The Ex-Wife-to-Be Is Acting Weird After Losing Her Memory - Chapter 24
Chapter 24: Variation One
Hearing the sound of footsteps coming from the bedroom, Zhen Zhen put down her laptop and smiled as she turned her face.
She saw Lu Jiayin jogging into the living room. She must have grabbed a bathrobe casually; she was dressed in a hurry, her neckline slightly open. A blush covered the side of her neck, a mark left by Zhen Zhen, which looked even more alluring and beautiful against the pale skin.
“There are so many new clothes in my room,” Lu Jiayin raised her eyelashes, looking puzzled at the person in front of her. “Where did they come from?”
It seemed she had discovered the new clothes. The corner of Zhen Zhen’s eye held a smile, yet she maintained a calm demeanor: “I bought them.”
“You bought them?” Lu Jiayin had looked at the clothes; without exception, they were all high-end couture gowns. Among them, there were three sets of the Issyan National Style Embroidery Series that she liked, all from the latest season.
Zhen Zhen nodded: “Yes. Some I had ordered from France a few days ago, and a few others I thought you looked beautiful in, so I bought them for you.”
For example, the dark green gown. Lu Jiayin looked light and graceful in it, especially the design of the back, which was particularly captivating. It made her look like a radiant wood fairy. Zhen Zhen felt the design was very suitable for her wife, so she bought the three most expensive pieces from the new collection in one go.
Lu Jiayin was a bit bewildered. So, according to what she just said, these were gifts for her? After Zhen Zhen finished speaking and saw no reaction, she slowly added: “I also ordered the jewelry set that matches your gown from last night. The supplier said it needs to be mailed from Italy, so you will receive it in a few days.”
“I’m not talking about that,” Lu Jiayin walked up to the sofa, interrupting her slightly anxiously. “Why are you buying me things?”
She almost forgot. Strictly speaking, Zhen Zhen was also a rich person. Was she planning to use money to resolve what happened yesterday?
Seeing her wife’s worried expression, the smile on Zhen Zhen’s face faltered. Did she not like them?
To buy Lu Jiayin a suitable gift, she had consulted her only friend who claimed to be a “dating expert,” and then specially instructed her assistant to subtly get all of Lu Jiayin’s measurements from Fu Ruyi, which also led her to the information about the brands Lu Jiayin liked.
“It’s okay if you don’t like them,” she concealed her smile, pretending to be nonchalant. “They’re not really special gifts. It’s just that when my assistant ordered things for me, she just happened to…”
Before she finished speaking, she suddenly felt a blur in front of her, followed by a soft body throwing itself into her arms.
Lu Jiayin sat on her lap, a cute curve forming at the corners of her eyes. She asked in a suspicious tone: “You just ‘happened’ to get my measurements? And ‘happened’ to know exactly what I like?”
The moment Lu Jiayin pounced, Zhen Zhen felt the empty feeling in her arms being filled. Her arms embraced the person automatically, and she said blankly: “I didn’t know if you would like them, but… I really wanted to buy you something.”
Whenever she had asked Lu Jiayin before if she could give her something, the answer had always been “No need, thank you.” It wasn’t until recently, when their relationship had improved, that she summoned the courage to send her something again.
She wanted to place all this affection in front of her, hoping to exchange it for that lovely smile.
Lu Jiayin touched Zhen Zhen’s collar and smiled: “Thank you. But my wife, don’t spend so extravagantly in the future. I don’t attend many business events, so the opportunities to wear formal gowns are very limited, especially current season pieces.”
She had initially wanted to buy that Issyan gown herself, but later felt the opportunities to wear it were too limited. Clothes worth hundreds of thousands gathering dust in the closet felt like a waste.
“I want to see you wear them,” Zhen Zhen looked up at her. “You look especially beautiful in this gown. If you’re afraid there are no occasions to wear it, you… you can also wear it just for me.”
The latter half of the sentence was whispered so softly it was almost inaudible. Lu Jiayin hadn’t expected someone as reserved and proper as Zhen Zhen to say such a loving remark. Her fingers paused, leaving her stunned.
The images from last night involuntarily surfaced in her mind—her wearing the dress Zhen Zhen called “beautiful,” turning around for Zhen Zhen to help her take it off. Lu Jiayin blinked her eyelashes, saying a little awkwardly: “What are you thinking!”
The hand resting on her waist also seemed to feel hot.
“You haven’t joined the crew yet. If you have time, I want to take you out. You can wear…” Zhen Zhen’s words stopped halfway, and her smile suddenly deepened. “Oh, it seems you were thinking something else.”
Lu Jiayin turned her head, blushing furiously: “I wasn’t! I didn’t!”
Zhen Zhen, when you learn to be naughty, you’re not cute anymore.
She felt her waist being lightly held: “Then do you want to wear it for me now?”
“Is CEO Zhen so free lately?” Fu Ruyi stood by the floor-to-ceiling window. After seeing Lu Jiayin enter the door, the dark green Bentley slowly drove away from the studio entrance. She couldn’t help but be curious. “She’s even personally driving you around.”
Lu Jiayin, who was tidying her hair that had been ruffled earlier, paused her movement and said nonchalantly: “Probably.”
The contract for Dark Light had been delivered these past few days, requiring adjustments to the filming schedule and other details. Lu Jiayin decided to come to the studio herself rather than have Fu Ruyi run around.
Perhaps concerned for her safety, after asking Lu Jiayin the first time if she could ride in her car, Zhen Zhen tacitly started dropping her off and picking her up. And because Zhen Zhen never drove herself, her “ride” meant they took the car together. As a result, the ten-minute journey often took half an hour to complete.
Lu Jiayin calmed her heartbeat and remembered something else: “Oh, right, the songs I asked you to copy for me…”
“Here you go.” Fu Ruyi pulled a small, delicate music player from her drawer. “It’s all the latest popular singles, plus the live versions…”
Lu Jiayin was delighted, taking the player with a grin: “Fantastic! It’s been so long since I’ve listened to my daughter’s songs!”
“It’s better not to let the media know about this preference of yours,” Fu Ruyi lightly massaged her forehead. Despite her outward appearance as a cool and aloof goddess, Lu Jiayin was actually a fan of “two-dimensional” culture, particularly fond of a virtual idol group called “Meow Meow Girls Squad.”
“I haven’t heard the new single, Strawberry Snow Kingdom Sweet Sweet yet.” Lu Jiayin pressed the play button, and light, ethereal electronic music quickly started playing. The incredibly catchy rhythm drifted through the room.
While organizing documents, Fu Ruyi’s ears were filled with the mesmerizing sound of “ice cream and chocolate, strawberry snow kingdom sweet sweet.” She looked back at the earnest-faced Lu Jiayin and suddenly felt a strange sense of emotion.
It was shortly after Lu Jiayin debuted. A reporter interviewed her. The person in charge of reviewing the draft was a well-known, assertive promotions director at the company. She looked at the draft and immediately frowned in disapproval.
“They asked how you usually relax, and your answer represents your persona.” The promotions director picked up a pen, crossed out “reading manga,” and changed it directly to “listening to classical music.” She then instructed, “Go copy some classical music snippets for her, the most widely known pieces, to prevent her from being unable to answer next time.”
Later, when Fu Ruyi was independently managing artists, Lu Jiayin asked her a question before signing the contract: “Can I not listen to classical music?”
The question made Fu Ruyi pause for a moment, and she realized that this actress, famous for her aloof and distant image, wasn’t as boring as rumored.
Lu Jiayin’s aloofness often stemmed from her unwillingness to deliberately adopt a persona. Rather than focusing on marketing strategies to gain attention, she preferred to quietly focus on her work and deliver tangible results.
Fu Ruyi’s pen didn’t stop moving, and after some thought, she half-jokingly reminded Lu Jiayin: “It’s fine if you listen here to relax, but if CEO Xiao Zhen hears the songs you like, be careful your goddess image doesn’t shatter.”
Lu Jiayin, immersed in the joyful music, nodded absentmindedly.
By the afternoon, all the contract details were finally settled. Before Lu Jiayin left, Fu Ruyi handed her a document bag: “Your birthday is early next month. These are cards from your fan club. I’ve checked them, and there are no other valuable items. Take them home and read them on the way.”
As an actress who did not rely on an idol persona, Lu Jiayin had clearly stated early on that she didn’t want organized support or gifts. Her fans were familiar with her habits, and every year, they only sent handmade cards during her birthday period, which were the only gifts allowed to reach her. Fu Ruyi had specifically retrieved this year’s cards from the company, and now was a good time to hand them over.
“The filming won’t start that quickly, so your birthday should still be free,” she said casually as she walked Lu Jiayin to the door. “Do you want to celebrate sweetly with CEO Zhen this year?”
As they spoke at the doorway, the familiar Bentley was just turning the corner. Lu Jiayin glanced at the license plate and said lightly: “We’ll see then. I feel awkward bringing it up specifically.”
Since their marriage, they had somehow missed each other’s birthdays due to various busy schedules. Lu Jiayin even suspected Zhen Zhen might not even remember her birthday.
Carrying this subtle mood, she was still preoccupied after getting into the car until Zhen Zhen nudged her and asked with a smile: “What are you singing?”
Since getting in, Lu Jiayin had been staring blankly out the window, and just now, she had quietly hummed a strange melody that sounded like a kitten humming.
Lu Jiayin, realizing she had accidentally sung the highly catchy tune she’d been listening to all afternoon, covered her embarrassment with a cough: “It was Wang and the others. They were playing music at the studio this afternoon, and I accidentally heard it.”
She absolutely couldn’t admit she liked it!
“The melody is very unique,” Zhen Zhen commented seriously. “It feels like you can pick it up after just one listen.”
That’s why it’s called a catchy tune, isn’t it? It’s simple, which is why it’s relaxing. Lu Jiayin answered her silently, a smile still on her face: “Haha, right? Those two-dimensional fans just like listening to strange songs.”
Zhen Zhen didn’t dwell on the issue for too long and changed the subject: “I might not be able to accompany you tomorrow. I have something I need to go back to Grandpa’s house for.”
Lu Jiayin turned her head: “Is there something going on at Grandpa’s place?”
She had wanted to offer to go along, but Zhen Zhen was already shaking her head: “No, I have some private matters to attend to. Can the driver take you alone tomorrow?”
This implied she didn’t want Lu Jiayin to come along. Although Zhen Zhen usually had her own work schedule, Lu Jiayin felt a strange intuition this time, as if Zhen Zhen was hiding something in her words.
She composed herself and smiled: “Okay, then come back early when you’re done.”
