Chapter 2: “Happy Wedding.” [Revised]
An unfamiliar, unexpected, and direct question.
Jiang Yu hadn’t anticipated that the woman would respond to her so readily.
Even though she had prepared herself, Jiang Yu was momentarily stunned, but she quickly recovered. Fearing the woman might change her mind, Jiang Yu looked into her eyes, quickly retrieved the prenuptial agreement from her bag, and said with a smile: “Yes, that is my intention.”
“Here is the marriage agreement. Would you like to take a look?”
The sun was bright at the moment. Jiang Yu’s field of vision was filled with clearly defined, bony fingers. The woman’s skin was incredibly fair, allowing a few faint blue veins to show through. A silver-white metal chain watch rested on her protruding wrist bone; the watch face was a gentle blue, perfectly complementing her.
The woman opened the agreement, skimming through it. Throughout, her face remained expressionless, and her reading speed was fast. Before long, she reached the final page of the agreement.
After finishing, she did not close the agreement’s cover. Her fingers lightly held the thin papers, and she spoke slowly, in a very casual manner: “Is that all?”
Jiang Yu immediately replied: “For now, yes. But if you have any new conditions later on, we can negotiate and add more content to it.”
In the silence, Jiang Yu watched the woman turn around.
Holding the agreement, the woman turned her back to Jiang Yu, then spoke, giving a definite answer: “Let’s go. We’ll go in.”
Jiang Yu sighed in relief and followed the woman’s footsteps into the Civil Affairs Bureau.
The woman’s style of getting things done was more decisive than Jiang Yu had expected. Before long, both their names were written on the agreement.
All procedures were completed within half an hour, and the window clerk called out their names.
IDs and household registration booklets were handed over sequentially. The joint photo they had just taken was already placed on the marriage certificate page.
At this moment, an inexplicable quiet settled, making the sound of the staff member typing on the keyboard especially distinct. They were just about to reach the final step: stamping the official seal.
It felt like a sacred and solemn process.
Since this was only a contractual marriage, Jiang Yu felt no strong emotion. She quietly watched the staff member operate the stamp from start to finish. However, she occasionally noticed the woman beside her, Rong Wei, looking at her.
Sensing that her gaze had been discovered, Rong Wei did not panic. She simply smiled, took the red book with the seal already stamped by the staff member, and spoke calmly and composedly: “Happy wedding.”
Jiang Yu took her own marriage certificate, looked at Rong Wei, and nodded.
There were other people lined up behind them waiting for service, so standing there was inconvenient.
She quickly moved to an empty spot on the side, tossing both the marriage certificate and the agreement into her bag. She then said, “Thank you for your help. For easier future contact, shall we add each other on a social app? Or, if you prefer not to, you could give me a phone number, and we can contact that way.”
Rong Wei didn’t hesitate: “WeChat.”
Jiang Yu nodded, and as she walked further inside the bureau, she opened the WeChat scan function.
Ding—the phone screen popped up with a user whose profile picture was a white Ragdoll cat.
She held up her phone for Rong Wei to see: “Is this you?”
Rong Wei nodded. A moment later, the phone in her hand vibrated. She glanced at it, filled in the memo, and put the phone away.
“Well then, I’ll be going now. Goodbye.”
“Contact me on WeChat if anything comes up.”
With that, she turned and walked away on her high heels.
She had pure black, highly feminine, wavy hair. Because she was tall and slender, she didn’t look overly mature or glamorous. For the demands of the marriage photo shoot, she was dressed simply today, wearing a white shirt under a mint-green suit jacket. To avoid monotony, she had specifically worn a set of high-end jewelry featuring interconnected petal shapes, large and sparkling, making her look exceptionally bright.
Rong Wei withdrew her gaze, bundled the marriage certificate and the agreement together, and left the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Next to the Civil Affairs Bureau was the parking lot.
Rong Wei walked into the parking lot, and her assistant quickly got out to open the car door for her.
The assistant’s pupils suddenly contracted upon seeing the red marriage certificate in Rong Wei’s hand.
However, as a qualified assistant, she recovered immediately after a brief moment of surprise.
The car door closed, and the faint, somewhat bitter scent of elegant agarwood drifted into the nasal cavity.
The assistant said to her: “Young Miss hasn’t arrived yet.”
Rong Wei’s purpose for coming to the Civil Affairs Bureau today was simple: with both her mothers out of town, she was here to catch her rebellious and outspoken younger sister and bring her home.
She casually placed the documents in the storage box, closed the car door, and lightly fiddled with the watch chain on her wrist. As if nothing had happened, she simply replied, “Understood.”
While speaking with her assistant, her phone vibrated—a video call from her mother, Rong Qing.
Rong Wei answered the call. The person appearing on the screen, however, was a blonde, blue-eyed woman with tanned skin. Her skin looked healthy, and her eyes were spirited, looking full of energy.
This was her other mother—Grill.
Rong Wei’s family situation was rather unique: the fathers of her sister and herself were a French and a Chinese sperm donor, respectively, and her mothers were Rong Qing and Grill. Both mothers showered them with love and, no matter how busy they were, tried to make time for all important events in their lives.
However, her sister was quite stubborn, and this recent reconciliation attempt was too sudden. Grill, a former world-class tennis player, had old injuries that required her to return to France for treatment every spring, which meant both Rong Qing and Grill couldn’t be present at the Civil Affairs Bureau this time.
“Have you seen your sister?”
Grill’s tone was urgent, her amber eyes filled with worry.
Rong Wei glanced out the window: “Not yet, but she should be arriving soon.”
While she was speaking, another woman’s figure appeared on the screen—the phone’s owner, Rong Qing. Rong Qing was actually fifty-six this year, but thanks to good maintenance, she looked only in her early thirties. With long dark hair and a cool expression, she possessed the aura of a high-status leader.
She lightly hugged Grill, looked at Rong Wei, and said, “Remember to report back immediately.”
Rong Wei nodded: “I’ll message you when I see her.”
As soon as she finished speaking, a pink and white Ferrari flashed into Rong Wei’s view.
Rong Wei looked at her two mothers and said, “I see her. Talk to you later.”
The call ended.
Rong Wei put away her phone, got out of the car, and saw Rong Shi stepping out of the Ferrari.
Rong Shi had inherited Grill’s amber eyes and light blonde hair. Her features were delicate and striking, and due to her younger age, she appeared more lively than Rong Wei.
The sisters had a ten-year age gap, and Rong Shi was still slightly afraid of her older sister.
But she wouldn’t allow her demeanor to be defeated first. She stood in front of Rong Wei, pretending to be calm: “What are you doing here?”
Rong Wei didn’t answer, merely smiling and counter-questioning: “What do you think?”
Rong Wei’s tone was calm, seemingly understated, but Rong Shi involuntarily swallowed hard. In daily life, Rong Wei was not fierce, nor did she possess the chilling aloofness of their mother, Rong Qing, that kept people at a distance. On the contrary, most of the time, Rong Wei was gentle and considerate.
But there were always moments when she found Rong Wei slightly terrifying.
It was an extremely subtle pressure, like water soaking into every pore without a sound.
She instantly gave in, holding her breath and looking into Rong Wei’s eyes. After a long pause, she spoke hesitantly: “Oh, I know I was wrong. I was impulsive. I’m sorry to Ms. Grill and Ms. Rong, and I’ve troubled my dearest sister…”
“Let’s go home.”
“I’ve missed you so much. We haven’t seen each other in so long.”
“Also, quickly tell Mom and them to let Ms. Grill rest assured and recover.”
Rong Wei looked at Rong Shi, raised her hand to tap her sister’s head, and said flatly, “At least you have some conscience.”
Rong Wei called Rong Qing, briefly explained the situation, drove her sister home, and then returned to the company.
…
Unlike the recently rising Qin and Song families, the Rong family was the oldest and most prominent wealthy dynasty in Lin City, with deep foundations.
Their ancestors were famous gentry. They contributed significantly to the war effort during the Republic of China era, and after the founding of the People’s Republic, they followed the wave of development, entering the internet and new energy sectors, making them an undeniable commercial empire.
However, unlike other families in this circle, the Rong family’s successive leaders and heirs have always been mysterious and low-key, paying extreme attention to privacy, with no photographs leaked to the public. The few pieces of information about the Rong family that were known came from the magnificent wedding of the former family head, Rong Qing, and the world-class tennis player, Ms. Grill.
As for the newly appointed head of the Rong family, she was even more mysterious, with almost no public news about her. The only people who knew her identity were likely close friends, relatives, or necessary high-level executives within the company.
Rong Wei finished a video conference with her executives just as she arrived at the company, entering the private elevator and heading straight for the meeting room on the twenty-sixth floor.
Rong Wei’s timing was perfect; she arrived at the meeting room exactly at the scheduled time.
Rong Wei sat down, her gaze sweeping over everyone present, and she smiled: “Is that all?”
That brief sentence immediately caused many high-level executives to sharpen their focus.
…
The day’s work was finally completed around eleven at night.
After becoming an adult, Rong Wei had moved out of the old Rong family manor. She now lived alone in one of Lin City’s premier wealthy neighborhoods, Jinjiang International. The entire complex featured large, flat-floor designs with amenities like swimming pools and open-air balconies, giving it a strong modern feel.
As usual, after returning home, Rong Wei finished her shower and went to the study to deal with work.
About half an hour later, Rong Wei received a message from her assistant.
The phone screen lit up, and Rong Wei quickly scanned the content—it was all the information on Jiang Yu. The file was highly detailed, including her family background, profession, and life experiences.
Rong Wei only briefly looked through it, focusing her attention on the last message sent by the assistant.
[Additionally… Ms. Rong, we just received news that Ms. Jiang has already arrived in Li City.]
Rong Wei lightly tapped the desktop with her fingertips, her gaze lingering on these two messages for a long time.
After a while, she turned off the phone screen and looked at the butterfly specimen her friend had recently prepared and sent to her on the desk.
It was a specimen of a Blue Morpho butterfly from the tropics.
Its entire body was blue, with fifteen-centimeter wings that shimmered, making it highly ornamental. It rested there, its posture particularly expansive and quiet, looking bright and free, just like Jiang Yu.
