- Chapter 14 - Life Skills, All Rely on Acting
“What are you all standing around for? My younger brother has fainted! Check him immediately, especially his arms and legs, to see if there are any fractures or contusions.”
Dr. Qi, who was standing at the very back, stepped forward. He placed his medical bag on the grass to the side, crouched down, took out his stethoscope, and began a serious examination of Shen Muyun’s condition.
“He was fine just a moment ago. Why did he suddenly faint? Could he have internal injuries?” Shen Liuyun’s expression was grim, and the doctor conducting the examination did not dare to be negligent in the slightest. Shen Liuyun truly had no idea what was going on in Shen Muyun’s head to participate in such pointless competitions.
Lu Huainan glanced in Shen Muyun’s direction. He had been bouncing with energy just a moment ago. How could he have suddenly fainted after such a short time? Could he be acting? A thought instantly flooded his mind. To maintain a persona, could it be that Shen Muyun has been faking it all these years?
“Young Master Shen, you need not worry. When a person is under stress and their mind suddenly relaxes, this can happen. However, it is quite damp here, so you must prevent him from catching a cold. It is best to return to the lounge to rest immediately.”
Shen Liuyun echoed the sentiment, saying, “Understood!”
Hearing the doctor’s words, Lu Huainan took a few steps forward, picked up Shen Muyun, and walked toward the racecourse lounge.
Shen Liuyun was momentarily speechless, not knowing what to say. When had the relationship between these two become so close? Watching their retreating figures, he could not think too much about it and followed them with quickened steps.
Shen Muyun suppressed the urge to struggle out of Lu Huainan’s arms. He bit his lip hard, his eyelashes fluttering uncontrollably. He did not know if Lu Huainan had noticed his anomaly. The lounge was only a few hundred meters away. He just wanted to get to the bed as quickly as possible and escape this embrace. There were many people here, and there were already enough scandals. If there were any more, they would surely be overwhelming.
Seeing Shen Muyun’s expression, the corner of Lu Huainan’s mouth curled into a smile. He walked even faster until they reached the lounge.
He leaned down and whispered, “Brother Yun, I am going out for a moment. I will be back soon.”
Sensing that Lu Huainan had left the room, Shen Muyun let out a long sigh of relief. This System, what is going on now!
“System, come out! Do you believe I would give you a beating?” Shen Muyun pinched the System’s small wings and pulled them back and forth several times.
“You didn’t tell me that Lu Huainan would carry me! Don’t I have no friends? Am I not supposed to be extremely sinister? What is going on? Give me a reasonable explanation! What exactly is going on with this Lu Huainan? The persona is OOC!”
The System struggled hard immediately, realizing it could not escape the clutches of its owner, and said with a tearful face, “Host, this is not something I can predict! This is Lu Huainan’s own choice; you cannot blame me! Besides, human beings are multi-faceted. Rest assured, this world will not collapse so easily. It is not impossible for a person’s personality to change to a certain degree. You cannot treat me so violently!”
Shen Muyun let go and threw the pillow from the bedside directly at it. “You tell me, I still have an older brother! What is my brother supposed to think about this? How is he supposed to take it?”
“Host, how should I put this? Your relationship with your older brother is what you call a superficial relationship; it is like walking on thin ice. Your brother is not as kind as he appears; one can only say that everything he does is for himself. Your appearance is a significant threat to him, so it is very difficult to increase your favorability rating with him. Do not worry about it; let him think whatever he wants to think.”
Actually, thinking about it, Shen Liuyun indeed seemed to be a person who only performed superficial courtesies. Since it is my first time living a life, why should I yield to them?
“Host is so intelligent, you will surely figure it out on your own. Regarding this horse race, the relevant personnel at the Space-Time Administration believe it can serve as a temporary task bonus, so you have incoming funds. Ding-dong! Host, your efficiency in completing tasks is quite good. Compared to previous hosts, you have already set a clear-level record.”
Shen Muyun pulled the blanket and turned sideways to retrieve the pillow that had fallen off the bed. Tasks. It seemed these tasks had no connection, yet they were mysteriously strung together. Was the ultimate goal merely to survive and extend his lifespan? What in the world was a record anyway? There were simply too many unknowns here.
“Um, System, I think I saw an acquaintance just now. Can you help me check?”
“Of course, Host! It is my honor to work for you. It seems I am not completely useless to you after all.”
This System was truly good at comforting itself and puffing itself up.
“It is that doctor from just now. Check him for me. I feel like something is off; I have a strange, inexplicable sense of familiarity. I hope it is just my imagination.”
The System searched the files rapidly. “Beep, beep, beep! The file regarding Dr. Qi has been transmitted to your mobile phone. Please check it in time. Host, is there anything else?”
Shen Muyun’s focus was entirely on the information provided by the System, and he waved at it. “Nothing else. You go and rest. They will probably be here in a moment. Didn’t you say the character persona must never go OOC? I am already walking further and further down the path of breaking the persona.”
The System tilted its head, appearing to understand but not quite. “Well, actually, Host, personalities cannot be generalized; people are multi-faceted. The arrogant and domineering feeling you displayed was correct, just be a little more sinister. You know, that type—the kind who stabs people in the back.”
Shen Muyun had always been upright in his actions. Stabbing people in the back was not a gloomy personality trait; it was living like a villain. No, this System’s guidance is problematic. “Forget it! I cannot do that. You are the root cause of the persona going OOC. I want some peace and quiet; hurry up and disappear!”
The System drew a circle in the air, seemingly unsatisfied, and vanished.
Shen Muyun opened the dialogue box with the System on his phone. It looked like an official public account, but he had no memory of ever following it. He opened the file on Dr. Qi and was somewhat shocked.
Qi Beichen, 32 years old. Studied at Jiangcheng Medical University from bachelor’s to doctoral degrees. Associate Chief Physician of Cardiac Surgery. Areas of expertise: treatment of common cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy, etc.
Why is this name so familiar? The scene of his sudden death flashed before Shen Muyun’s eyes like a rotating lantern.
“Dr. Qi! Dr. Qi! The patient is 32 years old, sudden cardiac death.” “Push a dose of epinephrine, quickly!”
Qi Beichen, the doctor who performed the emergency resuscitation on him, why would he appear here? Could it be just a coincidence? Furthermore, there were so many people in this world with similar names; it was not as if there was only one person with the surname Qi. As for the resemblance, that could only be attributed to his imagination while his consciousness was blurred.
Click.
There was a sound at the door. Shen Muyun quickly lay down and closed his eyes.
“Huainan, I can handle it here. Muyun’s health has been poor since he was a child; it might be a sequela of a car accident from when he was young.”
“I don’t have much to do lately. I have already read through the proposal for the project in the northern part of the city, and there are no problems with it. I don’t know when he will wake up. Liuyun, I heard you have a project to sign this afternoon; you shouldn’t delay it any longer. There isn’t enough time.”
Shen Liuyun glanced at the bed and gently patted Lu Huainan’s shoulder. “Regardless, thanks to you today. If it weren’t for you discovering him in time, the situation might have been even more serious than it is now.”
“Liuyun, you are being too polite. Given the relationship between the Shen and Lu families, looking out for each other is expected. Although we are competitors in business, privately, we are pretty good friends.”
Shen Liuyun sighed, understanding what Lu Huainan meant. “Yes. If you have nothing else to do, please help me watch over him here and let him rest more. He probably hasn’t fully recovered from falling into the water last time, and now he has been frightened again.”
“Liuyun, you really are a good brother, caring so much for your younger brother. If I had a brother like that, it would be great. Unfortunately, I have the fate of being the older brother, and I am burdened with a troublesome younger sister. By the way, has she been to the Shen residence in the past few days?”
“No. When all is said and done, it was Muyun’s fault. However, since there is no affection, calling off the engagement is a good thing. Furthermore, calling off the engagement was the Lu family’s decision; Miss Lu is sensible, so she should have figured it out by now.”
Shen Liuyun smiled slightly. “Alright, we will have plenty of time to chat in the future. I am heading to the Shen Corporation to check on things.”
Having said that, Shen Liuyun turned around and opened the door, glancing at the bed a few times as if he were still worried before leaving. The sound of his footsteps echoed through the empty corridor until they faded away.
Shen Muyun was not lying comfortably on the bed. The lounge here actually had a hard wooden frame that made his lower back ache. He wanted to turn over but dared not, for fear of revealing any clues.
Lu Huainan walked straight to the side of Shen Muyun’s bed, pulled out a chair, and sat down. He picked up an apple from the small table nearby and peeled it meticulously. The corner of his mouth lifted slightly. Looking at Shen Muyun’s slightly furrowed brow, he was certain that this person had already woken up.
The apple peel did not break once. Lu Huainan leaned his head down tentatively and whispered softly in Shen Muyun’s ear: “Stop pretending; I know you are already awake.”
