- Chapter 10 - The Quarrel
Sitting in the car and looking at the sky full of lights outside, Lou Qingshuang felt as if the entire world was freezing cold, as if there was nowhere she could lay down the exhaustion in her heart.
Lou Qingshuang closed her eyes and let out a long sigh in her heart; now, she had crossed paths with Liu Yu once again.
The troubles within the company were still unresolved, and now Liu Yu had reappeared.
Thinking of Liu Yu made Lou Qingshuang’s heart tremble slightly. The stern aloofness and overbearing aura Liu Yu possessed were well-hidden, yet she carried an air of loneliness about her. Without a doubt, Liu Yu was beautiful—her beauty carried a sharp, hardened edge, embodying the supreme aura of a ruler. Yet, she could also be tolerant and peaceful, making her immensely charming. It was precisely because of this that Lou Qingshuang felt bewildered: what could a person like that possibly see in her?
This helping hand made Lou Qingshuang terrified. Once Xinyu decided to pull out later on, Wanshuang would truly plummet to rock bottom. The only reason Wanshuang could still maintain its reputation right now was largely because Xinyu was willing to cooperate with them during this chaotic time.
As the amber light cast upon the car window, Lou Qingshuang opened her eyes to look at the bustling night. For now, she could only take it one step at a time.
“Maybe… it really is time to go to a Daoist temple to pray,” Lou Qingshuang lowered her eyes and murmured softly.
Bai Wan received a message from Lou Qingshuang: [Have you found a Daoist temple that cuts off bad karma/ill-fated relationships?]
Bai Wan, who was currently reviewing surveillance footage, immediately typed back: [???? You ran into her again????]
[Yeah.]
That single word conveyed the entirety of Lou Qingshuang’s exhaustion.
[We are going tomorrow!!!] Bai Wan sent a voice message back, her tone filled with gritted teeth.
Listening to her best friend’s voice, a faint smile brushed across Lou Qingshuang’s otherwise cold and distant face.
Meanwhile, Shen Yue, who was resting at Lou Qingshuang’s home, lay on Lou Qingshuang’s bed. She scrolled through her phone screen, her expression far from pleasant.
Shen Qiao and Aunt Wu were chatting. Shen Qiao’s brow was furrowed with anxiety as she watched the television absentmindedly.
Aunt Wu glanced at her and handed a peeled pear to Shen Qiao. “Ma’am, have some fruit.”
Shen Qiao took the pear. “Thank you.”
“Ma’am, Ms. Lou will be back shortly, so there’s no need to worry,” Aunt Wu hinted comfortingly.
Shen Qiao let out a silent sigh. She looked toward Shuangshuang’s bedroom, completely baffled by what those two were thinking. They were clearly engaged, yet Shen Yue’s parents had never reached out to their side even once.
Lou Qingshuang stood by the roadside to bid farewell to her assistant. “Thank you for your hard work today.”
“It’s just what I should do, President Lou. Please go inside and get some rest early,” the little assistant replied, revealing a round face. When she smiled, two little dimples appeared on her plump cheeks.
“I will come to pick you up early tomorrow morning.” The little assistant waved at Lou Qingshuang and drove away.
Lou Qingshuang lifted her dress and walked toward the residential area. The crisp clicking of her high heels echoed softly. The lush greenery of the neighborhood provided excellent privacy and ensured the quiet environment everyone needed.
The streetlights stretched Lou Qingshuang’s shadow long across the ground. She looked up and noticed that her bedroom light was on. Standing downstairs, she quietly gazed up at her room.
For a moment, she felt a sudden reluctance to go back inside. Lou Qingshuang stood downstairs for a few minutes, pushing down all the frustrations in her mind before finally gathering her spirits to head up.
[Shuangshuang, where are you? I miss you.] A message popped up on her phone.
Lou Qingshuang clicked the screen off and walked slowly toward the elevator. The rhythmic clack-clack of her high heels sounded exceptionally hollow, echoing through the space.
When Liu Yu returned home, it was as quiet as ever. She lived alone in her apartment; her bodyguards and personal assistant lived right across the hall.
She unlocked the door, stepped into the foyer, and put down her coat and keys.
Sitting on the sofa, Liu Yu looked over the unresolved matters of the day before getting up and heading straight into the study.
When Lou Qingshuang opened her front door, she happened to see Shen Yue making her mother laugh, a natural smile gracing Shen Yue’s face.
“Mom, A-Yue, I’m back.” As soon as Lou Qingshuang spoke, everyone’s eyes locked onto her, with Shen Yue staring completely transfixed.
“You look so beautiful today.” Shen Yue stood up and walked toward her, her eyes never wavering from Lou Qingshuang.
A pale purple chiffon gown, a coat draped over her shoulders, and the gems at her high collar gleaming brilliantly under the lights—Shen Yue swallowed hard instinctively. Her gaze looked intense enough to swallow Lou Qingshuang whole as she murmured in a deep voice, “You look stunning tonight.”
Lou Qingshuang smiled gently. “Thank you.”
Shen Yue’s gaze then drifted to Lou Qingshuang’s missing lipstick. Her eyes paused for a fraction of a second. She took a look at the smiling Lou Qingshuang, then retracted her gaze.
Shen Qiao also looked at her daughter with eyes full of admiration. “My, my, my, Ms. Lou, you look gorgeous today! Just like a little fairy.”
Aunt Wu stepped forward with a radiant smile, walking a circle around Lou Qingshuang, which happened to nudge Shen Yue’s hand away.
“You really look like a celebrity on television, just too beautiful.” Aunt Wu was beaming with joy like a little sun.
Lou Qingshuang smiled along with her. “Aunt Wu, you praise me too much.”
Shen Qiao also stood up, and Lou Qingshuang quickly rushed over to support her. “Mom.”
“I’m fine. Are you tired today?” Shen Qiao patted the back of Lou Qingshuang’s hand and asked gently.
“I’m alright. I just chatted with a business senior about Wanshuang’s future development,” Lou Qingshuang said softly.
“Has Wanshuang’s issue been resolved?” Shen Qiao looked at her daughter with deep concern.
“It will be resolved very soon, Mom. Don’t worry.” Lou Qingshuang leaned her head against her mother’s shoulder, finally finding a place to rest her weary heart.
Shen Yue stood to the side, watching Lou Qingshuang longingly, wishing to speak with her.
“Go on, Yueyue has been waiting for you all evening.” Shen Qiao spoke with a smile as she patted her daughter’s hand. Her eyes flickered as she looked at the top of Lou Qingshuang’s head, suppressing the words in her heart. Her child already had too much on her plate; she shouldn’t add to her burdens.
“Wait for me in the living room for a bit,” Lou Qingshuang blinked at Shen Yue. Receiving the signal, Shen Yue nodded.
Shen Qiao looked at Shen Yue’s attractive face. Shen Yue was a highly capable and sharp female Alpha; she carried a subtle, inherent assertiveness, and her eyes were filled entirely with rationality.
For some reason, Shen Qiao always felt uneasy about her daughter being with Shen Yue.
Sigh.
Shen Qiao let out a long sigh in her mind. She truly didn’t know whether this would turn out well or badly in the future.
Sensing Shen Qiao’s gaze, Shen Yue turned around with a smile and asked softly, “Would you like some water, Auntie? I can pour some for you.”
“No need, there’s still water in my cup.” Shen Qiao picked up her cup and declined with a polite smile.
Late into the night, Shen Yue held Lou Qingshuang and wanted to kiss her, but Lou Qingshuang pulled away. Looking utterly exhausted, Lou Qingshuang leaned against her. “I’m very tired. Just let me lean on you.”
Shen Yue held her without saying a word. After a long while, the light reflected sharply off her glasses, hiding her expression as she slowly spoke, “If it doesn’t work out, just shut Wanshuang down. My salary is more than enough to support you and Auntie.”
Lou Qingshuang straightened up and stared into the eyes behind the lenses. Shen Yue was entirely serious; there was nothing but cold, rational analysis in her eyes.
Lou Qingshuang’s expression turned icy. She narrowed her eyes, her gaze becoming sharp and intensely authoritative. As the two locked eyes, Shen Yue did not back down a single step.
“We are going to get married sooner or later anyway,” Shen Yue stated.
Lou Qingshuang raised her hand to cut her off, her voice dominant and unyielding. “Shen Yue, to this day, I have never even met your parents. As for marriage from the moment you uttered those words, this wedding can be postponed indefinitely.
Lou Qingshuang pulled herself out of Shen Yue’s embrace and walked away with a cold face.
Shen Yue stared in sheer shock at the furious Lou Qingshuang, her own expression turning cold as her gaze darkened, watching Lou Qingshuang walk out of the room.
