The First Senior Sister Is Weak and Helpless - Chapter 6
Inside the Chengfeng Pavilion, Mu Yao was sitting in the study on the second floor of the main Chengfeng building, holding a secret manual in her hands.
There were not many other things on Xiaoyao Peak, but the books that Feng Yang had collected from all over the cultivation world over the years were quite numerous, and the book collection in the private study of Feng Yang even surpassed that of the entire Tianqing Sect Scripture Pavilion.
Although Mu Yao could not see, these books could be read through spiritual sense, so it posed no particular difficulty for her.
Perhaps because Mu Yao had suffered from an eye ailment since childhood and was unable to see, the years before she successfully cultivated her spiritual sense were the times when Feng Yang and Mu Yao spent the most time together.
Mu Yao, who had been earnestly comprehending the manual, suddenly heard what sounded like the splashing of water outside.
Releasing her spiritual sense outward, half of the Chengfeng Pavilion was instantly enveloped within Mu Yao’s spiritual sense. The moment her spiritual sense expanded, she caught the sight of a little person dressed in a purple dress falling into the water, though not as clear as what the naked eye could see, it was still visible.
The little one almost choked on water after falling in. Upon seeing this situation, Mu Yao roughly understood what was going on, guessing that the little one had bullied the water spirit again, and the water spirit had purposely refused to rescue her.
She sighed softly. The Junior Sister was exquisitely carved out of jade, and at first glance, she was exceptionally endearing, with a pair of ink-colored eyes that were exceptionally bright and clear.
However, only Mu Yao knew just how mischievous this little creature truly was, as none of the spiritual spirits and spiritual beasts in this entire courtyard had escaped being bullied by her.
Even though she was only a three-year-old child, she had somehow become the little tyrant of the entire Xiaoyao Peak.
Fortunately, these spiritual spirits and spiritual beasts had all watched her grow up to a certain extent, which was why they also showed a bit more indulgence toward this little one.
“Climb up yourself,” Mu Yao said indifferently.
Hearing her Senior Sister’s voice, little Wen Jiu raised her head to look toward the direction of the study, and finally crawled up obediently on her own.
Yet even after coming ashore, the little one’s small mouth turned down, and she once again began to feel somewhat aggrieved.
Mu Yao originally wanted to continue comprehending the contents of the book, but before she could even enter a state of meditation, she heard the crying coming from outside.
Sighing softly once more, “What are you crying for? You bullied the water spirit yourself, and choking on water was also because you fell in yourself. What is there to cry about?”
For some reason, upon hearing her inquiry, the little one immediately felt even more aggrieved, and Mu Yao simply could not fathom what on earth this little one had to feel aggrieved about.
Even so, hearing her cry still gave her somewhat of a headache. Emerging from the study, she then rode the wind and landed right beside little Wen Jiu.
Mu Yao squatted down in front of her, reaching out to remove the dirt and grime from her body, followed by casting a cleansing spell upon her.
“Was it not you who bullied them first?” Mu Yao asked softly.
The little one extended her hands, looking eagerly at Mu Yao. “Senior Sister, hug me.”
The jade-carved little person stretched her hands out toward Mu Yao, while her entire body remained soaking wet.
Even the tips of her hair were still dripping with water. Mu Yao grasped her tiny hands but chose not to pick her up, instead instructing a fire spirit to go boil some hot water.
“Once the hot water is ready in a moment, wash yourself, and come to the study to recite your texts once you are done.” Mu Yao could not feel the warmth of her palms, which should still be quite cold.
Moreover, looking at her thoroughly drenched state, Mu Yao felt quite reluctant to embrace this dirty child.
Upon hearing the mention of reciting texts, little Wen Jiu immediately retracted the hands she had held out for an embrace, placing both hands behind her back while looking at Mu Yao with an aggrieved expression. “Ah Jiu does not want to recite texts.”
“This is the punishment for you bullying the spiritual spirits.” Finishing her words and seeing that the fire spirit had returned, Mu Yao patted Wen Jiu’s small head. “Go on, the hot water is ready.”
“Ah Jiu does not know how to wash her own hair.” The little one tugged on the corner of Mu Yao’s robe and shook it.
Mu Yao remained silent for a long while before transmitting her voice to Yue Yue, asking her to come over and help.
She herself certainly did not know how, as it had always been Yue Yue helping out. Yue Yue did not think too much about it either, as her cultivation was low and she never considered the matter of spiritual sense projection, simply assuming that it must definitely be inconvenient since the First Senior Sister could not see.
Little Wen Jiu stood nearby, her pair of small eyes rolling around while she tilted her head slightly, as if there was something she could not quite figure out.
Clearly, it was always the First Senior Sister who accompanied her every day, so why was it that every time, the First Senior Sister would always have Yue Yue come over instead?
Yet the little one still did not voice the question, merely harboring a bit of curiosity in her heart.
Once Yue Yue arrived, Mu Yao returned once more into the study, sitting at a desk directly opposite Ah Jiu’s small table.
Unlike the tidy state of Mu Yao’s desk, Ah Jiu’s table was covered with all sorts of messy scribbles.
Recalling how much effort it had taken to teach the little one how to speak, Mu Yao remembered that this creature could not even talk when she was two years old, though she had figured out how to walk on her own quite quickly.
Learning to walk naturally was not something Mu Yao taught her, because she simply learned it by running after those spiritual spirits every day.
However, the spiritual spirits would not talk to her, and Mu Yao possessed a gloomy and quiet temperament, so she naturally did not converse much with her either. Usually, as long as Ah Jiu did not bump or bruise herself or get into any other kinds of trouble, Mu Yao would not pay her much mind.
She figured that since there were those spiritual spirits to keep her company and play with her anyway, it was much more interesting than having herself tag along.
Consequently, until Ah Jiu reached the age of two, she could only utter some simple pronunciations she had figured out on her own.
It was only when Nan You came over to play with Ah Jiu and suddenly asked Mu Yao why the Junior Sister still could not speak.
Only then did Mu Yao belatedly go to the Scripture Pavilion to search for and read some books concerning the education of mortal children.
After reading them, she learned that children needed to be taught how to speak.
The most words Mu Yao had ever spoken in her entire life were probably uttered precisely for the sake of teaching her Junior Sister how to use language.
Fortunately, Ah Jiu possessed a high comprehension and exceptional intelligence, because as long as someone taught her, she was capable of learning and did not suffer from any congenital deficiencies.
However, as she grew older, her temperament also became increasingly mischievous, leading her to bully those spiritual beasts all day long at such a tender age.
With her mind solely set on playing, she could never sit still for even a moment when Mu Yao tried to teach her before running off to play with other things, especially loving to play in the mud.
In the end, driven to her wits’ end, Mu Yao had no choice but to talk to her more often and ask her various questions while she played.
For a normal child, Mu Yao’s teaching method probably would not have worked, but little Wen Jiu gradually caught on.
From then on, Mu Yao also began to mind making an effort to converse with her daily. During the age of babbling, she seemed to learn everything rather quickly.
Approaching the age of four, Mu Yao recalled that when she herself was brought back by her Master, she had also been barely five years old, and her Master seemed to have begun teaching her to read and write at around this age.
Thus, recently Mu Yao had begun teaching little Wen Jiu some simple characters.
She had never been in contact with other children, and her other two junior sisters, even when they first arrived at Xiaoyao Peak, were already at an age where they knew how to read and write.
Mu Yao only had her own meager learning experience to rely upon. She took out the character blocks that her Master had specially carved for her when she was young, and every day she would have little Wen Jiu touch and recognize one or two characters.
Yet this little creature was truly disobedient beyond belief, losing her patience every single time before even a quarter of an hour had passed, and instead scribbling everywhere across the tabletop.
She also disliked writing properly on paper, preferring to write on random surfaces instead, and if not for Mu Yao stopping her, she probably would have vandalized the very walls of the study as well.
Mu Yao simply could not understand why her Junior Sister was so fond of making a fuss.
Being a young girl in her early teens herself, she had never seen such a little person before, so she could only grope her way through teaching by feeling.
Thinking that perhaps all children were like this and would grow out of it when they got older, she did not impose too many restrictions upon her.
Yue Yue helped tidy up little Wen Jiu. Over the span of three years, Yue Yue had also grown quite a bit taller. Although she dressed like a little medicine-boy, with her hair braided into two pigtails hanging in front of her chest and a small abacus suspended from her waist, she was still not truly inconspicuous.
Standing among a crowd, she could still be picked out at a glance.
“Has Yue Yue reached the ninth layer of Body Tempering?” Mu Yao asked softly.
“Yes, First Senior Sister. Master said that if I work a little harder, I will soon reach the Condensing Pulse Realm. Once I enter the Condensing Pulse Realm, I will be a true cultivator, and in the future I can follow Master to learn alchemy without having to spend every day boiling medicine and doing odd jobs for Senior Sister Nan You.” Yue Yue’s tone was filled with yearning for her future life, and one could tell she was extremely reluctant to continue doing chores for Nan You.
Yet Mu Yao did not directly shatter her illusions, knowing that even if she could learn alchemy, she would likely still have to do odd jobs for Nan You.
After all, a character like Nan You would never let go of such a useful little helper.
“Keep it up,” Mu Yao said softly, before handing a small alchemy furnace over to Yue Yue. “This item was found inside the storage bag of a long-dead cultivator that we picked up when your Senior Sister and I went out hunting a few days ago. Nan You has no use for it, and I have no use for it either, so take it to practice with.”
Yue Yue had helped Mu Yao quite a bit after all, so Mu Yao naturally showed her some care.
“Thank you, First Senior Sister. You are still the best.” She was so much better than Senior Sister Nan You. Although the First Senior Sister did not like to talk much and sometimes acted indifferent toward people, she was still far better than Senior Sister Nan You who talked so much.
While the two were talking, little Wen Jiu was playing by herself in a corner of the room. When Mu Yao finally shifted her attention back to her, a sharp pain suddenly pierced through her head.
The little creature had accidentally come close to tearing a book.
Yue Yue turned her gaze toward Ah Jiu’s direction and saw the little person dressed in a pink dress sitting in the corner, holding a book in both hands while clutching a small knife she must have fetched from somewhere, attempting to slash at the book.
Fortunately, every book in the study was protected by protective restrictions, and the little one’s knife could not cut through them at all.
Even so, Mu Yao could not help rubbing the space between her eyebrows. She stood up, walked over, and hoisted the little one up by her clothes.
Suddenly lifted into mid-air, Ah Jiu turned her head to look at Mu Yao, dropped the knife and the book from her hands, and instantly reached out toward Mu Yao with an expression of delight. “Senior Sister, hug me.”
With a cold face, Mu Yao remained silent, merely walking toward the corridor of the study and hanging the little one upon the Frost Sword outside.
Watching from the side, Yue Yue could not help swallowing hard, because having been in the sect for so long, this was her first time witnessing the First Senior Sister’s truly cold expression, and although the First Senior Sister was icy cold, she had never darkened her face toward anyone.
The Junior Sister was truly something else.
Stealing a quiet glance at the title of the book that the Junior Sister had vandalized, Yue Yue memorized the book name and later asked her Martial Uncle about it, after which Yue Yue finally understood why the First Senior Sister was so furious.
“That is a sword manual left behind in this world by the Sword Saint, the culmination of the Sword Saint’s lifelong effort, and the only copy in existence. Your Martial Uncle Feng Yang snatched it back from the Demonic Clan all those years ago, and even almost got trapped by the Demon Lord within the Demon Realm. Mu Yao has always treasured it dearly, so tell me, if this isn’t asking for a beating from little Ah Jiu, what is?”
Upon hearing her Martial Uncle’s explanation, Yue Yue finally understood that the Junior Sister’s punishment was well-deserved.
Yet she also thought that the Junior Sister was still young, and the book suffered no actual damage either, meaning the First Senior Sister might have been a bit too harsh.
However, Yue Yue did not know that this was by no means the first time for Ah Jiu, who had even once tried to order a fire spirit to burn books last time.
Though young and unable to speak yet, she was capable of ordering spiritual spirits to create mischief, leaving one unsure whether to praise her for innate talent or condemn her for being born mischievous.
