The Female Lead is Quite Unusual - Episode 7
Lin Wan never expected Bai Yin to make a carnivorous flower!
She took a moment to collect herself before managing to offer a strained compliment: “The craftsmanship of this flower is excellent, and it looks quite unique.”
Upon closer reflection, Lin Wan could understand why Bai Yin would make a carnivorous flower. A delicate, pitiful little white flower like Bai Yin, trapped in this villa, might have harbored a suppressed dream of being bold, unrestrained, and capable of taking on the world.
With this thought, Lin Wan’s gaze toward Bai Yin grew even more affectionate. “Do you like carnivorous flowers in games, Miss?”
She had expected Bai Yin’s reply to be as brief as usual perhaps just a simple “Mm.” But instead, Bai Yin shook her head. “Not exactly. I was just curious about how long a carnivorous flower can lie in wait before it finally devours its prey.”
Lin Wan blinked, feeling a strange sensation creep over her. There was something oddly pointed about Bai Yin’s words, but when she looked closer, Bai Yin had already lowered her head and resumed eating dinner.
What ulterior motives could the kind, defenseless, fragile female lead from the story possibly have?
Lin Wan almost wished Bai Yin did have some cunning to her.
Shaking her head, Lin Wan pulled out her phone, searched for the answer, organized her thoughts, and spoke softly.
“Carnivorous flowers are just fictional plants. They don’t exist in nature. In some literary works, they can lie in wait for up to half a day before they can’t resist devouring their prey. But in others, they might even stalk their prey for ten days or half a month.”
Analyzing the information she’d found, Lin Wan concluded, “In short, Miss, it can lie in wait for as long as you imagine. After all, it’s purely a product of human imagination.”
Only after finishing her explanation did Lin Wan realize both Aunt Zhang and Bai Yin were staring at her.
“You silly girl,” Aunt Zhang chuckled. “Miss was just teasing you casually, and here you are, researching it like it’s some academic study.”
Lin Wan flushed, realizing she’d fallen into her habit of overthinking again. She gave an awkward laugh, about to brush it off, when Bai Yin unexpectedly chimed in.
“You’re not wrong, though.”
Lin Wan blinked in surprise, not expecting Bai Yin to back her up.
Bai Yin lowered her eyes again after speaking, sipping her soup unhurriedly, as if unaware of Lin Wan’s gaze.
But Lin Wan’s eyes instantly brightened.
The Bai Yin from the day before wouldn’t have been this warm toward her. It must have been the afternoon’s activities that had brought them closer.
Perhaps the effort of making the fake flowers had drained her energy, but Bai Yin ate more than usual that night. When Aunt Zhang left, she was practically beaming.
As long as Bai Yin’s appetite improved, Butler Zhao would reward Aunt Zhang handsomely.
Lin Wan saw Aunt Zhang out. Normally, this would have been the end of her shift, but worried that Bai Yin might feel bloated after eating more than usual, Lin Wan stayed a while longer to help with the fake flowers. She only left when Butler Zhao arrived, returning to her own room.
With experience under their belts, the two worked much faster this time. But Bai Yin didn’t make another carnivorous flower. Instead, she crafted two perfectly ordinary roses.
When Butler Zhao arrived, he cast a rather peculiar glance at Lin Wan a few times. Lin Wan figured he probably hadn’t expected her to get along with Bai Yin so quickly. Slightly smug, she lifted her chin and let him scrutinize her.
After returning, Lin Wan made a few more artificial flowers, estimating they’d be enough to fill a vase. She also bought some items online before finally going to sleep.
The next day, when Bai Yin opened the door promptly at nine, she was greeted by Lin Wan holding a bunch of artificial flowers, her smile radiant.
“Good morning, Miss! That dress looks absolutely stunning on you!”
Bai Yin wasn’t wearing her usual white dress today. Instead, she had on a floral maxi dress that made her appear even more delicate and enchanting.
Lin Wan’s hunch had been correct. After yesterday’s flower-making activity, Bai Yin had grown much closer to her. The usually reticent girl paused her gaze on Lin Wan’s face and, for the first time, responded to her greeting.
“Good morning, Lin Wan.”
Lin Wan’s smile instantly brightened even more. Hearing her name spoken by Bai Yin, it felt as though the syllables carried a sweeter melody.
She entered Bai Yin’s room and placed the flowers in the vase. Though the oversized carnivorous flower still looked somewhat out of place. After all, it was a flower Bai Yin had made herself. Lin Wan rearranged it several times before finally deciding to position it in the center, surrounded by the other blooms.
This arrangement somehow achieved an eerie harmony between the carnivorous flower and the rest.
The morning passed by just as quickly.
While Bai Yin was undergoing her medical check-up, Butler Zhao seemed to have something to discuss with her and waited outside the door alongside Lin Wan.
“Were you the one who taught the young miss how to make those artificial flowers in the room?”
After Lin Wan nodded, Butler Zhao sighed with emotion. “It’s true! Only peers can truly bond with one another!” He then gave Lin Wan a deep, meaningful look. “It’s rare to see the young miss so happy. I hope you’ll continue like this. When the time comes, we can discuss any terms you’d like.”
Lin Wan immediately understood. Butler Zhao, seeing how well she’d managed to win Bai Yin over, was testing her stance, hoping she’d stay by Bai Yin’s side long-term.
“Miss Bai Yin is so kind and beautiful, and she treats us with such consideration. Of course, I’ll take good care of her in the future.”
Lin Wan’s reassurance seemed to put Butler Zhao at ease, and she couldn’t help feeling a little proud: There was a reason the World Consciousness had chosen her to save the world! She’d made a breakthrough in the mission in such a short time. Even that infuriating woman who always competed with her for the top spot probably couldn’t have achieved this much progress.
“If you need reimbursement for any materials in the future, just bring the receipts to me.”
True to form, Butler Zhao seemed to relax upon hearing Lin Wan’s words. He smiled and thoughtfully added, “Why don’t you tell me how much you spent on materials yesterday? I’ll reimburse you.”
Since Butler Zhao had offered, Lin Wan didn’t hold back. She sent him screenshots of her purchases. Remembering she hadn’t installed the monitoring software on her phone, she simply handed it over to him directly.
“It must be a software issue.”
Though he said this, Butler Zhao’s gaze at Lin Wan was somewhat odd. He examined the phone for a while before finally speaking. “I’ll have the tech department take a look and try to return it to you by noon.”
At that moment, Bai Yin’s door opened, and Dr. Wang stepped out.
Steward Zhao routinely asked Dr. Wang a few standard questions. After receiving the reply that Bai Yin was in good health, he entered the room. When he came out again, he gave Lin Wan a few odd glances but ultimately said nothing, merely looking at her a few more times before heading downstairs.
Lin Wan remained calm under his scrutiny. Over the past few days, she had quickly grown closer to Bai Yin, handling every aspect of her duties flawlessly. Steward Zhao likely couldn’t find any fault with her and didn’t know how to bring anything up, which was why he stayed silent.
Lin Wan couldn’t help but lift her chin a little higher.
As the most meticulous task performer, Bai Yin and Steward Zhao’s attitudes had given her unprecedented confidence. After Steward Zhao left, Lin Wan, now brimming with motivation, immediately entered the room.
Bai Yin seemed to have finished her work on the prescription and was no longer stationed in front of the computer. Instead, she had lowered her head to read a book.
Lin Wan didn’t disturb her. She looked around the room, taking everything in, and pulled out her small notebook to jot things down.
Before long, Lin Wan was back in the kitchen helping Sister Zhang prepare lunch. After the meal, she took her usual short nap. Upon waking, she hurried back to her room, retrieved the materials she had prepared in advance, and presented them to Bai Yin.
“Miss, don’t you think the sofa looks a bit bare? It’s not very comfortable to sit on. Should we make a couple of throw pillows ourselves?”
Bai Yin remained silent for a long while before finally agreeing to Lin Wan’s request.
The materials Lin Wan had bought were semi-finished products. The pillow inserts were ready, but the covers were cross-stitched and needed to be sewn by hand.
Secretly hoping to soften the cold, rigid style of Bai Yin’s room, Lin Wan had deliberately chosen pink and other lively colors.
Embroidery was a meticulous task that couldn’t be rushed. The two of them spent three days completing the pillow covers.
After that, Lin Wan began guiding Bai Yin in making clothes for Barbie dolls, knitting scarves, braiding bracelets, and crafting wall art.
Though Lin Wan seemed to act without a plan, she had actually purchased everything according to a carefully thought-out strategy.
Most of the items she bought were used to decorate Bai Yin’s room. Before long, the room had transformed: it was no longer stark and monotonous, its color palette now bright and cheerful. Like the carnivorous flower, the newly crafted pieces achieved a subtle harmony with the space while completely altering its overall layout.
Throughout the process, Lin Wan was always prepared for Bai Yin to refuse. Strangely, though Bai Yin’s expression remained indifferent, she never once rejected any of Lin Wan’s suggestions.
After half a month of interaction, Lin Wan felt their relationship growing closer.
Conversations between Bai Yin and Lin Wan became more frequent. Occasionally, Bai Yin would even smile. Though the expression was fleeting, like an ephemeral bloom, it never failed to captivate Lin Wan, making her want to be even kinder to Bai Yin.
As for Steward Zhao, he seemed unusually busy during this period. Lin Wan rarely saw him, and the last time she encountered him was at the end of a hallway, where he was on the phone saying something like, “You must inspect it thoroughly.”
Afraid it might involve Bai Yin’s family affairs, Lin Wan deliberately avoided eavesdropping and didn’t listen closely.
Autumn arrived in the blink of an eye.
On this particularly sunny day, Lin Wan, as usual, brought out a pile of materials and guided Bai Yin in crafting a beautiful little basket.
After finishing the basket, Lin Wan didn’t hang it up as a decoration. Instead, she took out a prepared mask and whispered to Bai Yin, “Miss, there’s a row of orange trees in front of the villa. The oranges are ripe now, all golden and plump. They look very sweet.”
“Shall we take the basket and pick some to try?”
Lin Wan wanted Bai Yin to step outside the villa, gradually regain her confidence, and reconnect with the outside world. More importantly, in the original storyline, Zhao Feng, the male lead who had always harbored a secret love for Bai Yin had bought a villa nearby to watch over her.
Only by going outside would Bai Yin have a chance to meet Zhao Feng.
The scumbag male lead had broken off the engagement and gotten involved with Bai Ru. In Lin Wan’s eyes, such a foolish man who couldn’t tell right from wrong wasn’t worthy of Bai Yin.
But Zhao Feng had always been deeply devoted to Bai Yin perhaps there was still hope.
As a diligent task executor, Lin Wan naturally had to consider every angle for the sake of Bai Yin’s happiness.
