The Eldest Princess' Substitute Husband (Transmigration) - Chapter 32
“Life and Death Separation (Original Owner’s Memories).”
*******
Ever since Song Jinsheng came home late from the estate, she noticed that Wei Luoyi didn’t specifically seek her out to ask her about it. So, she became even more carefree about going out. In just five days, she was out for four, coming back late at night just the same. She also stopped eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner with Wei Luoyi.
While it was true that she did go to the newly renovated shop, she spent more time meeting with Su Ran at a teahouse, catching up and playing with her self-made playing cards. She was having a great time.
She wasn’t stupid. She knew Wei Luoyi might have sent people to inquire about her whereabouts, or maybe even to follow her. But so what?
Whether she did or not, she didn’t care anymore. If she didn’t, her freedom of movement would be even greater. If she couldn’t meet with Su Ran, she could go to the teahouse by herself and confidently take out her phone to watch short videos. If she did send people, then so what if Wei Luoyi knew she was with Su Ran? Maybe… if she couldn’t stand it, she would be the one to bring up the divorce.
And so, one night, after having a few drinks with Su Ran at a restaurant, her head was spinning when she got back to the estate. She was so tired that the moment her body touched the bed, she fell into a deep sleep…
…
System: Wei Luoyi’s favorability detected to have decreased. Main quest progress increased. Reward is being issued…
…
In a haze of consciousness, Song Jinsheng had another dream.
The scene in the dream continued from the last one, but this time, it was from the original owner’s perspective.
She dreamed of a young “Song Jinsheng,” her face blank, being held by the maid Biyu. The maid was running with her until they ran into the gates of the Song estate. After being led to a man, Biyu finally put her down, panting for breath.
The man knelt down in front of “Song Jinsheng.” “Song Jinsheng” also looked up at the strange man.
The man had thick eyebrows and a high nose, and his face was square, but there was a scar on his right cheek that ran from his brow to his jaw. It looked terrifying, startling her so much that she backed up and held onto Biyu’s leg.
But Biyu didn’t have time to comfort her. She said to the man with an anxious expression, “Young Master, Her Highness told me to bring the little princess to you. She begs you to protect the little princess and get her out of the city…”
Hearing this, the man’s expression also became solemn and worried. He raised his hand and stroked “Song Jinsheng’s” face before looking up at Biyu. “That’s a given… What about Her Highness? Has she left the palace?”
“No… Her Highness… she…” As soon as she brought it up, Biyu couldn’t stop herself from sobbing. “The Emperor has already left the palace with the last group of imperial guards. There are only a handful of guards left in the palace, and those barbarians are already fighting outside. Her Highness is a concubine, and even if she escaped… she might be captured by those barbarians… She had no other choice but to entrust the little princess to you in the end…”
“What? Are you saying that dog emperor ran away by himself?!” The man’s eyebrows furrowed tightly, his eyes filled with hatred. The scar on his face twitched as he gritted his teeth.
His eyes were red with anger, and then he let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head. He murmured, “The royal family has always been heartless. My foolish sister…”
The man and Biyu were both grieving, while “Song Jinsheng” stood there, her eyes wide, filled with confusion. The little girl had no idea what kind of life-and-death crisis she was about to face.
But before they could recover from their sorrow, they heard the sound of banging on the gates and roars from outside. Then came the sound of swords clashing.
The man and Biyu were both startled and looked at the source of the sound. “Song Jinsheng” was filled with panic, her little hands tightly clutching Biyu’s clothes.
The old butler of the Song estate rushed to the man. He was so panicked that he stumbled and half-knelt on the ground. “Young Master! The soldiers outside are trying to force their way in! There are too many of them, and our guards can’t hold them off for long. Hurry and leave before they break in!”
“Leave? Am I, Song Qin, a coward who fears death?! I’m not leaving!” The man roared, letting out all the rage in his heart.
He looked at the old butler and ordered in a low voice, “Uncle Gu, go to my room and get my sword.”
“Yes!” The old butler, who had been given an order to save his life, ran off.
With that, Song Qin glanced at Biyu, who was already trembling with fear, and put his finger to his lips, whistling.
As the whistle sounded, two masked men in black appeared out of nowhere and knelt directly in front of Song Qin.
Song Qin looked at Biyu and said solemnly, “Biyu, these two are my personal guards. They will protect you and Asheng (Jinsheng) and lead you out of the city. The Song estate is close to the Northern Forest Mountain. You can leave through the back garden and head west to the mountain. Once you get there, find a place to hide, and I will find you after I’m done here.”
“I understand, sir!”
Biyu quickly nodded. She wiped the tears from her face, picked up the still-dazed “Song Jinsheng,” and followed the two black-clad guards as they ran away.
They left through the back garden of the Song estate and followed Song Qin’s instructions, running all the way west.
While in Biyu’s arms, “Song Jinsheng” still didn’t know what was happening, but she felt a sense of unease. She frowned as she looked at Biyu, whose face was covered in sweat. She didn’t dare to make a sound and just lay quietly on her shoulder.
Song Qin was right. The road to the mountain was sparsely populated. The group reached the foot of the mountain without any trouble.
But just as Biyu was about to let out a sigh of relief, she heard the sound of horses galloping behind her. She turned around in panic and saw a group of soldiers on horseback rushing toward them not far away.
The cavalry had clearly spotted them. Their leader grinned, his eyes wide with rage. He raised his spear and charged toward them—
“Go!!!”
Biyu and the young girl had never seen such a terrifying scene. They were so scared they almost fell to their knees. Fortunately, the two guards reacted quickly. One of them picked up Biyu, and the other picked up “Song Jinsheng.” They immediately used their light-foot skills and flew forward.
But they couldn’t last forever. At first, they were able to get some distance, but the group of soldiers behind them also chased them relentlessly. When they reached the middle of the mountain, the soldiers had already surrounded them, and a fight had to break out.
Although there were many soldiers, the guards that Song Qin had trained were no ordinary people. The two of them protected Biyu and “Song Jinsheng,” holding off waves of attacks from the soldiers.
The sound of swords clashing and the screams of the soldiers as they were struck down by the guards pierced “Song Jinsheng’s” ears. She was so afraid that she covered her ears tightly and buried her face in Biyu’s chest. The uncontrollable fear made her cry, but she didn’t dare to make a sound.
The two guards were skilled fighters, but two fists couldn’t defeat four hands. Moreover, there were dozens of soldiers. After a while, although the two guards had already killed most of them, they were starting to lose.
“Argh—” One of the guards was deeply cut in the arm by a spear. Crimson blood splattered on “Song Jinsheng’s” face, a horrifying sight.
Perhaps the will to protect their country and family was triggered. The two guards, with their bodies already covered in blood, held on until they finally struck down the last soldier. Only then did they let out their last breath and collapse on the ground.
Biyu and “Song Jinsheng,” who were holding each other, stood in the pool of blood, a striking sight among the pile of dead bodies.
Biyu’s eyes were full of tears, but she didn’t even dare to take a deep breath. She was about to take “Song Jinsheng” and leave when a bloody hand grabbed her ankle.
“Ah!!!” Biyu looked down in a panic and saw the soldier’s face covered in blood, his eyes fierce. He tightened his grip on his spear and was about to stab Biyu.
Biyu tried to break free, but the soldier’s grip was too tight. She couldn’t escape, and she was still holding “Song Jinsheng,” so she was helpless.
“Princess, run!” In her desperation, Biyu had no choice but to put “Song Jinsheng” down. After a loud shout, she grabbed the shaft of the spear and desperately blocked it in front of “Song Jinsheng.”
“Song Jinsheng” watched the scene in front of her. Tears uncontrollably poured from her eyes. She stood there in a daze, her fists clenched, shaking her head desperately. She bit her lip, not wanting to make a sound.
“Run! Hurry and run!! You must live well!”
As the words fell, the soldier’s spear also pierced through Biyu’s thin body, stopping right in front of “Song Jinsheng’s” eyes, making her eyes widen in horror.
Biyu, using her last bit of strength, hugged the soldier tightly and pushed him forward as if she were crazy. She slammed him to the ground, picked up one of the dead guard’s swords, held it tightly with both hands, and plunged it into his chest. Blood gushed out.
“Song Jinsheng” looked at Biyu, who was dead in front of her. She cried, her mind blank. She couldn’t make a sound. After taking two steps back, she forced herself to stop crying and ran forward.
Her small body weaved through the forest. She ran tirelessly, not knowing where she was going, only that she couldn’t stop.
She kept running and running… She didn’t know for how long, until she reached a slope. Her foot slipped, her small body lost its balance, and she rolled down the slope into a ditch.
In a flash, her head hit a rock. A sharp pain and a wave of dizziness came over her. The scene in front of her slowly blurred…
She passed out.
When her consciousness returned, she was awakened by the cold.
Cold rain poured down in the forest, landing on her eyelids. Her entire body was stiff and cold, as if frozen, and she couldn’t move.
She used all her strength to prop up her small body. Raindrops ran down her long lashes. She couldn’t even open her eyes. She could only stand in place and look around.
It was already dusk. The sky was gloomy, and the rain was pouring… as if everything was hinting at the decline of the dynasty…
“Song Jinsheng” was soaked, but she had to drag her heavy clothes and keep moving forward. Her tears and the rain had long mixed together.
She looked up, her eyes filled with confusion…
*******
The moment Song Jinsheng’s consciousness came back, she felt that her eyes were wet.
The sorrow of separation by life and death from the dream seemed to still cling to her. It was just a dream, but it was so deeply etched in her memory. She felt as if a heavy stone was weighing on her heart, making it difficult to breathe.
The moment she opened her eyes, the tears that had already filled them immediately slid down her cheeks.
And before she could even process her emotions, the face of Wei Luoyi came into view.
Wei Luoyi was sitting on her bed, her gaze soft as she looked at her. Her face had shed its usual coldness, and all that remained was gentleness.
Their eyes met, and Song Jinsheng was dazed for a moment.
Was she still in the dream? How could Wei Luoyi be here?
“You’re awake?” After a long moment of staring, Wei Luoyi finally parted her red lips.
Song Jinsheng answered her, her expression blank, letting the tears continue to run down her cheeks.
Wei Luoyi’s eyes flickered. She looked at the wet tear stains on her face and frowned. The emotion that flowed through her eyes was something even she wasn’t aware of.
She raised her hand, cupped one side of Song Jinsheng’s face, and with a gentle touch, wiped away the tear that was about to fall from the corner of her eye.
She opened her lips again, her voice as soft as a whisper.
“Did you… have a nightmare?”
