- Chapter 6 - All the Members Fell in Love with Feng Wu
Boom!
Brilliant fireworks exploded in the air, the scattered sparks coalescing into a line of words:
[God Wu’s Strawberry-Scented Wife] has sent an Asteroid!
Tian Jiu’s eyes widened. Even the gift effects were this elaborate?
Immediately following, one firework after another burst across the sky, their sparks forming various IDs and gift names. The kaleidoscopic colors lit up the vast expanse of the sky, reflecting against Feng Wu’s face in a flickering dance of light.
Ah, he looks even more handsome now.
Tian Jiu couldn’t help but steal glances at Feng Wu. A handsome man was meant to be admired, after all; looking at someone that good-looking was practically as satisfying as a good meal.
“Tsk, tsk. That’s all cold, hard cash,” Old Zhao said, clearly used to the spectacle. “Whenever FOX is down to just him again, I know he’s about to start streaming to make some money.”
“What do you mean?” Tian Jiu asked, confused.
“Well, there’s a story behind that.” Old Zhao became animated the moment gossip was mentioned, recounting every detail. “You know Team FOX, right? The one where Feng Wu is the captain.”
“Every year at the selection trials, FOX recruits four rookies to join the team and compete in the League. After the League ends, they spend another year fighting to stay in the top 26. But then, the teammates always leave for various reasons to join other teams, leaving Feng Wu all by himself again.”
“Then the new trials begin, Feng Wu recruits four more newcomers, and the cycle repeats. It’s practically a tradition by now. Registration for this year’s trials has already opened, and the matches start next month. Feng Wu will need to recruit again, but since the team is broke, he has to ‘sell his looks’ and skill on stream to rake in the funds.”
That sounded somehow both pitiful and a little wicked.
“Why do the teammates leave?” Tian Jiu didn’t understand. A team capable of making it into the League couldn’t be bad, right?
“What else? Broken hearts.”
“Huh?”
Old Zhao gave a sly grin and wiggled his eyebrows. “Exactly what it sounds like. You get it.”
Tian Jiu looked lost. “I really don’t.”
“Tsk, brother, you’re too innocent.” Old Zhao almost suspected he was a minor; his tone sounded exasperated, but his expression was gleeful with the thrill of gossiping.
“It’s because all those teammates fell in love with Feng Wu. Once they were rejected, they were too embarrassed to stay. Or, if they didn’t confess but Feng Wu caught onto it, he’d just fire them directly. Get it now?”
“What?!” Tian Jiu was marveled. “Then why doesn’t he just tell people not to like him from the start? Or just find teammates of the same gender?”
Old Zhao shook his head. “You’re still too young. Feng Wu is a Super S+ Alpha. Spending day and night together, being constantly enveloped by that Super S+ pheromone… even A+ Alphas and Betas would experience pseudo-heat, let alone Omegas.”
Tian Jiu knew about this; he had researched the gender basics of this world.
Alpha, Beta, and Omega (the second genders) usually differentiated during puberty between the ages of 13 and 16. After differentiation, both Alphas and Omegas developed a gland at the back of the neck to store pheromones. While both had glands, an Omega’s was far more fragile and sensitive.
Tian Jiu had felt the back of his own neck before; it felt a bit ticklish when touched, but there was no other sensation, which was likely due to his disabled gland.
“Pheromones” were unique to every Alpha and Omega, emitting different scents. Opposite genders attracted, while the same genders repelled and regardless of attraction or repulsion, accidents could happen. To prevent such incidents, they needed regular injections of suppressants and had to learn to control their pheromones.
Alphas were generally better at this because they possessed stronger willpower. Omegas, while lacking that same level of inherent willpower, had many auxiliary tools like suppressant bracelets and gland patches to help them stay in control.
Beyond the scent, pheromones were categorized into grades: S+, S, A+, A, and B. The higher the grade, the rarer it was, and higher grades could suppress lower ones. For instance, when an S+ Alpha released pheromones, Alphas below S-rank might feel fear, offense, or a sudden urge to submit.
As for Omegas, when influenced by an Alpha’s pheromones, they could experience anything from slight fever and weakness to directly entering their heat.
“Heat” was a special period Omegas experienced once a month, much like a period. It had to be either blocked with suppressants or soothed by an Alpha’s temporary marking (biting the gland to inject pheromones) or a complete marking. Sometimes, heat could be unstable; if an Omega was hit by an Alpha’s pheromones, it could trigger a pseudo-heat, which could then develop into a real one.
Correspondingly, Alphas occasionally experienced a “rut,” during which their minds would be filled with… less than wholesome thoughts, requiring a partner’s comfort. They also displayed a more violent side when influenced by an Omega’s pheromones, feeling an urgent impulse to possess the Omega especially if their pheromone compatibility score was high.
Because of this, recklessly scattering pheromones was considered sexual harassment here, and severe cases could even lead to prison time!
Furthermore, the grade of one’s pheromones often determined their social status. Since Alphas were overwhelmingly powerful in both pheromones and physical constitution, they tended to hold the most sway in every industry. Next were the Betas, who were unbothered by heat or ruts. Last were the Omegas, who had delicate physiques and were subject to the monthly influence of their heat.
In other words, Omegas were generally viewed as a vulnerable group in need of protection.
However, for Tian Jiu, these common rules didn’t quite apply. He had no pheromones, no heat, no need for suppressants, and certainly no need for an Alpha’s marking. Aside from being able to smell pheromones, he was virtually identical to a Beta. In his eyes, those scents and various grades of pheromones were just like perfume. They held no offensive power over him at all.
“Wait a minute,” Tian Jiu said, puzzled. “I thought the highest grade was S+? What is a Super S+?”
Old Zhao turned to look at him, surprised. “How do you not know that? It’s common knowledge even for people who don’t play Fengshen.”
Tian Jiu paused and whispered, “My family was poor; I didn’t get to go online much before.”
“Oh~” Old Zhao understood immediately. He threw an arm around Tian Jiu’s shoulder like they were old pals and laughed. “A brother from the Lower District, I should have guessed. Why didn’t you say so sooner?”
Tian Jiu understood too; it seemed Old Zhao was a resident of the Lower District.
“Let me educate you, brother. A Super S+ pheromone refers to a grade higher than S+, one so high that current technology can’t accurately categorize it. To this day, there are only three cases in the entire interstellar world; all of them Alphas and Feng Wu is one of them.”
“Is it very strong?”
“Of course!” Old Zhao exclaimed. “Do you think playing Fengshen is only about talent and stamina? Pheromones are the most important part! The higher the pheromone grade, the more precise the skill control and the greater the offensive power.”
Tian Jiu realized. “No wonder Feng Wu is ranked number one.”
But if that was the case, wouldn’t someone like Tian Jiu who had no pheromones be unable to go pro? Were these game rules… fair?
“That’s where you’re wrong.” Old Zhao interrupted his thoughts. “Feng Wu has held the number one spot for years not because of his pheromones. Or rather, he has never once used his pheromones while playing Fengshen!”
What?!
He reached number one without using pheromones?
Tian Jiu’s eyes lit up instantly. “How did he hit number one without them? And why doesn’t he use them?”
“Through pure technique and a suicidal streak of madness, of course.” Old Zhao suddenly shuddered, as if remembering something that made his skin crawl.
He didn’t elaborate further on that topic, instead adding, “It’s not that he’s unwilling to use them; it’s that Super S+ pheromones are too unstable. Even a top-tier Alpha with willpower as strong as Feng Wu’s can’t fully control them.”
Furthermore, there were no Super S+ Omegas in the world to soothe him, so he had to rely on expensive specialty suppressants and sheer willpower to keep it bottled up. Because of this, he occasionally leaked pheromones accidentally, which would then affect his teammates.
Tian Jiu frowned, suddenly finding Feng Wu a bit pitiful. Holding back pheromones probably felt worse than holding in your pee.
He remembered another detail and asked, “What about the other two? Didn’t you say there were three Alphas like that?”
Old Zhao sighed. “The other two? They’re quarantined in an insane asylum.”
“!!!” Tian Jiu was shocked.
He looked toward Feng Wu. The man was still lying on the tree branch, looking relaxed and carefree. The flickering light and shadows dancing over him made his spot seem like a world apart from the smoke-filled battlefield on the other side of the forest.
Yet, looking at him like that, Tian Jiu felt a slight ache in his chest. Someone this handsome… surely he won’t go crazy too? That would be such a waste.
As he worried privately, Tian Jiu noticed the fireworks in the sky had vanished. The world was left with nothing but the intermittent sounds of gunfire, artillery, and the occasional clash of cold steel.
Feng Wu had turned off the gift effects.
The battlefield, which had been at a distance, seemed to be gradually converging toward Feng Wu’s location. The real-time scoreboard in the upper-left corner showed the current survivors: 25 people.
After a boom of artillery, 24 remaining.
Gunfire rang out, firelight flared, and the silver glint of cold weapons flashed by. 13 remaining.
The world went quiet. The sound of light footsteps gradually approached Feng Wu’s position—so faint they could only be heard by listening intently.
Feng Wu curled his lips. He slowly opened his eyes, sat up straight, and raised his shell-gun. After waiting for two seconds, he suddenly fired in one direction.
Boom!
The entire earth seemed to shake. Tian Jiu felt himself wobble along with the vibration. He then noticed the survivor count had dropped to 12.
Feng Wu suddenly flipped over and jumped down from the branch. Almost the instant he left, a throwing star appeared in the spot where he had just been lying! Before he even hit the ground, Feng Wu raised his gun and fired toward the direction the star had come from. After the blast, the survivors dropped to 11.
A phrase suddenly popped into Tian Jiu’s head, one that was both atmospheric-ruining and peak “chuunibyou”: It’s hunting time!
In the arena, Feng Wu who had been lying around for most of the match, finally deigned to leave the great tree. He strode toward the heart of the forest with his long legs.
The cannon shells in his hand began to boom incessantly toward his surroundings. With every explosion, the ground trembled and the survivor count dropped by one. Feng Wu maintained a relaxed posture, strolling through the smoke and fire of the forest. Wherever he walked, the flames of war followed.
Tian Jiu watched that tall figure without blinking, his heart pounding wildly and his fingertips trembling unconsciously.
Firing a cannon everywhere… that looks exceptionally thrilling!
After the final blast, Feng Wu lowered his hand and looked up at the sky. A massive firework exploded, displaying the words: [Congratulations to Team FOX, Feng Wu, for the victory!]
Feng Wu curled his lips and looked back at the camera. “Thanks for the tips. That’s all for today. See you in a few days.”
With that, he ended the stream decisively. The entire arena became empty, and the streaming interface went pitch black. He left with such cool indifference, leaving a chorus of wails in his wake. Whether they were fans of his face, his skill, or just regular viewers, no one had seen enough of this one-sided slaughter. It wasn’t nearly satisfying enough.
Tian Jiu, however, felt a bit lightheaded. He really wanted to try that feeling of firing a cannon everywhere; it must be incredibly cathartic.
“Brother, I have to go home and make dinner for my little sister. Let’s add each other as friends; we can play together next time,” Old Zhao said.
Tian Jiu nodded. “Sure!”
The two successfully added each other. Old Zhao reached into his pocket and pulled out a stack of business cards. He gave one to Tian Jiu and smiled. “This is my card. I run a Fengshen equipment shop on the main street of the Lower District. I polish all the gear myself—guaranteed to be economical and practical. I also have various skins and outfits designed by my sister; they’re very fashionable and trendy.”
“In that whole street, my ‘Old Zhao’s Equipment Shop’ is the only one that’s honest with its prices and quality. Remember to come find me!”
Tian Jiu laughed. No wonder Old Zhao was so enthusiastic; he was scouting for customers. But it made sense; a new user like Tian Jiu would certainly need gear and skins eventually, making him a prime potential client.
Fine. Tian Jiu tucked away the card and didn’t linger in Hallworth much longer. He needed to study everything related to Fengshen, at the very least, he had to figure out all the game modes and classes. Plus, Old Zhao said the selection trials had already opened for registration; he had to hurry and sign up. If he missed this one, he’d have to wait another year. By then, he wouldn’t even be in the Upper District. What if he ended up repeating the tragedy of the original story?
Tian Jiu climbed out of the gaming pod and sat down by the floor-to-ceiling window. Out of all the places in his new home, this was his favorite; being able to see the entire prosperous street was a visual feast.
Since he now had a membership and the proper permissions, he had Erguotou organize all the vital information about Fengshen to read to him one by one.
He didn’t know how much time had passed, but the sky had turned completely dark and the streets outside had gradually grown quiet. It was late into the night. Just as Tian Jiu had finished nearly eight pages of notes, Erguotou suddenly spoke.
“Master, you have been absent from classes for forty-seven days. Your homeroom teacher has sent an email reminding you that you need to return to class tomorrow.”
Tian Jiu was stunned. “What?”
School? Was he still in school?
Ah, right. This body was only 19. He had just gotten into university last year; he was indeed at the age to be in school!
“Heavens, how did I forget that!” Tian Jiu felt his plans being thrown into disarray. He had intended to get a gym membership to train his body soon. Since he had no pheromones, he could only rely on physical stamina if he wanted to participate in the Fengshen trials. But if he had to go to class, wouldn’t he have no time to train?
Connected to his neural network, Erguotou sensed his dilemma and explained, “Imperial University is a comprehensive university with the primary mission of training professional players. You failed the trials last year. This year, you could have chosen to study in a different department, but if you wish to participate in the trials, you can still sign up.”
During their first year at Imperial University, all students were mandated to participate in the trials and study relevant courses. Tian Jiu was just starting his second year. Last year, although he was forced to sign up, he had no intention of going pro, so he naturally failed.
The original owner had intended to switch departments at the start of this semester to study Mecha Design, ensuring he could support himself. However, those plans were delayed by his accidental hospitalization. Now, Tian Jiu was definitely going to choose to continue competing.
“If you choose to register for the trials, once you submit the form, you will not need to study the theoretical courses of other departments during your time at school. You will only need to manage your own training plan. The school’s mecha training hall will also be open to you at any time.”
Mechas were massive robots. Some could be worn like battle armor, while others could be remotely controlled or operated autonomously; usually, they were used for the daily training of military soldiers. But those in the school were provided as sparring partners for pro players or those aspiring to be pros, helping them enhance their physical strength and combat techniques.
Beyond that, the school and many off-campus gyms had pheromone training rooms to help people practice controlling and utilizing their abilities. Tian Jiu didn’t need the latter, but he couldn’t wait for that mecha training.
It was exactly what he needed just when he needed it. Tian Jiu felt like he truly was the chosen one!
Not only did he transmigrate after death, but he also successfully left the Ji family, gained wealth, and then met the gossip-loving, educational Old Zhao. (Even if it was just to get a customer, it didn’t matter.) Most importantly, he had witnessed Feng Wu’s strength and beauty, and now he could go to school for free exercise.
If this wasn’t the luck of a “Goddess of Fortune,” it had to be protagonist treatment.
Hehe~
Tian Jiu smiled so wide. He checked the time: 11:30 PM. Just enough time for a nice bath and a good night’s sleep before school tomorrow!
