The Female Lead is Quite Unusual - Episode 24
The young miss was just too adorable like this!
“That’s right, why is Miss in such a good mood today? I’m truly no match for you.”
Lin Wan had only said it casually and didn’t expect Bai Yin to actually eat more. Unable to help herself, she broke into a doting smile and playfully praised Bai Yin in an exaggerated tone.
Listening to Lin Wan’s dramatic voice, Sister Zhang couldn’t hold back a snort of laughter.
She glanced around, but noticing Bai Yin’s expression shift, she quickly gathered Bai Yin’s tableware and left the room.
For a moment, only Lin Wan and Bai Yin remained in the room.
Under Bai Yin’s quiet stare, Lin Wan belatedly realized she had gotten a little carried away.
Lately, Bai Yin had been strangely indulgent toward her, and sometimes Lin Wan would forget that Bai Yin was a frail young lady who wasn’t in the best of health. She just wanted to tease her, to see her flustered and blushing in that awkward way.
But remembering Bai Yin’s childish, almost elementary-school-level competitive behavior earlier, Lin Wan couldn’t help but want to laugh again. Afraid that the delicate young miss might sulk over it, Lin Wan cleared her throat and forced a warm smile, changing the subject.
“Bai Yin, my porridge has stewed pork ribs in it, with peanuts and corn kernels. It’s really delicious! I can’t bear to finish it all at once.”
“Would you like to try some?”
Lin Wan carefully wiped off the remnants of porridge from the spoon and scooped up a bite, holding it out to Bai Yin.
She had only said it as a polite way to distract Bai Yin and keep her from sulking. She certainly didn’t think Bai Yin would actually drink from the same spoon. After all, Bai Yin was a germaphobe. Lin Wan had made porridge with even more care before, and Bai Yin had only taken a single sip.
Yet, to Lin Wan’s surprise, Bai Yin’s gaze lingered on Lin Wan’s lips. Her throat moved slightly, and then she suddenly leaned forward, taking a small sip from Lin Wan’s spoon.
?!
Lin Wan’s eyes widened.
Bai Yin seemed extremely pleased with Lin Wan’s reaction, a faint glimmer of amusement flashing in her eyes. Not only did she finish the spoonful in delicate sips, but she even smiled at Lin Wan and said, “I want more.”
Only then did Lin Wan snap out of her daze, hurriedly scooping up another spoonful of porridge.
One spoonful after another, Bai Yin drank several more, her eyes never leaving Lin Wan’s face.
Bai Yin still ate with refined elegance, taking small, delicate sips. Her jet-black hair cascaded over her shoulders like a waterfall, her flawless skin pale and smooth, without a single blemish. When those crystal-clear eyes brimmed with laughter and focused intently on someone, it was like staring into an endless whirlpool. One that could completely pull you in.
The longer Lin Wan looked, the more Bai Yin seemed like an adorable little kitten.
But as she watched, Lin Wan suddenly felt something strange, as if a tiny kitten had somehow taken up residence in her heart. That kitten was scratching incessantly; tingling, tickling, all the way up to Lin Wan’s throat, leaving it inexplicably dry.
This feeling was just too bizarre!
Even though she knew the petty Bai Yin was probably doing this on purpose, faced with her like this, Lin Wan’s cheeks still flushed uncontrollably. She couldn’t help but avert her gaze.
“I’m full!”
Lin Wan heard Bai Yin’s soft chuckle. The delicate young miss seemed to have noticed her embarrassment. Having exacted her revenge, Bai Yin reclined contentedly in her wheelchair.
Lin Wan seethed inwardly but didn’t dare tease Bai Yin any further. With a face that beautiful, Bai Yin already possessed an unbeatable weapon.
Moreover, Bai Yin seemed to have noticed that Lin Wan was often captivated by her beauty and had grown increasingly adept at using her mesmerizing face to her advantage.
There was a hint of cunning in her actions, yet it wasn’t the kind that annoyed people. Lin Wan pondered for a long time about how to describe Bai Yin, but the only word that came to mind was “sly.”
Resigned, Lin Wan lowered her head and stirred the porridge in her bowl.
Under Bai Yin’s intense gaze, Lin Wan couldn’t bring herself to eat properly. After hurriedly taking a few bites, she set down her spoon.
She returned the dishes to the staff kitchen and wandered outside for a while until the heat in her cheeks subsided. Only then did she return to Bai Yin’s room, sitting beside her with her head bowed.
Lin Wan had a habit since childhood. Whenever she immersed herself in a book, she would become completely absorbed, oblivious to her surroundings. She had often been called a “bookworm” for it.
Besides, she disliked dense theoretical texts and preferred straightforward case studies. Reading them never felt like a chore; in fact, she found them enlightening and even enjoyable.
Lin Wan was utterly engrossed.
So much so that even after Bai Yin circled the room three times in her wheelchair, Lin Wan still hadn’t looked up from her book.
It wasn’t until Bai Yin finally pursed her lips and called out, “Lin Wan,” that she snapped out of her daze and lifted her head.
“Let’s go downstairs for a walk!”
Bai Yin’s gaze drifted to the floor, avoiding Lin Wan’s eyes.
Lin Wan didn’t notice Bai Yin’s awkwardness.
She glanced outside. Winter was gradually setting in, and the sunlight was just right. It made sense that Bai Yin wanted to go out for some fresh air.
She moved to push Bai Yin’s wheelchair but hadn’t even lifted a hand before Bai Yin pursed her lips and wheeled herself forward.
Watching Bai Yin’s slender back, Lin Wan couldn’t help but feel a pang of worry. Bai Yin was so thin. What if she tired herself out pushing the wheelchair? Knowing her, she’d probably stubbornly refuse to ask for help.
The more Lin Wan thought about it, the more convinced she became that Bai Yin would push herself too hard.
Fortunately, on their way out, Lin Wan ran into Butler Zhao. Relieved, she was about to ask him to help push Bai Yin’s wheelchair, but he simply chuckled and waved her off after a glance at Bai Yin. “The young miss wants to do it herself right now. You should trust her.”
Butler Zhao was the one who worried about Bai Yin the most. If he said so, then Bai Yin must truly be capable. Reassured, Lin Wan relaxed and followed leisurely behind Bai Yin.
As they passed through the villa, everyone greeted Bai Yin with warm smiles.
“See? Everyone likes you so much!”
Remembering the earlier incident that had upset Bai Yin, Lin Wan wanted to cheer her up with some kind words. Seizing the opportunity, she added, “They all want to see you healthy and happy.”
Bai Yin glanced up at Lin Wan, her expression unreadable. “It’s because I pay them well.”
After saying this, as if recalling something, she looked at Lin Wan again before lowering her head.
Lin Wan was taken aback by Bai Yin’s response.
She realized Bai Yin had a deeply contradictory nature. At times, she seemed naive, yet she could also display an uncanny insight into things. Other times, she acted mature, but in certain moments, she was as childish as a kid.
“It’s not the same. Plenty of people can offer high salaries. Take Dr. Wang and the others, they’re experts in their fields. Even without you, many would want to hire them.”
“But they choose to stay by your side willingly.”
“Money is certainly a factor, but more than that, it’s because they adore you.”
Lin Wan blinked but didn’t outright dismiss Bai Yin’s words, adding her own perspective: “Besides, if I were them, I wouldn’t feel at ease leaving you either. You’re so beautiful, kind, intelligent, and generous. Everyone would want to protect you, to wish you a long and healthy life.”
“Is that how you feel too?”
Bai Yin lifted her gaze to meet Lin Wan’s, her eyes narrowing slightly as if deep in thought.
“Of course.”
Lin Wan curved her lips, entirely unfazed by Bai Yin’s scrutiny, and even winked at her. “My sincerity for you is as clear as the heavens. No one in this world wishes for your happiness more than I do.”
“And even if you didn’t give me money, even if you fell into hardship, I’d stay by your side forever.”
After all, Bai Yin possessed an incredibly high level of luck. Something far more valuable to Lin Wan than mere wealth.
A faint smile tugged at Bai Yin’s lips as she glanced at Lin Wan, but she turned her head away with a soft scoff. “Sweet talker.”
Lin Wan didn’t miss the hint of amusement in Bai Yin’s expression, knowing full well that Bai Yin secretly enjoyed hearing such words. She wasn’t about to be deterred by the dismissive remark.
“Time will prove everything,” Lin Wan continued. “One day, you’ll realize that I’ll always be by your side. No one wishes for your peace, joy, and smooth journey more than I do.”
As expected, the moment these words left her lips, the delicate young lady’s ears flushed red.
Lin Wan felt she had struck the right balance. Any more would risk sounding insincere so she didn’t press further. Instead, she pulled out her phone and played some music.
She chose light instrumental tunes, their cheerful and melodious notes transporting her back to the days in her own world when she could immerse herself in research without distractions.
Back then, she had always felt time was endless, wholly devoted to her ideals. Little did she know the world would end before she even had the chance to truly understand it.
Lin Wan looked down at Bai Yin’s dark hair and suddenly felt a revelation: life was simply an experience. Many things held no inherent meaning, and the act of idly strolling like this wasn’t as unbearable as she had imagined.
Perhaps it was because she was with Bai Yin.
Bai Yin was so endearing. If she had been born in Lin Wan’s world, even without the matter of collecting luck, Lin Wan was certain they would have been the best of friends.
It wasn’t until dinner that Lin Wan belatedly realized why Bai Yin had wanted to go for a walk earlier. She had overeaten at lunch.
By dinnertime, Bai Yin had returned to her usual portion size. When Lin Wan eagerly asked if she wanted to share the brown rice from her bowl, Bai Yin immediately shook her head, subtly pressing a hand to her stomach.
Recalling how Bai Yin had repeatedly rubbed her belly during their walk, Lin Wan finally understood.
She nearly burst out laughing but held back, knowing Bai Yin was easily embarrassed. Now that she had finally shown signs of eating a little more, Lin Wan decided to play ignorant.
After dinner, she retreated to her room and called Dr. Wang to inquire about Bai Yin’s legs.
If the paralysis were long-term, Bai Yin’s legs should have shown signs of atrophy. Yet Lin Wan had seen them. They were slender and well-shaped, marred only by a scar that slightly disrupted their beauty. There was no trace of deterioration.
A flicker of hope ignited in Lin Wan’s heart perhaps there was a chance Bai Yin could recover.
Dr. Wang hesitated, only saying that Bai Yin’s condition was a bit complicated: Bai Yin could stand up and even take a few steps, likely because she had been persistent with her rehabilitation, which prevented her leg muscles from atrophying.
However, Bai Yin’s nerves were damaged, and she would need several more surgeries to fully regain her ability to walk. Currently, the leading experts in this field were all abroad, and those specialists rarely traveled to China for work.
As long as there was still hope for recovery, it was excellent news for Lin Wan!
Overjoyed, Lin Wan noted down the names of the doctors Dr. Wang mentioned and looked up their information online. She secretly decided that when she had time, she would go abroad to seek out these doctors and find a way to invite them to China to perform the surgeries for Bai Yin.
Since nothing was certain yet, Lin Wan naturally wouldn’t tell Bai Yin.
But the possibility of Bai Yin recovering filled Lin Wan with immense happiness, and she suddenly felt a strong urge to chat with Bai Yin.
So, Lin Wan opened the chat window again.
After agonizing for a long time over what to say, she finally settled on a cautious “Good night.”
[Blanket-tucking GIF]
She thought Bai Yin was already asleep.
But to her surprise, the moment she sent the message, Bai Yin replied with two words: “Come here!”
Lin Wan’s eyes widened in astonishment.
With a mix of disbelief and excitement, she scrambled out of bed and opened her door.
Sure enough, the door across from hers was already open.
Inside, Lin Wan saw Bai Yin sitting in her wheelchair, already dressed in pajamas, her hair slightly disheveled.
Bai Yin glanced at her, then turned and wheeled herself back to the bedroom, lying down on the bed and closing her eyes.
Her face, half-buried in the blankets, looked small and delicate, with long lashes and slightly pursed lips; utterly adorable.
But even more endearing was Bai Yin’s personality, which took the GIF so seriously!
Lin Wan couldn’t help but let out a soft laugh, her heart melting into a puddle in that instant.
“Good night,” she whispered, bending down just like in the GIF to gently tuck Bai Yin in.
