The Film Queen Is Cold and Ruthless, Only Sends Money - Chapter 11
After waking up, Jiang Zhi went to the company.
She had her own studio but hadn’t completely detached from the company, as she was still an artist and shareholder there.
She also had considerable say in certain company matters.
Meanwhile, Su Yun received a call from her agent.
“The ending theme song you sang for a TV drama before needs to be re-recorded in the studio,” Li Xinyi said over the phone.
The work had been scheduled earlier, but the studio only had availability now.
“Ending theme song?” Su Yun tried hard to recall but couldn’t summon any memory of it. She gave up. “Do I need to go to the company now?”
Li Xinyi replied, “Yes. Do you want me to send someone to pick you up?”
Su Yun declined. “No need to trouble anyone. I’ll drive myself.”
After Aunt Liu had given her the car keys last time, Su Yun had casually tossed them onto the nightstand, where they’d been gathering dust. Today was the perfect opportunity to take the car out.
After confirming the time with her agent, Su Yun headed to the garageonly to be nearly blinded by the dazzling display of wealth.
Once she recovered, she chose a relatively low-key Porsche.
Being low-key was her life’s motto!
The company Su Yun worked for was called Star New Entertainment. It wasn’t a giant in the entertainment industry, but it wasn’t an unknown small agency either.
Several A-list actors and rising stars in the industry had come from Star New Entertainment.
When she arrived at the company and parked underground, Su Yun happened to run into another celebrity.
The star was accompanied by a large entourage, making the garage feel even more cramped.
Since the person was wearing a mask and hat, Su Yun couldn’t recognize who it was, so she headed upstairs first.
However, Zhao Yiqing spotted Su Yun and raised an eyebrow slightly.
She asked her assistant, “Isn’t that Su Yun? She’s changed so much?”
Zhao Yiqing was Star New Entertainment’s top star, having debuted through a talent show before successfully transitioning into acting.
Whether it was singing, dancing, or acting, she had her own distinct style and was quite well-known in the industry.
She knew Su Yun not because of any scandals but because Su Yun would often come to her to ask about Jiang Zhi.
What Jiang Zhi liked to eat, whether filming was tiring, when she’d wrap up shooting.
Zhao Yiqing’s skills were naturally strong, but compared to Jiang Zhi, she was still two awards short.
For a long time, Zhao Yiqing had seen Jiang Zhi as her rival.
Imagine someone constantly coming to you to ask about your rival, who wouldn’t feel exasperated?
She didn’t want to know what Jiang Zhi liked to eat or whether she was tired!
If Zhao Yiqing hadn’t prided herself on being a senior figure for the younger artists in the company, she would’ve long since shipped Su Yun out of Star New Entertainment!
So today, seeing Su Yun not coming over to greet her, Zhao Yiqing didn’t feel slighted instead, she was pleased, as if her child had finally grown up.
Her assistant nodded. “That’s Su Yun. She probably has work at the company.”
Zhao Yiqing took off her sunglasses, watching Su Yun’s figure disappear around the corner with a glint of interest in her eyes. “She’s changed quite a bit.”
Her outfit and overall aura were completely different from her usual style.
Moreover, as someone who kept up with all the latest gossip, Zhao Yiqing had been lurking behind every one of Jiang Zhi’s trending topics.
“I also really liked what she posted on Weibo. It was so satisfying to read.”
See? Now that she’d distanced herself from that cold and indifferent Jiang Zhi, the future flower of their company was blossoming beautifully!
Her assistant immediately understood what Zhao Yiqing was thinking and sighed helplessly, urging her to go upstairs first. “You should spend less time surfing the internet. Besides, this is someone else’s family matter.”
Zhao Yiqing huffed. “Don’t tell me you haven’t read ‘Su Yun’s Quotations.’ How dare you lecture me?”
The assistant was speechless.
But the assistant had indeed read them.
The assistant was also a little curious about how many zeros were in Su Yun’s bank account.
–
Meanwhile, a certain Ms. Su, who remained unaware that her mere face-blindness had sparked rumors of a relationship crisis, was now sitting in her agent’s office, looking utterly defeated.
Before recording, Su Yun listened to the original singer’s version.
For several minutes after it finished, she couldn’t recover from the shock.
She took off her headphones and asked, “Did I really sing this? And it was supposed to be the ending theme for a TV drama?”
The original singer’s performance had been sloppy, poor breath control, off-key transitions, and even mispronounced lyrics in the chorus.
No wonder they needed to re-record it today.
Li Xinyi nodded. “Do you need me to arrange a vocal coach for you to practice beforehand? Or should I get a tuning engineer?”
At the mention of a tuning engineer, Su Yun immediately thought of her past job.
One salary, three jobs, she had to handle tuning, mixing, and pitch correction, constantly cleaning up after singers’ mistakes.
And now, someone else would have to clean up after her?
Su Yun shook her head so fast it could’ve rivaled a spinning top. “No, no, I’ll practice on my own first.”
If she actually sent this recording to a tuning engineer, she’d have to sleep with one eye open just in case the engineer came to assassinate her in the middle of the night.
Because she had genuinely been there before and had, at times, contemplated murdering certain unreasonable bosses!
Though Li Xinyi remained skeptical, she agreed readily. “Alright. The production team has given us plenty of time. You can try as much as you want, it can’t get worse than this.”
If there was no improvement in the end, she could always hire a tuning engineer.
Su Yun: “…………”
Even though she had been a pitiful tuning engineer earning a meager salary, her professional skills were still solid!
Once in the recording studio, Su Yun took off her jacket and sat casually on a high stool, holding the microphone with ease.
As she hummed softly, the confidence she exuded made her seem like a true professional singer.
Zhao Yiqing, having just finished a business meeting, wanted to check if the company’s upcoming girl group needed any help.
But when she reached the sixteenth floor, she spotted Su Yun in the recording studio.
Beautiful perfect for the camera. That was Zhao Yiqing’s first thought.
Of course, Zhao Yiqing knew this impression was solely because the soundproof studio spared her from Su Yun’s unique vocal stylings.
After all, the previous times Su Yun had sung, the reviews could be summarized in three words: “painfully bad,” or two words: “just bad.”
To protect her fragile eardrums, Zhao Yiqing refrained from entering the studio and waited outside instead.
Thus, when Su Yun happily opened the studio door, ready to clock out and go home for dinner, she was met with Zhao Yiqing’s presence.
In the parking lot, she hadn’t recognized Zhao Yiqing because of the mask, sunglasses, and hat.
But now, she quickly realized who it was after all, the entire hallway was plastered with the woman’s posters.
Zhao Yiqing had a good reputation, and most people in the company affectionately called her “Senior Sister.” Su Yun was no exception. “Senior Sister Zhao.”
After greeting her, Su Yun didn’t say much else, waiting for Zhao Yiqing to speak first.
And she didn’t ask about Jiang Zhi!
The little person in Zhao Yiqing’s heart cheered and even did a backflip.
If she had known that Su Yun and Jiang Zhi had shared a bed just the night before, that little person might’ve landed headfirst.
But alas, Zhao Yiqing remained blissfully unaware, and the little person stuck the landing perfectly, striking a victorious pose.
In her eyes, Su Yun was now utterly endearing. “Were you just practicing singing? If you have any questions, you can come to me.”
Though Su Yun didn’t understand the sudden maternal aura radiating from Zhao Yiqing, she still thanked her sincerely. “Thank you, Senior Sister. If I run into any problems, I might have to trouble you then.”
“No need to thank me!” Zhao Yiqing waved her hand, then hesitated before finally asking, “So, are you planning to update ‘Su Yun’s Quotations’?”
Back in the day, she had joined the entertainment industry partly for the gossip.
Now that the person she was most interested in was right in front of her, how could Zhao Yiqing resist?
Su Yun didn’t respond, but her eyes were filled with disbelief: Are you serious?
How does the entire world know about this?
Zhao Yiqing smiled sheepishly, completely devoid of her usual red-carpet elegance. “What can I say? Without your savage clapbacks, my meals just don’t taste as good.”
Su Yun: “So now I’m just seasoning for your food?”
Zhao Yiqing unilaterally decided their conversation had gone well. Before parting, she finally voiced the words she’d been holding back.
Su Yun also straightened up. “Go ahead. I’ll take it to heart.”
Encouraged, Zhao Yiqing said, “If you ever feel unhappy on a variety show, you can always talk to me. Jiang Zhi might be a slightly better actress than me, but her temper definitely isn’t as good as mine.”
Just then, Zhao Yiqing’s assistant rushed over and caught the tail end of that sentence.
After confirming no one else was around, the assistant sighed in relief.
Internally, she thought she might’ve found the reason Zhao Yiqing was two awards behind Jiang Zhi.
She was missing something.
Zhao Yiqing’s sharp gaze snapped to her. “Missing what?”
Su Yun also forgot to refute Zhao Yiqing and tilted her head curiously.
The assistant’s heart skipped a beat, had she said that out loud?
Under the weight of their intense stares, the assistant closed her eyes and confessed the truth. “A brain.”
–
After witnessing Zhao Yiqing and her assistant’s “heartwarming” exchange, Su Yun had laughed her fill and drove her Porsche home in high spirits.
Before leaving, she hadn’t forgotten to defend Jiang Zhi’s honor, the Goddess of Generosity definitely had the best temper.
This earned her another look of exasperation from Zhao Yiqing.
Back home, she continued “cultivating sleeping habits” with Jiang Zhi.
A few days later, it was finally time for the premiere of the variety show Dearest Them.
[Dearest Them Production Team: The show will begin at 9 AM sharp. It will be streamed live across all platforms. Stay tuned!]
