifeless fox ears drooping on top of Xiaoyu’s head.
So depressed.
He had originally wanted to see what kind of thing had replaced the original fox demon, but seeing Xiaoyu’s dejected appearance, he instantly lost interest.
He turned to leave.
After walking a few steps, he stopped immediately upon hearing Xiaoyu’s words.
“Do you see that Taoist Priest?” Xiaoyu gently comforted the girl: “He is very powerful. In the future, he will eliminate the Demon Lord and save all living beings.”
“When you become powerful, you can also be like him, protecting yourself and the people around you.”
Sheng Li clearly heard the words “Demon Lord” from Xiaoyu’s mouth. After hearing the entire speech, he let out a cold laugh.
His eyes were terrifyingly dark at this moment.
This fox actually had the audacity to arrange his ending for him.
He will be killed by Wen Yu?
What a joke.
He would eliminate the other person within this body sooner or later.
If it weren’t for that damned old demon back then, Wen Yu would not exist in this world at all.
The knuckles of his hand gripping the jade flute were white, and the veins were visible.
Sheng Li suppressed the urge to kill that was itching in his heart and stepped into the darkness of the night.
“What is your name?”
Xiaoyu slowly squatted down, enduring her physical discomfort, and helped wipe the girl’s tears.
“Xuan Cao.” Xiaocao sobbed, her eyes swollen from crying: “Mother said, when she named me, she hoped I could grow up resilient, just like a small weed (xiao cao).”
Xiaoyu was silent for a moment, then suddenly embraced Xiaocao and patted her back.
“Xiaocao is a good name. Wildfire cannot burn it all; it grows again with the spring breeze,” she said. “You must live well, just as your mother hoped.”
Xiaocao cried out again, clinging tightly to Xiaoyu’s clothes, burying her face in her arms, and eventually cried until she passed out.
Xiaoyu felt sorrowful, but couldn’t change anything. She carried Xiaocao to a room to rest and then walked out of the house alone, staring blankly at the now empty courtyard.
The bodies had all been claimed. The silent night felt particularly desolate.
Xiaoyu looked up at the starless night sky, suddenly feeling lost.
It seemed that even the simplest act of living could not be guaranteed.
Duanmu Ying’s intent to kill her was too strong, and following Wen Yu meant unavoidable contact with Duanmu Ying.
But if she didn’t follow Wen Yu, where else could she go?
The Human Race didn’t welcome demon beasts, but she herself didn’t dare go to the Demon Race. The mission the original body carried hadn’t been completed; if caught, she would definitely die.
It seemed the only path left was to stay by Wen Yu’s side.
Sighing heavily, Xiaoyu turned to go back to the room, but was startled to see the person standing behind her.
“Taoist Priest, why are you so quiet?”
Xiaoyu calmed herself. The gloom in her heart was scared away by the fright.
At such close proximity, Sheng Li saw the invisibility spell on Xiaoyu’s fox ears. He raised an eyebrow, suddenly becoming interested.
He recalled Xiaoyu asking Wen Yu to hide her ears, and how she had previously vehemently insisted she was a good demon, sometimes accidentally blurting out that she was human.
Is she so resistant to the demon identity?
He had a guess about the entity occupying this fox demon’s body.
He just needed to verify it.
A sharp pain suddenly shot through the back of his neck. Sheng Li suppressed the instant surge of pain, annoyed, and wanted to create a mess for the person who was about to control this body to deal with.
But meeting the clear demonic pupils of the fox in front of him, another thought suddenly emerged in his mind.
His brow involuntarily furrowed due to the physical pain. Sheng Li suddenly asked: “You hid the ears, why didn’t you hide the eyes?”
Xiaoyu froze, her thoughts following Sheng Li’s: “Eyes? What’s wrong with my eyes?”
A water mirror suddenly appeared before her, and then Xiaoyu clearly saw her eyes in the mirror.
Vertical pupils indistinguishable from a fox’s. As soon as Xiaoyu realized the appearance of her pupils, they contracted into a line, making the light-brown color almost fill her entire eye.
“!”
Xiaoyu subconsciously looked at Wen Yu. She opened her mouth, and still forced herself to ask:
“Then, Taoist Priest, can you also help me hide my eyes?”
She truly didn’t know how to conceal these demon beast features and could only ask Wen Yu for help first.
Sheng Li repeated the word “Taoist Priest” silently in his heart, suddenly feeling bored. He directly transformed Xiaoyu’s eyes into the appearance of human pupils.
Seeing her pupils return to normal in the water mirror, Xiaoyu finally relaxed.
“Why aren’t you saying thank you?”
There was still a moment until he would be replaced. Sheng Li heard the thanks that Xiaoyu only spoke after his reminder.
But she only said one sentence, then lowered her head and fell silent.
Sheng Li looked at Xiaoyu. Suddenly, a wave of irritability surged up, even overcoming the pain in the back of his neck.
Then his head spun for a moment. Realizing that that person was about to control this body, Sheng Li once again entertained the idea of causing trouble for Wen Yu.
He resisted the other person, and the pain in his body intensified with each moment.
A cold palm covered the fox ears on top of Xiaoyu’s head, making her whole body tremble.
Xiaoyu instinctively looked up, meeting the eyes of the person in front of her.
His eyelids drooped listlessly due to the pain. Sheng Li tightened the hand covering Xiaoyu’s ears and simultaneously spoke: “Did you forget what I told you last night?”
Xiaoyu’s eyes widened. The strange sensation radiating from her ears gradually spread throughout her body.
This unsettling feeling made her ignore the completely different evil aura emanating from the person in front of her compared to the cold demeanor she had seen before.
“Wh-what?”
Xiaoyu shifted uncomfortably to the side, avoiding his touch, racking her brain to recall what he had said.
Sheng Li narrowed his eyes and suddenly let out a cold snort.
It was time to remind “her” what the body she occupied was originally supposed to do.
But his body suddenly swayed. Sheng Li only left behind a suggestive sentence: “You think hard about it yourself.”
Then he turned and immediately disappeared into the night.
Only the bewildered Xiaoyu remained, pointing at herself in confusion.
“Me, think about what?”
So strange.
With this distraction, Xiaoyu forgot her sadness and wasn’t sleepy anymore. She sat in the living room in a daze, carefully recalling the original plot of the book.
She had only read half of the book and only knew that Wen Yu and the Villain ultimately died together.
The early stages were mostly about the male and female protagonists leveling up and searching for the aunt outside the sect. This continued until the male protagonist Nan Chenghui’s demon identity was exposed, which Duanmu Ying couldn’t accept, and the two separated for a while.
Afterward, someone revealed that Wen Yu’s second disciple was a demon, and at the same time, the Demon Race suddenly invaded, ravaging the Human Realm.
Several major sects heavily criticized Wen Yu, demanding that he hand over Nan Chenghui and Yan Ziqiong, which also affected the Yuehui Sect where he resided.
By this time, Duanmu Ying had already fallen for Nan Chenghui but was unaware of it.
Her father, Qiu Hong, sought to protect himself by asking her to persuade Wen Yu to hand over the two individuals. Duanmu Ying was caught between her biological father and the man she loved, ultimately choosing inaction: she helped neither her father nor Nan Chenghui.
It was Wen Yu who stepped forward, severing ties with the Yuehui Sect and his master-disciple relationship with Duanmu Ying, and volunteered to eliminate the Demon Lord, sacrificing himself to protect his two disciples.
Not long after, the Demon Race ambushed the Yuehui Sect. Without Wen Yu’s protection, the sect vanished from the Human Realm in just two days. This former leader of the Four Great Sects of the Human Realm was completely gone.
Only Duanmu Ying escaped death, saved by Nan Chenghui.
Xiaoyu remembered the scene of the Yuehui Sect’s destruction very clearly.
At the time, she felt sorry for the heroine’s tragic fate, but after reading the later chapters, she was so angry she wanted to curse.
After being saved by Nan Chenghui, Duanmu Ying recuperated for over half a month, during which Wen Yu visited once.
The moment she saw Wen Yu, she questioned him: “Why didn’t you come to save us the day the Yuehui Sect was attacked by the Demon Race!”
Duanmu Ying shifted all the blame onto Wen Yu, even cursing him to have a terrible death.
Nan Chenghui spoke up for Wen Yu, but Duanmu Ying accused him of being an accomplice.
Driven by anger, she spoke recklessly, cursing Nan Chenghui along with Wen Yu, calling him a demon and saying that demons truly were all bad news.
Xiaoyu was so infuriated that she skipped ahead without reading. When she remembered to look again, she chose a chapter that happened to be the scene of Wen Yu and the Demon Lord fighting to the death.
As soon as she saw that Wen Yu had died, Xiaoyu abandoned the book.
Who knew she would actually transmigrate into it! She should have read every single word and memorized it!
This is truly an undeserved misfortune.
Xiaoyu stomped on the ground a few times to vent her frustration.
After staying downstairs for long enough, she went upstairs to check on Xiaocao.
Just as she reached the doorway, she saw Duanmu Ying coming out of the room. Duanmu Ying didn’t even spare Xiaoyu a glance, holding her head high and walking straight past her.
Xiaoyu was equally annoyed and really wanted to retaliate against Duanmu Ying.
If Wen Yu hadn’t shown up, she would be dead!
She disliked her just from the text description, and now, after close contact, she found her even more detestable.
Xiaoyu stepped inside to check on Xiaocao.
Tear streaks were still on Xiaocao’s face, and her breathing was heavy.
Xiaoyu tucked the corners of the blanket tightly. She had seen some spring crops during the day, so it should be almost summer, but the temperature was low in the mornings and evenings.
Her gaze shifted, catching sight of a circular object inside the bed. Getting closer, she saw the character Yue written on it.
A thought crossed her mind, realizing this was a Sect Token carried by disciples of the Yuehui Sect.
Xiaoyu averted her gaze, but the image of Duanmu Ying rushing over to save Xiaocao again surfaced in her mind.
She gave a small hmph, thinking that Duanmu Ying still had some humanity, knowing to comfort Xiaocao.
Xiaoyu simply lay down by the edge of the bed and waited for daybreak, not going anywhere else.
When the sky was about to brighten, she saw Wen Yu walk in, carrying the dampness of the morning, and he spoke:
“Get up. We are going to the Desert Demon Territory.”
