Chapter 44: Symphonic Poem Seven
Despite her efforts to delay, Lu Jiayin was urged by Zhen Zhen to start her return journey after dinner.
Snow was falling lightly again. Zhen Zhen was uneasy about her driving back alone, so she specifically requested the Zhen family driver to come during dinner to drive her back to the film set.
Just as Lu Jiayin thought they would say goodbye, Zhen Zhen, holding the little rabbit Gabriel, naturally got into the back seat, giving her a gentle smile.
“I’ll go with you to see you off,” she said softly. “It’s not that far anyway. We’ll come back after dropping you off at the set.”
She was reluctant to leave her like this, to end the day so soon. Zhen Zhen had this thought as soon as she saw Lu Jiayin get in the car.
Since Zhen Zhen’s trip was impromptu and to avoid keeping them waiting, the driver, upon receiving the call, drove a newly acquired Cullinan from the company garage nearby. The driver thoughtfully raised the partition behind the seats, giving the couple a quiet, private space.
When the partition went up, both felt a little shy. They hadn’t planned on doing anything specific, but looking at the suddenly sealed space, Zhen Zhen leaned in, moving toward Lu Jiayin.
Before she could reach the red lips so close to her, a phone rang, breaking the intimate atmosphere. Lu Jiayin looked into Zhen Zhen’s eyes and apologetically pulled out her phone.
The caller was Fu Ruyi. The manager’s clear, bright voice carried through the earpiece: “Lu Jiayin, I think you need to quickly figure out a way to placate your CEO Zhen. A batch of on-set photos from Dark Light was posted today, and your CP with Qi Yongshan has blown up!”
As the filming of Dark Light neared completion, online discussions increased daily. A few days ago, several fan groups organized visits to the set. The posted photos showed an interaction between Lu Jiayin and Qi Yongshan on set.
In the picture, both were dressed similarly, wearing long black down jackets over their costumes. However, Lu Jiayin wore hers casually draped over her shoulders, standing in front of the camera looking at the playback, while Qi Yongshan was bundled up like a cotton ball, leaning tightly into Lu Jiayin’s embrace, looking somewhat like she was acting spoiled.
Netizens immediately declared they “were obsessed.”
[I used to not like Qi Yongshan; I thought she was too cutesy. Now I can’t handle it, the sweet, cutesy girl is amazing!] [This is seriously the most wicked CP I’ve ever shipped. Logic tells me it’s impossible, but for some reason, they’re so shippable!] Lu Jiayin looked at the link Fu Ruyi sent her, then glanced at Zhen Zhen, who hadn’t spoken since earlier and remained quietly seated. She awkwardly cleared her throat: “I can explain…”
That long black down jacket, jokingly called “couple wear” by gossipers, was practically owned by every actor on the set. Furthermore, that day, Qi Yongshan was moving awkwardly because she was wearing too many layers. When they squeezed together in front of the camera to watch the playback, she accidentally lost her balance and fell onto Lu Jiayin. Qi Yongshan instantly sprang up at lightning speed. It was a momentary instant, and she genuinely didn’t know how fans managed to capture it.
Zhen Zhen looked at her calmly.
She sat very properly, her hands resting on her knees, holding a fluffy rabbit doll. She appeared emotionless, but Lu Jiayin knew that she was definitely not as calm as she looked on the surface.
This person only revealed her deeply buried possessiveness and emotions when drunk and mentally relaxed. Now that they were both sober, with Zhen Zhen’s personality, she would never let Lu Jiayin sense any sign of distress.
But if she didn’t quickly placate her now, and with her being away for the next few days, who knows how long Zhen Zhen would silently sulk. Thinking of this, Lu Jiayin turned and actively wrapped her arms around Zhen Zhen’s neck.
The last time she had sat on her like this was during their follow-up hospital visit, but the driver wasn’t in the car then, knowing they needed to talk… Lu Jiayin’s ears flushed slightly. The partition separating the front and back compartments became her courage. She leaned forward and kissed the person opposite her.
She still felt incredibly nervous. The moment her lips touched Zhen Zhen’s, the other person seemed momentarily stunned. But immediately after, Zhen Zhen did not kiss her back as she usually did. Instead, she gently tilted her head back and closed her eyes.
The porcelain-white jaw drew a graceful arc. Her red lips were slightly pursed, looking as if she were waiting for Lu Jiayin to continue.
Lu Jiayin’s heart pounded like a drum. The feeling that surfaced after the nervousness was shyness. The car was driving smoothly, but the thought that another person was just one wall away caused an immediate, unhindered surge of awkwardness, like stealing a moment of affection.
She trembled slightly, leaning forward and hugging Zhen Zhen’s neck, pressing her soft lips against hers again.
A light, scented kiss landed on Zhen Zhen’s lips. Lu Jiayin gently pressed her lips there. This time, before she could continue, the light before her suddenly dimmed, and a hand wrapped around her waist.
Zhen Zhen had put the little rabbit down at some point. She embraced Lu Jiayin with one hand, trapping her between her embrace and the car seat. With the other hand, she gently cradled the back of Lu Jiayin’s head, pushing her red lips closer, and claimed that softness.
The sweet kiss carried a tingling, fine electrical current that made her limbs go numb. Lu Jiayin faintly moaned, nearly collapsing into Zhen Zhen’s arms. Although the kiss was not very deep, it still aroused her passion.
After lingering for a while, Zhen Zhen finally released her. She helped Lu Jiayin adjust her slightly messy hair and asked with a smile: “Were you… trying to appease me just now?”
Lu Jiayin’s face still held a blush. Hearing this, she shot Zhen Zhen a captivating glare: “Yes, I was afraid you’d go back and ruin another carpet because of me and someone else’s ‘lesbian intimacy’ drama.”
Zhen Zhen looked at her innocently: “Actually, I know the photo isn’t real.”
She admitted that she was indeed unhappy when she saw the photo. Even though she knew nothing could genuinely happen between Qi Yongshan and Lu Jiayin, that subtle jealousy still involuntarily bubbled up, and she desperately needed to be appeased by Lu Jiayin to feel better.
But after thinking about it, she decided to tell Lu Jiayin: “That actress in your crew, Qi Yongshan, used to date Zhen Ming. I found out that New Energy has some involvement with Zhen Ming, and I’ve already spoken with Director Long. New Energy will withdraw its investment from Dark Light.”
The amount of information in this statement was overwhelming. Lu Jiayin’s eyes widened in surprise: “So Qi Yongshan was with him…”
She had heard some vague rumors that Qi Yongshan was dating a wealthy man, which was why she had become particularly arrogant and ostentatious lately. But finding out it was Zhen Ming still surprised Lu Jiayin.
She had interacted with Zhen Ming a few times. He relied on his position in the Public Relations department to cozy up to many second-generation figures in the entertainment industry. He had also repeatedly invited her to the Zhen family’s annual meeting under the guise of kinship. Lu Jiayin disliked his personality and had always made excuses to decline. She hadn’t expected him to be Qi Yongshan’s non-celebrity boyfriend.
“So Qi Yongshan was drunk last time because she broke up with Zhen Ming…” she murmured. “I think Zhen Ming… isn’t really a good match. It’s good they broke up.”
Zhen Zhen stroked her hair: “The New Energy situation is complicated. I suspect their listing documents are fraudulent and I’m worried it might affect Dark Light‘s promotion, so I’ll first have Director Long sever investment ties with them. After that, I’ll figure out how to persuade Brother Ming to withdraw.”
Once the Dark Light production team was completely separated from New Energy, Zhen Zhen hadn’t planned to intervene in Zhen Ming’s other reckless behaviors, unless she was worried about upsetting Grandpa.
In recent years, Grandpa had begun to suffer from common elderly ailments. While there were no major issues for now, he was gradually losing his previous decisive energy. Zhen Zhen was afraid that if Zhen Ming got into trouble at this time, it would affect Grandpa’s health.
As they chatted quietly, the car had already reached its destination. Lu Jiayin saw Ding Ding and others waiting at the gate. She turned and kissed Zhen Zhen’s cheek, whispering: “I’m leaving now, okay?”
She stepped out of the car as lightly as a little rabbit and quickly ran towards Ding Ding and the others. The sharp-eyed young assistant exclaimed quietly: “Wow, Sister Jiayin, you were only gone for a day, and your car turned into a Cullinan!”
Lu Jiayin turned and waved at the car still parked by the roadside, smiling: “Lower your voice. It’s Zhen Zhen’s car. She was just dropping me off.”
She never liked showing off her wealth in her marketing, and she had only asked Zhen Zhen to park at the gate to avoid attracting too much attention. Ding Ding stuck out her tongue and escorted her into the park area, muttering: “Sister, you are just too low-key, unlike some people who would happily make a hot search for buying a bag, in 360 degrees.”
At this point, she became indignant again: “Qi Yongshan is using you to stir up CP drama again! Now you even have a CP name, called ‘Ren Qi’ CP… Honestly, if she really knows you are someone else’s wife, she shouldn’t shamelessly try to link herself to you!”
The young assistant had been upset about this all day. The gossipers were becoming more determined than ever. Since the last time the topic was removed from the hot search, the fervor for shipping the CP had only grown. Taking advantage of the recent on-set photos, they once again pushed the CP to the top of the hot search rankings.
Worse still, the scale was even larger this time. They had been trying to delete the posts for hours without success, while Qi Yongshan wore a dark, “keep away” face, clearly intentionally dragging out the situation to gain exposure.
Lu Jiayin recalled what Zhen Zhen had just told her and pursed her lips: “Just delete them slowly. It’s not real anyway. Think of it as generating buzz for the movie.”
Ding Ding opened her mouth, wanting to say something more, but her gaze fell on someone appearing in the corridor, and she gave an annoyed “hmph,” remaining silent.
The person walking toward them was none other than Qi Yongshan. Compared to her previously high-spirited appearance, Qi Yongshan had clearly suffered a major blow in recent days. Not only had she lost a lot of weight, but she also looked very haggard.
Her oval face was so thin it was almost sunken, making her large eyes stand out more. She silently watched Lu Jiayin’s group. Uncharacteristically, she didn’t provoke them but moved aside, intending to let them pass first.
This was unprecedented treatment.
Lu Jiayin stopped when she reached Qi Yongshan.
She hadn’t planned on saying much, but for some reason, seeing Qi Yongshan in this state sparked a sense of indignation in her. Even though their relationship had never been amicable, she still spoke up.
“Did you see today’s hot search?” she asked earnestly. “Fans are saying that Qi Yongshan has finally woken up and embarked on an incredibly correct path.”
Upon hearing this, not only was Qi Yongshan stunned, but Ding Ding and the other assistants also widened their eyes in surprise.
What does their celebrity mean? Is she publicly endorsing the ‘Ren Qi CP’ as politically correct?
Seeing the strange expressions on everyone’s faces, Lu Jiayin realized her words were problematic. She immediately clarified: “I mean, they’re saying you look beautiful when you focus wholeheartedly on your career! So, don’t worry about those emotional gains and losses. Focus on doing your main job well!”
She dumped the entire thought out in one breath, then dropped the final line: “Think about it yourself.” Then, without saying more, she quickly walked away with her assistants.
The bewildered Qi Yongshan remained standing where she was, quietly savoring Lu Jiayin’s words, unable to regain her composure for a long time.
“What’s the big deal…” The petite actress muttered softly after a long while, though her face was unconsciously heating up.
“It’s that annoying Lu Jiayin again. Whether I look beautiful focusing on my career or not… why, why does it matter what you say?”
