- Chapter 21 - Dreaming of You.
Pei Yuan felt light and airy, as if he were floating. It seemed a mattress being too soft wasn’t always a good thing.
He had managed to get Qiao Zhiyu to take his medicine by using the ultimatum: “You can sleep with me, but only if you take the medicine.” He had only meant it as a test, but to his surprise, Qiao Zhiyu had actually complied and drunk it all.
It was now nearly midnight, yet Pei Yuan didn’t feel the slightest bit sleepy. The person beside him was already out cold, and since the fever hadn’t broken yet, Pei Yuan could clearly feel the radiating heat from his body.
The phone on the nightstand lit up. He gently rolled over, dimmed the brightness to the minimum, and clicked in while lying on his side. The page jumped automatically. It was the group photo Qiao Zhiyu had posted two hours ago, tagging all of them.
The post was gaining massive traction: 1 million+ shares and likes, with over 500,000 comments. Since he couldn’t sleep anyway, Pei Yuan started browsing the comments.
- “New ‘Wife’ posted a photo!!! So beautiful, so beautiful! Wife, stay beautiful forever!”
- “Looking at Zhiyu’s real photo now, that leaked ‘raw’ photo from earlier is hilarious.”
- “That person already deleted their post; probably went to the hospital to get their face checked.”
- “Our Zhiyu baby is a solid investment! He’s incredibly gorgeous!”
- “Waaaah, watching the little ‘invisible’ star I follow slowly get discovered by the public… I feel happy and sad at the same time.”
- “Movie Star Pei and the new Wife look so good together… both their faces scream ‘Exquisite’!”
- “A bunch of nobodies dragging our Brother into a photo… their intentions are obvious. Don’t be so blatant with the clout-chasing.”
- “Our Brother didn’t even reply to him, yet he had the nerve to crowd in. Movie Star Pei is just too kind. You can tell exactly how an actor with no background or status got the lead role.”
- “Fans of a certain Movie Star shouldn’t go too far. Careful not to ruin your idol’s reputation. Having fans with no filters like you is just bad luck for the star.”
Pei Yuan had been busy coaxing Qiao Zhiyu to take his medicine after meeting the fans, so the social media situation had slipped his mind. He silenced his phone and began tapping away at the screen.
Pei Yuan V: [The photo is decent; it captures about 80% of my handsomeness.]
The comment section exploded the moment he posted.
- “Brother! I’ve made it home!”
- “Me too! The milk tea was delicious! Thanks, Brother!”
- “So fast? I’m spending the night on a train… the guy in the bunk above me not only snores, but his weight is also ‘heavyweight’ class. I’m seriously doubting the quality of this sleeper bunk. Afraid he’ll fall on me.”
Comments skipped by one by one, and soon everyone knew about him reimbursing travel expenses for the fans. Pei Yuan briefly replied to a few, reminding everyone to move to the official fan space before continuing to scroll.
- “Who’s the ‘The Scream’ in the picture? I’m laughing so hard I’m turning into fertilizer.”
Pei Yuan replied: [@Qi Le’an]
At the time, Qi Le’an had been in the middle of removing his makeup and was terrified of leaking his character look. In his excitement, the current legendary photo was born. Later, they took new ones, and Qi Le’an had begged Qiao Zhiyu not to post the bad one. It seemed he was currently “shattering” into pieces somewhere. But there was no denying that taking the “road less traveled” certainly caught people’s eyes.
- “Who’s the melancholic little brother in white? Is there a link? I love this vibe.”
Pei Yuan replied: [@Yu Yuan]
He occasionally picked a few comments to reply to, and this behavior quickly caught the attention of netizens.
- “Why is it always Pei Yuan replying? Where is Qiao Zhiyu?”
- “This is the most I’ve seen Movie Star Pei reply to comments ever. Usually, he posts and disappears. This time he replied to several, and in another actor’s comment section no less.”
- “Don’t you see? Whenever it’s a post related to Qiao Zhiyu, Movie Star Pei replies.”
- “You’ve found the blind spot, Watson.”
- “So? Where IS Qiao Zhiyu?”
Pei Yuan: [He has a fever; he’s sleeping.]
- “He’s sleeping with a fever, so you’re managing his comment section for him? Oh my god… my mind is going places, I’ll see myself out.”
- “Brother, I beg you, your casual fanservice has the power to destroy heaven and earth!”
- “Oh no, why does Zhiyu baby have a fever? Is it serious? Mommy is so worried.”
The person beside him moved, seemingly uncomfortable, his breathing becoming heavy. Pei Yuan quickly put down his phone and rolled over to check. Suddenly, his arms were full of a “hot lump.”
“My back hurts…”
Qiao Zhiyu clung to him, his hair brushing against Pei Yuan’s chin. His hot breath hit Pei Yuan’s neck; he was a literal bundle of heat. Pei Yuan froze completely, his throat tightening. Qiao Zhiyu shifted around, his hair making the crook of Pei Yuan’s neck itch intensely.
“Mng…”
Pei Yuan tried to steady his emotions, gently placing his hand on the other’s lower back. The skin beneath his hand was scorching and very soft. Tender and smooth. With this response, Qiao Zhiyu moved even more vigorously, squeezing into his embrace until half of his body was pressed against him.
Well, now Pei Yuan was definitely not sleepy.
In his dreams, Qiao Zhiyu felt a vague pain in his neck. He turned his head the other way, and the discomfort slightly dispersed his sleepiness. He felt the air around him was warm and fragrant, smelling incredibly familiar.
Qiao Zhiyu snapped his eyes open. The first thing he saw was a snowy-white side of a neck. Although he couldn’t see the face, he knew the person beside him was Pei Yuan. He felt an involuntary sense of relief.
The other man was still sleeping; he could hear faint, rhythmic breathing. The room was dim with the curtains drawn. There was a noticeable weight on his waist he was being held tightly in a firm embrace.
Actually, aside from his neck hurting a bit, his whole body felt warm and exceptionally comfortable. Qiao Zhiyu didn’t know what time it was, and he didn’t dare move. He just lay there honestly in the embrace, thinking about last night.
Arguing about not taking medicine… mistaking two lifetimes was one thing, but insisting on sleeping together… He admitted he was somewhat dependent on Pei Yuan, but that was based on their relationship in the previous life. Now, doing this made him feel like a total creep.
He felt he should get up, but the bed was so comfortable… and the other man definitely hadn’t slept well last night. What if he ended up sleep-deprived? Qiao Zhiyu lay there with red ears, slowly becoming drowsy again.
The hand on his waist slowly slid off. The moment the contact vanished, Qiao Zhiyu woke up instantly. Pei Yuan let out a heavy sigh and placed his hand over his forehead.
This sleep had been absolutely miserable for him. In the first half of the night, his heart was burning too much to sleep. When he finally got some drowsiness, he had to get up to take the temperature of the peacefully sleeping patient. He only fell into a hazy sleep after the fever broke. Even then, he wasn’t at peace; his mind was filled with a jumble of disjointed dreams.
Why did I dream about a hospital? Because I was worried he’d fry his brain?
Pei Yuan pinched the bridge of his nose. When he lowered his hand, he found a pair of bright eyes staring at him. Qiao Zhiyu was propped up on one elbow, looking at him without blinking. Frozen in place with messy hair, he looked quite dazed.
The frown on Pei Yuan’s face smoothed out, and a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. He turned his head and asked, “What? Is there a flower on my face?”
Qiao Zhiyu’s ears twitched; he felt uneasy. He managed a dry, “Do you feel unwell?”
“No… I just had a dream.” Pei Yuan lowered his eyes and remained silent for a moment before speaking again. “But I’ve already forgotten it.”
Qiao Zhiyu was curious. What kind of dream makes someone sigh upon waking? “What was it about?”
“A hospital. I dreamed of you.”
Qiao Zhiyu’s thoughts went blank. His mind was a hollow void; only his heart was beating violently.
Why would he dream of a hospital?
