- Chapter 26.1 - I Know I Was Wrong
After leaving the military headquarters, Ming Yu drove to the kindergarten to pick up Song Song.
Along the way, her emotions were in turmoil, her mind replaying Song Qingpei’s cold expression and distant attitude. She had a rough idea why Song Qingpei disliked her, but she had no clear plan on how to change the situation.
Only one thought grew increasingly clear: she couldn’t let Song Qingpei treat her with such indifference she couldn’t bear it.
When she arrived at the kindergarten, Song Song immediately spotted Ming Yu and ran over joyfully, throwing herself into her arms.
Ming Yu crouched down, gently embracing Song Song, a rare soft smile gracing her face.
“Mommy!” Song Song looked up, her eyes sparkling. “The teacher praised me today!”
Ming Yu gently stroked Song Song’s head and asked softly, “Really? What did the teacher praise you for?”
Song Song excitedly began recounting the fun events of her day at kindergarten, chattering away nonstop. Ming Yu listened quietly, occasionally nodding or offering a brief response. The innocent chatter eased her mind a little.
But her thoughts still lingered on Song Qingpei. As they talked, Ming Yu began subtly steering the conversation, hoping to glean some information about Song Qingpei from Song Song.
“Song Song, what does your mommy like the most?” Ming Yu asked casually.
Song Song tilted her head thoughtfully and answered earnestly, “Mommy likes me the most!”
Ming Yu was momentarily stunned, then couldn’t help but laugh wryly.
She gently pinched Song Song’s cheek and continued, “Besides you, what else does Mommy like?”
Song Song frowned, thinking very seriously for a moment before shaking her head. “Mommy only likes me.”
Ming Yu felt a bit helpless but wasn’t ready to give up.
She changed her approach and asked again, “Then what does Mommy usually like to do? For example, what does she like to eat? What kind of books does she like to read? Or what kind of gifts does she like?”
Song Song blinked, seeming a little confused by Ming Yu’s questions.
After a moment, she suddenly asked, “Mommy, do you want Mommy to like you?”
Ming Yu was taken aback by the question, a flicker of embarrassment crossing her face. Still, she replied seriously, “Yes, Mommy wants your mommy to like me a little more.”
Song Song tilted her head and said with a serious expression, “Then you have to be gentler, Mommy! When you’re angry, it’s really scary. Mommy doesn’t like that.” She added, “Song Song doesn’t like it either.”
Hearing this, Ming Yu couldn’t help but ask, “Song Song, is Mommy really that scary?”
Song Song nodded without hesitation. “Mm! When Mommy is angry, you’re like a fire-breathing dragon. It’s really scary, and Song Song gets so afraid.”
Hearing this, Ming Yu sighed helplessly, feeling a pang of guilt.
She gently stroked Song Song’s head and said softly, “Then Mommy will try to be gentler from now on, okay?”
Song Song nodded happily. “That’s a good Mommy!”
Ming Yu was amused by Song Song’s reaction, and her heart felt a little lighter. She silently resolved to try her best to act more gently, at least in front of Song Qingpei.
After returning home, Ming Yu asked Butler Su to prepare extra dishes, hoping to have dinner with Song Qingpei when she returned.
She hoped to use this opportunity to have a proper conversation with Song Qingpei and try to change her negative impression.
Ming Yu played with Song Song for a while until the arrival of military doctor Li Man interrupted their mother-daughter time.
As soon as Li Man entered, she got straight to the point, asking Ming Yu about her physical condition.
“General Ming, how are you feeling? Has your heat cycle recurred?”
Ming Yu shook her head, indicating she was fine.
She let Song Song go play by herself and then took Li Man to the examination room.
Inside the examination room, Li Man carefully performed various checks on Ming Yu, confirming that her physical condition was temporarily stable.
While recording the data, Li Man advised, “General Ming, although your heat cycle has been temporarily suppressed, you still need to rest and avoid excessive emotional fluctuations.”
Ming Yu nodded, but inwardly she felt somewhat agitated.
She knew that her emotional instability was largely due to Song Qingpei, yet she couldn’t control her longing for her.
“Doctor Li,” Ming Yu suddenly spoke, her tone hesitant, “why do you think Song Qingpei refuses to mark me?”
Li Man was taken aback. She had long noticed the change in Ming Yu’s feelings toward Song Qingpei but didn’t expect her to ask so directly.
She hesitated for a moment, carefully choosing her words, “General Ming, I can’t answer that. Perhaps Miss Song is just naturally reserved with her pheromones and isn’t targeting you specifically. You might, be misunderstanding.”
“Misunderstanding?” Ming Yu let out a bitter laugh, a hint of self-mockery in her eyes. “She won’t even touch me. How could that be a misunderstanding?”
Li Man was momentarily speechless, unsure how to comfort Ming Yu.
After a moment’s thought, she tentatively suggested, “General Ming, if you truly want Miss Song to mark you, perhaps you could try taking the initiative. Although Miss Song is reserved with her pheromones, she isn’t heartless.”
Ming Yu fell silent for a moment, a flicker of hesitation in her eyes.
Recalling the embarrassment of the previous night, her pride made her reluctant to lower her head again.
She bit her lip and said softly, “I’ll think about it.”
Seeing this, Li Man didn’t press further and simply reminded her to rest well before leaving the medical room.
The two exchanged a few more words in the hall before Li Man departed.
Ming Yu glanced at the time and realized it was already 7 p.m. Song Qingpei should have been off work by now.
Why hasn’t she returned yet?
She couldn’t help but frown. She wanted to call Song Qingpei but was afraid of annoying her. After a moment’s hesitation, she decided to wait a little longer and went upstairs to find Song Song.
Meanwhile, after leaving, Li Man immediately took out her phone and sent a message to Murong Ruixue:
[Ming Yu’s pheromones are unstable, and she wants to reconcile with Song Qingpei. On your end, find a way to delay Song Qingpei. It would be best if you leave your pheromone scent on her to make Ming Yu misunderstand and provoke conflict between them.]
On the other side.
Murong Ruixue had just received the message when Song Qingpei hadn’t yet returned to the ward.
After reading the content, she heard footsteps approaching.
She immediately deleted the message, turned off the screen, and completed the actions seamlessly, a faint smile curling at the corners of her lips.
Song Qingpei entered and looked at Murong Ruixue, noticing she was awake and gazing at her weakly.
“You’re awake,” Song Qingpei walked over, a note of concern in her tone. “How are you feeling?”
Murong Ruixue bit her lip and replied in a weak voice, I’m feeling better. Thank you for staying with me.”
“It’s nothing, you’re too kind.” Song Qingpei nodded slightly and said tactfully, “Ruixue, have you called home? They might be worried.”
Murong Ruixue felt a surge of anxiety upon hearing this.
Goodness, this was clearly a hint for her to call someone so Qingpei could leave.
So she deliberately put on a sorrowful, self-pitying expression. “I… I’m an orphan. I have no family.” Then she added with feigned strength, “I’m fine now. You have children at home, you should go back.”
Song Qingpei froze.
She never expected Murong Ruixue to be an orphan like herself. This struck a chord with her, especially since Murong Ruixue had once shown her kindness and recognition.
After a moment’s hesitation, she finally said, “I’ll stay here with you.”
A faint smile appeared on Murong Ruixue’s face as she secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
She knew her plan was halfway to success. As long as Song Qingpei stayed, she would have the chance to leave her pheromone scent on her, making Ming Yu misunderstand.
While scheming inwardly, she politely said, “How could I trouble you like this? It’s really too much.”
“It’s no trouble. You should lie down and rest.”
After saying this, Song Qingpei poured her a glass of water and handed it over, then asked, “Ruixue, are you hungry? Should I go buy you something to eat?”
Murong Ruixue shook her head. “I’m not hungry. You should sit down and rest for a while.”
Seeing how weak she looked, Song Qingpei insisted on going out to buy some food and fruit for Murong Ruixue.
When she returned to the hospital room carrying a bag, Murong Ruixue was leaning against the headboard, her face still pale.
Song Qingpei placed the food on the bedside table and asked softly, “Ruixue, what would you like to eat? I bought some plain congee and fruit.”
Murong Ruixue shook her head, her voice weak. “I don’t have much appetite. You can have it.”
Seeing that she truly lacked energy, Song Qingpei didn’t press further and simply ate a little herself.
After finishing, she picked up an apple, skillfully peeled it, cut it into small pieces, and placed them on a plate for Murong Ruixue. “Maybe have some fruit instead?”
Murong Ruixue looked at the neatly arranged apple pieces, a flicker of emotion in her eyes.
She gently picked up a piece, placed it in her mouth, chewed slowly, and said quietly, “Qingpei, you’re such a gentle and considerate Alpha. General Ming is truly fortunate.”
Hearing the words “General Ming,” Song Qingpei’s brow furrowed almost imperceptibly. She explained, “Ruixue, Ming Yu and I are no longer involved.”
Sensing her displeasure, Murong Ruixue quickly changed the subject. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have brought that up. But you really are wonderful. Whoever ends up with you in the future will be very lucky.”
Song Qingpei didn’t respond, merely lowering her head to continue peeling the apple.
Not wanting to dwell on the topic, she casually shifted the conversation to Murong Ruixue. “Ruixue, your heat cycles seem unusually frequent. I remember your last one was only half a month ago. How did it come back so soon?”
Upon hearing this, Murong Ruixue bit her lip, a trace of embarrassment flashing in her eyes.
She lowered her head, her voice trembling slightly. “My heat cycles are indeed quite frequent about once every half month. In the past, my ex-girlfriend used to humiliate me because of it, calling me promiscuous. Since then, I haven’t dared to seek out an Alpha and have been relying on suppressants to control it.”
Song Qingpei, hearing this, thought of how she herself had been looked down upon for being an inferior Alpha, and a sense of shared sorrow welled up inside her.
She set down the fruit knife in her hand, gently patted Murong Ruixue’s shoulder, and comforted her, “Ruixue, don’t be upset. Someone like that isn’t worth your heartache. Frequent heat cycles aren’t your fault, it’s just a matter of your constitution. You’ll find a partner who truly understands and cares for you.”
Murong Ruixue lifted her head, her usual decisive demeanor gone, her voice trembling with emotion. “But… I’m really scared. I don’t dare to trust Alphas anymore. They always… always let me down.”
Seeing her fragile state, Song Qingpei said softly, “Ruixue, not all Alphas are like your ex. You’re a wonderful person, and you deserve to be treated with kindness.”
At these words, a flicker of gratitude appeared in Murong Ruixue’s eyes.
She tilted her head slightly, her gaze gentle as she looked at Song Qingpei, and said in a soft voice, “Qingpei, if I could find an Alpha partner as gentle and reliable as you, that would be so wonderful.”
Song Qingpei froze for a moment, then caught the implication in Murong Ruixue’s words, a trace of awkwardness flashing across her face.
She quickly lowered her head, avoiding Murong Ruixue’s gaze, and murmured, “Ruixue, you should rest now. Don’t overthink things.”
Murong Ruixue, noticing that Song Qingpei didn’t respond further, felt a pang of disappointment but maintained her gentle smile.
She nodded lightly and whispered, “Thank you, Qingpei. You’re such a good person.”
Song Qingpei didn’t say anything more, quietly tidying up the items on the table before sitting down on a nearby chair. Murong Ruixue, observing Song Qingpei’s silence, began to plot her next move.
She let out a soft cough, breaking the silence in the room. “Qingpei, maybe you should go back and rest. I’ll be fine on my own.”
Song Qingpei shook her head. “It’s alright, I’ll stay with you. I wouldn’t feel at ease leaving you here alone.”
Murong Ruixue smiled, a hint of gratitude in her eyes. “You’re too kind. But I’m really fine now, you don’t have to stay with me the whole time.”
Just then, Song Qingpei’s phone suddenly rang.
She picked it up and saw that it was Ming Yu calling. Answering the call, she said, “Hello?”
On the other end, Ming Yu’s voice sounded weary. “Qingpei, where are you? Why aren’t you back yet?”
Song Qingpei explained, “I’m at the hospital, keeping a friend company.”
Ming Yu was silent for a moment before replying in a low tone, “Song Song has been waiting for you. When will you be back?”
Hearing Song Song’s name, Song Qingpei’s heart softened, and her tone eased slightly. “I’ll be back soon. Please stay with Song Song for now.”
Murong Ruixue, leaning against the hospital bed, kept glancing at Song Qingpei. Hearing her words, she grew anxious.
Biting her lip, she decided she had to act quickly.
