Chapter 8: Qi Yan Didn’t Even Have the Chance to Stay
“Mr. Shen, did you drive back here by yourself?” Pushing the wheelchair out, Qi Yan had assumed Shen Xiliu would have his own driver, but it seemed he didn’t.
Shen Xiliu’s eyelashes fluttered slightly, a faint smile on his face: “Yes, it’s the weekend, so I drove over myself.”
“Xiao Yan, since Mr. Shen drove here himself, you should help him drive back.”
Qin Yimin pushed his vintage bicycle, lowering his voice to remind him: “Pay attention; he’s an Omega, not like you thick-skinned Alphas. Don’t act like a blockhead like you did just now; take careful care of him.”
After instructing Qi Yan, he turned with a smile to wave goodbye to Shen Xiliu, then mounted his bicycle with a sweeping leg and coasted back toward the university.
This reminded Qi Yan of the last time he saw Qin Yimin riding a bicycle with his grandson; the man had accidentally kicked the child over with his leg and ended up being chased and beaten by his wife.
“Mr. Shen, have you ever ridden a bicycle?” Since Shen Xiliu had brought neither a driver nor an assistant, Qi Yan helped him into the passenger seat.
Shen Xiliu shook his head: “I’ve never ridden one. Why the sudden question?”
“Oh, I just thought of an embarrassing story about my teacher.” Qi Yan used a humorous tone to recount Qin Yimin’s mishap, successfully making Shen Xiliu laugh.
Once Qi Yan put the wheelchair in the trunk and sat in the driver’s seat, Shen Xiliu asked: “Have you ever done something like that? Kicked the person sitting behind you over while riding a bike?”
“Of course not. I’m very mindful of the person sitting on the back of the bike; I wouldn’t let them fall.” Qi Yan started the car.
Shen Xiliu lowered his eyes, his lenses reflecting light, his voice soft: “Qi Yan, have you given many people rides on your bicycle?”
Qi Yan hadn’t dated during his student years, but that didn’t mean he hadn’t liked anyone. Perhaps he’d had a secret crush?
Qi Yan didn’t overthink it, focusing on driving: “Not many, just two. When I was younger, I often took my younger cousins out to play on my bike.”
“I see.” Shen Xiliu stared at his profile. “It sounds like a very happy childhood.”
“Yes, it was indeed happy. It’s just that once they hit puberty, they became a bit of a headache.” His female cousin was fine and didn’t act out, but his male cousin spent every day thinking about climbing over the wall to go play video games. It wasn’t until one night when he returned and got beaten up by a sleepwalking Qi Yan that he never dared to go out wandering at night again and studied quietly; he successfully passed the university entrance exam this year.
“Did he become your junior at school then?” Shen Xiliu asked.
Qi Yan said: “No, my uncle wanted him to apply to the police academy. He thought that was fine, so he went.”
“That’s also quite good. Speaking of which, lately my uncle has been quite distressed about my cousin’s future. He kept talking about ‘pursuing dreams,’ and then ran away from home with his bass guitar.”
Eh, this plot sounds a bit too familiar?
Qi Yan immediately thought of what happened at the bar last night: “Mr. Shen, the cousin you’re talking about he wouldn’t happen to be the bassist for our bar’s house band, would he?”
“Yes, it’s him. My uncle asked me to bring him back last night, but I had something to do midway and left early. I had to leave the bodyguards to wait for his performance to end before bringing him home.” Shen Xiliu chuckled, saying apologetically, “I hope we didn’t disturb everyone last night?”
“It’s fine; the bar was almost closing then.” Qi Yan felt the man was truly polite, completely different from a certain noisy, chuunibyou bassist. “Actually, the topic caused quite a bit of discussion; everyone thought it was very interesting.”
If the people present knew the bassist was a member of the Shen family, the discussion would likely reach another level.
The world truly is a wonder. Yesterday he was still thinking about how to reasonably get close to the Shen family while avoiding the Yi family; today, a member of the Shen family delivered himself to the door, and he even found out the bar was hiding another Shen family chuunibyou chasing a dream.
There were many steps at the apartment building. When taking Shen Xiliu up, Qi Yan pushed the wheelchair in a half-circle to find a way up.
Although he enjoyed chatting with Shen Xiliu, Qi Yan had experiments in the afternoon and didn’t stay long, wanting to avoid appearing too eager. After dropping Shen Xiliu at his apartment, he hurried to school.
However, as his thoughts drifted, he thought of Shen Xiliu’s swollen, sprained ankle. The doctor had specifically given him a bottle of medicinal oil and told him to find someone to help rub it in, as it would heal faster that way; he wondered if Shen Xiliu could manage it himself.
Also, when he dropped him off just now, the pile of things in the living room hadn’t been organized yet. Shen Xiliu had just moved in and already encountered so many accidents. Qi Yan had asked casually, and Shen Xiliu didn’t plan on finding help to organize, intending to find time to do it himself and he added a comment telling Qi Yan to rest assured, as he wouldn’t disturb him this time.
Great. With one sentence, Shen Xiliu successfully made Qi Yan feel a trace of guilt, even making him wonder if he should go back tonight to give the man a hand?
After all, Shen Xiliu was sprained; was it really right to let him endure the foot pain and organize things alone? He was an Omega, a member of the Shen family, and a future business partner.
“I’ll go back a bit early today.” Qi Yan thought about it; it was normal for neighbors to lend a hand, and besides, he would definitely need project support later. He might even need to curry favor then. Since there was a chance to offer “fuel in snowy weather” now, why not help out?
As his teacher said, one must treat a financier willing to invest in a project with a “heart of true love,” respecting and caring for them so the “financial papa” would invest generously.
With his mind made up, and suppressing a faint, imperceptible trace of resistance deep in his heart, Qi Yan stopped dwelling on it and hurried to finish his experiments. After finishing, he went to the bar to find Brother Xu and tell him the bassist’s identity. The news shocked Brother Xu so much he sprayed his mouthwash all over the mirror, choking on several gulps.
“What? That chuunibyou punk is actually a Shen? Good grief, you can’t tell at all!” Brother Xu found it unbelievable, eyes wide as he wiped his mouth with a towel. “Is he really a Shen? Are you sure you didn’t get it wrong?”
The bassist’s style was truly unlike a member of the Shen family. He had heard from the lead singer before that the kid was so poor he was living on the streets and busking everywhere a completely different style from the rumored Shen family.
Qi Yan leaned against the wall outside the door, his figure tall and upright, hands in his pockets with a touch of casualness, a smile on his lips: “Young people are all like that. You’ve seen the world, Brother Xu; what’s so hard to believe?”
Brother Xu splashed water on his face, trying to wake up: “It’s precisely because I’ve seen so much that I find it unbelievable. Is he from the main branch or a side branch?”
“Main branch.” Qi Yan uttered the two words. He had gone to find Qin Yimin in the afternoon to clarify Shen Xiliu’s identity and learned quite a lot.
Shen Xiliu, the nephew of the current head of the Shen family and one of the heads of the Shen Group, specifically managed pharmaceutical matters. And a certain bassist who was Shen Xiliu’s cousin was either the son of the Shen family head or the son of a brother his status was equally high.
Brother Xu dried his face and walked out, saying casually: “Then he’s certainly not ordinary. But even so, I have to remind you again: your half-brother and his partner already have plans to get married.”
The Shen family is protective and values relationships; they aren’t people to offend. If they really marry, that kid will be half a Shen. No matter what happens, the other side will help their own family, not Qi Yan.
When that time comes, leave aside investigating the truth of the past even staying in the research institute will be difficult for Qi Yan. He will 100% be targeted by that insidious Yi kid. If the Shen family takes sides, Qi Yan won’t even have a chance to stay in S City.
So Brother Xu was reminding him: don’t think that just because you met two Shens and know them, they will help you. That is too naive and foolish.
“…For now, as long as I can get project support and a chance to enter the institute, that’s enough.” Qi Yan knew what Brother Xu meant; he shrugged his shoulders, harboring no such naive thoughts, wanting only to finish his research as soon as possible.
“It’s good that your head is clear; I was just afraid you’d be impulsive.” Seeing his calm expression, Brother Xu felt relieved and dropped the topic.
Knowing Qi Yan had things to do and couldn’t help tonight, he sighed, “Those pretty Omegas are all eyes-on-you, yet you’re not coming tonight. That’s a bit much.”
“You can watch the time; anyway, our hours are late. If you can come, come. If not, I’ll have Lang-lang go up and perform…”
As they walked into the main hall, a tired Xu Lang-lang walking toward them stopped yawning upon hearing this: “Hah? Why am I the one performing?”
“Because you’re the face of the place. Are you a white-collar worker on salary? You brat, where did you go fooling around last night? As soon as it hit two o’clock, you vanished!”
Brother Xu grabbed her back collar, tucked her under his arm, and unceremoniously knocked her twice on the head.
“Ow! You old man, don’t hit so hard! My head isn’t made of steel! Besides, it was closing time, why couldn’t I leave? So many passionate, beautiful Omegas invited me out to play; do I really need to give you a detailed report on how we played?”
Xu Lang-lang rolled her eyes, devoid of the handsome and flamboyant charm she showed in front of Omegas.
An Alpha must have “Alpha Virtue”; there was no way she would tell someone else about the “Battle of Red Cliffs” between her and her Omega friends last night.
“Brother Xu, Lang-lang, since there’s nothing else, I’ll be going.”
Seeing them start to bicker, Qi Yan prepared to take the opportunity to leave, but unexpectedly Xu Lang-lang grabbed the corner of his shirt.
“Hey, Qi Yan, wait a second. I have something to ask of you, don’t go yet!”
No, sorry, I have things to do. I’m leaving.”
As soon as she spoke, Qi Yan immediately pulled his shirt back and walked away even faster without looking back, leaving Xu Lang-lang dumbstruck.
“Are you kidding me? I haven’t even said anything yet.”
Brother Xu held her neck with his elbow and sneered: “Heh, even Qi Yan is like this. Do you still have no idea why?”
Anyway, everyone knew Xu Lang-lang never said anything serious. Look at that even the famously good-tempered Qi Yan refused her immediately as soon as she mentioned needing help.
Xu Lang-lang found it unbelievable, prattling on: “What’s the big deal? I just wanted him to dance ‘Goodnight, My Lady’ with me. It’s not a bad thing. So many beautiful Omegas want to see us dance. What’s an Alpha got to run away from? I didn’t force him to do ‘Alpha PR’ with me and sell his looks; I was being loyal enough. And whose side are you on? I’m doing this to get you customers.”
“Enough. Stop making my bar sound like an ‘Alpha PR’ department. You guys aren’t hosts.”
“With me here, isn’t it pretty much the same?”
“You certainly have self-awareness.”
