The Ex-Wife-to-Be Is Acting Weird After Losing Her Memory - Chapter 4
Chapter 4: Prelude Three
This time, she didn’t get her wish.
Inside the large bathroom, the sound of “whooshing” water gently stirred. Zhen Zhen took a bath bomb from the mirrored cabinet. The bath bomb quickly dissolved into foam in the water, and the fragrance of roses spread with the warm steam.
After confirming the water temperature was suitable, she turned to Lu Jiayin: “You can wash now.”
Lu Jiayin had been standing by the door, watching Zhen Zhen’s appearance, which was as if she were facing a formidable enemy, and couldn’t help but curve her lips: “Are you really not going to help me?”
As she said this, she used her one good right hand to press on the bathrobe’s sash, conveniently loosening a knot. The garment, which was already precariously hanging on her shoulders, slipped down a little further. Zhen Zhen immediately averted her gaze: “I think you can manage on your own.”
Lu Jiayin noticed a subtle blush creeping up her earlobe, like an unfurled underglaze, merging with her rigorously restrained demeanor and creating a subtle sense of conflict. She stared at the blush for a few seconds, only able to say with regret: “Alright then.”
The moment the bathroom door closed, the bathrobe dropped to the floor. A pair of fair, delicate legs stepped forward and leisurely slid into the oversized jacuzzi tub.
The room was filled with an alluring scent. As Lu Jiayin relaxed and immersed herself in the hot water, she pondered her current situation. She could tell that Zhen Zhen’s attitude towards her was not completely devoid of emotion, but her eyes always held a kind of wariness, as if… she was afraid Lu Jiayin might hurt her.
This realization made Lu Jiayin feel a little heavy-hearted. She tried hard to recall what had happened in the past, but her mind remained blank. This feeling of missing something was like a kite that couldn’t reach the ground, only to be blown further and further away, unable to grasp the thread back home.
“I won’t think about it anymore,” she lifted her head from the water. “First, I need to get along well with my wife and try to earn some new impression points.”
Having made up her mind, she used her right hand to brace herself against the edge of the bathtub to get out, but she ultimately overestimated her strength. Before she could lift her body, her feet slipped, and she fell back into the water with a “plop.”
Zhen Zhen heard the strange movement about half an hour after Lu Jiayin entered the bathroom.
The sound was like something rhythmically tapping the tiles, a tap, and another tap, carrying the anxious frustration of a small squirrel trying to crack a pine nut.
She hesitated for a moment, then walked to the bathroom door and politely knocked: “Lu Jiayin, are you okay?”
The answer she received was Lu Jiayin’s soft, yet always slightly proud voice: “I’m fine. Just tapping the bathtub for fun, I guess?”
Hearing this reply, Zhen Zhen said nothing more, only continuing to stand quietly by the door. After waiting for about a minute, Lu Jiayin seemed to sigh: “Wife, save me. I think I twisted my ankle.”
The person in the bathtub was slumped over the edge, looking defeated. Her wet, long hair was spread out, half clinging to her fair back, and half submerged in the water. Lu Jiayin was slightly hunched over, her face flushed from the steam, her eyelashes heavy with mist, making her eyes look a little hazy.
This is so embarrassing… Lu Jiayin thought gloomily. She must look terrible right now. The moment she fell, she tried to save herself, but after much effort, she failed and ended up breaking out in a sweat again.
Zhen Zhen looked at the person in the bathtub and pondered for a moment. She said in a comforting tone: “Don’t struggle. I’ll pick you up.”
She rolled up her sleeves, pulled a large bath towel from the rack, and wrapped Lu Jiayin entirely in it first. As she predicted, Lu Jiayin had always been strict with her weight management. The weight in her arms, even with the soaked towel, was still easily lifted.
As she walked, she subconsciously gauged the weight of the person in her arms: “You’re too thin.”
Lu Jiayin was already mortified and felt even more sensitive when she heard Zhen Zhen’s comment. She might be thin, but hadn’t the necessary parts grown? Did Zhen Zhen think she wasn’t… voluptuous enough? Was that why she was so restrained… Thinking of this, she turned her body away in embarrassment and annoyance: “I asked you to help me. Who asked you to comment on my weight?”
“Should I stop caring then?” Zhen Zhen said and made a move to let go. Lu Jiayin was so startled that she immediately reached out to hook her arm around Zhen Zhen’s neck. Neither of them had anticipated the other’s sudden movement. In the chaos, they lost balance, but luckily, Zhen Zhen reacted quickly, twisting outward as they fell, so they landed squarely on the master bedroom bed.
Lu Jiayin landed entirely on top of Zhen Zhen. One of Zhen Zhen’s hands was still protectively around her waist. The heat from her palm made Lu Jiayin’s entire body tense up. She frantically tried to climb off but accidentally hit her injured left hand. After a cry of pain, she collapsed heavily onto Zhen Zhen’s chest again.
“Hiss… at least you’re not heavy.” This time, Zhen Zhen distinctly inhaled sharply. She was about to say something else, but she felt the person in her arms was clearly extremely upset. The soft, warm body trembled slightly, as if it would melt if touched again.
She said no more, using both hands to firmly grip the slender waist she could span with her hands. She quickly reversed their positions. From the elevated view, Lu Jiayin’s face was flushed, her almond-shaped eyes moist, looking as if she might burst into tears at any moment. Looking down, her rosy lips were unconsciously parted. Zhen Zhen shifted her gaze away.
She had never seen Lu Jiayin so expressive.
“I’ll go get you an ice pack to cold compress your ankle,” she hastily mumbled before turning and leaving the room.
Due to the accident and the sweat caused by the fright, Lu Jiayin developed a fever in the middle of the night. Zhen Zhen felt her forehead, which was burning hot, and made a quick decision: “I’m taking you to the hospital…”
Before she could grab her phone, a hand with startling heat reached out from under the covers and weakly grabbed hers.
“No, we can’t go to the hospital…” Although feverish and slightly muddled, Lu Jiayin vaguely remembered her identity. “I just got discharged today. If I go back, the media will likely catch it.”
Fu Ruyi had instructed her to minimize exposure to avoid the media finding out about her amnesia.
Zhen Zhen recalled that whenever she and Lu Jiayin went out, this person would insist on restyling her hair if it was slightly messy. Asking her to go to the hospital looking so disheveled was indeed a bit much.
“Alright, we won’t go to the hospital.” After some thought, she agreed.
After settling Lu Jiayin in the bedroom, she returned to the living room and placed a phone call.
The phone rang several times before it was answered. After clearly hearing her question, the person on the other end was silent for a moment, then asked with a hint of disbelief: “Zhen Zhen, do you remember what I study? Do you really have to call me out of the lab in the middle of the night for something like a common cold?”
“I apologize,” Zhen Zhen waited for her to finish before continuing: “But I need you to tell me now how to care for a cold patient.”
The person on the other end was stumped. After a moment, she said: “Alright, alright, let me think… For a cold, you need to first distinguish if it’s viral or wind-cold…”
The chattering voice went on for several minutes. Zhen Zhen listened intently, standing very straight. When the person finally finished giving instructions, she couldn’t help but ask out of curiosity: “Little Senior Sister, I really must ask out of turn, who are you making this call for…”
“My wife.” Zhen Zhen answered briefly, and before the person on the other end could start screaming, she decisively ended the call.
After hanging up, she reviewed the steps given to her and then went to the kitchen for an ice pack.
According to the other person, cold patients are usually very weak, so she only needed to lower the fever, replenish fluids, and let the patient rest well.
But Lu Jiayin was clearly not an obedient patient.
Although she was so sick she barely had the strength to open her eyes, she kept finding fault.
First, the ice pack was too cold and made her forehead uncomfortable. Then, her wrist injury was unbearable, and she asked for a massage. A few minutes later, she spoke in a hoarse voice: “Plain water tastes bland. Can you add some honey for me?”
Her voice was soft like a kitten, whimpering and complaining. Although it was bothersome, it made it impossible to heartlessly ignore her.
Lu Jiayin exhausted Zhen Zhen. She had no experience caring for others and could only use all her patience until she finally coaxed Lu Jiayin to quiet down and obediently go to sleep with the towel-wrapped ice pack on her head.
Less than two minutes later, the person on the bed quietly requested: “Wife, I feel so bad. Can you hold me?”
Before Zhen Zhen could respond, Lu Jiayin reached out her relatively unharmed right hand, weakly and accurately touching her.
The hand was very hot, softly resting on Zhen Zhen’s side, so light it felt like it might drop at any moment.
Zhen Zhen was silent for a moment, but ultimately couldn’t bring herself to push her away. She turned around, gently took that hand, and carefully embraced the person into her arms.
“Lu Jiayin,” she whispered, “Just for a little while.”
