- Chapter 2 - Breaking Legs and Kneeling at the Ancestral Hall
It was obviously too late to jump ship now. Shen Zhaoran knelt down quickly and immediately confessed everything.
“Where did you find that person?”
Shen Zhaoran fell silent again.
It was her assistant, Qi Meng, who had helped her find the hacker, but she could not betray her.
Shen Junhuai pointed it out directly. “Qi Meng helped you find them, did she not?”
Shen Zhaoran quickly cried out, “No!”
She then added in a low voice, “I found them online myself.”
“Which website? Pull it up.”
“…”
“Shen Zhaoran.”
“Yes!”
“Why did I install a GPS tracker on you?”
“For my safety.”
Shen Zhaoran deflated, pressing her forehead against Shen Junhuai’s shoulder. “I just wanted to give you a surprise. Otherwise, you would open the location and see me drifting in the middle of the Pacific Ocean; how boring would that be?”
Seeing that he did not speak, she grabbed his arm and shook it, calling out “Brother, Brother” incessantly.
Shen Junhuai was worn down by her persistence; he had never been able to bring himself to speak harshly to Shen Zhaoran.
“Do not let it happen again.”
“Hehe, I know.”
Shen Zhaoran did not let go of his arm. After acting cute, she mentioned that she had to attend her cousin’s engagement party next month.
Shen Junhuai asked, “Xia Zeyu is getting engaged?”
Shen Zhaoran shook her head. “It is the eldest cousin.”
Shen Junhuai was genuinely surprised this time. “Xia Shengxuan?”
Shen Zhaoran nodded. “Auntie sent the invitation to our house. You have not been home lately, so you did not know.”
Xia Shengxuan had a first love he could not forget. When they broke up, it was very ugly, and since she had gone abroad and lost contact, everyone assumed the matter was over.
As it turned out, even the second son, Xia Zeyu, was already dating, yet Xia Shengxuan remained single. Only then did they realize where the problem lay.
Shen Zhaoran understood why he was surprised and explained, “Maybe he has had a change of heart. Auntie told him to go on a blind date, and he just went. Even Auntie was shocked herself.”
Shen Junhuai frowned, but in the end, he did not say anything.
Back at the hotel, Shen Zhaoran went into her room to rest, while Shen Junhuai attended an online meeting across time zones.
Halfway through the meeting, Shen Zhaoran knocked and entered, glanced at him, then quietly closed the door and left.
She had probably just taken a shower, as her hair was still damp. Dressed in white, fluffy pajamas, she looked like a little rabbit peeking out from a burrow when she poked her head in.
This distracted Shen Junhuai. He sent a message to his assistant in China, telling him to speed up the process and cut out a lot of unnecessary content.
The meeting ended quickly. Shen Junhuai took off his headset and pushed the door open, only to find Shen Zhaoran sitting on the sofa in the living room playing a game.
Shen Junhuai glanced at her phone screen and then touched the ends of her hair. “Why have you not dried your hair?”
Shen Zhaoran killed an enemy with a major move, put down her phone, and looked up at Shen Junhuai. “It is practically dry already.”
Her hair was long and thick, making it a hassle to dry. Usually, her assistant took care of it, but since the assistant was not there this time, she was too lazy to do it and just left it semi-damp.
Shen Junhuai went to the room to get the hairdryer and began to help her dry her hair.
The scent of her shampoo mixed with Shen Zhaoran’s unique fragrance wafted over.
His fingers curled instinctively, but he still calmly tucked her long hair away.
Shen Zhaoran remained sitting on the sofa. Once the hairdryer stopped, she said, “Mom called you earlier, but you did not answer. She called me to ask what you were doing and when you were coming home. She also said the Xu family’s youngest daughter is in New York, and she wants to arrange for you two to meet.”
Shen Junhuai replied, “I have no time.”
Shen Zhaoran was amused. “I knew it. That is what I told Mom, too.”
Shen Junhuai patted her hair again. “Alright, go to sleep.”
Shen Zhaoran replied, “I am not sleepy at this hour.”
Shen Junhuai asked, “Then what do you want to do?”
Shen Zhaoran picked up her phone. “Let us play games.”
Shen Junhuai looked at the time. “Three consecutive wins, then you go to sleep.”
Shen Zhaoran answered, “Mmm, mmm, mmm.”
Shen Zhaoran sat in a slouchy position while playing, leaning half her body against Shen Junhuai. Shen Junhuai suppressed the emotions in his heart, his hands moving quickly and steadily.
Winning three games in a row did not take long. This time, Shen Zhaoran was very obedient and went back to her room to rest.
Shen Junhuai sat in the living room for a while longer before standing up to continue his work.
He had been like this for days: meeting business partners during the day and returning to the hotel at night to conduct meetings and work across time zones.
On her first night in New York, Shen Zhaoran did not sleep very well; her biological clock was likely still a bit confused. She woke up after only a short sleep, and looking at the time, it was only 3:00 AM.
With half-closed eyes, she got out of bed in a daze, intending to find some water.
After finishing her water at the island counter, she noticed a faint light coming from the study.
Shen Zhaoran wondered what was happening.
She walked over and pushed the door open just a crack. “Brother, you are still not asleep?”
Shen Junhuai was on a call with someone; he did not take off his headset, but he walked over to Shen Zhaoran and touched her forehead.
Shen Zhaoran whispered, “I do not have a fever; I just got up to get some water.”
She had been a premature baby and had a weak constitution; she often had fevers and colds as a child, so the whole family was used to it. It was only in the last two years that her health had improved, and she had gotten sick less often.
Shen Junhuai looked at her attire, frowned, and said a few more words before hanging up the phone.
Shen Zhaoran had come straight from under the covers, wearing only a thin silk nightgown. Even with the central air conditioning running, such fluctuations between hot and cold could easily make her sick.
Shen Junhuai took her back to her room, watched her lie down, and tucked the quilt in for her.
Shen Zhaoran blinked at him. “Is work that busy? Xuan Zuo said it was fine.”
“Go to sleep,” Shen Junhuai said without answering.
Shen Zhaoran thought for a moment and asked, “Cannot you sleep?”
“…”
Sometimes Shen Junhuai felt helpless; Shen Zhaoran was always clever at the wrong times.
Shen Junhuai had no choice but to say, “No.”
Shen Zhaoran pondered again. “Is it because of the blind date? I will help you find a way to solve it.”
Shen Junhuai asked with a faint, inscrutable smile, “How do you plan to solve it?”
Shen Zhaoran answered, “Zhou Hongyu has plenty of rotten ideas; I will copy a few.”
Zhou Hongyu was Shen Zhaoran’s childhood friend. He could change girlfriends eighteen times a year, and his reasons for breaking up could fill a book.
When Shen Junhuai heard the name Zhou Hongyu, the smile on his face faded slightly. “You do not need to worry about it.”
Shen Zhaoran looked at him, wanting to say something but hesitating.
Shen Junhuai prompted, “Say what you want to say.”
Shen Zhaoran asked, “You would not end up like the eldest cousin, would you?”
Although, as far as she knew, Shen Junhuai had never dated anyone, he had studied abroad and had been traveling for business for years; who knew if he had some secret “rotten peach blossom” she did not know about?
Shen Junhuai felt a bit helpless.
If he were truly like Xia Shengxuan, that would actually be good news. Right now, his situation was at the level where he would be “beaten to the point of breaking his legs and forced to kneel at the ancestral hall.”
With a blank expression, he reached out and covered Shen Zhaoran’s eyes, manually forcing her to close them.
Shen Zhaoran muttered, “Fine then.”
“Goodnight, Brother.”
“Hmm, sleep now.”
She had originally woken up halfway through the night, and in the dim environment, she fell asleep quickly.
Shen Junhuai sat beside her, watching her by the dim moonlight, and it was a long time before he reached out to gently brush across her brow.
