Chapter 38: Symphonic Poem One
The elevator ascended directly to the sixty-sixth floor. As Zhen Zhen stepped out, the two young receptionists at the front desk immediately stood up and greeted her: “Good morning, CEO Xiao Zhen.”
Although she was the designated “heir,” Zhen Zhen rarely worked at the group headquarters office. She spent most of her time at Tianfeng Technology and only appeared here for the monthly management meeting.
After Zhen Zhen’s parents passed away, the outside world once believed that Elder Mr. Zhen would have to relinquish power to his eldest son’s family. However, events unfolded unexpectedly. The Elder personally took in the then seven-year-old Zhen Zhen and signaled “succession across generations.”
Now that the Elder’s eightieth birthday celebration had passed, the transfer of power was an unstated fact. It was only because Tianfeng Technology’s growth momentum was so strong and Zhen Zhen had consistently avoided interfering with group affairs that the situation temporarily remained outwardly calm.
Just as she reached the office door, a group of people emerged from the end of the corridor. Surrounded by the brightly dressed female white-collar workers was Zhen Zhen’s cousin, Zhen Ming.
“Oh, the rarely seen busy bee is here.” A playful smile appeared on Zhen Ming’s face. “I heard CEO Xiao Zhen ran off to the film set to accompany his wife a few days ago, actually delaying work. Tsk, that’s not quite like you, little sister.”
Zhen Zhen was long accustomed to his occasional provocations, but the assistant Xiao Chen couldn’t stand it. He immediately retorted: “Ms. Lu was injured during filming, and CEO Xiao Zhen went to check on her out of concern. Speaking of which, CEO Ming, you must have wide connections in the entertainment industry. It was only our first time at a film set, and we already encountered an acquaintance of yours.”
Zhen Ming’s eyebrow twitched. Before he could stop him, Xiao Chen quickly added: “I just recently found out that actress Qi Yongshan is so close to CEO Ming. She asked me to send her regards to you. You’ve kept this hidden so well.”
“Don’t listen to hearsay,” Zhen Ming interrupted him. “Ms. Qi and I met at a dinner party. We are just ordinary friends. Even if you are Zhen Zhen’s assistant, you can’t slander me arbitrarily.”
Xiao Chen nodded sincerely: “CEO Ming, you are right. So, whoever spreads rumors is a dog.”
The meaning of his words felt slightly off. Zhen Ming looked suspiciously at the person in front of him, adopting his self-perceived handsome and stable demeanor: “It’s almost time for the meeting. I’ll go ahead.”
The group management meetings in recent months were hosted by Zhen Zhen on behalf of Chairman Zhen. She didn’t put on airs, routinely allowing each department head to report their progress. The process was very fast.
In the beginning, some stubborn executives, seeing her youth and gender, would be somewhat negligent in their reports. However, Zhen Zhen would point out data errors on the spot, leaving them incredibly embarrassed. Since then, fewer people dared to falsify information.
The meeting proceeded as smoothly as usual. As it was nearing its conclusion, Zhen Zhen suddenly spoke: “CEO Ming, please stay behind.”
Hearing this, the executives’ eyes lit up, thinking they would finally witness a confrontation between the Zhen siblings. However, Zhen Zhen merely smiled and added: “There are some details about Tianfeng’s promotion plan for next year that I’d like to discuss with you.”
They’re not going to fight again. The spectators showed disappointed expressions. After the last unrelated person left the conference room, Zhen Zhen got up and closed the door again.
Zhen Ming initially thought she genuinely wanted to talk about work. It wasn’t until he saw Zhen Zhen’s expression that he vaguely felt something was wrong. His smile remained on his face as he casually asked: “You weren’t talking about Tianfeng’s promotion. Little sister, do you have something else you need me for?”
Zhen Zhen didn’t waste any time talking around the issue. She asked directly: “How much did you involve yourself in the Xinli Pictures matter?”
Hearing this, Zhen Ming’s expression instantly changed. He hesitated and said: “What does that have to do with you? You’re allowed to run Tianfeng, but there’s no rule in the Zhen family that says I can’t have external businesses, is there?”
“I don’t care if you have external businesses, but I certainly have the right to question the practice of using Group resources to move money from one pocket to another.”
Zhen Zhen had anticipated her cousin’s reaction. She didn’t believe Zhen Ming would be truly candid with her, so she continued: “Regardless of how much you’re involved, it’s best to stop now…”
“How can I do that!” Zhen Ming immediately retorted anxiously. “I’ve invested quite a bit early on, and we’re about to IPO. You’re telling me to pull out? I’m telling you, Zhen Zhen, you’re not the head of the Zhen Corporation yet. Don’t you understand the saying that blocking someone’s path to wealth is like killing their parents?”
Seeing Zhen Ming almost having “desperate” written on his face, Zhen Zhen remained unswayed, urging him: “This method of operation carries significant risks. A slight mistake could lead to big trouble. Forget about wealth; you might even get into legal trouble.”
“Cousin, I’m talking to you calmly here because I don’t want to escalate the matter. You still have time to pull out before the listing plan is finalized.”
Zhen Ming talked for a long time without success. Seeing Zhen Zhen’s consistently calm and unemotional expression, a familiar bitterness rose in his heart. He said discontentedly: “You have the inheritance from your uncle and aunt, so of course you don’t lack money. That’s why you lecture me like this. There are plenty of companies doing this outside, and not all of them—”
His final words were abruptly cut off, stunned by an icy glare.
Zhen Zhen was usually calm and gentle. She never expected her to be so frightening when she was angry. Zhen Ming swallowed hard and said sheepishly: “Okay, okay, I understand. I’ll handle it.”
Zhen Zhen looked into his eyes: “You’d better.”
Closing the office door, Zhen Ming nervously loosened his tie and slumped onto the executive chair, panting: “What nonsense.”
His poor opinion of Zhen Zhen was nothing new. Since the Elder tacitly excluded his father from the Group succession, the then teenage Zhen Ming had hated Zhen Zhen.
Because of this cousin, his father couldn’t lead the Zhen Corporation, and their family had to rely on a meager monthly allowance, barely getting by. They had to submit requests to finance just to buy anything substantial. Life was incredibly stifling. Also because of her, he would only ever be “CEO Ming,” and the manager who would be respectfully addressed by the surname “Zhen” in this building would definitely not be him.
Jealousy was like a seed buried in his heart, continuously watered and nurtured by malice.
Just as Zhen Ming was filled with indignation, his phone on the desk rang. His eyes scanned the screen, and he immediately snatched the phone.
Upon hearing the voice on the other end, a nearly fawning smile appeared on his face. Even though the person couldn’t see him, he still bowed and scraped as he greeted them: “Brother You.”
A moment later, he apologized carefully: “It’s that sycophant named Song under her. He’s a crazy dog, biting and not letting go. Don’t worry, I’ve already arranged a backup plan. I’ll transfer the shares in a few days. As for that actress you mentioned, it’s just a matter of throwing some money at it.”
The person on the other end said something else. This time, Zhen Ming genuinely grinned. He slowly spun halfway in the executive chair, laughing as he said: “Of course, I couldn’t be more eager. It is my great fortune to be introduced to your third miss.”
After cautiously hanging up the phone, Zhen Ming’s spirits were restored. For the promise made during this call, he had taken a massive risk, almost recklessly diverting a large amount of capital, which finally won him the other person’s favor.
If the plan goes smoothly, it’s still unknown who will ultimately win. He looked out the window proudly, smiling.
“CEO Ming met with the legal department these past few days. He should be processing the share transfer procedures.” In the office, Song Yuzhi stood rigidly, reporting with an impassive face: “He thinks he’s done this without anyone knowing, but the IPO roadshow and promotion are still being conducted by the company under his effective control.”
Through Song Yuzhi’s meticulous investigation, Zhen Zhen realized that her cousin was indeed a management genius. To siphon money from the Zhen Corporation, he actually came up with the strategy of starting a publicity company and then bidding for contracts with himself.
Over the past few years, through a continuous outflow of Group resources, Zhen Ming’s pockets had grown quite plump.
Along with the increase in his wealth came the endless escalation of human greed.
“Faced with such immense profit, I guessed Zhen Ming wouldn’t listen to me,” she fell into contemplation looking at the report. “Since he’s always guarded against me, I have no choice but to inform Grandpa and let them decide.”
She genuinely had little interest in running the Zhen Corporation. She only silently accepted the Elder’s arrangements because she didn’t want to disappoint him. In Zhen Zhen’s view, researching autonomous driving technology was her biggest aspiration.
Before Tianfeng, the technology in this field in China lagged far behind other developed countries. The core technology of the Lightning series was led and developed by Zhen Zhen, forming the foundation of her livelihood.
If it weren’t for the fact that a potential crisis involving Zhen Ming and Xinli Media would affect Dark Light, she might have still chosen to turn a blind eye.
This film was a project Lu Jiayin had invested a lot of effort into. Previously, Zhen Zhen didn’t understand her work, thinking actors just needed to look beautiful on camera. It wasn’t until her experience on the set that she understood the sheer effort so many people put in behind the scenes to complete a film.
Thinking of Lu Jiayin, the vexation in her heart dissipated like smoke.
As if sensing her thoughts, the phone on the desk lit up just then with a “ding,” indicating a new message.
It must be Lu Jiayin messaging her after wrapping up her scene. A slight smile touched Zhen Zhen’s lips. She unlocked her phone, but when she clearly read the content of the message, her gaze suddenly froze.
The screen showed a post from a marketing account she had accidentally followed during a charity auction. That account had posted many photos of Lu Jiayin in gowns, and Zhen Zhen had kept following it, thinking the photography was good.
In today’s post, she unsurprisingly saw her wife’s figure again.
However, these photos seemed to have been taken from a distance and at night, making them somewhat blurry. But the silhouette clearly belonged to Lu Jiayin, and next to her, another slightly smaller figure was leaning close.
The person, who seemed either drunk or crying, had long hair covering half their face and was tightly holding onto Lu Jiayin’s arm, looking very dependent. Lu Jiayin was turned to the side, looking back, her elegant jawline showing a hint of a cold, mature “big sister” vibe.
The title was explosive: “Queen X Queen: Uncontrollable Passion, Late-Night Lesbian Intimacy on the Street.”
