- Chapter 28 - Xiaxia, I'm Very Happy
The group cautiously followed Song Ziyan forward when suddenly Deputy General Zhao stammered in a trembling voice, “Young General, it seems we might be surrounded.”
Song Ziyan frowned as he surveyed the surrounding wolves, instinctively shielding Wen Yuan behind him. In a steady voice, he said, “Logically, after the lead wolf was killed by A by the Regent King, the pack shouldn’t have regrouped so quickly. Unless there’s something else here attracting them!”
Scanning the area, Song Ziyan abruptly spotted a pure white deer hiding not far behind them.
Lu Zhao and Wen Yuan also noticed the deer. They exchanged a silent glance. Why was the auspicious sign Wen Yuan had previously found now in the back mountains of the General’s Estate? After Wen Yuan leaked the news, he had assumed the Crown Prince or Prince Qing would present it to the Emperor. Why had the General’s Estate also competed for this deer? What was Song Qin’s motive?
Wen Yuan’s expression instantly turned cold as he silently assessed the young man from behind. Who exactly was he? What was the General’s Estate planning?
Unaware, Song Ziyan remained focused on observing their surroundings, searching for the alpha wolf’s position.
The encircling wolves waited silently, tails held high and motionless, as if testing their patience.
Suddenly, the white deer bolted forward. Deputy General Zhao grew anxious, remembering the General’s specific instruction before they entered: seize this opportunity to bring the white deer out, and absolutely must not let the wolves ruin the General’s plan!
Deputy General Zhao shouted, “Catch that deer! It’s an auspicious sign! We mustn’t let the wolves harm it!”
Chaos erupted as the wolves began to move, their throats emitting low growls that sounded abrupt and frightening in the pitch-black night.
Lu Zhao gently set Yunxia down on the ground, kissed her forehead softly, and whispered, “Don’t be afraid!”
Yunxia lowered her eyes guiltily, saying sadly, “It’s all because of me”
The arms around her waist tightened abruptly. Lu Zhao’s gaze deepened as he rested his chin on her smooth forehead. “Shh. Xiaxia, don’t say that.”
He rubbed her damp temples, his thumb pressing against her reddened eye corners, and chuckled lightly, “Someone wants us to get out of here, with that deer. Be good and wait for me here!”
The rain continued to fall in a fine, dense drizzle, pelting their faces and bodies. The faint torchlight struggled to persist, and the silent forest loomed like a beast ready to devour, its maw gaping wide, waiting to be explored.
Wiping the rain from his face, Lu Zhao whispered to Xi Gui, “Later, keep an eye on Miss Xu. Don’t worry about anything else.”
Xi Gui opened her mouth as if to say something, but seeing Lu Zhao’s resolute attitude, she could only frown and nod.
After giving his orders, Lu Zhao set off after the white deer. She bent down to pick up strands of vines, wrapping them around her hands, and pursued with a grave expression into the depths of the forest.
Nearby, Wen Yuan watched as Lu Zhao recklessly joined the others in chasing the deer, his anxiety mounting. Why chase the deer now? If the auspicious sign was lost, they could always find another, but if they perished in these woods, everything would be over!
Frustrated by Lu Zhao’s stubbornness, Wen Yuan had no choice but to focus on locating the wolf king to drive the pack back first!
Squinting, he searched for high ground in the dense forest and rushed toward it without hesitation the wolf king was surely there.
Seeing the people below begin to move, the pack of wolves finally launched their attack. In the darkness, only the roars of beasts and the sound of weapons piercing flesh could be heard.
Wen Yuan pressed forward relentlessly, charging recklessly to fight the wolf king. He reveled in every action that could cost him his life. If he truly died, he wouldn’t have to endure this lonely existence anymore he could finally reunite with the person he longed for day and night.
The wolf king’s sharp claws slashed across Wen Yuan’s face, and as its gaping maw was about to clamp down, he closed his eyes in resignation.
In an instant, a row of silver needles flashed, and the wolf king collapsed with wide, disbelieving eyes.
Song Ziyan watched the scene with a cold expression, his eyes simmering with concealed anger. Without a word, he delivered a final blow to the wolf king’s neck.
Standing over the suicidal Gao Wen Yuan in the darkness, his lips curled into a mocking sneer. “Your Highness, Prince Rui, if you truly wish to die, a simple rope would suffice. Why go to such lengths to degrade yourself?”
Wen Yuan opened his eyes in astonishment, a trace of embarrassment flashing across his face. He had genuinely wanted the wolf king to kill him, never expecting this young man to be so perceptive as to uncover his intentions.
In the blink of an eye, Gao Wen Yuan reverted to his usual frivolous self. He casually brushed the mud off his clothes and touched his cheek, hissing in pain. “That hurts! If my face gets scarred, how many young maidens in Yindu will be heartbroken!”
Song Ziyan felt a sharp pang in his heart, his body tensing and his lips pressing into a thin line. He despised this flirtatious side of Gao Wen Yuan! What did the young maidens of Yindu have to do with him?
In an instant, jealousy and longing flooded his heart uncontrollably.
Song Ziyan leaned forward, seizing Gao Wen Yuan’s restless hands, and straddled his waist. His breathing grew rapid and heated, his eyes burning with unrestrained passion and madness. Lowering his head, he fiercely sought those moist lips, biting and devouring them.
Hidden in the darkness, Gao Wen Yuan stared wide-eyed in shock, his throat moving as their tongues intertwined and his heartbeat quickened. The cold drizzle fell on them, yet his body grew strangely warm, primal desires awakening instantly.
After a moment of stunned silence, Gao Wen Yuan cursed under his breath, “Damn it!”
He flipped over, pinning Song Ziyan beneath him, his legs pressing against Song Ziyan’s thighs. In a hoarse voice, he demanded, “Tell me! Who are you?” His hand slowly reached for the mask, the cold touch sending a shiver of fear through him. His heart raced wildly could this be the person he had been yearning for day and night?
Tears slowly trickled from the corners of Song Ziyan’s eyes. He struck Gao Wen Yuan’s shoulder with his palm, scrambled to his feet, and ran off without looking back.
After the wolf king was killed, the pack dared not approach and gradually dispersed.
Song Ziyan led the way in silence, never once glancing back at Gao Wen Yuan. He could feel a probing gaze fixed on him all along tonight, he shouldn’t have acted so impulsively.
Xi Gui helped Yunxia as they slowly made their way out of the forest with the others, though Lu Zhao had yet to emerge.
Yunxia’s face began to flush unnaturally, her eyes filled with anxiety. Even after exiting the forest, she refused to leave.
Xi Gui looked at her trembling, unsteady form and felt a pang of pity. “Miss, everyone else has already returned. Let me escort you to the Regent’s residence first and have a physician examine you, alright? Our mistress has had a photographic memory since childhood this forest means nothing to her.”
Yunxia shook her head firmly, her gaze fixed unwaveringly on the direction of the forest, a deep unease hidden in her eyes. She couldn’t leave Azhao hadn’t emerged yet.
After what felt like an eternity, a tall, slender figure emerged from the darkness, followed by a snow-white deer, as if an immortal had descended to the mortal world.
Tears welled up in Yunxia’s eyes. Ignoring the pain in her body, she rushed toward Lu Zhao, her voice choked with sobs as she spoke, “Sister! Sister! I was so scared! I was afraid I’d never see you again!”
Without a care for Xi Gui standing behind her, Yunxia weakly lifted her arms and wrapped them around Lu Zhao’s neck, rising on her tiptoes to gently press a kiss to her crimson lips.
A tingling sensation coursed through Lu Zhao’s entire body. She wrapped an arm around Yunxia’s slender waist, pulling her closer while carefully avoiding her injured shoulder. She allowed Yunxia to continue seeking comfort, the rain mingling with their tears as it trickled into their mouths.
Lu Zhao gently rubbed her forehead against Yunxia’s, then swept her up into a bridal carry, striding forward. “Xiaxia, I’m glad.”
I’m glad you were so worried about me. I’m glad I’m in your heart.
Blushing furiously, Yunxia simply wrapped her arms around Lu Zhao’s neck and nestled softly against her chest.
As Lu Zhao passed Xi Gui, she handed him the vine she was holding and said calmly, “Give this to General Song. This auspicious sign was discovered at the general’s residence.”
