Chapter 10: The More I Look, the More Familiar It Becomes
The dream had become somewhat strange; even within the dream, Qi Yan was clearly aware of this problem.
The Omega was leaning against the sofa, his suit jacket neatly worn, except for his tie which hung loosely. The top two buttons of his white shirt were undone, revealing a slender neck and a pheromone isolation collar. His Adam’s apple rolled slightly as sweat rolled down his cheek. One hand covered half of his face, and his breathing was erratic and hurried.
Something wasn’t right.
Qi Yan knelt halfway on the sofa, his palms pressing into the cushions beside the other’s waist, causing them to sink slightly. Because he had to be mindful of the distance between them, it wasn’t convenient to apply much force; he simply proceeded silently and slowly.
The atmosphere was deathly silent and terrifying, devoid of even a hint of romantic ambiguity.
He had taken Alpha-specific pheromone suppressants in advance, and the other party was wearing a special pheromone suppression collar. It was different from an ordinary isolation collar, as it strictly controlled the Omega’s pheromone leakage. Additionally, pheromone clearing agents were constantly used in the living room to prevent them from losing their rationality due to being controlled by Alpha/Omega pheromones and instincts.
His mood was somewhat terrible. Even though he was venting, he felt a frantic pain in the Alpha gland at the back of his neck, and his head felt dizzy. Fortunately, the pheromone clearing agent used in the living room had a sobering effect, allowing Qi Yan to persist in completing his task.
When the task ended, he proactively tidied up the trash and picked up the instrument on the table. He glanced at it and spoke in a flat voice: “It’s back to normal.”
“Bring it here.” The Omega, who had been leaning against the sofa, slowly pushed himself up and adjusted his clothes. His voice was even colder and more arrogant than Qi Yan’s, his words filled with distrust toward him.
“Then take your time looking at it yourself. I’m leaving.”
Qi Yan indifferently tossed the instrument to him, left the living room, and walked toward his own room.
He did not notice the Omega’s cold gaze fixed on his departing back.
He wasn’t startled awake; Qi Yan woke up from the dream very calmly.
His sleep quality lately had been unexpectedly good; even when he dreamed, he wasn’t frightened awake.
Previously, after every time he woke up from a dream in a panic, he would forget most of it, only vaguely remembering a few unforgettable, blurry moments. But this time, he remembered quite a lot.
For instance, in the dream, the Omega wasn’t wearing a pheromone isolation collar, but a pheromone suppression collar. These can control and monitor the changes in pheromones within an Omega’s body, and generally, only sick Omegas wear them.
When he was leaning over the Omega, although Qi Yan didn’t want to fixate his gaze on the other person, he would still subconsciously stare. Consequently, his gaze had landed on the Omega’s collar. The style was somewhat special and likely custom-made. If he wanted to figure out these dreams, perhaps he could start from there…
Slap!
Qi Yan slapped his own forehead and slowly sat up. The blanket slid down from his body to his waist. He covered his face and sighed heavily: “What am I thinking!”
It was a dream.
So why go and research the collar of a fake Omega who doesn’t exist in reality?
Did he truly believe in his heart that the Omega in the dream was real? Did he plan to track down the manufacturer of the pheromone suppression collar, find that person from a list, and then angrily demand why they entered his dreams every night to do this and that to him, causing him years of insomnia?
Wow. That kind of whimsical behavior was somewhat psychotic.
Setting aside whether it was even possible, Qi Yan could imagine himself saying such words to a stranger Omega, only for the other person to dial the police in terror and have him hauled away as a pervert.
“It seems having too rich an imagination isn’t a good thing either.” Qi Yan laughed at himself after imagining a few impossible scenarios.
After sending the materials he organized last night to Qin Yimin, Qi Yan ate the breakfast he had made and clicked on a message sent by a friend. The wedding date is set for National Day. What do you want to do next?
The soy milk in his mouth suddenly lost its sweetness.
Truly terrible news.
Qi Yan dialed the number: “How is that other matter I asked you to investigate going?”
“Munch, munch. Not very well.”
From the other end came the sounds of car horns and the bustle of pedestrians. The person seemed to be eating breakfast as well, making faint chewing sounds before swallowing.
“Currently, the only place making breakthroughs in Pheromone Disorder is the NIH Research Institute, but NIH spots are too hard to apply for you know that. Plus, Shen Yunshu has been at NIH recently. If something unpleasant happens then, there might be even less hope.”
Having said that, seeing that Qi Yan on the other end remained silent, he continued eating, his articulation still clear.
“At the end of the day, it all comes back to the first problem. The Yi family is a ticking time bomb that will explode sooner or later. They’ve been looking for you and your mother for years. It’s just a case of ‘the dark under the lamp’; they never noticed you were going to university right under their noses.”
“But it’s different now that the Yi family has snagged a ‘big fish.’ Once that kid Yi Yang marries the young lady of the Shen family, they’ll likely have the means to find you. Then, the trouble will be huge.”
“It really is huge trouble.” Qi Yan finished his soy milk in one go and pulled out a tissue to wipe his mouth. “So, it’s best if they don’t get married, isn’t it?”
“That’ll be hard. Your ‘little brother’ is currently strictly following the ’24 Filial Boyfriend’ code of conduct he hasn’t made a single mistake. And the girl likes him to the point of obsession; even her parents can’t stop it. The wedding is set for National Day. I was just about to ask you what to do.”
He spoke in a humorous tone: “Hey, Qi Yan, speaking of which, you’re much better looking than Yi Yang. How about I create some misunderstandings, find an opening, and you take the chance to sell your charms and go seduce the Shen lady?”
After all, that lady had initially taken an interest in Yi Yang’s face.
“Don’t make that kind of joke. It’s not funny.” Qi Yan refused, his brow furrowing slightly.
“OK, OK, don’t be angry. It was just a casual remark.” The disgust in Qi Yan’s tone reminded him of some things, and he immediately apologized and skipped the topic.
“Time is running out, Qi Yan. If it really doesn’t work, don’t interfere in this matter anymore. I’ll think of a way to solve it. One way or another, we can’t let them actually get married.”
Qi Yan heard the hidden meaning in his words and spoke up: “Wait a minute, you aren’t planning to.”
the other party interrupted: “Alright, let’s leave it at that. I’m hanging up. You just focus on your research lately that’s what concerns your mother’s health. Don’t get involved in other things.”
He hung up immediately without waiting for Qi Yan’s reply.
When Qi Yan tried to call back, he had already been blacklisted by the other party.
“This is likely going to be a big problem.” Qi Yan stood up to clear the table. If that person was determined to do something, they probably wouldn’t contact him again in the short term. He had to find a way to stop it.
After washing the cups and plates, Qi Yan opened his computer to process data. A notification popped up in the bottom right corner. He opened the chat box with Qin Yimin; the other side had received the data and sent him a bunch of messages.
Several “Smiling Face” emojis were smiling right at Qi Yan.
Shen Xiliu was truly a financier who couldn’t be missed—he said he’d invest, and he did. As soon as the weekend passed, a secretary immediately contacted Qin Yimin and Qi Yan to discuss matters related to the project investment.
Such a fast and unambiguous speed made Qin Yimin gasp; it had been a long time since he’d seen such a generous investor. For a moment, he even wondered if Shen Xiliu had taken an interest in his “fair and beautiful” disciple, and he cheerfully reminded Qi Yan to get along well with Shen Xiliu.
He absolutely could not “burn the bridge after crossing it” and must treat the prompt “financial papa” with kindness.
Qi Yan: “…”
He sincerely assured his teacher that he would be even more filial to Shen Xiliu than he would be to his own father.
Qin Yimin believed that the success this time was inseparable from Qi Yan’s face, and that for future social engagements, he must bring Qi Yan along. Qi Yan, however, thought his teacher was overthinking. He assumed Shen Xiliu had probably given him the project support simply because he had helped him so many times.
Up to now, Mr. Shen is really quite a good person.
Qi Yan thought to himself.
They got along very well, but he wondered how things would change if a conflict arose with the Yi family.
As a dignified person, even if the other party was protective, they probably wouldn’t go too far, right?
After all, they had shared a rare acquaintance.
People are prone to overthinking, and Qi Yan was no exception. He packed his things and headed out.
Just as he stepped into the elevator, Shen Xiliu from across the hall happened to walk out. It looked like he was heading to work. Qi Yan instinctively held the closing elevator door, waiting for him.
Shen Xiliu walked into the elevator. His foot injury had improved significantly, and his movements were natural; no trace of a sprain could be seen. He smiled at him: “Thank you for waiting, Qi Yan. You seem to be a bit later than usual today.”
It was just eight o’clock now. Usually, Qi Yan left around seven.
Qi Yan noticed that Shen Xiliu was wearing a thin, crinkled-texture shirt today. The collar was more open than usual shirt styles, making the black collar around his neck extremely eye-catching—ascetic and cold.
Perhaps influenced by his dream, Qi Yan couldn’t help but take a few extra glances at Shen Xiliu’s collar.
…It was a bit… familiar. The more he looked, the more it resembled the one in his dream!
Qi Yan looked away with a slight sense of unease and said: “Yes, I woke up a bit late today. Does Mr. Shen usually go to work at this time?”
It really was similar, but it must be his imagination.
After all, whether it was a pheromone isolation collar or a suppression collar, they all looked very alike. What he saw in his dream was likely “plagiarized” from the collar worn by an Omega in reality nearby.
“Yes, this time is just right for work. Though you seem to wake up quite early. It’s rare to be a graduate student and not have to rush for 8 AM classes like undergraduates; why not sleep a bit more?” Shen Xiliu spoke with a faint smile, “And you seem to have work at night, too.”
Returning at 2 AM every day and leaving at 7 AM meant his rest time was too short, which wasn’t good for his health.
“Actually, it’s fine. Lately, I’ve been waking up naturally, so I’m in a good state. As for the night work, it can come to a temporary halt once the school semester starts.”
Once September began, the final days of revelry would end, and he wouldn’t have to go over to help so frequently.
“By the way, Mr. Shen.” Qi Yan remembered something and asked with a smile, “I heard from the boss that the bass. You Yi is coming back to perform tonight. Was this permitted by your uncle, or…”
Did he sneak out?
