Their bodies pressed tightly together, Lu Zhao’s eyes darkened slightly as she gripped Yunxia’s hand fiercely, refusing to let go. Her voice was hoarse and cold as she spoke: “What? Changing targets now? Taken a fancy to the new top scholar?”
Yunxia’s eyes reddened instantly at her words. When she looked up, she found no warmth in Lu Zhao’s gaze, only a chilling unfamiliarity. This was not the gentle sister she knew. It felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over her. She had yearned for Lu Zhao so deeply, and now, after finally reuniting, this was the outcome.
Seeing Yunxia remain silent with red-rimmed eyes, Lu Zhao’s heart twisted with bitterness, convinced that Yunxia had indeed shifted her affections and could not even feign courtesy toward her.
Lu Zhao lowered her head, seeking Yunxia’s lips. Her kiss was fiercely possessive, a stark contrast to her usual aloof demeanor, carrying an undeniable madness as if she wanted to devour her whole. The mere thought of Yunxia tearing up for someone else made Lu Zhao’s heart ache unbearably she only wanted Yunxia to belong to her. “I’m far better than that Pei Shu”
Tears welled in Yunxia’s beautiful, fox-like eyes. Surrounded by Lu Zhao’s scent, she stubbornly turned her face away, biting her lip as she retorted coldly, “How could I dare hope for the favor of the Regent? Staying by the new top scholar’s side has its benefits too!”
Ignoring her words, Lu Zhao pressed closer, her dark eyes fixed intently on Yunxia as she enunciated each word slowly, “Xu! Yun! Xia! Say that again, I dare you!”
Yunxia immediately clung to Lu Zhao in fright, her hands gripping Lu Zhao’s shoulders tightly. Unable to break free, she spoke defiantly, “I’ll say it again! Who I stay with is none of the Regent’s concern! With your status, you could have anyone, why would you care about someone as insignificant as me?”
Only then did Lu Zhao notice the alarming flush on Yunxia’s face. Her warm fingers brushed over the redness, her eyes darkening with anger. “Who did this?”
Yunxia lowered her gaze, well aware of Lu Zhao’s weakness. She furrowed her brows slightly, letting her eyes quickly mist over as she pitifully whined, “Without my sister, anyone can bully Xiaxia. Now, sister, you’re just like them bullying me, accusing me, looking down on me!”
Lu Zhao’s dark eyes remained fixed on her for a long moment. Gripping Yunxia’s chin, she gritted her teeth and spoke with deliberate force, “I’ll stand up for you! But on one condition you must not get close to that Pei Shu again! If you dare, I’ll have him exiled to the northern frontier.”
Yunxia’s eyes widened in shock, tears finally spilling over as she beat Lu Zhao’s back and sobbed, “you brute! He’s my cousin! My brother-in-law! If you do that to him, I’ll She struggled, trying to break free.
Lu Zhao tightened her hold, firmly encircling Yunxia in her arms. Gazing down at her, she sighed softly, “Xiaxia, don’t move. Do you know? When I found out even your name was fake, can you imagine how furious I was? The moment that woman ran toward me, I knew it wasn’t you. I was going mad, not being able to find you”
“I’ve imagined countless times how I would treat you when we met again, applying all the political tactics I’ve learned at court onto you. But that day when I saw you lying there lifeless, my heart softened. I thought, I’m done for I can’t bear to hurt you.”
“That night, I stood in your room for a long time. I thought, even if you don’t love me, I must keep you firmly by my side.”
Yunxia wrapped her arms around Lu Zhao’s neck, looking up into her glistening, profound eyes. Her nose tingled with emotion, and tears streamed uncontrollably from the corners of her eyes. So it wasn’t a dream that night it really was her.
This fool. How could she not love someone so wonderful? Yunxia carefully reached out and encircled Lu Zhao’s waist, nestling obediently in her embrace. Blushing, she whispered, “Sister, this time Xiaxia isn’t lying to you. Xiaxia’s heart belongs to you too.”
Everything around them fell silent. The breeze gently brushed Yunxia’s face, her mind went blank, and all she could hear was the pounding of her own heartbeat.
Lu Zhao lowered her head and tenderly, reverently kissed away the tears on her face, then kissed her eyes, her delicate nose bridge, and finally lingered on her rosy lips. Softly, she said, “You should go back first. My mother has come today she wants to meet you. If she calls you to her side, don’t be afraid. I’ll handle everything.”
Yunxia felt a flutter of nervousness. “Why would the Princess Royal want to see me?”
A glimmer sparkled in Lu Zhao’s eyes as she gently pinched Yunxia’s small nose, teasing, “What do you think? As a mother, she naturally wants to meet the person her daughter will spend the rest of her life with.”
Yunxia’s jaw dropped in astonishment, her heart racing wildly. Overwhelming joy instantly flooded her, making her feel as if she were in a dream. The one she had longed for all along cared for her so deeply. Yunxia couldn’t help but think Lu Zhao wasn’t like her father, and she wasn’t like her mother. Perhaps she should be brave. Maybe her story would have a different ending.
