Chapter 52: Song Without Words Two
“I had no choice at the time,” Fu Ruyi said, clicking the “minimize” button on the screen while looking at the completely exasperated Lu Jiayin. “Between telling CEO Zhen the truth and the workload of deleting the smear post ‘Actress Suffers from Alzheimer’s,’ I naturally chose the former… Three thousand, touch!”
Lu Jiayin pulled at her hair in exasperation: “Well, you should have at least told me!”
She had been foolishly thinking she was hiding it well, when in fact, everything had long become “cute” evidence in Zhen Zhen’s eyes. Thinking of this made Lu Jiayin feel embarrassed again. She hugged the bunny Gabriel moodily, fiddling with the bow on its collar.
During the break in stacking tiles, Fu Ruyi smiled: “You were too close to the situation, but shouldn’t you thank me? If it weren’t for my brilliant decision, would you two be so deeply in love right now? My dear Teacher Lu.”
Lu Jiayin chose to ignore her manager’s teasing. At this point, Fu Ruyi remembered something else: “Is CEO Zhen going to the States after the New Year? I’ve collected several scripts for you; you can take your time to look through them…”
Lu Jiayin distractedly hummed in acknowledgment.
The driverless car test held every March in LA is regarded as the “touchstone” of the industry. For a long time during the project’s development, core autonomous system technology was firmly monopolized by American and European car manufacturers.
Three years ago, Zhen Zhen and her team launched the first Lightning series model, becoming the first successful independently developed product in China. This finally broke the long-standing absence of Asian automakers in the LA test.
Now that this year’s test was about to begin, Zhen Zhen had to personally lead the team to the United States, both as the highly anticipated representative of a domestic automaker and out of responsibility for the product itself.
However, for the young couple who had just rekindled their romance, the moment to say goodbye had arrived so soon, which inevitably led to a little melancholy.
To actively fulfill her partner’s duties, Zhen Zhen’s suitcase was packed by Lu Jiayin herself this time. The actress, who had never folded clothes for herself, specially consulted her assistant and spent a great deal of time organizing the suitcase to a satisfactory degree.
“I just remembered I forgot to put in Band-Aids!” Lu Jiayin rushed into the cloakroom and dragged out the heavy suitcase. “Just in case you need them…”
This was the fifth time in as many days. Zhen Zhen stood quietly by, watching her take out the neatly folded clothes one by one, put the Band-Aids in, and then stuff everything back in.
Her movements were far from skilled, even bordering on clumsy. But Lu Jiayin insisted on doing it herself. Perhaps because she had put too many things in, the last jacket simply wouldn’t go back into its original position. She tried to cram it in for a long time, finally having to drop her hands in frustration.
“Why won’t the clothes fit…” She suddenly felt incredibly useless and looked tearfully at Zhen Zhen. “Wuu…”
Seeing this, Zhen Zhen sighed softly in her heart and reached out to embrace Lu Jiayin.
“The race is in two weeks, March 12th. Including the follow-up qualification applications and other procedures, I’ll be back by the 16th at the latest,” she also felt reluctant to leave Lu Jiayin. In the past, both of them were often busy with work, and spending time apart was normal, but now, this separation felt especially difficult and unwelcome.
I really want to be with her all the time. She kissed Lu Jiayin’s forehead, trying to cheer her up: “Is there anything you want? I’ll buy it for you then.”
Lu Jiayin shook her head, wrapping her arms tightly around Zhen Zhen’s waist.
Even though their lingering time was precious, when Assistant Xiao Chen knocked on the door for the third time, Zhen Zhen had to let go of Lu Jiayin. Just as she reached out to grab the suitcase, she saw Lu Jiayin’s eyes instantly turn red again.
Seeing this, Zhen Zhen’s expression couldn’t help but dim. She picked up the bunny doll, which had been changed into a new outfit, from the sofa and placed it in Lu Jiayin’s arms.
Since Gabriel arrived home, she had hired a tailor specializing in doll clothes to make many new outfits for it. Initially, Lu Jiayin thought Zhen Zhen was making up for not having played with dolls when she was a child, but she gradually realized that the clothes on the bunny were eerily similar to her own.
For instance, the little white cotton jacket and bunny-ear hat Gabriel was wearing now looked quite familiar.
“Gabriel will stay and keep you company,” Zhen Zhen seriously tucked the doll into her arms. “I’ll be back as soon as possible.”
Lu Jiayin held the little bunny, managing to hold back her tears.
Not wanting her to make the return trip alone, Zhen Zhen insisted that Lu Jiayin not take her to the airport and instead chose to say goodbye at the door. She handed the luggage to Xiao Chen and turned back to remind her anxiously: “Ding Ding will come to keep you company later. Remember to open the door for her.”
Lu Jiayin nodded.
Zhen Zhen then stroked her hair and smiled before turning to leave.
The entrance elevator was directly opposite the hallway door. The indicator light blinked and quickly reached their floor. Just as Lu Jiayin stared blankly at Zhen Zhen’s departing back, she saw Zhen Zhen suddenly turn back.
“I wanted to do this last time I dropped you off at the set.”
The fragrance of perfume gently approached. Zhen Zhen cupped Lu Jiayin’s face and gently placed a kiss on her cheek.
The elevator door chimed “ding,” starting to descend with the people inside. The person left in the hallway stood motionless, her heart beating sweetly and fiercely, a rhythm that did not subside for a long time.
I feel like I’m starting to miss her already.
She wasn’t the only one feeling lost. Zhen Zhen remained silent after getting into the car. Assistant Xiao Chen cleverly sensed his boss’s low mood and tactfully left her alone to process her feelings.
Since the relationship between the boss and the boss’s wife improved, the boss finally started showing the rich emotions appropriate for her age. Xiao Chen had traveled with Zhen Zhen countless times before, and she was always poised and decisive. This was the first time he had seen the boss clearly show discomfort with separation.
Zhen Zhen’s low spirits continued until they reached the airport. Before getting out of the car, she closed her eyes, took several deep breaths, and then slowly opened her eyes, regaining her usual calm and placid expression.
Their team going to the United States this time was quite large. In addition to Zhen Zhen, there were relevant people from Tianfeng’s technical and marketing departments, team staff, totaling twenty to thirty people.
Cheng Changan, as the chief navigator for Lightning-S, was naturally part of the team. Su Qing brought her daughter to send him off. In front of so many people, she still seemed a little shy, only daring to gaze warmly at her husband.
Xiao Jin, however, clung to her father’s hand, asking expectantly: “Will you really buy me a Mickey Mouse water bottle?”
“Daddy is going to work…” Su Qing quietly reminded her daughter. “You shouldn’t be so willful and bother him.”
Cheng Changan smiled genuinely and rubbed his daughter’s head with his large hand: “It’s okay. They say we’ll have two days off after the race. I’ll find someone to ask around then. I can definitely buy you Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and whatever else.”
He looked at his wife and said apologetically: “I’ll be away for over half a month this time. The elderly and the child at home will all depend on you to worry about… It’s my fault for not being more capable of earning money, making you suffer alongside me…”
Su Qing smiled faintly, touched by her husband’s concern. She felt embarrassed to say intimate things in front of so many people, so she could only whisper: “I’ve never complained about you. As long as… we both work hard, life will get better and better… You take care of yourself while you’re away.”
Hearing his wife’s words, Cheng Changan’s eyes brightened, and he nodded firmly: “Don’t worry.”
The couple spoke in low voices. At this moment, the girl from the marketing department who was leading the team came over. She handed the boarding pass and passport back to Cheng Changan, looked at the little girl beside him, and added: “CEO Zhen said everyone can wait in the lounge. They’ve also prepared chocolates and yogurt there. Grab some for the child.”
Cheng Changan nodded his thanks. Just as he was about to take his family to the lounge, Su Qing stopped her husband: “With so many of you, and a long-haul flight ahead, we shouldn’t keep imposing on CEO Zhen. I’ll take Xiao Jin and head home now.”
She mustered all her courage, gently squeezed her husband’s hand, and then, holding her daughter’s hand, left in the direction they had arrived from.
Cheng Changan looked somewhat longingly at his wife and daughter’s retreating figures. Little Jia, a younger colleague from the team, smiled and nudged him: “Brother Cheng, stop staring. Sis-in-law and the others are long gone.”
The bachelors without anyone to send them off burst into friendly laughter. Amidst the cheer, Cheng Changan retracted his gaze. Little Jia scratched his head and offered him a bottle of mineral water ingratiatingly.
“Brother Cheng, drink some water… I just got this from the lounge. It’s an imported brand,” Little Jia was a new employee who joined last year, and it was his first time flying to the States, so he was understandably excited. He subconsciously leaned closer to Cheng Changan, whom he interacted with most often, and whispered, “I heard them say this mineral water sells for dozens of yuan per bottle at the supermarket…”
It was a glass bottle of mineral water, cool to the touch. Cheng Changan was also surprised by the price: “A bottle of water costs that much?”
He regretted not listening to the young lady and shamelessly taking some snacks for his daughter.
While he was vaguely thinking, Little Jia had already unscrewed the bottle, novelty evident as he took a few gulps, smacking his lips to taste it: “It does seem sweeter than the water we usually drink… Sigh, it’s great to be rich… I even ran into CEO Zhen in the lounge just now. She told me to take as much of this expensive snack and water as I wanted.”
Hearing Little Jia’s words, the team captain nearby chuckled: “Silly boy, CEO Zhen is a rich young lady born with a silver spoon. These things seem expensive to you, but they’re ordinary to her.”
Little Jia sighed enviously: “It’s really great to be rich… I can’t even imagine a life like CEO Zhen’s. I’d be satisfied if I could live like them…”
He pointed toward the marketing department employees gathered a few steps away. Compared to the team’s casual attire, they were undoubtedly dressed much more formally, and their expressions also appeared more composed and content.
Cheng Changan also glanced over there. He clearly didn’t dare to dream of a life like that. He hadn’t received much formal education, starting work in his teens to make a living. Fortunately… his daughter was a smart little girl. If he worked hard to earn money, perhaps he could also afford to send Xiao Jin abroad to study someday. Then, she could have a respectable life like these people.
As he thought of his daughter, the smile on his face grew a little softer.
