The Female Supporting Character in a Melo-dramatic Novel Switched Roles from Omega to Seme - Chapter 4
“Zaozao, what are you saying?!”
Lu Chizao’s words drew a collective gasp from everyone at the table.
Lin Raoyin and the others wore identical expressions of shock.
Lin Raoyin had planned to discuss this privately with Lu Chizao after dinner, never expecting her to declare she didn’t want to get married.
Unable to wait for a private moment, Lin Raoyin glanced at her parents and cautiously asked, “Zaozao, did I accidentally do something to upset you? Why are you suddenly acting up?”
Lin Raoyin and Lu Chizao had been childhood sweethearts. In Lin Raoyin’s mind, it was a given that they would always be together; the thought of separation had never even been a hypothetical consideration.
Everyone around them shared this assumption, believing there was no reason for them to ever part.
So, Lin Raoyin’s initial reaction was merely confusion. She assumed she could simply ask for the reason and then find a way to smooth things over.
Little did she know, Lu Chizao’s gaze was solemn and resolute as she reiterated, “I’m not acting up. I’m serious. I don’t want to marry you anymore.”
The air froze instantly, and the guests exchanged incredulous glances.
Lin Raoyin stood rooted to the spot.
The servants in wealthy households were as sharp as foxes, adept at reading expressions and sensing shifts in the atmosphere. As soon as the conversation took a sour turn, they swiftly stopped their work, gathered their things, and hurried out of the dining hall, leaving no outsiders present.
The elders wore deep expressions of bewilderment. Among those present, only Lin Tingci, after a fleeting moment of surprise and confusion, quickly regained her usual calm, indifferent composure.
Reacting even faster than her sister, who was too stunned to speak, Lin Tingci asked, “Why?”
Lu Chizao had always been stubborn, once she made up her mind, she never looked back. If not for the special nature of her mission, she might have broken up with Lin Raoyin on the spot.
Having been reborn with her memories intact, Lu Chizao couldn’t explain why her heart had died. She simply offered no explanation at all. “No reason. I suddenly realized I’m better off alone.”
This was already a potent dose of medicine, and both sets of parents erupted in chaos.
Lu Xingyan exclaimed anxiously, “You silly girl! What nonsense are you spouting? Haven’t you always wanted to be with Raoyin since you were little?”
Shen Wenyao grabbed Lu Chizao’s arm, pleading, “Yes, Zaozao, you’ve been together for so many years, you’ve longed for this for so long. Even if something has happened, don’t say such things.”
Lin Hexu’s voice was fierce: “Raoyin must have done something to wrong you. Tell me, and I’ll make things right!”
Qin Yin: “Raoyin, apologize to Zao Zao right now…”
Amid the chaos, Lu Chizao caught a glimpse through the dining room door. A male servant stood outside, his face panicked as he repeatedly peered through the glass, too afraid to enter.
If she remembered correctly, he was the one who had delivered the anonymous letter.
Lu Chizao bitterly mocked herself. Thank goodness I announced the engagement cancellation first. Now I can deceive myself into believing I abandoned them all in this life, rather than being the one discarded.
Faced with everyone’s questioning and Lin Raoyin’s pained gaze, Lu Chizao suppressed her guilt.
Lin Raoyin frantically searched her memory, tracing back from today to every date and conversation over the past two weeks.
The company had been so busy lately that they hadn’t seen each other formally for over half a month. Yet they exchanged countless messages and phone calls daily. She couldn’t for the life of her pinpoint anything she had done wrong.
Having been together for years, Lin Raoyin knew Lu Chizao better than anyone. She was observant, and even when Lu Chizao stubbornly refused to admit the truth during their petty squabbles, she could always sense it.
There was genuinely nothing wrong between them.
Just last night, during their video call before bed, Lu Chizao had been cheerful and carefree.
Lin Raoyin was completely baffled. She suggested, “Zaozao, let’s go outside and talk?”
This would also help alleviate Lu Chizao’s lingering unease about the anonymous letter.
Lu Chizao nodded, grabbed her bag, pushed back her chair, and followed Lin Raoyin through the dining room’s side door into the garden.
The sky was already as dark as ink, the garden lights illuminating the irregular bluestone path.
Under the moonlight, standing before a vine-covered trellis, Lin Raoyin remorsefully took Lu Chizao’s hand, her voice incredibly gentle. “Zaozao, what have I done wrong? Tell me, and I’ll definitely change, okay?”
The System’s avatar popped up, perched on a neatly trimmed bush, its mechanical voice utterly emotionless: 【Host, please identify the female lead’s shortcomings in romantic relationships.】
Lu Chizao had agreed to help the female lead grow, but she had her own temperament. Deep down, she didn’t want to cultivate a wife for someone else.
Besides, the current mission didn’t include this task.
Jerking her hand away from Lin Raoyin, Lu Chizao said with a stern expression, “How can you change? Can you become blind to everyone else, like I am to you, with only me in your heart and eyes?”
The True Young Lady’s whereabouts would soon be discovered. In their previous life, no matter how earnestly Lin Raoyin swore otherwise, her character made it impossible for her to abandon Lu Wanqing.
Lu Chizao had always been demanding. If she gave her whole heart, she expected the same in return. Otherwise, she wanted nothing at all.
She believed in one simple truth: someone who truly loves you wouldn’t leave room for anyone else.
But Lin Raoyin was the female lead, destined to embody selfless love, and incapable of ignoring the other protagonist.
Though she hated to admit it, they could never love each other again.
Lin Raoyin’s hand went empty, and her mind followed suit.
Lu Chizao was willful, but she had always prioritized Lin Raoyin’s feelings. She had never spoken to her so harshly, let alone cruelly yanked her hand away.
Hearing those words, Lin Raoyin instinctively blamed herself. She had been too preoccupied with work today and hadn’t been able to pick up Lu Chizao on this important day.
She apologized reflexively, “I’m sorry, Zaozao. I was thoughtless about your feelings.”
Knowing exactly how to appease Lu Chizao, she softened her tone and begged for forgiveness, opening her arms for a hug. “Starting tomorrow, no matter how busy I am, I’ll make time to be with you every day. We can go shopping, see movies, buy clothes—whatever you want. We can even start planning the wedding properly. Oh, and the wedding and honeymoon? They’re all yours to decide, okay?”
If only this tenderness were unique to me.
What a pity.
Lin Raoyin lingered in the warm embrace, but the moment it ended, a crushing sense of loss washed over her, chilling her to the bone.
“It’s no use, Lin Raoyin. I won’t give you another chance to hurt me.”
Lu Chizao removed the arms encircling her, her eyes now cold and resolute, as if seeing through Lin Raoyin’s past and present lives.
She pushed aside the past, not even glancing back.
Lu Chizao left her.
In contrast, for Lin Raoyin, this was just a minor misunderstanding. Why was she making such a big deal out of it? Working hard, studying diligently, and socializing were all for a better life, after all.
Without hesitation, Lin Raoyin decided to chase after her.
“Zaozao, calm down! Let’s talk this through properly.”
“I don’t want to talk to you right now!”
Having been reborn less than half a day ago, Lu Chizao hadn’t had time to rest. She was still carrying the full weight of her emotions from her previous life, moments before her death, and hadn’t yet adjusted.
Her mind was in turmoil, her energy completely drained. She couldn’t tell if her actions were justified; all she knew was that she desperately wanted to escape Lin Raoyin’s presence.
******
A gloomy atmosphere hung heavy in the dining room, refusing to dissipate.
What should have been a joyous evening had turned into one filled with worry.
Lin Tingci had been sitting motionless for some time, her right hand pressed against her cheek.
Outside, there was no sign of anyone returning, and time ticked by relentlessly.
Finally, unable to wait any longer, Lin Tingci glanced at her watch and broke the silence. “The university has a curfew. I need to get back.”
Her university was located in a city over a hundred kilometers away, and she wouldn’t make it if she left any later.
She didn’t know how things were progressing with Lin Raoyin. Lin Hexu had told Lin Tingci to go home first, while Qin Yin reminded her to drive carefully.
For Lin Tingci, this had been just a quick trip home for dinner. She hadn’t brought much with her, so she slung her backpack over her shoulder, stepped out the door, and left.
As she walked through the garden, she could glimpse the figures confronting each other through the shadows of the vines, but she neither wanted to watch nor listen. She headed straight for the main gate.
Lu Chizao was already exhausted from dealing with the situation. In a fleeting moment, she spotted Lin Tingci’s departing figure and realized it was time for her to return to school.
It was a desperate act, like a drowning person clutching at a straw. Anything was better than nothing. Lu Chizao had already parted ways with Lin Raoyin and was hurrying down the bluestone path when she snatched the car keys from Lin Tingci’s hand and strode ahead.
“Heading back to school? I’ll drive you.”
“?”
Lin Tingci tried to take back the keys. “I don’t need a ride.”
Lu Chizao glared at her. “Yes, you do! It’s too far to go alone.”
This was utterly unreasonable. Lin Tingci was a fully grown Alpha, standing 174 cm tall and physically fit from carrying equipment. Was it appropriate for a delicate Omega to make such demands?
Lin Raoyin, who had caught up, overheard the absurd request and looked even more distressed than before. “The driver can take Tingci home, Zaozao. You don’t have to…”
But Lu Chizao reacted fiercely, cutting her off with a shout: “I want to drive her! What’s wrong with that?!”
Lu Chizao’s inner turmoil raged. She felt Lin Tingci’s long legs were wasted on such slow walking. Truly furious, she grabbed Lin Tingci’s arm and dragged her away.
Logically, an Alpha’s greater strength should make it nearly impossible for an Omega to move them against their will. Lin Tingci hesitated, taking a step forward, then pausing.
Lin Raoyin finally said, “Tingci, you should go home. Don’t get involved in her nonsense.”
Suddenly, Lin Tingci cast an inscrutable glance at Lin Raoyin, paused briefly, then looked away indifferently.
Whatever she was thinking, she relaxed her resistance, allowing Lu Chizao to drag her away.
Lu Chizao, too preoccupied to notice anything amiss, finally dragged Lin Tingci out of the Lin family’s gate to a waiting SUV. She unlocked the door, pushed Lin Tingci into the passenger seat, and hurried around the hood to the driver’s side.
She was serious. The moment she got in, she locked the doors.
Lin Raoyin yanked at the door handle, pounded on the window, and shouted Lu Chizao’s name in a frenzy, then turned to Lin Tingci.
The two inside remained unmoved.
Lin Tingci even buckled her seatbelt, making it easier for Lu Chizao to drive.
And so, Lin Raoyin watched helplessly as her girlfriend and sister sped away.
