Chapter 74: I Don’t Like to Force Things
The first day of the training included registration in the morning, classes in the afternoon, and a team-building ‘icebreaker’ activity in the evening.
Ying Zhi’an was unaware of the evening activity and had scheduled Song Xidan to bring over some documents that needed signing and discuss the details of some recent cases.
After dinner, the two returned to their room, and Song Moqiu went into the bathroom.
Ying Zhi’an, who was packing her laptop into her bag to leave, looked up and saw Song Moqiu had changed into sportswear. “Are you exercising tonight? Does the academy have a gym?”
“There’s an icebreaker activity tonight. A notice was sent in the group asking us to wear clothes suitable for activities.”
“Huh?”
Ying Zhi’an pulled out her phone and realized she had added too many clients on her social apps, often pushing notifications from the training group down.
“Icebreaker activity…” Ying Zhi’an smiled helplessly. “It’s team-building, isn’t it? I haven’t done team-building since college.”
“Me neither, but I’m a little excited. It’s a good way to digest the food.”
Song Moqiu said this with a smile in her eyes.
She remembered one of the activities, which felt like a long-awaited opportunity.
As for Ying Zhi’an, while she found these activities a bit boring, since she was attending the training, she had to abide by the academy’s arrangements.
So, Ying Zhi’an messaged Song Xidan, asking her to come over later, and then rummaged through her bag for a loose pair of pants.
The Judges Academy had a large sports field. It was sunset now, and the row of lights around the field had been turned on, making it very bright.
The icebreaker activity was hosted by the temporary class committee. The class leader, a judge from the Provincial Higher Court, announced: “The goal of this activity is to promote understanding among participants through a series of team cooperation games. Teams are divided by floor into four groups. The top three teams that earn the most points will receive a small gift prepared by our committee!”
Ying Zhi’an and Song Moqiu stood together, still looking at the icebreaker schedule the committee had posted in the group.
“The jump rope segment is mandatory for everyone, but for the three-legged race, has our team decided who will participate?” Ying Zhi’an asked.
Song Moqiu replied, “It’s a three-legged relay race, so everyone has to participate.”
Then, she thought for a moment and added, “It’s pairing up the two people in the same room.”
“Tsk…” Ying Zhi’an slowly frowned, recalling her special ability.
There’s no way to avoid this, is there… what should I do? As Ying Zhi’an pondered this, she heard Song Moqiu ask, “I don’t like to force things.”
“What?” Ying Zhi’an was stunned and looked at Song Moqiu, finding that Song Moqiu’s face had turned cold again, reverting to the indifferent and aloof state she had when they first met.
Song Moqiu found that “tsk” incredibly grating and felt very uneasy. Recalling the series of evasive details from the day, she suppressed her temper, which was about to flare up, and said, “If you really don’t want to, I can tell the team leader that you hurt your foot and are inconvenient to participate.”
Ying Zhi’an was naturally unaware of Song Moqiu’s inner thoughts and thought Song Moqiu was being very understanding and that her suggestion was excellent. She immediately praised her sincerely: “That’s a great idea!”
Song Moqiu lowered her head, hiding the hurt in her eyes, not wanting to lose composure. She dropped a sentence, “Then I’ll go find the team leader.”
She quickly turned away, no longer engaging in dialogue with Ying Zhi’an.
“I’ll go with you!” Ying Zhi’an called out, but Song Moqiu hurried away without stopping.
There were many people present, and the scene was still chaotic. Ying Zhi’an was blocked by a group of people, and when she managed to push through and look again, Song Moqiu had already vanished.
Ying Zhi’an had no choice but to wait where she was.
When the activity was about to start and the team leaders began gathering members to assign tasks, Ying Zhi’an still didn’t see Song Moqiu.
Their team leader, a judge from the Intermediate Court, finished distributing the red ropes for tying legs and turned to Ying Zhi’an. “Didn’t you hurt your foot? Don’t stand, go sit over there.”
“Team Leader, have you seen Song Moqiu? Where is she?”
“Moqiu said since you couldn’t participate in this segment anyway, she, as your partner, didn’t need to either, so she went back first.”
“She was quite interested…” Ying Zhi’an recalled Song Moqiu’s earlier words and belatedly realized something was off. “Team Leader, then I’ll go back first too, and I’ll be back for the ring toss segment later.”
“Alright, but you and Moqiu must participate in the ring toss,” the team leader was easy to talk to.
Ying Zhi’an slowly left the field first, mainly to demonstrate that her foot was indeed unwell, aiming for a full performance.
Once out of the field, she sped up her pace towards the room, but Song Moqiu wasn’t there.
Ying Zhi’an thought for a moment and sent Song Moqiu a message on WeChat: Moqiu, where are you?
Song Moqiu was standing on the leisure platform on the fourth floor of the academy, letting the wind blow on her. Seeing the message from Ying Zhi’an, this time she lacked the motivation to reply instantly.
She looked at the lights of the tall buildings, feeling the wind pierce through the skyscrapers from all directions, and sighed softly. Some truly unpleasant memories surged into her mind, and she murmured to herself, “How did I put myself in this situation again…”
The sports field was bustling with noise, and bursts of laughter occasionally drifted over.
Song Moqiu stood in the wind, feeling a chill, and she hugged herself, yet didn’t know where the chill came from.
Suddenly, footsteps came from behind, and she heard the voice of Ying Zhi’an, the person who made her heart endlessly fluctuate, asking breathlessly: “You’re actually here!”
Ying Zhi’an liked standing in open spaces to feel the wind when she was alone, so following the system’s frequent remarks about their similarities, she checked the platform, and indeed, Song Moqiu was there.
“What’s wrong? Did something happen?” Ying Zhi’an walked a few steps closer, standing a comfortable distance away from Song Moqiu. She still didn’t realize she was the culprit and thought Song Moqiu had received some bad news or encountered something unpleasant.
Song Moqiu let out a cold snort, carried away by the wind, leaving only her aloofness.
Ying Zhi’an was suddenly treated so coldly and felt utterly confused.
“Or…” she carefully asked, “Or do you prefer to be alone quietly right now to process something bad?”
Song Moqiu sighed deeply, “Go away.”
“Okay, I’ll leave then.”
Saying she would leave, she actually left. Song Moqiu warned herself not to look back, straining her ears to hear Ying Zhi’an’s footsteps gradually fade away until they disappeared.
And with that, her mood plummeted to the bottom.
Song Moqiu had too many confusions, which made her emotions feel like a roller coaster. She wanted to question Ying Zhi’an why she had initially said inexplicable things, why she had conveyed information about being a kindred spirit, yet was now avoiding her like the plague!
But she lacked the courage, so she had been enduring it all day.
Until Ying Zhi’an’s footsteps disappeared, she finally couldn’t help but curse, “Ying Zhi’an! What do you mean! Why do you hate me!”
“I don’t hate you…” Ying Zhi’an, who had quietly turned back, was stunned.
Song Moqiu was startled by the sudden voice. She turned to look but slipped her foot and nearly fell.
“Watch out!” Ying Zhi’an quickly grabbed Song Moqiu, preventing her from falling. With that pull, a memory not belonging to her flashed before Ying Zhi’an’s eyes!
[A Memory Flashback]
“How could she be like that? That’s so disgusting.”
“Don’t touch her! Or you’ll get sick too!”
“Is it that kind of sickness?”
“Yeah, yeah, don’t touch her!”
“Her deskmate is so miserable, what if they accidentally touch?”
“Exactly, don’t go near her, you’ll become a freak too!”
Various voices whispered, yet so openly.
Song Moqiu, with her student-style bob haircut and wearing a school uniform, walked in expressionlessly.
The classroom, which had been buzzing with whispers, immediately fell silent. However, the eyes of the students all focused on Song Moqiu, filled with curiosity, contempt, disdain, and all sorts of emotions.
They all conveyed a form of silent violence and the belief that Song Moqiu was an outsider/freak.
