Chapter 63: Rhapsody Three
The next morning, when the warm sunlight fell on her eyelashes, Lu Jiayin reluctantly rolled over and tumbled directly into a soft embrace.
Zhen Zhen stroked her hair and called out softly: “I heard someone walking around outside the door half an hour ago. It must be time for you to get up.”
Yesterday, to surprise Lu Jiayin, she deliberately didn’t notify her of the trip and contacted Assistant Ding Ding directly. Thus, the person lingering outside the room clearly knew Lu Jiayin wasn’t alone and was considerate enough not to knock.
But they were here for the film festival, and the work schedule must be packed. Thinking of this, Zhen Zhen didn’t indulge Lu Jiayin’s desire to sleep in. Instead, she lowered her head, kissed her cheek again, and coaxed: “Will you get up? If you want, I’ll go to work with you today?”
Hearing this, Lu Jiayin finally opened her eyes. Her voice still carried a hint of drowsiness as she whispered: “Really?”
Zhen Zhen had spent some time with her on a film set before and didn’t see any issue with it, so she replied: “Really.”
CEO Zhen, ready to serve as an assistant, picked her actress up from the bed, personally squeezed toothpaste onto her brush, and drew a bath. While waiting for Lu Jiayin to get ready, she casually asked: “What’s your schedule today?”
Today was the opening day of the Cannes Film Festival. As one of the highly anticipated entries, the Shadow Light crew was scheduled to attend the opening red carpet ceremony.
Lu Jiayin’s heart stirred, and she immediately invited Zhen Zhen to walk the red carpet with her.
When she heard this request, Zhen Zhen’s first reaction was to refuse. Although work occasionally required her to attend social functions, deep down, she still had a somewhat socially anxious personality and strongly resisted this kind of public appearance.
“It’s not really appropriate for me to go on the red carpet,” she considered, looking for words to politely decline. “Besides, the crew must have already finalized the schedule. A sudden decision like this will cause trouble for Director Long…”
Director Long Jing, who learned Zhen Zhen was in Cannes, didn’t feel troubled at all. In fact, after hearing on the phone that the golden sponsor had arrived, she personally rushed over from another villa five hundred meters away with her stylist.
“Why didn’t you let us know you were coming!” Perhaps due to the joy of a good occasion, with the movie she had poured her heart into finished and a few days of sunbathing by the sea enjoyed, Director Long looked radiant. “…You don’t have a dress ready? That’s no problem at all!”
She pulled the large clothing rack behind her with a whoosh: “It’s a good thing I planned ahead. The styling team I brought this time is the best I’ve ever worked with. Come, let CEO Zhen see your capabilities…”
With the director having said so much, Zhen Zhen truly had no way to refuse. Seeing her expression loosen, the stylists who had been waiting nearby immediately surrounded her with enthusiasm.
Zhen Zhen realized for the first time that the time and energy an actress puts into a glamorous entrance far exceeded her imagination.
Since Director Long arranged for her to walk the red carpet with Lu Jiayin, their outfits had to complement each other. As the female lead of Shadow Light, Lu Jiayin’s gown had been fixed long ago—a black and white haute couture embroidered long dress. The upper part of the dress was layered with black sheer fabric, exposing her entire back, and the silk skirt flowed down, embroidered with rich patterns in silver thread.
The stylist chose a matching black and white theme for Zhen Zhen. The difference was that her top was a white V-neck blouse, showcasing her slender neckline, and the bottom half was a pair of black cigarette trousers. Zhen Zhen was tall, and this outfit suited her perfectly, giving her a distinctive, gallant aura.
Her hairstyle didn’t need to be overly elaborate. After tying a seemingly simple but intricately detailed high ponytail, the stylist smiled and asked for Lu Jiayin’s opinion. Lu Jiayin nodded with satisfaction and added: “It’s still missing something.”
She lifted her skirt and walked to the dressing table, pulling out a pair of silver-rimmed, non-prescription glasses: “She looks beautiful in glasses.”
The stylist paired the glasses with the look and instantly beamed: “Indeed, only the person next to you truly understands the charm points of their lover.”
Putting on the glasses added a subtle, unique charm to the originally refined and heroic styling. Zhen Zhen blinked in slight discomfort: “…I usually only wear glasses for work. Won’t I look a bit nerdy?”
Everyone responded in unison: “No.”
Not only did she not look dull, but there was even a subtle… sexiness to it.
The film festival opened punctually in the afternoon. Reporters and film enthusiasts from all over the world had already gathered in front of the historic Palais des Festivals. The long stone steps were covered by the red carpet, stretching into a star-studded passage. The sea breeze carried the scent of flowers, creating an intoxicating atmosphere.
The Shadow Light crew’s red carpet time was scheduled for the middle. As the cheers from the outside grew louder, Zhen Zhen felt a rare sense of nervousness.
She had been accustomed to trying to minimize her presence since childhood. Actively appearing in public like this, and being scrutinized by the crowd, was genuinely difficult for her. Seeming to sense her emotion, Lu Jiayin moved a step closer to her side.
She adjusted Zhen Zhen’s hair and asked softly: “Will this be difficult for you?”
The reason she wanted to invite Zhen Zhen to walk the red carpet was that she wanted to share this honor with her so much. That desire was like opening up her most treasured possession, both cherishing it and urgently wishing for the world to understand its preciousness.
Now, seeing Zhen Zhen’s expression, that desire suddenly became uncertain. She was afraid Zhen Zhen would feel wronged, and afraid she would feel uncomfortable.
Zhen Zhen smiled at her: “It’s not difficult. I’m just not used to it.”
Lu Jiayin held her hand: “Then this time, let me lead you.”
She did not let go of her hand the entire way.
When the flashbulbs flickered, they resembled a grand galaxy surging from the edge of the sky. The light spread and advanced, paving a brilliant path.
Lu Jiayin naturally attracted the adoration of the cameras. Every move, every gesture, was like a dazzling, shining star. Zhen Zhen walked securely by the side of that light. Her tension unconsciously eased. This time, she didn’t avoid anyone’s gaze.
It wasn’t as hard as she imagined. There was no need to fear the scrutiny of others, no need to worry if she was fitting enough for the other person. In love, there was no need to worry about not being beautiful enough or charming enough. All she had to do was hold her hand, tightly grasped.
They walked hand-in-hand through the gaze of the crowd, black and white interwoven, and even the wind blew gently.
Following the opening ceremony was the screening of selected films. Coincidentally, Lu Jiayin’s award-winning film from a few years ago was being re-screened on the first day.
They decided immediately to stay and watch the film. The screening was held in a small auditorium near the sea. The stone bricks of the theater’s walls were laid out in a hollow floral pattern. Sunlight passed through these small holes, casting overlapping flower shadows on the ground. Lu Jiayin smiled and stepped over them, childishly saying: “Walking the flower path.”
After walking up the slight slope, the theater was located in the deeper part. A cool, dim atmosphere enveloped their bodies. The opening credits had just started playing on the large screen. The cello music was melodious, and Lu Jiayin’s captivating face appeared on the screen.
They sat down in the back row. In the darkness, only the light beam from the projector flickered slowly. The audience was silent, completely absorbed in the picturesque film scenes.
This was the second time Zhen Zhen had watched this film. However, seeing her wife’s performance on the big screen felt somewhat different from watching it at home. She then realized belatedly that this was probably the first time she had watched a movie with Lu Jiayin in a movie theater.
Recalling their marriage now, it carried a significant element of luck. If she hadn’t happened to attend that party that night, if Lu Jiayin hadn’t happened to get into her car, given their awkward personalities at the time, they would never have been fortunate enough to have crossed paths.
During the initial period of their marriage, both of them were emotionally tense, afraid to easily trespass into the other’s domain. The words they spoke often did not match their true feelings. Thus, they missed out on many of the sweet moments couples share.
They hadn’t shared a romantic, happy honeymoon, hadn’t watched movies together, hadn’t visited amusement parks, hadn’t prepared surprise birthday gifts for each other, hadn’t introduced each other to friends, hadn’t taken her to see the school she attended, their secret little hideouts when they were alone, and all the missed, urgently desired moments of sharing.
Thinking of this, Zhen Zhen looked back at the person beside her with a trace of unease.
Her gaze met a pair of gentle eyes. Lu Jiayin was also looking back at her. Seeing Zhen Zhen look her way, those peach blossom eyes curved into a smile.
“This feels like our first time at the cinema…” Her voice was very low. “I’m so happy.”
In the total darkness of the room, Zhen Zhen felt a soft warmth on the back of her hand. That hand gently rested on the back of hers, and a moment later, playfully hooked her fingertips.
“It feels like a dream…” The light and soft voice slowly flowed past her ear.
The hand grasped her fingers again, intertwining with hers. The touch was warm, skin against skin, as if she could hear their heartbeats echoing together—a kind of simple yet unique heart-fluttering sensation.
The warmth in her palm spread to her ears and gradually surged across her entire face.
Zhen Zhen suddenly felt an impulse. She secretly leaned closer to Lu Jiayin and asked: “After your work here is finished, shall we go traveling?”
No need to deliberately wait for a solemn anniversary. Let’s do it right now.
This suggestion made Lu Jiayin’s eyes light up. She quickly checked her schedule and couldn’t help but feel thrilled about Zhen Zhen’s suggestion.
The crew planned to stay in Cannes for two weeks. The awards ceremony was on the last day. Aside from a few promotional cocktail parties they had to attend together, she had three days of free time.
After confirming these three days were entirely hers to schedule, Lu Jiayin and Zhen Zhen made a simple plan and decided to take a road trip through the South of France.
One reason was that the scenery was beautiful in early summer. The second reason was that Lu Jiayin had a long-desired destination.
Her idol, the famous director Jiang Peifeng’s former residence, was in a small town in the South of France.
