The Female Lead is Quite Unusual - Episode 41
Although Bai Yin had become much more relaxed and cheerful around Lin Wan recently, since the previous night, she had appeared unusually quiet. Perhaps it was because she was discussing tomb-sweeping matters with Steward Zhao, they had spent a long time together in the study.
When it was time to sleep, Bai Yin seemed especially dependent on Lin Wan. Without saying a word, her beautiful eyes fixed unwaveringly on Lin Wan. Just as Lin Wan was comforting her to sleep well, Bai Yin suddenly grasped Lin Wan’s hand.
“Wanwan, will you really stay with me forever?”
Bai Yin’s eyes were dark and deep, as if turbulent undercurrents were swirling within them.
Even though the person before her was the most delicate and fragile girl, Lin Wan felt an instinctive chill run down her spine. She felt like prey being watched by a predator, her mind almost going blank, instinctively wanting to curl into a ball.
“Yin Yin?” Lin Wan’s voice trembled slightly as she held Bai Yin’s hand. “What’s wrong with you?”
Bai Yin’s long eyelashes fluttered slightly as she half-closed her eyes, slowly leaning in to embrace Lin Wan tightly.
“It’s nothing. I’m just too happy.”
Lin Wan didn’t believe for a second that Bai Yin was acting this way out of happiness.
She could clearly sense Bai Yin’s unstable emotions.
At that moment, Bai Yin was like a volcano on the verge of eruption, as if she was desperately suppressing something.
Lin Wan felt she could understand Bai Yin: the next day was Li Ruyue’s death anniversary, the same day Bai Yin had lost the ability to walk. For Bai Yin, this day was anything but a fond memory.
That was why the usually proud and aloof young lady, who never showed vulnerability when sober, had emotionally broken down and held onto her while fully conscious.
Lin Wan’s heart ached deeply. Compared to seeing Bai Yin torment herself like this, she would much rather see her break free from it all and live freely in a new environment.
Lin Wan had been searching for doctors who might offer hope for Bai Yin’s treatment. She knew one doctor was on vacation in a foreign country for the past few months. Once they got through this difficult period, she planned to find time to go abroad and seek out that doctor to set her plan in motion.
Perhaps if Bai Yin went abroad, she could live more happily.
For now, this was only in Lin Wan’s plans. She wasn’t sure if she could find the doctor, so she didn’t dare mention it, afraid of raising Bai Yin’s hopes only to disappoint her.
All she could do was reach out and gently pat Bai Yin’s shoulder, whispering, “Yin Yin, no matter what, I will stay by your side. There’s no difficulty in this world that can’t be overcome. We can figure it out together. Our future will definitely get better and better.”
She didn’t know if her reassurance had any effect, only that Bai Yin buried her face in Lin Wan’s neck and, after a long while, softly murmured, “Mm.”
Lin Wan had long since prepared herself: no matter what, she couldn’t let Bai Yin go to the cemetery the next day. So, early in the morning, Lin Wan pretended to be sick.
To make her illness seem convincing, she had even sneaked out of bed in the middle of the night, opened the bathroom window, and stood in the cold breeze for a long time before returning to bed.
It was the lowest-cost and most effective method.
Lin Wan didn’t know why she was so confident that Bai Yin would stay because of her.
The next morning, when Bai Yin opened her eyes, she saw a pale-faced, colorless-lipped Lin Wan who looked utterly frail.
Bai Yin tightened her grip on Lin Wan’s hand and narrowed her eyes slightly.
“Yin Yin,” Lin Wan called out weakly, offering Bai Yin a feeble smile. Her voice carried a hint of obvious grievance. “My head hurts so much.”
Normally when she fell ill, she wouldn’t act coquettishly toward Bai Yin. After all, she was afraid of making Bai Yin worry.
But in this moment, Lin Wan was desperate to keep Bai Yin at home by any means necessary, so she held nothing back in expressing her discomfort.
“I’ll call the doctor.”
Perhaps it was a fever-induced hallucination, but Lin Wan felt there was something strange in Bai Yin’s gaze. It seemed tinged with anger. Yet when she looked closer, Bai Yin’s brows were furrowed, her eyes clearly filled with concern.
Bai Yin turned as if about to get up and call for someone, but how could Lin Wan let her have her way? Summoning her courage, Lin Wan wrapped her arms around Bai Yin’s waist.
“Yin Yin, I probably caught a chill when I went out for a bit yesterday. It’s really nothing serious.”
“I’m not too worried about myself, but you, your constitution is so weak. On such a cold day, it’s best if you don’t go out.
Lin Wan softened her voice, letting out a soft whimper as she gazed at Bai Yin, who had turned back with an expressionless face. Though Bai Yin’s expression showed no obvious abnormality, Lin Wan felt inexplicably guilty and couldn’t meet her eyes. Instead, she imitated Bai Yin’s usual coquettish manner, nuzzling against her neck.
This was the first time Lin Wan had ever shown such dependence toward Bai Yin.
As if surprised by Lin Wan’s actions, Bai Yin’s body stiffened momentarily, then actually began to tremble slightly.
Had she frightened the delicate young lady?
Feeling awkward, Lin Wan was about to release her when Bai Yin relaxed, returning the embrace and letting out a soft sigh.
“Thank you for your concern, Wanwan,” Bai Yin said, a faint blush suddenly coloring her cheeks, her eyes sparkling.
She reached out to touch Lin Wan’s forehead, as if verifying the truth of her words, but then her hand slid down along Lin Wan’s skin, coming to rest at the corner of her lips, where she gently rubbed.
Even though she knew Bai Yin was just checking her condition, meeting Bai Yin’s deep, abyssal gaze made Lin Wan’s spine instinctively stiffen. Her throat went dry, and a sudden urge to escape surged within her.
“There’s something dirty,” Bai Yin murmured hoarsely, rubbing the corner of Lin Wan’s mouth once more before leisurely withdrawing her hand.
Lin Wan’s throat tightened. For some reason, even though she was the one who was sick, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Bai Yin was the one more gravely ill.
Perhaps having confirmed that Lin Wan’s forehead wasn’t particularly warm, Bai Yin relaxed, a hint of laughter entering her tone.
“So you caught a chill when you went out,” Bai Yin murmured softly, as if sighing.
“You were in the bathroom for so long last night, and when you came back, your body was icy cold. I thought you might have caught a chill then and was considering asking Steward Zhao to have someone check the bathroom’s heating system. ”
“I… I was already feeling unwell back then, so I had diarrhea for a while. There’s nothing wrong with the bathroom’s heating system.”
She hadn’t expected Bai Yin to be awake at that time.
Lin Wan swallowed nervously, guiltily lowering her eyes. Deciding to change the subject, she tugged at Bai Yin and resumed her coquettish act: “Yin Yin, my head really hurts. Can you stay here with me and help distract me?”
After saying this, Lin Wan herself was startled: she was imitating Bai Yin’s usual sickly tone when speaking, yet while Bai Yin never sounded the least bit unnatural saying such things making others unable to help but feel pity for her. When Lin Wan spoke this way, no matter how she said it, it felt strange.
Lin Wan heard Bai Yin chuckle softly.
She didn’t know whether Bai Yin had seen through her clumsy act, but she felt so guilty that she didn’t dare look up at Bai Yin’s expression just then.
Lin Wan didn’t have to worry for long.
She got her wish, hearing Bai Yin’s sigh-like voice: “Wanwan, this is good.”
Bai Yin patted Lin Wan’s back: “Wanwan can rely on me a little more.”
“Since Wanwan is feeling so unwell, of course I have to stay here and take care of you.”
As she spoke, Bai Yin gently stroked Lin Wan’s cheek, adopting the uniquely delicate tone of a pampered young lady, as if somewhat displeased: “But, Wanwan, you’re so silly, letting yourself get into such a sorry state.”
“You know, I never do business at a loss,” Bai Yin’s tone was faint as she glanced at Lin Wan. “I’ll keep an account for Wanwan.”
Lin Wan didn’t care about the young lady’s soft threat.
But she couldn’t ignore it either. If Bai Yin brooded over it and one day decided to settle old scores, crying pitifully, Lin Wan wouldn’t be able to handle it.
So, Lin Wan decided to coax Bai Yin a little.
Awkwardly, she wrapped her arms around Bai Yin’s waist, swayed slightly, and softened her voice: “I know I was wrong, I’ll be more careful in the future. Yin Yin, don’t be angry.”
“Too late.” Though Bai Yin said this, her lips curled slightly.
Seeing Bai Yin’s small reaction, Lin Wan secretly breathed a sigh of relief: Had the young lady let it go?
“I really won’t do it again. Miss, could you have someone bring me some medicine?” Lin Wan spoke softly, deciding to divert Bai Yin’s attention.
She realized that pretending to be sick in front of Bai Yin was really difficult. Facing Bai Yin, probably because she felt too guilty, being held by Bai Yin and feeling the warmth of the covers, her legs went weak, and she broke out in a light sweat, feeling much more comfortable all over.
But there was no way Lin Wan would admit she was feeling better at a time like this.
She closed her eyes, avoiding Bai Yin’s suddenly intense gaze, and spoke softly again, naming a common cold medicine.
Bai Yin turned around, made a phone call, and before long, there was a knock at the door.
Butler Zhao’s voice came through the crack in the door: “Miss, are you unwell? Do you need a doctor?”
“No need, just leave the medicine by the door.” Bai Yin turned her head, glanced at someone who had gone all out to fake an illness, and added, “Lin Wan is sick.”
“Lin Wan is so clingy. When she’s sick, she insists I stay with her.”
Bai Yin’s lips curved slightly, and she paused before continuing, “This year, I won’t be going to sweep the graves. Send someone in my name to do it.”
“Last night, the driver told me the car I usually ride in broke down, so it’s been replaced. On your way, take that car in for maintenance.”
Lin Wan’s eyes widened as she realized that even if she hadn’t pretended to be sick, Bai Yin probably wouldn’t have been in danger, because Li Pei and the others had provided the license plate of the car Bai Yin most frequently used.
But just to be safe, keeping Bai Yin at home was the right move.
Bai Yin hung up the phone, then got up and went to the door to fetch the medicine for Lin Wan.
Lin Wan had intended to take the medicine herself, but Bai Yin insisted on feeding her. Lin Wan had no choice but to brace herself and let Bai Yin spoon-feed her until she finished the medicine.
While feeding her, Bai Yin appeared incredibly gentle.
For some reason, whenever Lin Wan met Bai Yin’s gaze, she felt an indescribable strangeness in her emotions. Her throat went dry, her heart raced wildly, and she broke out in a sweat.
The medicine took effect quickly.
While Bai Yin was in the bathroom washing up, Lin Wan’s head grew heavy and dizzy, and she desperately wanted to fall asleep right then.
But she remembered her plan. Though she kept yawning, she stubbornly resisted drifting off.
Only when Bai Yin emerged from the bathroom did she open her bleary eyes, tug at the hem of Bai Yin’s clothes, and whisper, “Today, I want you to stay and take care of me. Even if I fall asleep, you can’t go anywhere.”
“But I’m not good at taking care of people. I’m afraid I won’t do it well.”
Could it be that Bai Yin actually had plans to go out while she was asleep?
“I’m easy to take care of. Just do whatever you like,” Lin Wan said through a yawn, forcing her eyes open to look at Bai Yin, determined to get a promise.
“Is that so?”
Bai Yin lowered her head, her gaze shifting from Lin Wan’s hand clutching hers, to Lin Wan’s collar which had unconsciously loosened from the heat and then to Lin Wan’s pale pink lips, slightly chapped from illness, before finally meeting Lin Wan’s misty, dazed eyes.
“Alright.”
Bai Yin’s throat moved as she agreed, a faint smile curling her lips. “You said it yourself, Wanwan.”
