- Chapter 3 - The First Stage of the Mission
Shen Muyun lifted his gaze and happened to meet the eyes of the man across from him. There was an uncanny seven-part resemblance between them. He smiled involuntarily. This must be the eldest young master whom everyone pampered and held in high esteem. He appeared gentle and refined, yet within the original host’s memories, information regarding him was almost non-existent. He did not know why that was the case.
Seeing that Shen Muyun had remained silent for a long time, Shen Liuyun placed the clothes he was holding onto the nearby sofa. He gently touched Shen Muyun’s forehead and, finding nothing abnormal, adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses with one hand.
“Muyun, what is wrong with the clothes? Are you feeling unwell, or do you want to rest?”
Shen Muyun immediately withdrew his gaze. Looking into Shen Liuyun’s eyes, he inexplicably felt a sense of oppression, though it vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
“Oh, it is nothing. It is just that the clothes are too wet and uncomfortable sticking to my skin.”
“Understood. If you need anything, contact me at any time.”
Shen Muyun nodded politely at Shen Liuyun. Not knowing whether the man was a friend or foe, he could not afford to be reckless for the time being. He nodded with a smile, picked up the clothes from the sofa, turned sideways, and left through the side passageway.
Shen Liuyun watched his retreating back intently, pursed his lips, and revealed a meaningful smirk.
Reaching his door, Shen Muyun locked it firmly. He took off his soaked clothes and, after hesitating for a moment, shook out the clothes he had just brought from the sofa. They carried only the sharp, cold scent of cedar. Was Shen Liuyun a friend or an enemy…
Fragments of memory scattered in Shen Muyun’s mind: in high school, he had been ostracized because of Shen Liuyun, yet he had foolishly pleaded for him, only to face even harsher exclusion. When a contract went wrong, he had acted as a scapegoat to protect Shen Liuyun’s image, only to be backstabbed in the end…
He could not worry about that now; the sticky, wet feeling on his skin was unbearable. He turned and entered the bathroom. Outside the glass porthole, there was a view of the sea. A school of fish happened to swim by, carefree and glistening with silver light. They moved with the rise and fall of the cruise ship, and from time to time, one could even see scallops struggling to swim upward.
The quiet atmosphere brought him peace of mind. He closed his eyes, digesting everything that had just happened.
He thought of the system that had shut down. In other transmigrated stories, the system was a great tool that helped the host reach the pinnacle of life. Why did his have an off mode? Holding onto the hope of testing it, Shen Muyun whispered, “System, are you there?”
A pair of light blue wings unfolded, and a lazy voice sounded, “Phew, is there something, host? It is the middle of the night. Staying up late is not a good habit. Only good sleep can keep you in a good mood to complete tasks better.”
“Spare me the nonsense. I want to know the basic status of Shen Liuyun and the specific signing time for that contract.”
The system flashed blue reluctantly. A moment later, an electronic screen appeared before his eyes: “Shen Liuyun, eldest son of the Shen family, pampered by all, the heir-apparent to the Shen family business. Thirty-five years old, no scandals, no criminal record. Relationship with the host is unclear; contains hidden ending paths. Good luck, host. I am exhausted; being a system really lacks human rights.”
Shen Muyun calculated in his heart. What did hidden branches and endings have to do with him? As long as he ate well and enjoyed life, that was enough.
“Fine. What about the contract?”
“According to the system, the contract is to be signed tomorrow morning at the Shen headquarters. I will send the address to your phone later. However, I must remind you: the original host did not like to interfere with company affairs. You must consider this carefully.”
Shen Muyun knew his luck had never been good, but now he was a VIP player. “So what? The contract is my family’s business. I can do whatever I want with it; do I need to ask for someone else’s opinion? Less talk. If you do not listen, I would not mind deleting you.”
“You, you, you! Respected host, you cannot be so violent! It is now 3:00 AM. Host, you should sleep. Staying up late leads to sudden death.”
“Shut up. I am only in this wretched place because I died of overwork. Disappear immediately.”
The little orb vanished instantly—a special off-the-clock skill; it did not linger for even a minute.
Seeing the little gadget disappear into thin air, Shen Muyun washed away his exhaustion and restlessness. He slept without dreams.
When he woke up, it was already bright. His phone screen flashed; it was the message the system had sent while he was asleep, containing the Shen company’s address. Looking at the time, he clicked his tongue. Meetings could be rescheduled, but he would not let this slide.
Shen Muyun looked at his reflection in the mirror and tidied himself up. He did not know when the ship had docked. The bustle of last night felt like a dream. He hailed a taxi at the pier to go to the Shen corporation.
Relying on the original host’s memory, Shen Muyun arrived at the conference room. Although the system said the meeting was in the afternoon, it had been moved to the morning. He could not care about manners; to survive, he had to be reckless once.
The bodyguards outside the conference room tried to stop him as he rushed forward. “Second Young Master, this is meeting time. Whatever business you have, discuss it later.”
Shen Muyun had no patience for such useless talk. He knocked the bodyguards’ hands away, his eyes cold. “Stop putting on airs in front of me. Move!”
The bodyguards were stunned. They had never seen Shen Muyun like this before.
Without another word, Shen Muyun pushed open the doors to the conference room. Under the eyes of everyone, he snatched the contract off the table and tore it to shreds. Watching the scraps of paper fly in the air, he smiled at the people in the room.
The project manager who was presenting on the stage stood frozen, his mouth agape as he looked at the torn contract scattered on the floor.
The first to react was Shen Wenjin, who slammed the table with a loud thud. Everyone began to whisper.
“Shen Muyun, have you lost your mind? This is a conference room, not a casino or a bar! Get out, right now!”
Shen Wenjin raised his hand, but Shen Muyun grabbed his wrist, holding it in mid-air. President Zhou’s face looked ghastly; he could not help but pull a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe the sweat from his forehead.
“Father, no matter what, I hold company shares. I have veto power over every decision the company makes. This contract. I say it cannot be signed, so it will not be signed.”
President Zhou’s face turned pale. “Second Young Master Shen, this is not a game. We are signing a contract here.”
Shen Muyun scoffed coldly. “I am well aware of that. Do you really think I need to point out every single trick in this contract?”
“How could that be? Second Young Master, you have not even read this contract. How can you say there are problems? Besides, I have been your father’s close friend for over twenty years. Perhaps the Second Young Master is still hungover and acting out.”
Shen Muyun released Shen Wenjin’s hand and picked up a backup copy of the contract, pointing at various sections. “President Zhou, here, point one: if the Shen family fails to issue a quality inspection report within fifteen days, the product is deemed qualified. I have looked into this shipment. It takes about twenty days to arrive. It is obviously impossible to issue a report within fifteen days. That means if the goods have issues, you have no liability, right?”
“Second Young Master, you have not dealt with this before. How can you say it is the Zhou family’s fault? The goods are inspected on the spot. If there were problems, then…”
Shen Muyun gave him a cold, mocking smile and threw the contract directly into his face. “President Zhou, you really refuse to give up until you see the coffin, do you not? Let us talk more, then. We are not in any rush.”
“What about this part? In the event of loss or damage due to force majeure, the Xu family reserves the right of final interpretation. That means if your product has quality issues, you just attribute it to force majeure. As for what that includes, it is written here that the final interpretation lies with the Zhou family.”
President Zhou listened in terror. These were all hidden clauses. “Well, Second Young Master Shen, this is not fair. You are nitpicking. We have worked together for so many years. If there are minor problems, is it not all covered by the full payment?”
Shen Muyun laughed out loud, fiddling with the corner of the contract before slamming it onto the table with a bang!
The papers scattered across the table.
“Are you trying to die and take the Shen corporation down with you?”
Seeing Shen Muyun’s confidence, Shen Wenjin found it hard to refute. The previous cooperation with the Zhou family had indeed been smooth; this was an oversight. But since when did this Shen Muyun start concerning himself with company affairs?
“As for this shipment, the Zhou family is registered abroad. According to the international product qualification standard of 98 percent, the current qualification rate provided by the Zhou family is… oh, that is right, not lower than 97 percent. Where is the difference in that?”
President Zhou instantly deflated, bowing his head and wiping sweat, occasionally checking Shen Wenjin’s expression. Whenever they locked eyes, he could only smile and nod. He wondered when this Second Young Master of the Shen family had suddenly appeared; he needed to keep a close watch.
Shen Wenjin re-examined the contract in his hands. The problems Shen Muyun pointed out seemed to have been overlooked before. He blamed himself for being caught in the trap after years of cooperation.
Lu Huainan sat in the corner, watching this young master of the Shen family with great interest, flipping through the contract a few times. Interesting. Truly interesting.
Hearing Shen Muyun’s words, Shen Wenjin’s expression turned dark.
Shen Liuyun also flipped through the contract. Shen Muyun had never cared about family business; he used to spend his time in bars and dance halls, rarely even coming home. It was strange that he was so attentive this time. Still, the Shen corporation was his own life’s work; if the contract had problems, they naturally had to be resolved.
Shen Wenjin had yet to express an opinion, seemingly waiting for Shen Liuyun to speak.
Shen Muyun lowered his eyes, glancing toward Shen Liuyun from time to time, as if looking for a way out.
Shen Liuyun naturally understood what Shen Muyun wanted and smiled at him.
Seeing Shen Liuyun’s expression, Shen Muyun thought clearly: if he was supposed to be universally loathed, was this big brother a smiling tiger?
With his help, the first task set by the system was considered simple.
Shen Liuyun could not watch the Shen corporation suffer. He stood up.
“Father, this contract was perhaps rushed. Some parts need more consideration. Besides, the land plot in the northern city is not in such a hurry. President Zhou, why do you not finalize the details? Modify the problematic parts, and perhaps we will still have a chance to cooperate.”
Shen Muyun clutched his chest; his heart felt like it was going to jump out. Thank goodness, thank goodness. Someone finally gave me a hand.
“Ding-dong! Congratulations, Host! The first stage of the mission has been completed successfully! Confetti!”
