Chapter 55: Song Without Words Five
A sudden loud “bang” came from outside the door. The little girl in the bedclothes shivered and burst into tears.
Hearing her daughter’s cry, Su Qing immediately woke up. She quickly got out of bed without bothering to grab a robe and hurried into her daughter’s small bedroom, gently patting her back.
“Arguing again at this hour…” She frowned slightly, comforting her daughter, “It’s alright, Xiao Jin, go back to sleep…”
The community they lived in was a resettlement housing complex on the outskirts of the city. The soundproofing was terrible; if someone spoke in the hallway, the entire building could hear the noise. That sound of shattering dishes just now was most likely the couple on the third floor arguing again.
In a few years, they had to move once Xiao Jin graduated from primary school. Otherwise, the child couldn’t even be guaranteed a quiet place to study… She wondered if they could save up enough money by then. Thinking of this, the expression on Su Qing’s face suddenly softened. Cheng Changan would be back in two days.
When she married Cheng Changan, her family was largely against it, disliking his unstable income as a race car driver and the many burdens in his family. But Su Qing married him decisively anyway.
The beginning was indeed difficult. Racing was an expensive industry, and the seasonal prize money a driver could earn was pitifully small. To make money, Cheng Changan even secretly participated in underground car races.
Such races offered the quickest money, but the risks were equally high. During the most terrifying incident, Cheng Changan collided with another car on a curve. The other driver was fatally injured, and Cheng Changan suffered a comminuted fracture of his left leg, taking over half a year before he could walk again.
After that, Su Qing firmly refused to let Cheng Changan participate in such dangerous races again. Through a friend’s recommendation, Cheng Changan joined Tianfeng Technology three years ago, becoming a driverless car navigator. This job required the driver to stay in the testing grounds most of the time, meaning very few accidents would occur.
However, Cheng Changan sometimes worried. He wasn’t highly educated and sometimes didn’t understand the complex terminology of the technicians. He was also slower to grasp new concepts than the younger generation, fearing that in a few more years, he would have to face the dilemma of being relegated to a secondary role.
“It’s the disadvantage of being uneducated. Xiao Jin must go to college later,” he said, full of anticipation. “As long as she can study, we will support her, even if we have to live on scraps.”
As long as there is hope… For some reason, Su Qing felt heavy-hearted, as if her heart was choked with tangled threads, making her breathing difficult.
She had been feeling unwell these past few days. She thought she might be tired and would feel better after a night’s sleep.
However, a sudden phone call the next morning plunged her into an abyss.
“Changan… what, what happened?” The voice on the other end of the phone was very noisy, and the intermittent static made it almost impossible for Su Qing to hear what the person was saying. “Is he injured? Is it serious?”
The caller was the race team captain, whom she had met several times. The person’s tone was heavy, only telling her that Cheng Changan had an accident and that someone from the company would contact her as soon as possible with details before abruptly hanging up.
Su Qing was a housewife and didn’t have any trustworthy friends nearby to consult. She could only wait aimlessly at home for news. At this moment, reports about Tianfeng Technology began appearing on the news and television. When she saw the ball of fire burning on the track, she felt as if the sky had collapsed.
According to the captain, the navigator in the car that crashed was Cheng Changan. She stared at the footage, watching it over and over, feeling her heart twist into a knot with every viewing.
Just as Su Qing sat stiffly in front of the television, someone knocked on her door.
The visitor was a dignified-looking middle-aged man. Flanked by several men in suits who looked like bodyguards, he used a handkerchief to cover his nose and deliberately blew his nose.
Looking at Su Qing’s worried face, Zhen Ming cleared his throat and spoke: “Mrs. Cheng, I am the head of the PR department of the Zhen Corporation. I express my condolences regarding your husband’s matter. Please accept my sympathies.”
As soon as these words were uttered, all the uneasy premonitions that had been hovering in the air fell to the ground with a “bang.” Su Qing’s nose stung. She fought back the dizziness that made her vision darken and let out a short, choked sob.
While she wept, Zhen Ming stood quietly beside her, a flicker of unease in his lowered eyes.
He didn’t give Su Qing much time to grieve. Once her emotions slightly subsided, Zhen Ming continued: “This kind of accident is something none of us wished to see. The Zhen Corporation will do its utmost to ensure the handling of the aftermath. Before that, please come with me, Mrs. Cheng.”
“Why?” Su Qing asked in a panic, “Where are you taking me?”
“Reporters will receive word and rush here soon,” Zhen Ming said steadily. “The media are like bloodsuckers; they will disregard your wishes and disturb your life. To ensure peace for you and your child, the Zhen Corporation will temporarily provide you with a new residence.”
As he spoke, his eyes slowly scanned the simple house, and he emphasized: “A better place, one more suitable for… coping with grief.”
Haitian International Airport, Arrivals Hall.
The usually bustling airport was even more crowded today. The hall was filled with reporters. They held cameras and microphones, their faces displaying an expectant look as they continuously peered towards the exit.
A traveler, puzzled by the scene, couldn’t help but ask curiously: “Are they waiting for a celebrity?”
A male reporter wearing a baseball cap scoffed: “We’re waiting for Zhen Zhen.”
Hearing the unfamiliar name, the traveler continued to ask: “Never heard of her. Is she famous?”
The baseball cap turned to look at him, with a look like he had a toothache: “Buddy, have you been disconnected from the internet? You don’t know about the big news of the driverless car explosion that killed a navigator at the American test race the other day? Zhen Zhen is the female boss of that company. She’s returning to the country today.”
The passerby looked shocked: “Damn, I really didn’t follow… How could it be so serious as to kill someone? Hasn’t that woman been arrested?”
Regarding his question, the baseball cap’s face was full of veiled meaning: “She’s a corporate heiress, a rich young lady. Even after causing such a big disaster, she can still return to the country unharmed… Different fates for different people…”
He wanted to say more, but then he heard a commotion in front. Someone shouted loudly, “They’re here, they’re here!”
This shout was like a starting gun. In an instant, everyone stretched their necks, simultaneously pointing their cameras toward the exit.
Surrounded by security personnel, a group of people walked through the exit channel. The young woman leading the group was Zhen Zhen.
She still appeared to have her usual placid expression. Her black trench coat made her skin look almost transparently pale. Upon seeing the torrent of reporters at the scene, the faces of several assistants looked heavy.
They reacted quickly, surrounding Zhen Zhen, but the reporters had already surged forward like sharks smelling blood, scrambling towards the channel exit.
“CEO Zhen! The LA Test Race Committee has announced the cancellation of Tianfeng’s results today. Does this indicate a significant hidden danger in the Lightning series?”
“Insiders point out that the accident may have been caused by Tianfeng’s independently developed algorithm system not passing safety inspections. Does this mean Cheng Changan’s death was a man-made tragedy?”
Amidst the barrage of questions, the baseball cap reporter pulled himself together. Using his tall stature, he forcefully squeezed to the front. His eyes flashed with excitement, and he shouted: “CEO Zhen, we hear you forcefully pushed the Lightning project despite opposition to fight for the inheritance of the Zhen Corporation. Is this true?”
No matter how loudly they questioned her, the person surrounded at the center of the crowd remained silent. She kept her eyelashes lowered, letting the assistants escort her out of the channel. Her usually clear and captivating eyes held a deep, profound light, revealing no emotion.
In fact, from the moment the accident happened, Zhen Zhen felt like she had fallen into a bizarre dream. The surrounding noise prevented her from finding peace, yet when she took a step, all around her was darkness.
The blaze that shot into the sky during the explosion lingered in her mind like a curse. Police inquiries and association accountability had left her exhausted these past few days. She was barely holding herself together to keep from collapsing.
That person is still waiting for her at home.
Thinking of this, Zhen Zhen desperately tried to calm herself. The surging crowd of people made their progress difficult. She was escorted by the assistants, moving step-by-step toward the exit.
Her silent attitude, in everyone’s eyes, seemed to add proof of some kind of guilt. The baseball cap male reporter at the front rolled his eyes and suddenly shouted: “Murderer!”
His voice was loud. After saying this, he quickly plunged into the crowd, trying to conceal his whereabouts. However, a voice suddenly rang out beside him: “Slanderers will die by a thousand cuts!”
Assistant Ding Ding had appeared on the periphery of the crowd at some point. Beside her stood several fully-armed young girls. They struggled to push through the crowd, running directly toward Zhen Zhen with a clear goal.
As a celebrity’s assistant, successfully breaking through a crowd of thousands was a required course. The girls looked small but were surprisingly strong. Before the reporters could react, they were scattered. Ding Ding immediately grabbed Xiao Chen and whispered: “Follow me…”
The scene became chaotic. The girls charged left and right, stirring up the crowd. Amidst the messy flow of people, Xiao Chen dragged his boss, running swiftly. Ding Ding’s chosen route seemed to somehow force a path through the throng. An MPV was already parked at the airport gate. The door hissed open the instant they reached it.
Upon seeing the person sitting in the car, and the familiar, warm smile on her face, Zhen Zhen raised her eyelashes. A faint, fleeting light appeared in her once-dim eyes.
