- Chapter 45 - You Have Died
Things had escalated beyond anything Gu Jinli had anticipated. Just hours ago, they were intimate, and now?
Gu Jinli stared at the door that wouldn’t budge and the blatant barrier shimmering across the room. She was so angry she laughed. “Shen Chigui.”
She turned to the only other living person in the room. “What is the meaning of this? You’re imprisoning me?”
Is she insane? The ‘confinement trope’ is so out of style!
“Isn’t it obvious?” Shen Chigui had returned to her lazy state, sitting in a chair and pouring herself a cup of tea. “Until everything is prepared, Big Sister should stay here peacefully.”
“Oh, right.” She took a sip of tea, her smile not reaching her eyes. “Those treasures you left in the room? I’ve ‘settled’ them properly. You don’t need to worry.”
What! The little bell and the others!
“What did you do to them?!” Gu Jinli’s face fell, her voice sharp with fury. “Those are my friends!”
“Friends?” Shen Chigui set the cup down and looked at her blankly. “Big Sister has so many friends~ First Nangong, now these things.” She paused, her voice cool. “It’s easy if you want me to release them. Give me back the things you took from the underground.”
The things from the underground… the dying treasures. She wanted her to trade those lives for her friends?
“Are you doing this on purpose?!” There was no way she could choose. A choice where someone always had to die was not a choice she wanted.
“This is no good, that’s no good… Big Sister is so hard to please.” Shen Chigui shrugged with fake helplessness and stood up, smoothing her robes as if to leave. “I can see Big Sister isn’t in the mood right now, so I won’t disturb you. If you change your mind, feel free to contact me.”
Not in the mood… her motives are disgustingly easy to read.
“Wait.” Gu Jinli let out a cold laugh and marched toward her. “Don’t you dare leave.”
She reached Shen Chigui and, before the girl could react, swung her fist. A red mark blossomed on the girl’s stunning face. Perhaps because she never expected Gu Jinli to be so blunt, Shen Chigui took the hit head-on.
She stood there, stunned, looking at Gu Jinli. “That hurts, Big Sister~”
The complaint sounded strangely excited. There was no blame in her eyes—only a sense of “as I thought.”
“Shen Chigui!”
Enough was enough. Gu Jinli’s patience had reached its limit. The fire inside her could no longer be contained. She grabbed Shen Chigui by the collar and landed several more punches on that devastatingly beautiful face.
“Don’t think I’ll keep enduring you! I had no power before, but I will never let you do whatever you want again!”
Channeling her cultivation, Gu Jinli began to attack in earnest.
“Heh.” Shen Chigui sneered, though her collar was still in the other’s grip. “Then let’s try! I’ve been wanting to see the results of Big Sister’s ten years of training.”
Black Ghost Qi erupted from her body. After ten years, her mastery over the energy allowed her to solidify the mist. Gu Jinli wasn’t surprised; she knew her protagonist better than anyone. It wasn’t just her who had grown.
But Gu Jinli had confidence, and she needed an outlet for her rage. With a sharp cry, she summoned Ash Frost Snow. The silver blade shattered the window and flew into her hand, glowing with a fierce, chilling light. Gu Jinli’s aura became oppressive.
The two began to tear the room apart.
A while later, the room was a total wreck. Shen Chigui’s robes were shredded by sword-light, and she looked battered—but her eyes were glowing with an intense light.
On the other side, Gu Jinli was pinned to the floor, bound by a glowing rope. She thrashed, but the binding was unbreakable.
“Let me go! You despicable cheat! You used a sneak attack because you couldn’t win?! What even is this thing?”
Seeing Gu Jinli’s indignant rage, Shen Chigui burst out laughing.
“How are you still so naive, Big Sister? Did you really think I was someone who played by the rules?!”
From the very beginning, she had no intention of a fair fight. That brief clash was her limit; any more and she’d actually start feeling bad for her toy.
“Think it over, Big Sister!” Satisfied that the treasure couldn’t escape, Shen Chigui opened the door and walked out.
BANG!
Gu Jinli stared dead-eyed at the closed door, nearly exploding with rage. However, after that intense scuffle, the resentment in her heart had finally dissipated a little. The female lead was truly the female lead; even though Gu Jinli had worked so hard, she was still a far cry from the other’s level.
But that was to be expected. This was the powerhouse she had written into existence, the ruler of the four realms. If any “transmigrated author” could just catch up on a whim, the power scaling of this world would be a joke.
Still, even if she didn’t win the fight, she had vented some serious spite. Gu Jinli was certain that Shen Chigui wasn’t feeling as composed as she looked—those punches had landed solid.
Indeed, as Gu Jinli predicted, the moment Shen Chigui stepped out of the room, she clutched her chest. She was clearly in pain, having suppressed it until she was out of sight. Those internal injuries would take quite a while to heal.
“The little kitten finally grew claws,” Shen Chigui murmured softly to herself, her tone almost affectionate. She quickly donned her mask, smoothed out her disheveled red robes, and resumed her cool, composed persona as the Demon Lord.
From that day on, Gu Jinli was under house arrest. Shen Chigui seemed preoccupied with something and didn’t show her face. It wasn’t until three days later that a piece of news reached Gu Jinli’s ears: The Demon Lord is getting married.
The gossip came from the servant delivering her meals. Only then did she find out that Shen Chigui was actually having a wedding.
“…”
The female lead is getting married? This is too ridiculous.
Gu Jinli watched the maidservants set down her lunch, twitching with suppressed irritation. Finally, she couldn’t help but ask, “This wedding… who told you about it?”
“The Demon Lord herself, of course,” the two maids replied, giggling and exchanging looks. “Does Madame not know? The Demon Lord personally announced the auspicious date—it’s in six days.”
Six days…
“To whom?” Gu Jinli asked.
“To you, naturally,” one maid said with a look of pure envy. “You are to be the Consort of the Demon Lord—above all, second only to one!”
Me? The Demon Lord’s Consort?
As the person directly involved, this was the first she’d heard of it. Had she even agreed to this? What on earth was that girl playing at?!
“Ash Frost Snow.”
I have to get out of here right now.
The moment the maids left, Gu Jinli summoned her natal sword. “We’re leaving. We have to find the little bell.” She had a good idea where Shen Chigui would have stashed them. Since she had “stolen” so many of the lead’s treasures, Shen Chigui would need new ones to fuel her array.
“But…” Ash Frost Snow hummed anxiously. As a natal sword, it had tried to break through the barrier numerous times, but the seal was too strong.
“I have a plan,” Gu Jinli said firmly. If a living person couldn’t get out, surely a corpse could! She wasn’t going to wait any longer. She would use her “Cheat Code” of immortality to bypass the room’s boundaries.
She walked to the window and whispered to her blade, “I’m going to fall. You come with me.”
“Okay.” Ash Frost Snow understood her intent instantly. It felt a pang of heartache; it knew the process of revival wasn’t painless, even if it was guaranteed.
“Please… be gentle with yourself, Ah Li.”
“Don’t worry.” Gu Jinli gave her sword a reassuring glance and climbed onto the windowsill. She reached out and felt the invisible, shimmering boundary. This is it.
With a faint, cold smile, she grabbed Ash Frost Snow and unceremoniously plunged the blade into her own chest. The sharp edge went deep, leaving no room for survival.
[You have died.]
Following the system prompt, Gu Jinli’s body, still clutching the hilt, tumbled out of the window.
THUD.
Her unconscious body hit the ground outside. She had successfully cleared the barrier. A second later, Ash Frost Snow carefully slid out of her chest. Blood bloomed across her clothes, but the wound began to knit itself back together immediately.
[You have been resurrected.]
Gu Jinli’s consciousness flooded back. She scrambled up without a moment’s delay, grabbed the vibrating, guilt-ridden sword, and bolted.
“Don’t worry,” she whispered as she ran.
They reached the familiar entrance and headed deep underground. Just as she suspected, the little bell and the other treasures were being held there, along with several new ones she’d never seen before.
“Ah Li! It’s Ah Li!”
“Ah Li is here~”
“The Deity… is it truly the Deity?”
The sentient treasures felt her presence immediately. The Soul-Suppressing Bell was the first to call out her name.
“It’s me.” Gu Jinli surveyed the cavern, her eyes finally landing on Night Moon, floating in the center of the blood pool. “This time, I’m taking you all with me!”
She was going to break the array and free them. Since this madness started because of her, she would be the one to end it.
“You shouldn’t have come,” Night Moon sighed. It knew its master too well. The only way Gu Jinli could have reached this place again was if she had been allowed to.
Gu Jinli didn’t hesitate. She lunged toward the blood pool, her target clear: Night Moon. Normally, no outsider could touch the lead’s sword, but she was the exception. And she was going to use that.
