The Devil's Contract Lover - Chapter 10
The upturned Tarot card reflected the light, settling with a soft slap.
Upon seeing the card face, Yao Yuan’s highly strained nerves suddenly relaxed.
【The Magician】
It was neither The Devil nor one of the five cards she had chosen; it was indeed the most probable possibility.
“Very good.”
“What’s good?” She was even slightly breathless when she spoke.
“Your expression just now was very good.” The Devil maliciously hooked Yao Yuan’s chin; even his unfriendly demeanor was captivating.
“Wait a moment, I need to confirm that no sleight of hand was done with the other cards.”
Yao Yuan quickly stopped Xing Kong from collecting the cards and rapidly flipped over the Tarot cards one by one. She deliberately avoided only flipping the adjacent card, not wanting to give the Devil any opportunity to catch her out.
Her wrist paused as she pressed down on the crucial card, and then she decisively flipped it open.
It was strange, yet undeniably, The Devil.
It truly was The Devil card.
The Devil had no reason to warn her, so was the voice ringing in her mind her own ability, what her Master called the 【Diviner’s Intuition】, or some other factor?
She didn’t know, but as long as the Devil wasn’t interfering with fate, that was all that mattered.
Having circumvented a confrontation, Yao Yuan was in a good mood. She held The Devil card and waved it in front of the Devil: “What a pity~ The fate someone saw seems to have gone a bit wrong, losing to probability, haven’t they~” “That’s right, so…” Xing Kong curved his lips and picked up The Magician card, mimicking Yao Yuan’s action. The Tarot card slid and unfolded in his hand, transforming into a property listing.
The Devil began to read the description with a serious air: “This is a recently renovated second-hand house, but the owner has never lived in it. It was originally intended for sublease but must be sold due to special circumstances.”
“You…”
“Lucky, isn’t it? It’s a two-story building located in the shopping district and close to the street. It can be used for living or converted into a shop.”
“Wait a minute, wasn’t this bet canceled? It’s The Magician, not The Devil!”
The Devil shook the paper in his hand: “Yes, do you remember the terms of this bet?”
【The winner can require the loser to do one thing within their ability. If you win, I must first obtain your consent every time I use money.】
It was true that there was absolutely no mention of buying a house.
“I see, your goal in proposing the bet was to get me to choose a house.” Yao Yuan’s mind finally caught up: The five times higher probability was all a trick to get her into the game. The highest possibility wasn’t a decisive win or loss, but 8 out of 11 for 【Bet Canceled, House Chosen】!
“Yes, very obedient, you’ve learned to use your brain.”
Yao Yuan batted away the hand that was affectionately kneading her head: “Suit yourself, buy it, it has nothing to do with me.”
Xing Kong put away the listing, folding it carefully: “Our house is definitely related to you.”
“Forget it, I’m not moving anyway.” Yao Yuan walked back in a huff: “We’re eating dinner at home, no more buying take-out!”
Unfortunately, plans changed. Standing at the door, they could hear an extremely loud argument.
Male voice: “I’ll die! What are you alive for if you won’t do the dishes?!”
Female voice: “How dare you say that? Who cooked breakfast? You won’t even mop the floor when you’re home alone!”
Male: “Who earns more, you or me? Marry a wife who won’t even do housework!”
Female: “Huh? Marrying a husband means clothes and food. You haven’t bought me many clothes, and the tofu we’re eating tonight was bought by your wife!”
“Want to stay in a hotel? Tomorrow is your first day of work.” The Devil leaned against her shoulder, offering a friendly reminder.
“It’s not that bad, let’s just endure it. They’ll stop arguing when it’s time for bed.”
No sooner had Yao Yuan spoken than the voices inside suddenly escalated.
“Enough, stop! I’m going out to karaoke tonight, don’t jinx it.”
“Take me with you! If you dare to go out and fool around with some tart without me, I’ll smash you!”
“The neighbors are here, let’s go ask them whose fault they think it is!”
“Ask then, aren’t you ashamed!”
“Run!” Yao Yuan pulled Xing Kong and fled in a hurry.
The lights were dim, and the beds in the budget hotel were like Schrödinger’s Box; cleanliness and un-cleanliness were in a superposition until one lay down.
Fortunately, Xing Kong lay down first, and the box immediately collapsed into cleanliness.
Using the Devil to sanitize things was truly convenient~ Yao Yuan also flopped onto the pure white bedding with a plop.
Since she was paying from her own wallet, she had to be frugal. The room was very narrow, and naturally, adding another bed was not an option.
“Should I say good night? Or do you want more?” Xing Kong wrapped his arms around Yao Yuan under the covers. The girl in his embrace was no longer trembling.
“Xing Kong, what job am I doing tomorrow again?” She suddenly thought of a very important matter. What if she skipped the internship and didn’t know anything when she went in?
“It’s fine, someone will teach you. Tomorrow is actually the company’s new employee training.”
“Huh?!” Yao Yuan abruptly threw off the covers, staring wide-eyed at Xing Kong.
“To be precise, it’s the last day of new employee training.” The Devil smiled nonchalantly: “New employee training is Saturday, Sunday, and Monday—it’s all boring stuff.”
“You skipped the new employee training for me too?!”
“Mhm. I don’t think anyone needs that kind of training. I’ve looked at the curriculum.”
“How do you know I don’t need it…” She was so angry her head hurt; she couldn’t communicate at all: “You could have at least discussed it with me.”
“It’s not too late to discuss it now.” The Devil hooked her neck: “The theme of the training is very clear: domestication.”
“F**k…” Yao Yuan wanted to swear, but she swallowed the curse before it left her mouth; she really couldn’t swear at the Devil’s face. She didn’t want to die yet.
“How naive and adorable.” Xing Kong’s grip suddenly tightened, but fortunately, pinching the back of her neck didn’t hurt: “What kind of clerk do you think a large company needs? Do you even remember the position you applied for?”
“…” She really couldn’t quite remember; she had applied to several companies at once.
“They would make you work with a group, engaging in activities that break psychological boundaries, some of which are dangerous or even have sexual undertones.” The Devil’s tone suddenly grew cold: “The goal is simple: to make you ‘fit in’, to be ‘domesticated’, to lose your original bottom line, and to be willing to give more.”
“That’s too exaggerated, people aren’t sheep.”
“Of course not, sheep have to eat fodder first, they won’t be easily persuaded.”
“Even if such methods exist, not many companies would do something so inhumane!”
“Unfortunately, the one you encountered this time is exactly like that. And I did not interfere.” The Devil raised his hand and turned off the light: “You will thank me for helping you skip two days tomorrow. Good night.”
After talking about such a depressing topic, how could he say good night?
But it was good night nevertheless, and Yao Yuan closed her eyes. Her sleep was light, and it felt like she hadn’t slept for long before she opened them again.
Ugh… I’ll just go to the toilet and go back to sleep.
She groggily climbed out of bed and sat on the toilet.
“Krack, shh… click, shh…”
What a strange sound.
Her mind was still fuzzy; the budget hotel’s soundproofing was terrible.
She could still hear the strange dragging sound even after leaving the restroom.
Is the cleaner so dedicated, mopping the floor in the middle of the night?
Yao Yuan instinctively opened the door, wanting to see who was so dedicated, or if some equipment was broken—an indescribable scene unfolded before her eyes.
A girl in a purple dress was smiling sweetly. Her face was delicate, her doe-like eyes and shiny black hair were endearing… if one could ignore the sharp axe in her hand.
The large blood stains on her skirt were not enough to scare her, but her gaze uncontrollably drifted to the object in the girl’s other hand.
That was… a human…
A cold hand covered Yao Yuan’s eyes.
“Don’t be afraid.”
