The Fallen Film Queen’s Possessive Alpha - Chapter 58
“That same night after your prison visit, Senior was transferred. What happened afterward, I don’t know.”
Song Ange sniffled, her tone despondent as she told her sister, “The Zhou family hasn’t shared any updates either, but based on my tests, someone injected Senior with another person’s pheromones, triggering pheromone rejection.”
For someone with pheromone dysregulation syndrome, after finding a highly compatible match for treatment, deep exposure to another person’s pheromones is like an old man hanging himself sheer recklessness.
“I don’t know if your coming here for auxiliary treatment will even help. And,” Song Ange paused, reorganizing her words before continuing, “I suspect what was injected into Senior wasn’t just pheromones, but something else.”
At three in the morning, the sky still dark, Song Haoyin walked hurriedly into the hospital with her sister, her face haggard. She had mustered all her energy for the four-hour drive from home to the hospital since there was no time to call a driver, she had driven herself.
Yet, upon hearing her sister’s conclusion, Song Haoyin stopped in her tracks, brows furrowing slightly. “Who else have you told about this?”
“No one,” Ange replied, continuing toward the ward with her sister. “After the incident, when Senior was brought to the hospital, it was Lawyer Ji who called me here. She was also the one who told me to contact you.”
“Ji Xubai? Just her? No one else?”
Faced with her sister’s skepticism, Song Ange shook her head. “No one else.”
Outside the special ward, Ji Xubai sat slumped in a waiting chair, looking utterly exhausted. Only when she heard footsteps did she notice the Song sisters and stood to greet them.
Among the people outside the ward, a few looked familiar. Song Haoyin searched her memory before finally recalling those familiar faces were likely Zhou family bodyguards.
Noticing her gaze, Ji Xubai explained, “The police messed up. They’re too embarrassed to say much now. The current security is all from the Zhou family. Let’s talk privately here, take a look at this document first.”
Handing the file to Song Haoyin, Ji Xubai turned to Song Ange. “The doctors here specialize in pheromone treatment, but I still had my doubts. That’s why I called you.”
Only then did Song Ange share her suspicions with Ji Xubai: “Though emergency treatment stabilized her after injecting neutralizers, I suspect what was given to Senior wasn’t just pheromones or at least, not purely pheromones. There might have been some drug component, like a hallucinogen. Of course, it’s just speculation for now. The lab results aren’t back yet, so…”
“If it was a drug, would the current treatment plan have any adverse effects?”
Song Haoyin, who had been flipping through the documents, interjected. After Ange assured her it wouldn’t, she sent her sister to check on the lab reports. Once Ange was gone, she held up the file and asked Ji Xubai, “Is this Qiwei’s… will?”
What Song Haoyin held was indeed Zhou Qiwei’s will, complete with her signature. The date signed was the day before Zhou Qiwei visited the film set and watched her perform the jumping scene.
“After she publicly hinted that she had no interest in Jiuzhou and would renounce her inheritance rights, she came to me to draft this will. And then there’s that shareholding proxy document.”
Ji Xubai sighed, pointing at the documents: “Now, the house you cohabit in, all her private collections including but not limited to rare books, calligraphy, paintings, artworks her cars, the plane you took to York, even her shares in the Ferris wheel company, are all left to you.”
“Her seat at the Information Research Foundation and her office at the Rubik’s Research Institute go to An Ge.”
There were also items left for Du Xin and Xuan Tinglu, and even Ji Xubai himself was named in Zhou Qiwei’s will, though there was no need to elaborate further.
“Was this your plan all along? Did you know something would happen, so you?” Song Haoyin’s mind was in turmoil. She had seen people draft wills early before and could understand it. But suddenly having her girlfriend’s will laid out before her made her feel as if her heart were being squeezed tight, leaving her struggling to breathe.
“I wish it were our plan. I wish I knew everything, but unfortunately, that’s not the case.”
Ji Xubai forced a bitter smile as he sat across from Song Haoyin: “Zhou Zhao came and left. The two from the Zhou family still don’t know about this. Tomorrow no, today but even if they find out, they won’t come. Because they’ll be doing something more meaningful, something that can actually help Qiwei solve her troubles. You understand, right? The Zhou family is strange. Saying they’re cold might sound harsh, but saying they’re deeply affectionate would be laughable.”
“So, apart from you, there’s really no one else Qiwei could entrust her most personal belongings to. Handing them to you means they’ll be well taken care of. She trusts you.”
Song Haoyin clutched the documents, lost in thought, while Ji Xubai fell silent.
The floor was eerily quiet until the sun gradually rose, casting light on everyone. Yet Zhou Qiwei remained unconscious in the hospital bed. Just as Ji Xubai had said, once the Zhou family learned the news, Chancellor Du led a legal team to the Ministry of Justice to “chat” with old friends, while Madam Zhou convened an emergency meeting at Jiuzhou headquarters some shareholders had proposed terminating the collaboration between Rubik’s Industries and Jiuzhou.
Du Xin had to attend the meeting. Xuan Tinglu rushed to the hospital but didn’t stay long she still had to meet with bankers to coordinate investments in Rubik’s domestic and York-based industrial parks.
The monitoring equipment in the ward had been removed. An Ge was still in the lab, Ji Xubai was in a remote meeting with the Zhou family’s legal team, leaving only Song Haoyin, drowning in regret.
Only she entered the ward and sat beside Zhou Qiwei. She took call after call, watching friends come and go, and suddenly understood what Ji Xubai meant by “no one else to entrust.”
Everyone had their own lives, their own problems to handle. But Song Haoyin was an inseparable part of Zhou Qiwei’s life.
Unconsciously, their bond had surpassed all others. Being together was life itself.
A cold sensation touched her face. Song Haoyin wiped her eyes, frustrated at her own obliviousness. She should have noticed sooner Zhou Qiwei’s growing dependence on her, how she reported her whereabouts everywhere, even accommodating her unconditionally at times.
She would follow along when talking about their child, discuss their future together, and try to squeeze out more time to be with her.
Perhaps because Zhou Qiwei’s actions were quiet and unspoken she never voiced how much effort she was making Song Haoyin never realized that since the new film started shooting, she hadn’t actively cared for Zhou Qiwei in a long time. Just like with her pheromone disorder, if Zhou didn’t bring it up, Song wouldn’t ask.
I’m such a terrible girlfriend.
Song Haoyin covered her face, but her eyes were too dry for tears. Really, the one who deserved to cry the most right now was this poor soul in front of her.
“Jiejie, what’s wrong?”
