- Chapter 1 - On the Eve of Crossing Over
Huazhong Academy, East District, Dormitory 7302
Snap.
Without warning, a tablet hit the floor beside Yi Xuan’s desk. The sound of the impact was jarringly loud in the quiet dormitory.
He startled, his typing interrupted by the noise. He looked up, confused, his gaze landing squarely on the glowing tablet screen now resting on the floor.
He frowned slightly, but in the next second, he was captivated by the content on the screen.
Hmm… en.
Wait, why did the plot of this novel look so familiar?
It felt like he had seen it somewhere before…?
Hiss!
A flash of realization struck him. Thinking of something, he looked up feeling guilty, and as expected, saw his roommates gathered in a circle around him.
His pupils contracted. Recalling everything, he scrambled to stand up and escape but he failed.
It’s over. I’m cooked.
As he was pressed back into his chair, Yi Xuan hurriedly closed the browser window containing his writing draft and forced a stiff smile, trying to bluff his way out.
“Youngest, does the novel on that screen look familiar to you?” Xu Shize, standing at the front with his arms crossed, was the first to speak. He watched with amusement as the guy on the chair pretended to be busy.
“Huh? I have no idea.” Yi Xuan tried to play dumb. “Are you asking about this novel? You might be asking the wrong person. Even though I’m a writer, I don’t read every novel. I think I’ve heard of the one on the screen, it’s been popular lately but I’ve never actually read it.”
“Oh? Is that so? Then why did I see someone’s novel draft yesterday that looked exactly like the final chapter of this book?”
“Uh… maybe it’s a coincidence? Or just by chance? I haven’t read it, so I really don’t know…” Yi Xuan kept his head down, continuing to act busy, though he was already sweating profusely.
“Oh, well that’s quite a coincidence, isn’t it? To have the plot points clash so perfectly.”
“Ha, haha, yeah, it is.” Yi Xuan rubbed his nose, feeling even more guilty. But from the side, another voice came out gloomily: “And is it also a coincidence that the six main characters in this book have the exact same names as the six of us?”
“That really is quite a coincidence, isn’t it?” Jing Junyan chuckled—a laugh that seemed to carry no emotion at all.
However, the sound sent a chill straight to Yi Xuan’s brain, making him shudder.
“I… um…”
Yi Xuan tried to struggle, but Chi Yu, standing right next to him, stepped forward and pinned down his restless impulses. “I happened to pass by you last time and saw the title of the novel you’re currently writing.”
Yi Xuan: “…”
“You should know that this kind of behavior counts as an invasion of privacy, right?”
How does Chi Yu’s 36-degree mouth manage to say such cold things?
Yi Xuan gave up. He leaned back, staring blankly at the ceiling, and let out a long, heavy sigh. “Fine, I wrote it. But how on earth did you guys find out about this? I thought I hid it pretty well.”
“And aren’t you guys supposed to never pay attention to these kinds of things?”
“I stumbled upon it by accident. The title looked familiar, so I clicked out of curiosity. The first thing I saw was your own name. I was going to wait until I finished reading to mock you, but then I realized all six of us were there, perfectly accounted for. You didn’t leave a single one of us out,” Ying Jue, standing at the back, finally couldn’t help but laugh as he spoke up.
“I knew there was something weird about this kid last year. You guys kept saying it was just because he was writing a novel, but it turns out he was observing us back then, using us as his free source material,” Xiao Qianyue said from the side, a sudden realization dawning on him.
“Hey, you can’t say it like that. Who knew this guy was brewing up something so big? Besides, writers don’t exactly have the most stable mental states, right? Wait, that’s not right either. In our dorm, who actually has a stable mental state? So, if you guys do something weird in the future, I won’t be surprised,” Xu Shize interjected suddenly.
“Hey, hey, stop with the generalization! I’m perfectly normal,” Ying Jue added timely.
But Xu Shize just glanced at him and let out a laugh, giving him a look that said, “Forget it, I’m not even going to bother talking to you.”
“Hey, no, Old Xu, what’s with that look? Are you questioning me?”
“Ah, a certain art student who shouts every day about blowing up the world and killing everyone on the planet, now claiming he has the most stable emotions. How is that any different from that other guy—who was studying Chinese language and nearly went insane during finals week—plugging wires into his textbooks on the last night and connecting them to himself, claiming it would help him memorize everything?”
Ying Jue: “…”
Yi Xuan: “…”
Thanks, I feel personally attacked.
“Pffthahaha, two birds with one stone. Chi Yu, your talent for roasting people hasn’t faded over the years, hahaha!” Xiao Qianyue had been watching the whole scene and was now laughing so hard he couldn’t stand straight.
Ying Jue: “…”
Yi Xuan: “…”
Sometimes, the desire to kill someone is hard to hide.
At this moment, Jing Junyan tapped on the table again, drawing everyone’s attention back. “I think we should pause the discussion on mental states. Regarding the novel, does our great author Yi have anything to say?”
Yi Xuan: “…”
Having thought he escaped, he started shivering again.
“…”
What else is there to explain? You’ve already stripped everything bare.
“Alright, it seems you can’t think of any excuses. Since that’s the case…”
Jing Junyan paused, and Xu Shize took over: “Since that’s the case, you get to be our dormitory’s human punching bag. Wait, no wasn’t it your turn last time? That works out perfectly. You can do two days’ worth. Besides, we haven’t practiced the new martial arts routines from PE class with you guys yet.”
They were in their second year of their Master’s program. For the sake of the students’ health, the academy had mandatory PE classes since freshman year one class, every afternoon, and no excuses allowed. Everyone, from every grade, had to participate, so it was truly fair. Their school’s PE wasn’t like the filler classes in middle or high school; every session taught real skills. While they couldn’t all claim to be black belts, they had been training for six years, and at least taking on ten people at once was doable, mainly for self-defense.
“I think that works. And throw in three days of meals for us too. Just thinking about how you made all that money selling us out makes me annoyed,” Ying Jue chimed in.
“Wait, no, Xu Shize you’re a sports major, and you want to spar with me?”
“No way, I was wrong! I don’t want to get beaten up!” Yi Xuan cried, his face twisted in despair.
“You don’t get to refuse. Who told you to be so cheeky, using us as free material for your novel?”
“You can’t say it like that either! I wrote myself in too, didn’t I?”
“Stop talking to this guy. It’s faster to just take action. You know how sharp his tongue is keep talking, and your slow brain might get brainwashed by him,” Jing Junyan said, leaning against the table and adjusting his glasses.
“Let’s go, let’s go. It’s not sunny today, might as well go to the outdoor stadium across the way and practice,” Ying Jue nudged Yi Xuan’s shoulder. “Short-term pain is better than long-term pain; just give in.”
Yi Xuan slumped in his chair, looking lifeless, as if he couldn’t face reality. “No way! I don’t want to go out! I’m a vampire, I die in the light! Besides, I haven’t finished the extra chapter I promised to write today!”
“Go, go, I don’t know how you don’t get tired of using that same excuse every day. ‘I want to write, I need to write’, don’t even think about running away this time.”
As soon as Ying Jue finished speaking, he stepped forward and grabbed one of Yi Xuan’s arms. The others, who had been watching the show, helped out as well. One on each side, they tried to drag him away by force.
“Hey, hey! You guys can’t just force a decent man like this! Don’t pull there, hahahaha, that tickles! I was wrong, I was wrong, let go, I’ll walk on my own!” Yi Xuan lost his temper from being tugged around. He struggled, realized it was useless, and surrendered, letting them do as they pleased.
Just then, an accident occurred. It was unclear who slipped, but Yi Xuan was yanked off-balance. The others holding him, caught off guard, stumbled and fell down with him.
At that moment, the tablet that had been sitting on the edge of the desk was knocked to the floor by the commotion. In the next second, the screen, which had been displaying the novel’s page, emitted a blinding light so intense it illuminated the entire dormitory…
In the chaos, someone shouted, “What the f*ck!” But in just a split second, after the glare, the dormitory returned to silence.
The six men were gone.
