The Ex-Wife-to-Be Is Acting Weird After Losing Her Memory - Chapter 50
Chapter 50: Lullaby Six
The air at the dining table became slightly stagnant.
The moment those words left her mouth, Lu Jiayin actually regretted it a little. She watched Zhen Zhen’s silent expression, her heart panicked, wanting to make amends but not knowing where to start.
“What I mean is… every bit of the past is real, and you can’t just discard it,” she thought for a moment and explained awkwardly. “We should remember the past, look forward to the future… and, well, that’s the only way to fully welcome the new year.”
Too stupid.
She finished the absurd statement with difficulty, feeling a bit mortified herself. Fortunately, Zhen Zhen listened quietly without revealing any expression. Only after she finished did Zhen Zhen curve her eyes and agree: “Mm, my wife is right.”
After saying that, she raised her wine glass and gently clinked it against the glass Lu Jiayin had just emptied, then finished her own drink.
Because neither of them had a great tolerance for alcohol, they had chosen a crisp white wine for dinner. Even so, a blush still rose on Zhen Zhen’s face after finishing the glass. She frowned, waiting for the slight tipsiness to fade before looking up and smiling at Lu Jiayin.
Seeing that smile, Lu Jiayin felt her heart give a “pop,” like a tiny firework exploding. Immediately afterward, Zhen Zhen made an unexpected move. She suddenly got up from her seat and moved directly to the chair closer to Lu Jiayin.
As she leaned closer, the familiar, faint scent of her perfume also permeated the air. Lu Jiayin’s eyelashes fluttered, and she asked softly: “What are you doing?”
“I want to be closer to you,” Zhen Zhen looked at her thick, long eyelashes and replied with a smile. “Is that okay?”
Sensing a certain warmth approaching, Lu Jiayin pursed her lips, unsure how to respond.
Zhen Zhen took her silence as consent and moved the bowl and chopsticks that were previously on the opposite side over.
The distance that had been created by her previous words was closed again. Even after sitting down next to her, Zhen Zhen moved her chair until the two were almost pressed together, stopping only when she was satisfied.
“This is the first time the two of us are having New Year’s Eve dinner together…” Her voice was very gentle, and she said with extreme sincerity, “I feel very happy, and I hope you are happy too.”
Lu Jiayin listened to her words silently, and after a long while, whispered: “I am happy too.”
Although a small sense of awkwardness still lingered deep inside, when Zhen Zhen smiled and handed her a peeled shrimp, Lu Jiayin still instinctively opened her mouth obediently and ate the shrimp with an “Aww.”
This act of feeding was a silent understanding developed over the past few months, a scenario that would have been absolutely impossible for the two of them before. However, as Lu Jiayin bit into the springy shrimp meat, she didn’t want to admit that this intimate, clingy behavior was perhaps more in line with her inner, awkward, and secret expectations.
Well… it’s probably better not to disappoint Zhen Zhen’s carefully prepared New Year’s Eve dinner, right? She quickly convinced herself and continued to comfortably enjoy the feeding.
Seeing her eat with such enthusiasm, Zhen Zhen never stopped working throughout the entire dinner. She first peeled a small bowl of shrimp for her, then personally selected a piece of fish, carefully removed the bones, and finally cleaned all the green onions and ginger out of the beef before placing them on the plate in front of Lu Jiayin.
“Don’t just prepare things for me, you eat too.” Lu Jiayin paused her chopsticks when she belatedly realized she was the only one being fed at the table. She then saw that Zhen Zhen had given her the best part of almost every dish.
Realizing this, Lu Jiayin felt even more strongly that she was not a competent partner. She shamefully picked up a piece of spare rib and placed it in Zhen Zhen’s plate as a form of compensation.
Zhen Zhen smiled at her and ate the spare rib very carefully.
Seeing this scene, Lu Jiayin immediately crossed out the option of “confessing after dinner” from her mind.
She felt terribly guilty.
Her former self was truly the epitome of aloofness, rarely speaking sweet words. Even their few interactions often ended in awkwardness or regret due to her inexplicable self-esteem. Although she later determined to follow the Sweetheart Jiayin persona, upon closer reflection, aside from becoming more skilled at being affectionate, the things she had truly done for Zhen Zhen were very few.
Lu Jiayin, who had been relegated to the sofa to eat fruit after dinner by Zhen Zhen, thought gravely that since it was New Year’s Eve, she should fulfill some of her partner duties and make Zhen Zhen happy.
With that thought… her soft, boneless body leaned toward the edge of the sofa, sighing slightly with a troubled expression. A faint look of distress clouded her watery peach-blossom eyes.
The more Lu Jiayin thought about it, the more she doubted herself. Had she ever successfully cheered Zhen Zhen up? Why, no matter how hard she tried to remember, was it mostly Zhen Zhen comforting her?
Before she could come up with a good idea, as the midnight bell for the New Year approached, congratulatory messages from family and friends began to pour into her phone. Lu Jiayin had no choice but to push the matter aside and begin replying to the well-wishes.
Old Master Zhen, vacationing on the South Island, sent her a big red envelope, instructing them to enjoy themselves. Her mother, who was usually indifferent to holidays, only replied with “New Year, New Progress” and then went silent. After replying to the greetings from the elders, Lu Jiayin clicked open the messages to respond to her friends one by one.
Her boss, co-stars and directors, and close work partners like Fu Ruyi and Ding Ding… Looking at the long list, Lu Jiayin suddenly realized that she seemed to have sent and received significantly more New Year’s greetings this year than in previous years.
Even Qi Yongshan had proactively sent her a message, colorful and attached with many cute emoticons. Lu Jiayin chose a relatively rich-sounding congratulatory message in comparison and sent it back.
A few seconds later, Qi Yongshan immediately replied: You actually mass-sent me a greeting??? [So Mad][So Mad] Lu Jiayin was confused: Wasn’t the one you sent me mass-sent?
She pulled up the message and read it carefully again. Only then did she realize that Qi Yongshan had included the character “Jia” in every sentence of the blessing, along with emoji symbols. It was actually an original message.
But Lu Jiayin was truly bad at drafting this kind of personalized message. After thinking for a long time, she had no choice but to send the person a red envelope.
This time, Qi Yongshan simply didn’t reply to her.
Lu Jiayin waited a few minutes, guessing that given Qi Yongshan’s personality, she wouldn’t recover for a while. After quickly replying to the remaining few messages, she had a brilliant idea.
She could send Zhen Zhen a romantic New Year’s blessing.
The New Year’s greeting Ding Ding had sent her earlier was particularly creative; the text was arranged into a big heart shape, perfect for cheering up Zhen Zhen. Thinking of this, Lu Jiayin immediately found the message, copied it, and began to re-edit the text.
Inspired by Qi Yongshan’s message, she also racked her brains to find a bunch of auspicious blessings homophonic with Zhen Zhen’s name, stuffing them all in.
After finishing the greeting, Lu Jiayin confidently pressed the “Send” button.
“Huh?” The neatly arranged blessing suddenly broke lines after being sent. The text-arranged heart shape was instantly in disarray. Lu Jiayin held her phone, anxiously tapping the screen a few times, realizing she couldn’t change it.
Just as she was frustratedly pressing down on the chat box to recall the message, Zhen Zhen walked out of the kitchen and naturally stood beside her: “What are you doing?”
Lu Jiayin’s hand trembled.
Zhen Zhen quietly looked at the messy blessing on the screen, silent for a few seconds: “Is this for me?”
Lu Jiayin: …
She didn’t want to admit it at all.
Seeing her remain silent, Zhen Zhen picked up her own phone from the other side of the sofa. The message Lu Jiayin sent her appeared at the top of the chat box. She read the blessing silently, the corner of her mouth involuntarily lifting into a slight smile.
“It was supposed to have a better shape…” Lu Jiayin’s eyelashes fluttered, and she said sadly, “Don’t look at it. I’ll just send you a red envelope instead?”
She resignedly reopened the chat box, only to see “The other party is typing…” displayed on the screen.
Seeing this prompt, Lu Jiayin silently looked back at Zhen Zhen, wondering what she would reply.
Zhen Zhen looked down at her phone, as if contemplating something. After another moment, her fair fingertip pressed against the screen, lightly typing out a few characters.
Almost simultaneously, Lu Jiayin heard her phone vibrate, and a sentence immediately appeared on the screen.
Suddenly, a brilliant display of lights flashed outside the window.
The New Year’s fireworks had begun.
Accompanied by the loud “boom, boom” sounds, magenta, crimson, golden orange, indigo blue… The dazzling lights illuminated the entire sky. Countless fireworks soared and scattered, painting grand and beautiful patterns.
Lu Jiayin gazed blankly at the fireworks. The floor-to-ceiling window was like a giant picture frame. In its upper part was the magnificent sky engulfed in fireworks, and in the lower part were the equally bright, clear lights of countless homes, reflecting the lively sounds of the human world.
The screen in her hand was also lit up, displaying the New Year’s greeting Zhen Zhen had replied with:
“Happy New Year. I love you too.”
The New Year that belonged to them had begun.
Amidst the loud and festive sounds, Lu Jiayin casually tossed her phone onto the sofa. Her fair, soft little feet stepped onto the carpet, and she walked toward Zhen Zhen step by step.
Her gait was graceful and light as she moved to stand in front of her.
Zhen Zhen stood by the window, habitually reaching out to embrace her.
Lu Jiayin suddenly realized that compared to the indifference in her eyes when they first met, Zhen Zhen’s gaze held much more tenderness. The tenderness was hidden deep in her eyes, only discoverable when one was very close. Those clear, bright eyes, like stars on a night sky, stared unblinkingly at her.
Lu Jiayin raised her finger and placed it on Zhen Zhen’s warm, gently rising chest.
She had long since been honest with her about her feelings. That beating heart. It was just that at the time, she used the excuse of amnesia to conceal the part of herself too shy to express and quietly drew closer to that heart.
Her slightly cool fingertip was grasped by the other hand. Familiar body warmth soothed her finger, gently wrapping her hand in her palm.
Looking at the person in front of her, Lu Jiayin’s red lips slightly parted. She slowly and gently clasped Zhen Zhen’s wrist in return.
“Zhen Zhen, Happy New Year,” she whispered softly, word by word.
