The Devil's Contract Lover - Chapter 2
I spoke too soon!
The HR staff meticulously collected the materials the interviewees had brought and handed each person a personal information registration form.
Yao Yuan gripped the form and looked at the men and women beside her, realizing she was competing with about twenty rivals of various ages for the same position.
The allure of a big company truly was different; judging by this scene, she’d likely come in vain—the Devil really hadn’t been wrong.
Since she was already here, she shook her head and bent down to fill out the form.
Gender, age, address… her pen tip paused at the section for “Emergency Contact” before skipping to the next line. The only sounds in the hallway were the scratch-scratch of pens and the tap-tap of shoes on the floor.
The young HR staff walked over to collect the forms, and the interview officially began. Everyone, one after another, pasted on a smile, opened the door, and walked in, brushing past those who walked out expressionless.
What should I do when it’s my turn? Hold the chair steady if I see one? Pick up trash if there’s any? Or just stare straight ahead and skillfully answer every difficult question?
Finally, it was Yao Yuan’s turn. With her heart pounding, she pushed open the door in front of her.
She took a deep breath, ready to greet the interviewers, but only saw a row of silver water dispensers. The room was spotlessly clean, with not a single chair, but it did have a sink for rinsing cups.
Could this be a special assessment method? She stared blankly at the men and women chatting in front of the water dispenser.
The two people in front of me might be the managers or something—this is terrible! Yao Yuan quickly turned around and twisted the doorknob. Click, clack, click, clack. The door was locked.
While she was awkwardly about to pound on the door, the people inside were perfectly at ease.
“Xiao Li, which department is the new hire this time from? Who pulled the strings?” The older woman’s smile only tugged at the corner of her mouth.
The man in his thirties was slightly hunched over: “Yes, yes, it’s a kid who studied abroad.”
“Just look after them; they’ll be complaining and leaving in less than three months anyway.”
“Of course, of course.”
As soon as the words fell, the entire scene instantly shattered.
The “fictitious” room immediately returned to normal.
A chair waited by her leg, and a wide desk, complete with a green leafy plant, came into view. Xingkong, dressed in a gray suit, sat in the interviewer’s seat, twirling a fountain pen.
Yao Yuan let out a long sigh: “You scared me to death, I thought I was in a ghost loop just now… I was thinking about seeing a doctor.”
The Demon Interviewer smiled faintly: “Miss, please take the interview seriously.”
“…”
“First, I’d like to know your view on this job.”
I have to admit, when the Devil got serious, he looked the part. Under the white fluorescent light, his eyes shone, showing no inhuman features.
His uniform was neat, his posture was straight, and his gaze was polite… He must be fulfilling the [Perfect Lover] contract, right?
Using the Devil’s power to tell you, ‘See, I helped you avoid an interview you were bound to fail,’ and effortlessly seizing the initiative, doing everything possible to manufacture artificial sweetness.
Tap, tap, tap. Yao Yuan, in her heels, approached Xingkong. She pretended not to notice when she tripped over the chair and firmly walked right up to the front of the interviewer.
“Aren’t you going to continue the interview?” the interviewer asked, looking puzzled.
“I don’t mind role-playing games, but…” Yao Yuan put one knee against the desk and reached out to grab the Devil’s tie: “I don’t want to rely on you to change other people’s destinies. A mere clerical job like this, I can handle it myself—”
“No one’s destiny will change. You will simply be granted an extra position.” Xingkong reached out and gently pinched the back of Yao Yuan’s neck, a gesture used to soothe a kitten.
“Ev-even if you say that…”
“The three-month probation period will be skipped, and a formal contract will be signed in one week. No one will question it.”
“…I don’t think that’s right, you’ll definitely raise the price.” Her momentum instantly weakened. Yao Yuan released the tie and wiped her hand on her skirt.
“Heh.” With a soft chuckle, the Devil moved through the desk, took off the glasses used for role-playing, and tossed them into the void: “I wouldn’t raise the price for such a trivial matter. We are—”
[Lovers]
Yao Yuan lay on a park bench with her eyes closed, reflecting on her mistake, letting the afternoon sun bathe her face.
I really shouldn’t have agreed, even if my soul is already given to the Devil… It’s cold!
Continuation >> Her eyes darted away, and she curled up, using a cat-like alert posture to shield her shoulders with both hands. She shot her eyes open. Xingkong was holding a cold drink, gently pressing the plastic bag against her face.
“Thank you.” The wildcat grabbed the cup from the Devil’s hand with lightning speed, swallowing saliva at the sight of the vanilla cream cap.
The sweetness was long-lasting; the wonderful blend of tea and milk didn’t seem like the work of artificial sweeteners. Tiny ice beads danced on her tongue, leaving a refreshing aftertaste.
“So good~ You must be very rich, right?”
“Of course. There is never a shortage of gold in the Inferno.” The Devil sipped from the straw of the remaining cup: “Trading souls for these cute little things is convenient and cheap.”
That makes sense. Yao Yuan, happily enjoying the milk tea, couldn’t argue.
She looked up at Xingkong, who was also drinking milk tea, and suddenly felt like laughing: “Do you like drinking milk tea? The legends all say you don’t have a sense of taste.”
“If you look at it from a narrow perspective, we indeed don’t have a [sense of taste]. Because the way we perceive is different.”
“Can you be more specific?” Yao Yuan was somewhat fascinated, looking at Xingkong’s profile in the sunlight.
“I don’t need to drink this thing; I only need to see or sense its existence to obtain information on its color, size, texture, flavor, and so on.” Xingkong pulled out the straw, twisted the cup with one hand, and the milk tea cup instantly vanished.
“Then why did you drink it? Do you like role-playing?”
“Because you like a lover with human characteristics.” He casually pressed down on Yao Yuan’s shoulder, and an electric scooter illegally driving on the sidewalk narrowly missed them.
It was a lie to say she wasn’t tempted, but when she looked up and saw the Devil’s seductive face, she remembered the hellfire that turned the parchment to ash.
Snap out of it! The urgent matter is to delay the fulfillment of the condition!
Yao Yuan quickly finished the milk tea, rubbed her stomach, and threw the cup into the trash can.
Her eyes scanned the area and landed on a public restroom by the roadside. Without a second thought, she blurted out: “You just said you only need to sense it… Ouch!”
Long, pale fingers gently lifted the girl’s face, his eyes full of affection: “Want to try it?”
“N-no, thank you! Please!” Tears were about to be squeezed out of the person whose face was being held.
“What a shame. If it were a request from you, my dear, I would fulfill it.” Being gazed upon with fear brought the Devil a hint of genuine pleasure.
The extremely attractive face leaned closer. Yao Yuan smack put her hands out, supporting herself on either side of Xingkong’s mouth: “Speaking of requests—Pl-please help me move first!”
Yao Yuan pushed open the dormitory door again, a feeling of separation from a former life washing over her: “I finished packing up most things a few days ago, can you help me move the things over there…” Before she finished speaking, the woven bags instantly disappeared.
“Do you know where my rented room is? Never mind, of course you do.”
She straightened up and continued searching, pulling out a stack of magazines and some small boxes containing bits and pieces from the closet. She bent over to pack them all into a rolling suitcase, then looked up, meeting Xingkong’s eyes.
“Aren’t you going to move the suitcase?”
Xingkong picked up the suitcase: “That is also part of your wish.”
Yao Yuan froze for a few seconds, then stood up and stomped her foot: “My leg’s asleep. I’ll go close the window first.” Looking down from the window, she could still see the younger students carrying snacks and water bottles.
“Do you need me to seize the last chance to set up candles and propose?”
“Pfft—You like something that cheesy?!” Yao Yuan jumped in surprise. She definitely didn’t want to see someone standing downstairs, confessing to her with a megaphone!
“You’re expecting it.” Xingkong shrugged slightly: “Too bad the expectation value didn’t exceed the embarrassment.”
“Life isn’t about experiencing everything you want… Let’s go.”
Under the sunlight, their two hands naturally intertwined. Along the way, they received envious glances, and occasionally surprised ones, but neither of them paid any mind.
Yao Yuan click opened the door to her rented room, opening it wide first to air out the smell inside.
“No need to change shoes, there’s no floor.” She turned on the light. The light was a bit dim, just enough to illuminate the whole room: a single apartment had been divided by partitions into three rental units, and she had rented the one with a room and a bathroom.
“I was lucky; I got the living room and the toilet. It’s cheaper than the ones with a kitchen or an extra room Continuation >>.”
The Devil silently grabbed Yao Yuan’s hand.
“What’s wrong? Stop messing around, we still need to clean together~” Yao Yuan smiled and pulled her hand free: “I just want to live here. I’ve already paid the deposit and everything~”
“Okay.” Xingkong tossed her the broom and picked up a rag and bucket himself to clean the more difficult areas, seemingly not planning to use magic for the chores.
The Devil is truly willing to do anything for the contract.
After a furious cleaning session, Yao Yuan collapsed onto the bed: “I’m done for~ It’s finally clean! You go wash first, I’ll wash later…” She finished, then tilted her head, but was reluctant to touch the newly changed, clean pillowcase, so she curled up tightly like a distressed shrimp ball.
Rustle, rustle. The sound of a shirt sliding off.
A piece of slightly heavy clothing landed on the quilt. She subconsciously looked up, the perfect curve of his body making the peeping girl’s face flush red.
Wh-what the heck… The Devil is truly amazing, he has a great body without needing to diet. Yao Yuan twisted her head, her mind wandering. The sound of running water quickly came from the bathroom, and the door was closed carelessly—definitely not locked.
Speaking of which, the bathroom and toilet are combined in this tiny rental room. Will the Devil really use that shower? Should I check… No, no, don’t look for excuses to peek!
Wait, it’s not peeking. There’s a necessity to see the Devil shower.
Because… because maybe I can spot a weakness? Don’t characters in games usually have runes or a glow to indicate weaknesses?
Her heart pounded violently. Yao Yuan slowly, inch by inch, moved to the bathroom door, aiming her head at the keyhole.
Damn it, you can’t see anything inside through the keyhole!
Since the keyhole failed, she could only open the door directly—Click.
Sanity returned the moment she opened the door: Who would be stupid enough to barge in while the Devil is taking a bath?!
