Chapter 3: Is Your Pure Virgin Alpha Status Still Intact?
“I’m sorry. It was clearly me who should have apologized to you, but it ended up like this instead. I’m truly sorry.” Having finally regained his breath, the neighbor, now calm, began to compose his emotions.
“It’s nothing. I was the one who knocked first and startled you; otherwise, this wouldn’t have happened.”
Qi Yan spoke politely. He withdrew his hand; his palm carried a damp moisture, and the sensation of lingering liquid made him feel uneasy.
Especially when meeting the eyes of the neighbor Omega they were calm, yet the dark, profound pupils made him feel a subtle discomfort deep down.
The Omega was undeniably beautiful. Now that he had emerged from the state of respiratory alkalosis, that hint of fragility was gradually dissipating. The flushed corners of his eyes and the three beauty marks beneath them shimmered with moisture. The faint smile at the corners of his mouth and the warm-toned clothes he wore all served to soften the sense of aloofness and coldness inherent in his face.
Qi Yan didn’t dare stay longer. Once he was sure the neighbor had returned to normal, he left the other’s apartment.
“I’m truly sorry about the last few days. I was busy with work earlier and left the move to others; I didn’t expect them to arrange the renovation at such unreasonable hours. I am very sorry, and I will be more careful from now on.”
The Omega apologized bashfully, clearly a very polite individual.
“It’s always like this when you first move. I understand.”
Qi Yan exchanged a few polite words, told him to rest early and to ask for help if he felt unwell, then returned to his own apartment and gently closed the door.
Phew, finally over.
Back inside, Qi Yan breathed a sigh of relief. Leaning against the door, he uncomfortably looked down at his palm.
The damp sensation had become half-dry. In a trance, the image of the Omega with his face covered, eyes red and breathing hard, flashed through his mind.
It was far clearer than the fading dream, and even more unsettling. Qi Yan frowned, thinking he should wash his hands thoroughly to scrub away the feeling and forget it entirely.
“Click.” Outside, as the door closed, the light leaking from the gap was completely retracted, and the corridor fell into silence.
The sensor light overhead went out quietly. The neighbor’s door hadn’t fully shut; light poured out, casting a long, thin shadow against the door frame that stretched across the floor toward Qi Yan’s door.
The elongated shadow slowly reached out a hand, as if wanting to touch the door opposite, but just as it was about to make contact, it jerked back as if from an electric shock.
The Omega bit his finger with lowered eyes and slowly closed his door. The Alpha had said he could seek help anytime, but he hadn’t left a phone number or even a name.
The other party actually didn’t want any contact with him; it was just a polite formality.
His pale, beautiful face was devoid of expression, appearing somewhat cold. The three beauty marks under his eye sketched a vibe of haughty arrogance, lacking even a trace of the gentleness he had displayed just moments ago.
He had slept well during the first half of the night but suffered from insomnia during the second half though he had managed to get some sleep.
Having long grown accustomed to it, Qi Yan’s mental state was decent. After washing up, he prepared to head to school. He had been somewhat worried about running into his neighbor the moment he opened the door, but fortunately, the opposite side was quiet, a complete change from the previous few days.
After a night’s interval, his “Phobia of Omegas” had flared up again. Qi Yan didn’t particularly want to greet an Omega first thing in the morning.
With a clear head, Qi Yan hurried to school, threw on his white lab coat, and after disinfecting, continued his experiments. He had finally managed to obtain pheromone samples from a patient with Pheromone Disorder.
Because his previous state had been so poor and samples were difficult to collect, Qi Yan hadn’t dared to use them lightly. Since his mental state was good today, he could proceed.
The storage conditions for Alpha and Omega pheromones after they leave the body are strict. Coupled with numerous components and a complex structure, the separation process takes an exceptionally long time. Qi Yan worked straight from morning until evening.
It wasn’t until 4:30 PM, when Chen Buqian arrived, that Qi Yan had just finished identifying the pheromones using GC-MS technology and was buried in writing his analysis.
“No way, man, you’ve been at it from morning till night again? Aren’t you going to eat?”
Qi Yan had just finished writing. He stood up and replied: “Times when my brain is clear are precious; of course I have to make good use of them.”
Sometimes, when insomnia is too severe, it leads to listlessness during the day and a muddled brain, making it impossible to perform precise experiments.
Chen Buqian was speechless. He patted Qi Yan’s shoulder and sighed: “You really have it rough. So, do you want to listen to my suggestion from yesterday? Are you going to find an Omega or not? Last night was incredibly lively; Lang-lang brought over a huge group of pretty little Omegas, but you didn’t go. Otherwise, it would have been wild. Tonight is Saturday, it’ll definitely be rowdy. If you go to help.”
Qi Yan was writing the date of the experiment. Looking at the “Saturday” he had just written, he thought for a moment and said: “I’ll go tonight.”
“Sigh, what a shame, you’re not going again, so many pretty little Omegas… Eh? Eh?! What did you just say?!”
Chen Buqian’s eyes widened suddenly. He dug into his ear with his pinky, thinking he was hallucinating.
Qi Yan closed his notebook, packed his things, and cleaned the lab bench: “What, are you aging prematurely? Is your hearing failing? Since you’re here, help me clean up.”
Chen Buqian took the broom and dustpan handed to him and said in a daze: “No, I’m just too shocked that you actually agreed. Could it be you were lured by the mention of pretty little Omegas? Finally figured out you need to find a partner? To get a good night’s sleep together?”
He wore an expression of lewd surprise, winking and nudging Qi Yan.
“Don’t overthink it.” Qi Yan was amused by his crude grin. “I promised Brother Xu before that I’d help him out. It’s just that my state was too poor lately so I didn’t go. My mental state is good today, so of course I have to fulfill my promise.”
“Oh, I see.” Chen Buqian felt a bit disappointed. Sweeping the trash, he said, “Even though your bartending skills are mediocre, as long as you’re standing behind that bar as a ‘poster boy,’ you’re still a total magnet for ‘bees and butterflies.’ Plus, with that other ‘wild butterfly’ flying around everywhere, Brother Xu won’t have to worry about this year’s Carnival. The shop’s revenue will definitely take the championship on Rhine Street.”
“Probably. He’s been preparing for a month; it’ll be very lively this year.” After cleaning the lab, Qi Yan took off his lab coat and put it in the locker. He was tall with long legs; even in a white lab coat, he looked dashing. He walked with a certain flair, giving off a vibe of ‘uniform temptation.’
Chen Buqian glanced at him enviously. If he had even half of Qi Yan’s looks, he wouldn’t have been ignored by the pretty Omegas last night, left to watch them throw themselves into the arms of a certain “wild butterfly.”
He rubbed his hands together and asked expectantly: “So, will you be going to help out for the next few days too?”
Although Qi Yan was handsome, he was very mindful of the distance between Alphas and Omegas. At most, he would chat with an Omega across the bar without any physical contact. If he were there, Chen Buqian could snag a central spot early, sitting among a group of Omegas to chat instead of being completely ignored.
Furthermore, Qi Yan, who had zero worldly desires for Omegas, would even intentionally steer the conversation toward him he was truly the perfect wingman.
“Hard to say. Depends on my schedule.” Just as they walked out of the lab, Qi Yan’s phone rang.
He looked down; it was a message from his mentor, Qin Yimin, saying there was a social event tomorrow. The other party happened to be one of the heads of a private research institute under the Shen Group—the very place Qi Yan wanted to join. Qin Yimin suggested Qi Yan tag along.
Being able to meet the head of the institute in advance was a golden opportunity for Qi Yan.
After all, the private research institute under the Shen Group was second to none globally in pheromone research. It could be said that almost all pheromone-related drugs on the market originated from the Shen Group.
Qi Yan immediately replied to his mentor and accepted, a flicker of joy rising in his heart.
He couldn’t help it; the Shen Group’s private institute was notoriously difficult to enter. The director was a quirky genius who never followed the beaten path and didn’t even recruit much. Now that he could get a foot in the door with one of the heads, he couldn’t miss it.
“Why the big smile? Are you going to fall in love with an Omega?” Chen Buqian asked curiously.
Qi Yan: No. It has nothing to do with Omegas. It’s about my mentor. Want to know?”
“NO!!! I refuse. I don’t want to know anything related to the mentor.” Chen Buqian crossed his arms in an ‘X,’ resolutely refusing to discuss tragic academic matters outside of study hours.
He was very dissatisfied with Qi Yan’s obsession with experiments and lack of interest in romance: “You’re about to graduate with your Master’s and you’re still not making time for love? It’s too pathetic hanging out with the mentor all day. You should find a beautiful Omega soon; maybe then you won’t have to deal with insomnia all night.”
Qi Yan laughed: “Not everyone is ‘love-brained’ like you, mentioning Omegas in every breath and only thinking about dating them all day. Be normal.”
“What’s wrong with dating? We’ve both been ‘single since birth’ for over twenty years. Wait, are you really single since birth like me?” Chen Buqian raised a doubt. “You’ve never been in a hurry. You couldn’t have betrayed the organization and dated before university, right? Have you ever had close contact with an Omega? In other words… are you still a virgin Alpha?”
“You have too many questions. Of course I’ve never dated, never had contact with an Omega, I am a bona fide vir..”
Wait. Did he still count as a virgin Alpha?
Qi Yan was pestered by Chen Buqian into doubting himself. He thought of that ambiguous, lustful dream.
After waking, although he had forgotten much, he still remembered the gist of it. In reality, he had indeed never dated, but in his dreams, he frequently did things he shouldn’t do with that unknown Omega.
Certain images were deeply etched in his memory, and they were drawn out by Chen Buqian’s words.
The sound of the neighbor’s rapid breathing almost overlapped with the Omega’s panting in the dream, causing Qi Yan to daze for a moment. He seemed to see the Omega lying on the bed, black hair messy, looking at him with flushed cheeks.
The touch from covering his neighbor’s face last night seemed to linger in his palm. Qi Yan recalled the neighbor’s moist, beautiful face, the reddened eyes, the tears rolling from the corners, and those three beauty marks that were unintentionally seductive.
It almost overlapped with the face he couldn’t see clearly in the dream.
“Why did you stop suddenly?”
Chen Buqian, who was interrogating Qi Yan, was stunned. He had only asked casually, but looking at Qi Yan now, his eyes were actually darting around as if he had a guilty conscience.
In an instant, it was as if a bolt of lightning had struck. Chen Buqian realized something, and his face took on a world-ending expression: “No way? No way?! I just said it randomly! Brother, why did you suddenly show such a hesitant expression? I didn’t actually hit the mark, did I? You’ve been lying to us all along? The real you has long since lost your pure virgin Alpha status?!”
Don’t talk nonsense.
Qi Yan felt he was cursed. Why did he suddenly overlap his neighbor’s face with the Omega in his dream?
They were clearly not close; they had only met once last night and had a brief conversation. He didn’t even know the man’s name, yet he was unconsciously fantasizing about such things.
This was a terrible, impolite behavior. Bad. Extremely bad!
With a grim face, Qi Yan strode forward.
Chen Buqian was on the verge of a breakdown. He felt more and more that with Qi Yan’s looks, it was impossible for him not to have dated; he must have been deceiving them all this time.
“Are you avoiding the question? You’re actually avoiding it! Old Qi, with your personality, if it’s a ‘yes’ it’s a ‘yes,’ if it’s a ‘no’ it’s a ‘no’! You didn’t deny it, which means you’re no longer our pure little partner!”
“Who was it?! Who took your pure body?!”
Qi Yan walked away without looking back. Chen Buqian’s expression was one of horror: “Don’t tell me I’m the only one left in our dorm room following ‘Alpha Virtue’ to protect my purity?”
“No! I don’t want to and I absolutely cannot become the last virgin Alpha in our room!”
