The Female Lead of the Abusive Novel Can Hear My Heart's Voice - Chapter 25
At 1 p.m., the hospital was filled only with the sounds of patients going to the restroom. Everyone in the ward had silently agreed to rest quietly during the afternoon nap.
A frantic female voice suddenly broke the silence.
“Doctor, how’s my sister?”
The female doctor in the white coat responded calmly, “Your sister has low blood sugar. She’s fine.”
Xia Chi clearly didn’t believe it. “But she was clutching her chest and said her heart felt really uncomfortable.”
The doctor remained composed and turned around to say, “The test results are back. Your sister has no heart problems. The discomfort was caused by hypoglycemia.”
Xia Mucai got up from the cold hospital chair, pulled Xia Chi’s arm, her lips pale as she spoke, “I’m fine.”
This was not a wound that could be healed by an ordinary hospital it had hurt her soul.
“But you…” Xia Chi looked on, clearly unconvinced. Xia Mucai didn’t look like someone who was “fine.”
“The doctor said I’m okay. Just go home and make me something good to eat.”
Her smile was always healing. Xia Chi finally gave up and let the doctor go.
“Whatever you want to eat when we get home, I’ll make it.”
“Fish,” Xia Mucai replied.
The female doctor glanced at the two of them and left with a slight smile.
Anyone with eyes could tell that the relationship between Xia Mucai and Xia Chi was far from ordinary it was ambiguous and delicate.
But some people were just too blind to see it.
“Xia Chi, why are you here? Just in time. Come with me to do a kidney match test.”
Teng Jingsi strode in, grabbing Xia Chi’s hand. Xia Chi staggered, almost falling over.
The man was rushing, his face full of anxiety.
Xia Mucai closed her eyes, murmuring in her heart, “So soon? The kidney-harvesting plot has already begun.”
She took a deep breath. This had nothing to do with her for now. She stood to the side.
She was still debating whether she should act now and deal with Teng Jingsi to delay the plot a few days, but it turned out she didn’t need to do anything at all.
A loud, clear slap echoed as Xia Chi smacked Teng Jingsi across the face, her voice cold and merciless: “What are you?”
The crisp sound of the slap rang down the hospital corridor, and all other noises ceased. It became so quiet, one could hear breathing.
Teng Jingsi stood there for a long time, stunned, his head still turned to the side.
For some reason, Xia Mucai wanted to say, “Damn, the heroine is so badass.”
That feeling heart-pounding attraction was exactly this.
After a moment, the handsome man’s face twisted in pain. His brows furrowed, his perfectly sculpted model-like face slightly red at the corners of his eyes, earning him some sympathy from nearby onlookers.
He raised his head, holding the slapped side of his face, eyes burning with fury.
“Xia Chi, you hit me?”
“So what? Should I have scheduled it in advance?”
He stepped forward, grabbing Xia Chi’s hand. “You’re just jealous I’m treating Gu Bai’an well. You’re actually jealous!”
“What a nutcase,” Xia Chi cursed inwardly.
She yanked her hand out of his grasp, her brows furrowed in utter disgust.
“Why don’t you go look in a mirror? Who the hell are you? And who am I? You think I’d be jealous over someone like you? Don’t flatter yourself. I’d need to be asleep to even consider it.”
Teng Jingsi: ???
Xia Mucai: ???
No one was more shocked than Xia Mucai. “Was the heroine possessed? How did she suddenly become so fierce?”
Her clenched fists had nowhere to release their tension. She’d wanted to act like the “vicious supporting character” and give the male lead a taste of his own medicine.
Who knew she wouldn’t even get the chance?
“The heroine has grown up. She can finally protect herself. Good job! Don’t let that sleazy man walk all over you!”
Xia Mucai’s eyes were filled with the excitement of having just watched a thrilling boxing match. A spark was burning wildly in her chest.
The man’s face darkened after Xia Chi’s scolding. He brushed his hair away from his forehead, looking gloomy as he said:
“Xia Chi, fine. You won’t get my love anymore. I won’t fall for you. You’ll regret this!”
Xia Mucai couldn’t wait to join this boxing match. She stepped forward, blocking Xia Chi, lifting her chin high like a proud heiress, and snapped:
“Xia Chi is the daughter of the Xia family. She could say one word and have lines of people lining up to love her. She only lost a delusional idiot like you what’s there to regret?”
The sound of her cracking her knuckles echoed, making Teng Jingsi recall the punch he took at the engagement banquet. He shivered instantly.
The man took a step back, completely ignoring what Xia Mucai had said his focus was entirely on her knuckles, now cracking ominously.
“Xia Mucai, what are you trying to do? This isn’t the Xia household. If you hit me, I can sue you!”
That was the funniest joke Xia Mucai had ever heard. A guy who tried to harvest someone’s kidney threatening to sue her?
She scoffed, her eyes full of contempt.
“Are you leaving or not? Don’t let me see you again in this hospital. If you love your white moonlight so much, why don’t you donate your own kidney to her? Why come after Xia Chi? What’s your deal?”
“And suing me? You’re lucky I haven’t called the cops. You shameless joke.”
Teng Jingsi’s face turned green, then red. He pointed at Xia Mucai, then at Xia Chi, “Just wait. You’ll both regret this!”
A woman’s mocking laughter echoed behind him. Never before had he been humiliated like this in front of so many people.
He should’ve been furious but for some reason, his heart was racing.
“Xia Chi must be pretending not to care she definitely likes me.”
Though he’d been slapped, he also felt… something. His face still tingled from Xia Chi’s hand. Not even his parents had ever hit him.
Xia Chi was the first.
He would make her regret what she said.
If Xia Mucai had known what he was thinking, she’d have grabbed his collar and slapped him until he came to his senses.
Xia Chi lowered her head, staring at her clenched fists. She’d heard every word of Xia Mucai’s inner monologue.
“This way, she’ll feel safe, right?”
She turned to look at Xia Mucai, and was met with a radiant smile. She smiled too.
Meanwhile…
Xia Mucai being hospitalized had reached the ears of Father and Mother Xia. The two were in their villa, extremely worried.
The mother’s worry showed clearly on her face, regal like a noblewoman from ancient times. She had long manicured nails, and as her hand clenched, it seemed she might crush the armrest of her chair.
“Why hasn’t Cai Cai come home yet? She’s always been healthy. Ever since Xia Chi came back, she’s been declining. I’m telling you, Xia Chi isn’t even our daughter she’s a fox spirit in disguise.”
Father Xia, sipping tea at the table, wasn’t as visibly anxious, but his furrowed brows suggested a brewing storm.
“My dear, don’t say things like that. We did a DNA test Xia Chi is our daughter. But… maybe I should call a spiritual master. Maybe Xia Chi really is cursed and harming Cai Cai.”
They knew everything that had happened between Xia Chi and Xia Mucai even the legal fight involving Tang Mingming.
All thanks to Mo Qi.
Buzz buzz buzz A call came in.
Father Xia glanced at the screen, frowning. The caller ID read “Mo Qi.”
He slowly answered.
Mo Qi’s voice came through:
“Chairman, the young ladies are returning soon. Miss Xia Chi slapped Teng Jingsi today.”
“Got it,” the man replied coldly. That wasn’t what he cared about. He only cared about Xia Mucai.
“How’s Cai Cai’s health? What did the doctor say?”
Mo Qi replied truthfully: “The doctor said Miss Mucai just had low blood sugar. She’s otherwise fine.”
“Just low blood sugar?” His furrowed brow finally relaxed a little. “Good. I assigned you to her to look after her. Let me know if anything happens.”
“Understood, sir. Please don’t worry.”
What Xia Mucai didn’t know was that Mo Qi, who she treated like her confidante, had always been an informant for her adoptive parents.
She’d trusted Mo Qi fully never hiding anything from her.
Sadly, she had no clue. And Father and Mother Xia had no plans to let her find out.
After the call, Mother Xia slammed the armrest with such force it seemed like it might shatter.
“My Cai Cai eats well, sleeps well how could she have low blood sugar? Is Mo Qi brushing us off?”
“Don’t worry. I know Mo Qi’s character. She wouldn’t lie to us.”
“Then how did Cai Cai get low blood sugar for no reason?”
Tears streamed down her face like she was the one afflicted.
Father Xia didn’t know what to say. After a moment, his eyes lit up as if he’d found a solution.
“Let’s get a master to come and check. If Xia Chi really is harming Cai Cai spiritually…”
His expression turned cold. “If that’s true, make sure Cai Cai stays away from that fox spirit.”
“That woman is a fox spirit! Just look dragging Cai Cai to some dirty orphanage. Who knows what kind of filth she picked up there!”
The rich wife cried like a waterfall, choking out her words:
“We never should’ve had her. She came into our lives before we were ready…”
If they’d known their biological daughter would “corrupt” their beloved adopted daughter, their hatred would’ve been immeasurable ready to fight Xia Chi to the death.
But ironically, this might be the most effective way to get revenge on her.
Evening fell, and the hospital was bathed in a sickly orange glow. It made the place feel even more lifeless.
After finishing her call, Mo Qi lowered her phone. Beside her, Gu Bai’an grabbed her free arm.
Wearing a hospital gown, Gu Bai’an didn’t look sick at all. With makeup and bright red lipstick, she looked like a blooming hydrangea.
She glanced at the woman beside her. “I’m leaving.”
The other clung tightly to her arm, her sweet voice seductive and teasing, like feathers brushing lightly across sensitive skin.
“Mo Qi I’m sick. Stay with me a little longer.”
This damn fox. Mo Qi sneered inwardly. “I’ve been here all day. Look at yourself no one would believe you’re sick. You’re more energetic than I am.”
The words made Gu Bai’an blush. She twisted playfully and said, “So mean If I weren’t this energetic, how could I keep you satisfied, baby?”
Ugh. Women.
Mo Qi rolled her eyes, unfazed by the flirting.
“Okay, okay, I’ll stop.” Gu Bai’an quickly changed the subject, worried she’d upset Mo Qi again. The pursuit wasn’t over she didn’t want to go begging those “dog-head advisors” for tips again.
She asked playfully, “So, is your job just snitching to parents?”
“If my parents were like that, I’d be driven crazy. Their need for control is insane.”
“This has nothing to do with you,” Mo Qi replied coldly, prying the woman’s fingers off her arm. “My job isn’t your concern. Don’t forget I’m just your ex, kindly checking in. We have no relationship whatsoever.”
With that, she strode out of the VIP room.
A leaf from the pothos on the windowsill drifted to the floor just like Gu Bai’an’s mood.
She’d cursed Mo Qi so cruelly before and left so decisively. Now, chasing her back was proving nearly impossible.
She finally understood what it meant: Don’t burn bridges you never know when you’ll have to cross them again.
She desperately wished she could go back and slap her past self who had broken Mo Qi’s heart.
