- Chapter 6 - The Seizure When You’re Worried Sick About The Person You Love, You Don’t Even Have Time To Care About Yourself.
After finishing a bowl of smooth, tender omurice, the blood rushed to her stomach, making An Ruoning feel lightheaded and drowsy.
Jian Qing haphazardly cleared the dining table before letting out a yawn. She blinked, squeezing out a few tiny tears, and then took An Ruoning’s arm to lead her toward the bedroom. “Since we finally don’t have to work overtime, do you want to watch a show?”
An Ruoning replied, “Don’t worry about me. Let’s just listen to music. Didn’t your favorite singer just release a new song?”
Jian Qing leaned in and looked at An Ruoning, her eyes full of affection. “You’re so sweet.”
An Ruoning gently pulled her hand away from Jian Qing’s grasp. She walked to the wardrobe and pulled out a thick, light green bedside pillow, placing it at the head of the double bed. After pressing down on it to make sure it was comfortable enough to lean against, she invited Jian Qing over to rest.
Jian Qing turned on the Bluetooth speaker, tossed her phone onto the nightstand, and sank into the soft cushion on the bed. An Ruoning kept a bit of distance, sitting somewhat stiffly against the headboard while scrolling through her phone.
Melodic music filled the bedroom. Jian Qing was very relaxed, gradually letting her head slide down to rest on An Ruoning’s shoulder. An Ruoning purposefully lowered her posture so Jian Qing could lean more comfortably. Feeling An Ruoning’s cooperation, Jian Qing’s face beamed with happiness.
After a moment, Jian Qing propped up her upper body, closed her eyes, and turned toward An Ruoning to catch her scent. When she opened her eyes again, a smile danced on her lips. She asked in an extremely tender voice, “Today… is it okay?”
An Ruoning frowned slightly. Jian Qing immediately knew the answer was still no, so she didn’t push. She leaned back against the cushion, letting herself go and enjoying the pure bliss of the music.
A while later, An Ruoning suddenly put down her phone and climbed over Jian Qing. She propped herself up with her palms, hovering over Jian Qing, and forced out a few words. “I’ll do it.”
Jian Qing raised her eyebrows. “What made you think of that?”
An Ruoning bit her lower lip, her expression solemn as she explained, “I’ve never been able to do that part, but we can’t go on like this forever. I’ve thought about it, we’re both girls anyway, so who is on top or bottom doesn’t really matter. Besides, it’s been so long, you must have… needs.”
Jian Qing let out a few laughs, slipped out from under An Ruoning’s “siege,” and helped her sit back down properly. “Let me ask you, do you have any desire for me?”
An Ruoning was silent.
Jian Qing continued, “Do you like me?”
An Ruoning remained silent.
“You don’t like me, and you don’t have any desire for me, yet you want to do that kind of thing with me? Don’t you think that’s very irresponsible? Don’t tell me your current goal in life is to be a scumbag.”
An Ruoning hurried to clarify, “No! That’s not what I meant! I… I just feel like I owe you so much. If I could do something to make up for it, like helping you solve… some… needs.”
“Silly girl, love is a spontaneous impulse between two people. It’s not a relationship of service and being served.” After saying this, a flash of surprise crossed Jian Qing’s eyes. “Why do I feel like you’ve always defined being together as a service-based relationship?”
An Ruoning’s body shivered, and she quickly lowered her head to hide her panic. “No… I haven’t… no.”
Jian Qing handed An Ruoning a soft candy from the nightstand. “Hey, can you tell me what exactly happened to you?”
An Ruoning took the candy and gripped it tightly in her palm, making the plastic wrapper crinkle loudly. “Can I… not say?”
Jian Qing replied, “Of course! What you want to say or don’t want to say, what you want to do or don’t want to do, that is your freedom. Why do you have to ask for my opinion?”
An Ruoning nodded timidly.
Jian Qing said, “Alright, if there are unhappy things, just let them pass. Don’t think about it. Anyway, no one can bully you anymore.”
An Ruoning whispered, “Mm, thank you for helping me so much.”
By now, Jian Qing’s entire body had slid down onto the bed. Drowsiness was taking over, and her voice became even softer. “A thank you from a beauty must be accepted. Not only accepted, but saved up. Don’t put pressure on yourself. I will wait for you very, very patiently. I can wait as long as it takes, and even if I can’t wait until then, it’s okay.”
Jian Qing’s voice gradually faded, and her eyelids could no longer stay open. “Go to sleep.”
A phone vibrated inside Mu Shan’s car. She connected the Bluetooth, and Mr. Wei’s voice filled the cabin.
Mr. Wei asked, “President Mu? Are you busy? I can never find you these days.”
Lately, Mr. Wei had been using various ways to hint that Mu Shan should come to the office more often. Mu Shan, of course, wasn’t going to listen. Even if she didn’t mind the shabbiness of the office, working in an environment where everyone was lazy and idle was simply inefficient.
Mu Shan didn’t bother with polite small talk and said bluntly, “Mr. Wei, I am not going to the office. If you are very dissatisfied with this…”
Mr. Wei quickly interrupted, fearing the company’s only pillar was about to quit. “No, no, no! How could I be dissatisfied? Not at all! I’m here to tell you some good news! We got word from Babylon. They’re planning to invest a hundred million in us, with sixty million in the first phase!”
Why would a large investment firm with extensive experience invest so much money in a broken-down company? The logic didn’t hold up, there had to be a catch. Although Mu Shan didn’t know Babylon’s true goal yet, she certainly wasn’t as happy as Mr. Wei.
The silence on her end made Mr. Wei, who was ecstatic and waiting to celebrate with her, anxious. “President Mu? Did you hear what I said? A hundred million!”
Turning one more corner would lead to the suburban pet park. Mu Shan didn’t want work to ruin the precious time of her third meeting with An Ruoning, so she ended the call with Mr. Wei abruptly. “We’ll talk tomorrow. In short, don’t get excited too early. Goodbye.”
As soon as she turned the corner, Mu Shan saw two police cars, one large and one small, parked at the entrance of the pet park. The main gate was half open. Mu Shan immediately sensed something was wrong. she floored the gas to reach the gate, jumped out of the car, and ran inside.
The front yard with the swimming pool was empty but seemed fine. It was a weekday, so the lack of people was normal. Mu Shan ran through the grass toward the backyard where the dog kennels were. As she approached, the sounds of heated shouting and the banging of walls being smashed became very clear.
Mu Shan rushed into the backyard. A flying stone about the size of a palm came from nowhere and hit her right on the shin.
Mu Shan barely felt the pain, because right in the center of the storm was the person she cared about most, An Ruoning. When you’re worried sick about the person you love, you don’t even have time to care about yourself.
Up ahead, several dog houses built with bricks and cement had been smashed to pieces. A few blind and lame dogs were wandering timidly over the rubble. An Ruoning and a dark-skinned, tall middle-aged man were standing in front of the ruins, arguing with the police.
An Ruoning, who looked tiny in front of the men, was being stubborn. One moment she tried to block the middle-aged man, and the next she crouched down with her arms spread to protect the frightened dogs.
Under the police’s orders, a man holding a large sledgehammer swung it toward the next dog house. With a loud crash, a German Shepherd named Bei Bei suddenly lunged out, letting out a thunderous roar at the police.
Two or three officers grabbed the batons at their waists and walked toward Bei Bei. An Ruoning immediately ran forward regardless of the danger, forcefully pushing the officer in the lead. “What are you doing?!”
The officer barked, “If you continue to obstruct us in the line of duty, we’ll take you in too!”
An Ruoning was extremely emotional. She pushed the officer again and yelled, “I won’t let you hurt Bei Bei! All of you, get out!”
The officer who was pushed also lost his temper. His face turned a dark red, looking like he was ready to get physical. The other officers behind him also got ready, surrounding An Ruoning.
Seeing this, Mu Shan immediately ran forward, grabbed An Ruoning from the circle, and pulled her behind her back. Then, Mu Shan took a pack of high-quality cigarettes from her pocket, pulled one out, and handed it to the officer An Ruoning had pushed. While she didn’t bow or scrape, her attempt to appease them was very clear. “I’m so sorry, the young lady is young and doesn’t know better.”
The officer refused the cigarette, but his attention had been diverted by Mu Shan, and his attitude softened slightly. “This constitutes assaulting an officer.”
Mu Shan said, “I am truly sorry to everyone, my sincerest apologies. Are you hurt anywhere? Health comes first, how about we go to the hospital to check it out?”
The officer softened further. “That won’t be necessary.”
The demolition of the dog houses continued. An Ruoning was still furious, her chest heaving heavily and her eyes bloodshot.
Mu Shan glanced back at An Ruoning and commanded in a low voice, “Take the dogs somewhere else first.”
An Ruoning argued, “There are so many dogs, how can I…”
The middle-aged man, whose lips were somewhat pale, patted An Ruoning and advised, “She’s right. You take one group out first. Leave the rest to me. Xiao Di and the others should be here soon.”
An Ruoning looked at Mu Shan. Mu Shan nodded, then turned back to continue talking with the police.
During the conversation, Mu Shan noticed that the police didn’t say anything when An Ruoning led the dogs away. She finally breathed a sigh of relief.
